Better x trail or equal 4. Nissan X Trail or Toyota RAV4: which is better? Start of sales in Russia

The Toyota RAV4 crossover has recently received an updated appearance and a modified chassis. Will these changes help it win in a comparison test with the new generation Nissan X-Trail? The fight promises to be interesting.

The appearance of the Toyota RAV4 has changed quite significantly, especially when you look at the car from the front. Actually, the front end of the crossover is completely new: the bumper, headlights, fog lights and the radiator grille have nothing to do with the pre-styling model. On the sidewalls of the body, you can see modified door sills and new fringing of the wheel arches. "Korma" has found redesigned lights, bumper and rear door trim.

Technical changes are dictated by the wishes of customers. So, many complained about the stiff suspension. In this regard, the restyled model received softer springs and shock absorbers. And so that handling does not suffer, the designers increased the rigidity of the body. In addition, sound insulation has been significantly improved with the help of absorbent floor coverings, the area of \u200b\u200bwhich has increased by 55% compared to the pre-styling model.

On the Russian market, modifications are offered with two gasoline engines of 2.0 and 2.5 liters, developing 146 and 180 hp, respectively. There is also a version with a 2.2-liter turbodiesel with 150 hp. The price range for basic configurations is from 1,174,000 to 2,008,000 rubles.

Nissan X-Trail has changed dramatically compared to the previous generation model. If the predecessor looked like a natural SUV, then the novelty looks like a "SUV", which, in fact, it is. In general, the design of the car is cute and sporty, only many people confuse it with the junior Nissan Qashqai - they are very similar. On the technical side, the crossover received a more rigid chassis for better handling.

In our country, the Nissan X-Trail is sold with three power units. These are two gasoline engines (2.0 and 2.5 liters) with a capacity of 144 and 171 hp, as well as a 1.6-liter turbodiesel developing 130 hp. Prices for basic versions start at 1,299,000 rubles and end at 1,826,000 rubles.

As is often the case, there were no identical modifications in the press parks for a comparative test. Our Nissan X-Trail is equipped with a 2.5-liter 171-horsepower engine, while the RAV4 is equipped with a 2-liter unit with 146 hp. But both with variators. And according to the declared dynamic characteristics, they differ not significantly.

Square and circle

Toyota's interior is strict. The design is “chopped”, consisting of straight lines and angles, except for appliances from roundness. By the way, the restyled model has a completely new dashboard, it looks more expensive than before, and is better readable. A 4.2-inch multifunctional display with great graphics appeared between the instrument dials. The finish of the door panels, steering wheel and inserts on the front panel has changed. In general, the materials have become more expensive, although the top of the front panel is still made of hard plastic. But the window sills on the doors are soft to the touch.

Salon Nissan - the exact opposite of Toyota. Smooth lines, rounded surfaces. And there is more soft plastic: the doors, as well as the top and the central part of the front panel, are trimmed with pliable material. In a word, our rivals are identical in terms of the quality of finishing materials and fitting of interior panels.

For the convenience of the seats and the geometry of the landing behind the wheel, we also put an equal sign. The ranges of seat and steering wheel adjustments make it easy for people of different sizes to get comfortable in both cars. The seats distribute loads well and have mild lateral support. However, these are not sports cars, so they do not need powerful lateral support. As for the right front seats, our competitors do not have height adjustment, which is typical for Japanese models.

Also typical for the "Japanese" and some ergonomic misses. For example, both crossovers sin with an inconvenient location of the seat heating keys. At Toyota, they are located under the “influx” of the center console, forcing you to look under it, while at Nissan, the buttons are located near the center armrest, which makes you distract from the road. For both, the steering wheels are adjusted in height on a short arm, which is why in the upper position they are arranged in a bus-like sloping way. Not all keys are illuminated at night, and if you do not remember the location, it is not easy to find them in the dark. And when we had to drive on loose snow, we at Toyota spent a lot of time looking for a button to disable the stabilization system. However, permanent owners remember the location of the necessary keys, of course, sooner or later.

But both Toyota and Nissan are well equipped. So, both have rear-view cameras and heated windshields. Moreover, in RAV4, the steering wheel is also heated - however, only in places of the correct grip. And also, when you get into Toyota, the trousers remain clean even in the dirtiest weather, because the doors of the crossover completely cover the sills. But it is almost impossible to get inside the X Trail without getting dirty.

