When should you change the oil on your scooter? Why You Need Fresh Scooter Gear Oil

12.06.2019

The oil change procedure is extremely simple and takes about 10-15 minutes, the change process will be useful for beginners.

Tool and material: Ring wrench for 17 or 19, capacity 1 liter, preferably wide (so as not to tip over), funnel, some gasoline, paper napkin or rags. Gloves will also come in handy so as not to get your hands dirty when unscrewing the drain plug.

First you need to warm up the engine for 5-10 minutes, and it is better to ride 1-2 km. This will make it thinner, making it easier to change, and will also lift and mix the dirt (if any). It is also necessary to clean the area around the filler and drain holes from dirt. The filler hole (1) is located on the left side, next to the generator flywheel. The drain hole (2) is usually located on the bottom of the crankcase (see photo).

We unscrew the cap (it is also the dipstick) of the filler hole. Without this, the oil will not merge. Next, slowly unscrew the nut drain hole.

Be careful - there is a spring on the nut that can fly out and there is a filter in the same place. We remember how the spring and filter are located. While the oil is draining, wash the nut, filter and spring with gasoline. As it merges, you can still shake the scooter in different sides so some more oil will come out. When tilting the scooter, it is better to use the help of a second person.

We tighten the nut with the filter and the spring.

We start filling in new oil.
Using a funnel, fill the crankcase with oil. Here carefully - you need to pour slowly, and of course leave room for air to escape. At the same time, we make sure not to overfill the crankcase. The first 700 ml can be poured safely, then be careful, because. on different scooters or mopeds, 800 to 1000 ml is required. oils. It is necessary to exclude both a shortage and an excess of oil. Excess can be removed with an empty tube of gear oil or use a syringe with a hose on the end. The photo below shows maximum level oil, always stick to this level.

Periodically check the level and top up the oil if necessary. The oil must be filled with motorcycle oil for four-stroke engines. Viscosity depends on the engine and season. For example for most scooters suitable oil.

The oil change interval is indicated in the scooter manual. If not, usually the first oil change is done after the first 500 km. The second after 1000. Then every 2500 - 4000.

Engine oil in the engine performs important role. The fluid lubricates moving parts, preventing temperature rise at the point of friction. This ensures optimal performance power unit prolonging his life for many years to come. oil starvation leads to accelerated wear engine parts and inevitable damage. A four-stroke scooter engine is no exception.

When to change the oil?

Oil change schedule four-stroke engine scooter depends on specific model. Each vehicle has individual features. Some owners can drive up to 5 thousand kilometers and not change the oil, others have to change every 2-3 thousand kilometers.

You need to change the oil in a new scooter after 300 km of run. This must be done, since the factory fills the break-in lubricant. It is not recommended to drive on such a liquid for a long time. The second replacement should be carried out after about 700 km of run. Further procedures should be carried out at each technical inspection(about once every 3000-4000 km of run).

The main factors affecting the frequency of oil changes:

  • Fuel type and quality;
  • Engine capacity;
  • Brand of the filled liquid;
  • Oil condition;
  • replacement method;
  • Engine mileage;
  • Technical condition of the scooter;
  • Method of operation;
  • The quality of consumables.

The area in which the scooter is operated is suburban or urban.

What oil to use?

Available oils for a four-stroke engine: SAE 5W-20 or 10W-40. Depends on the manufacturer. If the vehicle is frequently used in conditions elevated temperature, it is better to choose a car oil with high index viscosity.

What to look for when choosing an oil? First of all, on the indices of oils that must be present on the canister label. Chemical composition also no less important. In addition to the index, the exact amount of additives from the fluid manufacturer is used.

For a four-stroke scooter engine, you can use not only oil that is intended for scooters, but also for equipment: walk-behind tractors, lawn mowers, chainsaws and others.

The process of changing the oil in the engine 139QMB scooter 4t

Necessary tools for changing the oil in the 139QMB 4t scooter engine:

  • Ring wrench 17 or 19 mm;
  • Capacity from 1 l and more;
  • Funnel;
  • Some gasoline;
  • Rags.

Before starting the procedure, it is necessary to warm up the scooter engine. The oil will become highly fluid, so it will quickly drain from the system. Further sequencing is:

  1. Place the scooter on a level surface.
  2. Using a fine metal brush, clean the filler and drain holes. Location of the filler hole: on the left side of the driver, next to the generator flywheel. There are two drain holes. Location: one at the bottom, the other on the left side.
  3. Open the filler cap. Without air entering the system, the fluid will not merge.
  4. Loosen the drain nut. It is recommended to unscrew the bottom plug. This will help flush out the metal filter. Note: on drain plug spring is located. When unscrewing, be careful.
  5. The oil will drain within 5-10 minutes. While it drains, rinse the nut, filter and spring.
  6. Screw back the nut, filter and spring. Proceed to fill in new lubricant.
  7. Use a funnel. Fill the crankcase fresh butter. The first 700 ml of oil can be poured safely, and then more carefully. Different scooters require a different amount of fluid in the engine (from 800 ml to 1000 ml).
  8. Check the oil level from time to time. Top up if necessary. Do not bring the engine to oil starvation.

