3.3.1. Basic checks and adjustments on the car
Checking the oil level (ATF) in automatic transmission
Drive the vehicle until the oil (ATF) in the gearbox reaches normal operating temperature(70–80°С).
Park the vehicle on a level, level ground.
Depress the brake pedal and move the automatic transmission selector lever sequentially through all positions (holding it in each of them for a few seconds) to fill the entire automatic transmission hydraulic control system and automatic transmission torque converter with oil (ATF), and then set the selector lever to the "N" position.
Before removing the oil dipstick, clean the area around it of dirt. Remove the dipstick and check the condition of the gearbox oil (ATF).
The normal oil level in the automatic transmission (ATF) should be in the "HOT" range of the oil dipstick. If the level is lower than specified, add automatic transmission oil (ATF) to the correct level.
Automatic transmission oil (ATF): GENUINE HYUNDAI ATF SP-II M.
NOTE If the oil level (ATF) in the automatic transmission is below normal, then oil pump will trap oil along with air, causing bubbles and foaming of the oil in the hydraulic system. This will reduce operating pressure in the hydraulic control system, which in turn will lead to a delay when shifting gears (late gear shifting) and slipping friction clutches or brakes. If the oil level (ATF) in the automatic transmission is higher than normal, then due to the rotation of the gears planetary gears profuse foaming of the oil (ATF) will occur, which will lead to the same consequences as in the case of low level oil (ATF) in automatic transmission. In both cases, air bubbles cause overheating, oil oxidation (ATF) and varnish deposits that damage valves, couplings and executive mechanisms. Foaming also causes oil (ATF) to escape through the transmission breather, which is mistaken for leaks. |
Firmly insert the oil dipstick into the standard hole.
When overhaul automatic transmission or vehicle operation in severe road conditions automatic transmission oil change (ATF) and oil filter required. The procedure for changing the automatic transmission oil (ATF) is described below. It must be remembered that only special oil filters are used in automatic transmissions.
Automatic transmission oil change (ATF)
You can use the setup for quick change oil (ATF) in automatic transmission (ATF fluid charger). If there is no such setting, change the oil (ATF) in the automatic transmission, as described below.
Draining oil (ATF) from the automatic transmission hydraulic system:
– Disconnect the hose that connects the gearbox to the oil cooler located inside the engine cooling radiator;
– Start the engine and let the oil (ATF) drain through the hose.
Operation conditions:
- the engine is running Idling;
– the automatic transmission selector lever is in the “N” position.
Remove the drain plug on the bottom of the transmission case and drain the oil (ATF) from oil pan automatic transmission.
Install the drain plug with gasket in place and tighten the plug to 32 Nm.
Replace external transmission oil filter. In case of significant oil contamination (ATF), check the condition of the automatic transmission internal oil filter.
Pour new automatic transmission oil (ATF) through the automatic transmission oil filler pipe.
Connect the automatic transmission oil cooler hose and securely reinstall the oil dipstick. Before installing the automatic transmission oil dipstick, clean the area around it from dirt.
Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
Move the automatic transmission selector lever sequentially through all positions and then set it to the “N” position.
Used in automatic transmissions special oil- ATF. It is necessary for lubrication mechanical parts boxes, their cooling and washing. Timely replacement oils in the automatic transmission of the Hyundai Elantra are the key to extending the life of the automatic transmission.
When to change the oil in an Elantra automatic transmission?

The A4BF2 transmission was created by Hyundai based on the KM170 automatic transmission (Mitsubishi), while engineers Korean manufacturer took the path of simplifying the design (with the exception of the added solenoids) to improve reliability. This approach paid off and the automatic transmission proved to be very reliable. Early problems with bearings and coupling freewheel were quickly eliminated - the bearing was replaced with changes in the design.
The A4CF1 and A4CF2 transmissions are a further improvement of the A4BF2 transmission (installation of a new hydraulic panel and a different circuit automatic transmission). The automatic transmission models CF1 and CF2 have different gear ratios, and connecting dimensions, while having excellent smoothness of gear shifting.
Change of oil
The optimum temperature for checking the oil level is 40°C. Changing the oil in an automatic transmission Hyundai Elantra does not cause difficulties. Mitsubishi as a developer basic version transmissions of this type, it is recommended to use SP4 oil. Replacement labor cost transmission fluid(oils) is 1320 rubles.

