The engine performance depends on the VAZ 2114 radiator cooling fan when driving in hot weather, with a load and, especially, in traffic jams. Sometimes the fan thermostat does not work and the motor overheats.

It is difficult to fix such a breakdown on the spot, so it is better to install a forced fan button in advance, with which you can turn on the radiator cooling if necessary to prevent the engine from overheating.

What you need to install the VAZ 2114 fan switch button

Before you make a button on the VAZ 2114 fan, you need to prepare the following components:

  • four-pin relay;
  • button mounted in the dashboard;
  • connecting terminal blocks for relays and power buttons;
  • 5 meters of wire with a cross section of 0.75 mm2

To be able to turn on the fan manually, the VAZ 2114 fan switch button is installed in onboard network in parallel with a thermal switch, which is triggered by an increase in the temperature of the coolant. There are two options for connecting the button: directly or using an electromagnetic relay.


In the first case, through the contacts, the buttons will break too high current and quickly fail. That's why correct connection fan must be produced only through a relay. In this case, only a small current will pass through the button, which controls the electromagnet of the relay.
A pair of wires is connected to the outputs of the relay contacts (those that are open when the electromagnet is not powered): one from the output of the thermal relay, the other from the input. In this case, when voltage is applied to the relay solenoid, the radiator fan will turn on. The “ground” of the relay can be connected to the nearest bolt, and the “plus” can be connected from the fuse box. Moreover, it is better to connect it to the fuse outlet, which is de-energized when the ignition is off. For example, to fuse F10. In this case, even if you forget to turn off the fan, it will stop working after the ignition is turned off. Otherwise, there is a risk of putting the battery “to zero”, leaving the car in the parking lot with the fan on.

You should start work by disconnecting the “ground” terminal from the battery so that there is no short circuit during the wiring process.
The procedure for installing the button is as follows:

  1. Prepare a block to which the VAZ 2114 fan force button will be connected. To do this, leave 4 terminals with wires on it: two central ones for button illumination and two corner ones for controlling the power supply circuit of the electromagnetic relay.
  2. Connect to the electric fan power wires that go to the K1 relay (terminals 30 and 87), two wires with lugs. To do this, it is necessary to strip a part of the insulation on the wires suitable for the relay and fasten the wire segments to them that will go to the relay. Ideally, it is better to solder the connection, but you can get by with just a tight twist. Connection points must be carefully insulated.
  3. Connect the tips of the connected wires to the relay block to terminals 30 and 87.
  4. Connect the control wire from the button block to terminal 85 of the relay, and connect terminal 86 with a wire to the car's ground.
    Install the fan switch button in a free slot on the dashboard, having previously removed the plug.
  5. Set the relay to comfortable spot, for example, under the dashboard of the car, and secure.
  6. Connect ground to battery.
  7. Turn on the ignition and press the fan button. The relay should click and the fan motor should turn on.

This completes the installation of the forced fan button on the VAZ 2114.

Unlike Mokvichi, VAZs do not have inherent problems associated with constant boiling in the summer, and Samara even more so. But there is a moment. Even a few. Firstly, now we cannot imagine our life without traffic jams and toffees. Secondly, spare parts for VAZs are cheap, but the quality, alas, corresponds to the price ... In other words, you can boil in a traffic jam because of one small penny detail - a temperature sensor, which turns on the fan when a certain temperature is reached. And even if it does not fail, but simply will not work properly for a long time and the motor will often overheat - you can fly in for a pretty decent engine repair.

It's summer now and so this topic is quite relevant.

But there is a fairly simple option how to protect yourself from overheating the engine in a traffic jam in the hot summer and from cuckooing in the middle of the traffic jam until the engine cools down (if the sensor still closes and the engine starts to boil). It is enough just to make a button for forcibly turning on the cooling fan of the radiator.

All that is needed for this refinement is a wire and a button or toggle switch (anything, any switch that can close the circuit).

The temperature sensor is designed to close the circuit when a certain temperature is reached and thereby turn on the fan on the radiator. All we need is just to send 2 wires from the sensor into the cabin, in parallel, so to speak, and connect them to the switch. If the sensor does not turn on the fan - you can do it!