The process of changing the oil in the four-stroke scooter engine is complete!

Changing the oil in the engines of various scooters

Oil change in other scooters like Storm Lzw 500, Honda Tact, Chinese scooter, as well as the 157QMJ engine, is carried out in a similar way. An exception is the location of the drain and filler holes. As a rule, on all scooters these holes are on the left side (determined by the driver's seat).

A brief process for changing the oil in engines on other scooter models:

  • Warming up the power unit;
  • Surface cleaning around drain and fill plugs. A metal brush is used;
  • Draining the old oil into a specially prepared container;
  • Cleaning the filter, plugs and springs in gasoline;
  • Installing the components in reverse order;
  • Filling with fresh oil. Check the level so that there is no break;
  • Start the scooter engine. Let work. Shut off after five minutes and recheck the level. If necessary, add liquid.

Consequences of an untimely oil change

Consequences untimely replacement scooter engine oils are disappointing.

Possible breakdowns of the scooter:

  • The vehicle cannot move;
  • Appeared extraneous noise in the power unit;
  • The dynamics got worse.

All this indicates that the oil in the system has not changed for a long time. As a result, clogging of the channels has formed, which will also negatively affect constituent parts engine. Component wear is inevitable. So if the owner vehicle purchased a scooter in a used condition, the first thing to do is to change the lubricant in the engine.

A gearbox is a mechanism for reducing the speed of a driven shaft in order to increase torque. In other words, it transforms high revs shaft with clutch to low (but powerful) wheel speeds. The gearbox consists of several gears and bearings. All its parts while driving are in constant rotation and under a very serious load.

Therefore, the key to long-term performance of the gearbox is good care behind him. Fortunately, care is very simple: you need to change the oil in the gearbox in a timely manner. I believe that oil changes should be done once a year or every 2 thousand km.

In order to change the oil in the scooter gearbox, we need the following tools:

  • container for draining old oil
  • key for 10
  • a syringe or, at worst, a funnel
  • transmission oil

How to fill the gearbox?

There are three options.

1. There is a special transmission Motul oil scooter gear. I used it at first. The disadvantages of this oil are as follows: the tube has a volume of 150 ml, while in my scooter the gearbox requires 90 ml, that is, one tube is one and a half refills, no matter what. And it costs inexplicably expensive (about 250 rubles). The only plus: a convenient tube spout.

However, you can use any other 80W-90 or 75W-90 automotive gear oil. For the same money, you can buy a liter of "non-scooter" oil, and it will work in exactly the same way.

2.Because the scooter gearbox does not contain hypoid gears, any engine oil with a viscosity of 10W-30 can be used as a gear oil. Engine oil is even preferable if the scooter is used in the off-season at temperatures below +7 °C, because it is more fluid.

3. And, finally, the most optimal, in my opinion, option is oil for automatic boxes cars (automatic transmission), that is transmission fluid ATF. This oil has the best fluidity (which is especially important when low temperatures, although this is not so relevant on a scooter), it perfectly protects the gears, has a reduced tendency to foam. Oh yes, it also has a beautiful red color :). The price range for ATF is from 170 to 700 rubles per liter, and for a scooter you can take the cheapest.

How to drain old oil

First of all, an oil change must be done after a trip so that the sediment rises from the bottom. If your scooter is cold, you can turn on the gas for a few minutes on the spot.

If the scooter has a drain bolt, everything is very simple: put a container under it, unscrew it, drain the oil, tighten it.

If there is no drain bolt (like mine), then draining and filling is done through a single bolt. In this case, the scooter must be tilted on its side to drain the oil.

If you have not changed the oil for a long time, its appearance will be something like this:

Metallic color indicates abrasion of the working surfaces of the gears. But that's okay, it's a normal process.

How to fill in new oil

The amount of oil is indicated on the gearbox housing. For example, mine says "OIL 0.09 L", i.e. 90 ml.

It is most convenient to measure the indicated volume and fill it with a medical syringe (buy the largest one, at least 20 ml). But if you do not have a syringe, then you can simply fill in the oils to the lower thread level of the filler bolt. It's just the right amount. Of course, the scooter must be in an upright position.

When tightening the bolt, do not apply excessive force, since the motor housing is silumin, the thread is very easy to roll.

Tool and material: ring wrench for 17 (or 19), capacity 1 liter, preferably wide, so as not to tip over, funnel, some gasoline, rags.

Although there is nothing supernatural in this, for beginners we will describe the process.