Functions ATF oils in automatic transmission Hyundai Elantra:
- effective lubrication of rubbing surfaces and mechanisms;
- reduction of mechanical load on the nodes;
- heat dissipation;
- removal of microparticles resulting from corrosion or wear of parts.
- wear of automatic transmission seals;
- wear of the shaft surfaces, the occurrence of a gap between the shaft and the sealing element;
- wear of the automatic transmission sealing element and the speedometer drive shaft;
- backlash input shaft automatic transmission;
- damage to the sealing layer in the joints between parts of the automatic transmission: sump, automatic transmission housing, crankcase, clutch housing;
- loosening of the bolts that provide the connection of the above parts of the automatic transmission;
Due to lack of oil or poor quality oil in automatic transmission Hyundai Elantra:
- plungers and channels of the valve body are clogged with mechanical particles, which leads to a shortage of oil in the packages and provokes wear of the bushing, rubbing parts of the pump, etc.;
- overheat and wear out quickly steel discs gearboxes;
- rubber-coated pistons, thrust discs, clutch drum, etc. overheat and burn;
- the valve body wears out and becomes unusable.
You can check the oil level in the Hyundai Elantra automatic transmission using a dipstick. The dipstick has two pairs of marks - the upper pair of Max and Min allows you to determine the level in hot oil, the lower pair - in cold. Using the dipstick, it is easy to check the condition of the oil: you need to drop the oil onto a clean white cloth.
When choosing a Hyundai Elantra automatic transmission oil for replacement, you should be guided by a simple principle: it is best to use an oil recommended by Hyundai. Meanwhile, instead of mineral oil you can fill in semi-synthetic or synthetic, but in no case should you use oil "class below" from the prescribed one.
Synthetic oil for automatic transmission Hyundai Elantra is called "non-replaceable", it is poured for the entire life of the car. Such oil does not lose its properties under the influence high temperature and is designed for a very long period of use of the Hyundai Elantra. But we must not forget about the appearance of a mechanical suspension as a result of friction clutch wear with a very significant mileage. If the automatic transmission has been operated for some time in conditions of lack of oil, it is necessary to check the degree of its contamination and, if necessary, replace it.
Ways to change the oil in a Hyundai Elantra automatic transmission:
- Partial oil change in Hyundai Elantra box;
- Complete oil change in the Hyundai Elantra box;
A complete oil change for the Hyundai Elantra automatic transmission is carried out using an automatic transmission oil change unit, auto repair specialists. In this case, you will need more oil ATF than the Hyundai Elantra automatic transmission can accommodate. Flushing takes one and a half or double the volume of fresh ATF. The cost will be more expensive than a partial replacement, and not every car service provides such a service.
Partial ATF oil change in the Hyundai Elantra automatic transmission according to a simplified scheme:
- We unscrew the drain plug, drain the old ATF oil;
- We unscrew the automatic transmission pan, which, in addition to the bolts holding it, is treated along the contour with a sealant.
- We get access to the automatic transmission filter, it is advisable to change it at each oil change, or rinse it.
- At the bottom of the pallet there are magnets that are necessary to collect metal dust and chips.
- We clean the magnets and wash the pallet, wipe it dry.
- Install the automatic transmission filter in place.
- We install the automatic transmission pan in place, replacing the gasket of the automatic transmission pan if necessary.
- We twist the drain plug, replacing the gasket drain plug for automatic transmission.

Do I need to change the oil in the automatic transmission?
You've probably heard of the term "maintenance-free automatic transmission". Very often, this is guided by many services that do not know how / do not want to change the oil in the transmission. In fact, according to all international rules and regulations, an automatic transmission oil (ATF) and filter change is required every 50,000-60,000 km. In this case, the car owner asks himself the question - "What kind of replacement do I need? Partial or complete?".
Partial or complete oil change in automatic transmission?
Partial replacement (ATF renewal) is carried out without flushing the automatic transmission. To carry out such work, on average, 4-5 liters and half an hour of time are required. The new oil is mixed with the old, and the operation of the box becomes smoother. Many motorists believe that it is better to carry out exclusively full ATF replacement, with system flushing and displacement old fluid. We do not pursue the goal of earning as much as possible on our clients, but we warn about possible problems, and we recommend in some cases ONLY partial replacement.
For example, if the car's mileage is more than 100,000 km, and the oil in the box has never been changed, then such a replacement may adversely affect the operation of the automatic transmission, up to its complete failure. In cars with solid mileage, this is due to the fact that when the transmission fluid is completely replaced with automatic transmission flushing, various deposits are washed out throughout the system, which clog oil channels, and without normal cooling the box dies pretty quickly. In this case, to maximize the replacement of old oil, 2-3 partial replacement at intervals of 200-300 km. This will certainly not be comparable to a complete ATF replacement, but the percentage of fresh fluid will be 70-75%.
In what cases is a complete ATF replacement carried out?
All of the above problems do not apply to car owners who every 50.000-60.000 km. carried out scheduled replacement transmission oils. In this case complete replacement oil in automatic transmission allows the box to serve faithfully, and increases its resource by 150-200%.
