The long-awaited crossover Renault class C +, for the release of which the French began to prepare us, has finally been declassified. True, it is still in the status of a show car, so there are no detailed characteristics or images of the interior yet. And yet, a car named Arkana has become one of the main decorations of the meager Moscow Motor Show: as promised by the company's chief designer Laurens van den Acker, this is a “real Renault”, drawn in the new corporate style of the brand. The name is derived from the Latin word arcanium, which means "secret" in translation and is read with an emphasis on the second "a".
But the main surprise was the body type. There has never been a coupe-shaped crossover in the mass mid-price segment of the Russian market! The Arkana has a five-door liftback body style with a large lifting fifth door and a sedan trunk tail. Moreover, Renault is especially proud of the fact that the idea of creating this car was born in Russia. The crossover with a length of approximately 4.5 m (almost 200 mm longer than the Duster) did not become a variation of any of the existing models and was created virtually from scratch. Renault carefully avoids mentioning the Global Access platform (that is, B0), because it has gone through a really large-scale modernization and, in a good way, should already have a separate name. Due to the seriously increased wheelbase compared to Captur and Duster, the power structure of the body floor has been noticeably altered. A completely new steering mechanism has also been announced - apparently, with steering wheel adjustment for reach, as has already been done on inaccessible to us. The show crossover is equipped with 19-inch wheels, and disc brakes are installed on the rear axle, and the rear discs are almost the same size as the front ones. Until now, the only model on the B0 platform with disc mechanisms at the rear was the Brazilian "charged" hatchback. However, according to Autoreview, the production car will be with 17-inch wheels, and disc rear brakes have not yet been approved - and it is likely that Arcana with drum mechanisms will float along the conveyor. The company promises that a new variation of the platform will be used on future Renault crossovers for Russia.
A surprise is expected under the hood. You can forget about the current 1.6 and 2.0 engines. The French bluntly stated that the Arcana will have "a completely new powertrain, which is the advanced development of the Alliance and its partners, combining power and dynamism with high fuel efficiency." The only engine partner of the Renaut-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance today is the Daimler concern, in cooperation with which a 1.3 petrol turbo engine has recently been created, which has already appeared on some Renault and Mercedes A-class models. It is possible that we are talking about this engine. But it is known for sure that Arkana will be offered both with front (in this case, semi-independent suspension from the new Duster at the rear), and with all-wheel drive and multi-link. In the role of automatic transmission will be a variator.
The coupe-shaped crossover will be produced at the Moscow Renault plant: the modernization of the assembly line with an increase in the degree of automation will continue for several more months.
