Replacing the front brake pads

We replace the pads in case of extreme allowable wear their pads, as well as when replacing the disc brake mechanism, oiling of the overlays or the presence of deep grooves, cracks and chips on them, in case of delamination of the overlays from the base. The inner pads are equipped with acoustic wear indicators that will notify you of the need for replacement by grinding under braking. If the fluid level in the reservoir of hydraulic brake and clutch drives is at the MAX mark, then before installing new pads, we pump out part of the fluid from the reservoir with a syringe or rubber bulb so that when the piston is sunk into the working cylinder of the brake mechanism, it does not flow out from under the reservoir cover. We are filming front wheel and install the car on a factory-made stand.

Before installation, we clean the parts of the brake mechanism from dirt and corrosion, especially the seats of the brake pads in the guide plates of the caliper and the guide pads. Do not use petrol or gasoline to clean brakes. diesel fuel. If the protective covers of the guide pins are torn, replace them with new ones. We assemble the brake mechanism in reverse order.

On a note

editor:

Brake pads must be changed only as a set - all four pieces on both front (or rear) wheels. Replacing only one brake pad can cause the vehicle to pull to the side during hard deceleration.

Replacing the rear brake pads

We remove the rear wheel and install the car on a factory-made stand. We show the replacement of pads on the left rear wheel.

Installing new brake pads and fix the caliper. Similarly, we replace the brake pads on the right rear wheel. After replacing pads on both rear wheels press the brake pedal several times to set the gaps between the pads and discs. We check the fluid level in the tank and, if necessary, bring it to normal.

If available on working surface scuffing disk, deep scratches and other defects that increase pad wear and reduce braking efficiency, as well as in case of increased lateral runout disc causing vibration when braking, replace the disc. In specialized workshops, such a disc can be machined and polished on both sides to the same depth, but after processing, the thickness of the disc must not be less than the minimum allowable.

If one of the discs is thinner than the specified thickness, replace both discs. When replacing brake discs be sure to replace the brake pads with a new set.

You will need a screwdriver with cross blade.

1. Brake the vehicle with the parking brake and set wheel chocks("shoes") under the rear wheels.

2. Loosen wheel nuts.

3. Raise and place the front of the vehicle on stands. Completely unscrew the mounting nuts and remove the wheels.

4. Remove stopping support assembled with the shoe guide without disconnecting the hose from brake cylinder (see "Replacing the front wheel brake caliper").

5. Hang the caliper on a rope or wire to the parts of the front suspension. Make sure that brake hose not twisted and not too tight.

6. Turn out two screws of fastening of a brake disk to a nave of a forward wheel …

7. ... and remove brake disk.

NOTE

If difficult to remove, tap the disc with a rubber or polymer mallet.

8. Install the brake disc and removed parts in reverse order.

NOTE

Since 2006, the Korean corporation Kia Rio began to actively implement in serial versions disc brakes on the rear brake circuit. This significantly increased the braking efficiency and reduced the accident rate. Numerous owner reviews are only positive.

Considering that the model is made on common platform from Hyundai / Kia, you can purchase spare parts by catalog number from both models. Full compatibility guaranteed.

ATTENTION! Found a completely simple way to reduce fuel consumption! Don't believe? An auto mechanic with 15 years of experience also did not believe until he tried it. And now he saves 35,000 rubles a year on gasoline!

Typical causes of breakdowns, premature wear of brake discs on Kia Rio 3

  • long-term use without intermediate prophylaxis;
  • violation of installation technology;
  • violation of the rules of operation;
  • third party mechanical damage, accident, impact, collision;
  • damage to the hub, which caused deformation;
  • marriage in the manufacture of the part;
  • jamming of the working cylinder;
  • depressurization of the circuit, fluid leakage from the lines.

What you need to know when choosing wheels for Kia Rio 3

The information is relevant not only to Korean manufacturer, but also to many models with rear disc brakes. So distinguish:

  • ventilated;
  • non-ventilated;
  • notched;
  • with through holes.

The first two types are considered obsolete, ineffective. Automakers are trying to minimize the use of wheels of this class. The main difference is weak heat transfer, frequent boiling, deformation at temperatures above 600℃.

Discs with notches, through holes have similar characteristics, despite the different structure. The grooves remove water and excess heat as quickly as possible, preventing overheating and boiling.

In order to eliminate the risk of buying a fake, we recommend that you purchase products at official representative offices, official dealers, specialized auto shops.

How to independently replace the front and rear brake discs on the Kia Rio 3

Replacing the front / rear brake discs is similar, the differences are only in the method of fixation, the number of slotted holes.

Before starting work, it is advisable to carry out complex diagnostics in order to identify the source of the breakdown, correctly calculate the number of spare parts, time, consumables.

We carry out diagnostics on our own, the presence of special tool, no skills required. An approximate list of works looks like this: we jack up the car, remove the wheel, measure the thickness of the disk with a caliper. If it is less than 17.8 mm, we replace it with a new one, since subsequent operation technical means not safe.

Algorithm of actions when replacing the front disk with your own hands

  • Kia Rio 3 is placed in the perimeter of the repair area;
  • We jack up or lift with a hydraulic lifting mechanism;
  • Unscrew the bolts, remove the wheel;
  • From the back side, we unscrew the two guide rods on the caliper, take it to the side;
  • We unscrew the four fixing bolts, gently tap on the end part, remove the disk;
  • We carry out troubleshooting seat, if necessary, clean from metal shavings, wipe with a rag;
  • Install new disk, collect the mechanism again.

We pump the system by repeatedly pressing the brake pedal. Add DOT - 4 to the expansion tank.

rear disc

We act by analogy: we jack up the car, dismantle the wheel, unscrew the bolts, remove the disk. We carry out preventive maintenance, clean it, install a new one. Bleeding the system is required, as in the previous case.

Buy wheels strictly according to your driving style. Notches and through holes are combined with aggressive. Vented will not be as effective at high speed modes. Non-ventilated brake discs are not considered for obvious reasons.

We hope that each driver has made a choice for himself which type is better, in relation to the features of the driving style. Don't forget to periodically technical inspection, replace worn consumables.

If there are scuffs, deep scratches and other defects on the working surface of the disc that increase pad wear and reduce braking efficiency, as well as in case of increased lateral runout of the disc, causing vibration during braking, replace the disc. In specialized workshops, such a disc can be machined and polished on both sides to the same depth, but after processing, the thickness of the disc must not be less than the minimum allowable.

If one of the discs is less than the minimum thickness, replace both discs. When replacing brake discs, be sure to replace the brake pads with a new set.

You will need a Phillips screwdriver.

1. Engage 1st gear (move the selector automatic box gears in the "P" position) and install the wheel chocks ("shoes") under the front wheels.

2. Loosen the rear wheel nuts.

3. Pick up and install back car on supports. Completely unscrew the fastening nuts and remove the wheel.

4. Remove the caliper assembly (see "Replacing the rear wheel disc brake caliper", p. 190), without disconnecting the brake hose and drive cable parking brake, and secure with wire to the body without twisting or pulling on the hose.

5. Turn out the screw of fastening of a brake disk to a nave of a back wheel...

6. ... and remove the brake disc from the hub. parking brake located in the saloon

7. Install the brake disc in the reverse order of removal.

NOTE

Before installing the disc, carefully clean the mating surfaces of the hub from rust and scale ...