It is not difficult to force the VAZ 2109 fan to turn on, you just need to think a little and understand the principle of operation of the entire system. The need for radiator cooling arises in those moments when you move through traffic jams (and it doesn’t matter at all whether this happens in winter or summer). In hot weather, of course, overheating occurs more.

But with a long movement in the starting mode and an instant stop, the antifreeze in the cooling system simply boils. Today we will consider the reasons why the VAZ 2109 fan does not turn on in automatic mode, replacement of the temperature sensor, and also draw up a small scheme for forced airflow start. The latter turns out to be useful, since the quality of thermal switches leaves much to be desired.

Why doesn't the electric fan work?

There are not so many reasons:

  1. The motor winding burned out.
  2. The thermal switch has failed.
  3. Destruction of electrical wiring.

So, what to do if the fan suddenly stops turning on? First of all, open the valve of the stove, this will increase the circle of circulation of the coolant. Do not forget to turn on the blower of the stove radiator so that it cools faster.

When the temperature starts to drop a little, turn off the engine. Open the hood and before you is not a very pleasant picture - the antifreeze is gone, half of the compartment is wet. It is necessary to add liquid to expansion tank. If it happens in the summer, then you can fill in the water (the main thing is to change it to antifreeze before winter).

Check the operation of the electric motor - disconnect the connection block and directly supply power from the battery to it. Is the propeller spinning? So, everything is fine with the winding, install the block in place. Only the sensor-switch is responsible for turning on the VAZ 2109 fan on later versions.

To check it, you need to remove two wires from it and connect them. If the rotor began to rotate, then the malfunction lies precisely in the sensor. The way out of this situation is to continue moving by connecting these two wires. It is not necessary to isolate them, since the switching on of the VAZ 2109 fan is controlled by mass (if a bare wire catches on a part of the body, then it's okay).

And the third reason is a broken wire. There are two wires going to the VAZ 2109 fan sensor: directly from the fan and ground (body). If there were no problems before, then try to make a reliable mass, since by default in nines negative wire from the fan sensor goes towards the fuse box and is lost there.

Find a place near the radiator where you can connect the negative power cable. That's all the malfunctions that may lie in wait for you. Now it's worth talking about the useful button for forced airflow.

How to install the VAZ 2109 fan switch button correctly

There are two options - through a relay or using only one switch. The relay connection diagram is simple - you need to connect two wires in parallel with the sensor. Both of them should go to the normally open outputs of the electromagnetic relay. This circuit avoids the presence of high current in the circuit breaker.

Two thin wires must be brought under dashboard and connect to the contacts of the button (or switch). Thus, a control element for a low-current winding of an electromagnetic relay is installed in the passenger compartment, and all high-current circuits are located under the hood.

And now, if the VAZ 2109 fan sensor fails, you just need to press the button to cool the engine. For this purpose, a standard relay with normally open contacts is used. Similar are installed on the light, drives of electric motors. Its price in the store is about 50-70 rubles.

The cost of the fan switch on sensor is about 100 rubles. As a result, after spending a couple of hundred and half an hour of time, you will make reliable system, which will not let you down in a difficult moment.

I will say on my own: after it boiled in traffic jams a couple of times, due to the fan not turning on, I had to install a conventional switch and relay. Unfortunately, there was nothing but a stove fan switch from the six, so I put it on. And now, as soon as I approach the traffic jam, I just turn on the fan. And turn it off when I stop. It does not affect maneuverability and speed. Even taking into account that the carburetor nine (idle holds 900-930), there are no jerks or attempts to stall.

But you can, of course, use a different scheme - for example, turn on the VAZ 2109 fan directly with a switch, without using a relay. But this is fraught with the fact that the contacts of the switch will constantly burn out, its service life becomes much shorter.

And you can use buttons without latches, for this you need to include one semiconductor diode in the control circuit for turning on the VAZ 2109 fan. That's just turning off such a system is possible if the power circuit is broken with the second button.

But these are trifles for a person who is more or less versed in electrics. Like these ones useful little things it is worth adding to your car so that the failure of the VAZ 2109 fan sensor does not take you by surprise.