First you need to warm up the engine, 5-10 minutes. This will thin the oil, making it easier to change, and will also lift and mix dirt (if any) with the oil.

It is also desirable to clean the area around the filler and drain holes from dirt. The filler is located on the left side, next to the generator flywheel. There are usually two drain holes - one at the bottom of the engine, the other on the side, on the left (see photo).

We unscrew the cap (it is also the dipstick) of the filler hole. Without this, the oil will not merge. Next, slowly unscrew the drain nut. It is better to unscrew the bottom drain to rinse the metal filter. Be careful - there is a spring on the nut that can jump off, and a filter, do not lose them. Remember where they are. You'll have to get a little dirty, it's not fatal)). While the oil is draining, wash the nut, filter and spring with gasoline. As it merges, you can still shake the moped to the sides, so we’ll strain it a little more.

We tighten the nut with the filter and the spring. We start filling in new oil.

Using a funnel, fill the crankcase with oil. It is neat here - you need to pour slowly, and of course, leave room for air to escape. At the same time, we make sure not to overfill the crankcase. The first 700 ml can be poured safely, then more carefully - on different mopeds, from 800 to 1000 ml of oil is required. It is necessary to exclude both a shortage and an excess of oil. Excess can be removed with an empty gear oil tube - these tubes are usually with a long spout, just right for our case. We check the level on the dipstick.

Ready. Check the level periodically, top up if necessary.

See manual for replacement interval. If not, usually the first oil change is done after the first 300 - 500 km. The second after 1000. Then every 2000 - 4000. (On my Baotian every 3000 km).

Everyone who takes the path of a motorist is faced with the problem of choosing and changing oil for a scooter or motorcycle. If some change it immediately after purchase, then others travel several thousand kilometers and only then change the oil. But there are those who do not change it at all, it certainly does not last long. To choose which oil is right for your scooter, you need to know the type of engine your scooter has. There are two-stroke (2t) and four-stroke (4t) scooters. Accordingly, there is oil for 2t and 4t scooters. For each of them there are three types of oil: mineral, synthetic and semi-synthetic.

What oil to pour into a scooter

Let's decide on the type of oil that suits your scooter. To do this, determine the type of engine: two-stroke or four-stroke. After that, you can start choosing.

Scooter with two-stroke engine

If the scooter engine is two-stroke, then the oil for it must be 2 tons. This type of scooter eats oil and is added to gasoline in small doses (in modern 2t scooters, oil is no longer diluted with gasoline due to a separate engine lubrication system). Therefore, the oil must be such that it mixes well with gasoline, does not settle at the bottom and the carburetor clogs from it. 2t oil works well with this.

What oil to pour into a 2t scooter depends on your riding style. If you drive slowly around the city or highway, then semi-synthetics and mineral oil. But if you have very coldy and bad weather or are you always moving in full throttle then you need synthetic oil. It does not change its properties up to -35C. Of course, under such conditions, riding a scooter is not recommended, in which case a car is more suitable.
The scooter with two-stroke engine it is recommended to fill in the oil of the following manufacturers:

  • Motul
  • Mol Dynamic
  • Castrol power
  • Castrol Act Evo
  • Repsol Moto (Sintetico 2t, Off Road 2t, Racing 2t, Competicion 2T)
  • And other quality oils.

And even if you have an old twenty-year-old scooter, do not neglect high-quality oil. Whether the scooter is new or old, everyone is required to ride.

Scooter with four-stroke engine

For scooters with normal Gearbox fit 4t oil, but if your scooter has a CVT gearbox, then you need gear oil. In the case of a 4t scooter, the choice of oil comes down to the same principle as 2t. So it all depends on the driving style. technical condition moped and also age. If we talk about four-stroke mopeds, then for them it is recommended to fill in 10w-40 oil. In principle, a moped can also ride on a conventional automotive oil, but use such oil at your own peril and risk. Oil should protect well all rubbing parts and in the engine a large number of. And it especially needs quality oil scooter clutch as it literally floats in oil.

If we are talking about what kind of oil to pour into cubature motorcycles, then two-stroke synthetics are better. Thus cylinder-piston group stay clean and well preserved. This oil is the most resistant to different temperatures. Also, synthetic scooter oil emits less soot that settles in the muffler and clogs it.

Why change the oil

I met a man who didn't change the oil for 3 seasons. His ATV was being repaired and there was little left of the oil, everything was covered in soot. And the engine worked in this, it's good that it still worked at all. But he significantly reduced his resource, and repair cost in a penny.

As mentioned, a good synthetic oil prevents carbon deposits and is temperature resistant. Nagar interferes with the operation of the engine and reduces its resource, complicates the life of compression rings and causes overheating. And given that the amount of soot is constantly increasing, plus constant overheating and repairs will not take long. A expensive motorcycles require costly repairs.
Therefore, it is not recommended to save on oil.