On the second row, both rivals offer unexpectedly plenty of space across the board. So, if a person with a height of 180 cm adjusts the front seat in Toyota for himself and sits back, then at least 15 cm will remain in front of his knees, and in Nissan even a couple of centimeters more. But there is more headroom already in the RAV4, since its sofa is located much lower than in the X-Trail, which offers rear riders a downright commanding position. But we liked the Toyota seat more, as its cushions are softer and longer. Both, by the way, the backs can be adjusted in terms of the angle of inclination. The Nissan sofa, unlike its rival, moves back and forth, although this function no longer affects passenger comfort, but luggage space.

However, the luggage compartment of the X-Trail will somehow be able to compete in volume with the Toyota one only if you move the rear seats all the way forward. In the usual configuration, the Nissan trunk is noticeably smaller, and it has more loading height. Under the floor of the Nissan model is a full-fledged spare tire, and Toyota offers a "roll-out". Actually, a full-fledged spare wheel ate part of the volume from the X Trail. The trunk in Nissan can be divided into parts by removing part of the floor and installing an impromptu shelf on the side ledges. But these protrusions reduce the already small volume. When the second row seats are folded out, both get a flat area.

They are so different

The Nissan engine runs smoothly and imperceptibly, and the continuously variable variator provides the car with a “trolleybus” acceleration. Moreover, acceleration is quite frisky even on slippery surfaces. But it should be noted that with a sharp press on the accelerator pedal, the front wheels have time to slip before the moment is transferred to the rear axle, although the delay is small. The engine responds to fuel supply smoothly and very lively, and even at high speeds its sound is not loud.

Toyota does not skid under heavy acceleration. And not so much because of the lower power of the power unit, but due to the best settings of the all-wheel drive system. The accelerator pedal is more damped here, especially at low speeds. However, the nature of the car can be changed by turning on the "sports" mode - then the reaction to the "gas" will become even sharper than that of Nissan. The car changes so much that it seems that it will not lag behind the rival, despite the loss in power by more than 20 hp. The CVT works no worse than in the X-Trail, and the engine at high speeds in the RAV4 has a more groovy tone (Nissan, by the way, does not have a “sports” mode).

Brakes in normal modes do not cause any complaints from any of the rivals. But when decelerating in loose snow, we liked the Toyota ABS settings more - the RAV4 stops faster in these conditions, and the deceleration is dosed better.

Toyota's steering is sharper than that of its rival (about 2.7 turns from lock to lock against exactly three), and when driving, its steering wheel responds to control actions a little faster. Despite this, the RAV4 is perceived as a more relaxed car. In principle, both competitors respond to control actions in a timely and adequate manner, without delays inherent in machines with a high center of gravity. But when driving fast on a winding track, these crossovers are as different as heaven and earth.

So, X-Trail literally turns the driver on, provoking him to attack corners at the limit of tire grip. The car behaves like a sports car, without delay rushing into turns. And on the arc is excellent, in the limit showing a slight understeer.

In a Toyota, the driver feels like he's taken a good dose of a sedative. At the same time, the RAV4 in corners moves more stable and more reliably than its opponent, but does not cause a desire to be smart. Actually, both of our competitors are distinguished by a good balance of the chassis and in the limiting modes they are controlled very similarly, only the sensations are different. It is difficult to choose the best of them in terms of handling, since it all depends on personal preferences. On the motorway, both "Japanese" confidently keep a straight line, despite the bumps and ruts.

The Toyota suspension, modified during restyling, really became softer than that of the pre-reform version, but the car still passes bumps tightly and collected, and on a wavy road it repeats its profile in some detail. In a word, the RAV4 did not turn into a “sofa”. Although the X-Trail is not like a feather bed: its chassis is set rigidly, and bumps on bumps feel about as tight and elastic as the competitor. And in terms of noise isolation, crossovers are equal. The main source of noise for both is winter tires. Moreover, it is muffled quite well for both Nissan and Toyota, and if the RAV4 is compared with the pre-styling modification, then the difference is very noticeable just in terms of isolation from road noise.

In the mud or snow on both crossovers you need to move out carefully. The geometric cross-country ability of both Toyota with a clearance of 197 mm and Nissan with 210 mm ground clearance is quite decent, and the entry-exit angles are not bad, but it should be borne in mind that there are CVTs here. We didn’t torment the cars much, so it didn’t come to overheating, but both had problems with dosing traction at low speed. And this is fraught with rapid digging when driving on loose and loose surfaces - traditional "automatic machines" behave much better in such conditions. However, the RAV4 with a more powerful 2.5-liter engine is equipped with just an “automatic”, however, it has a ground clearance of only 165 mm. But the diesel version of Toyota has an “automatic” and a 197 mm ground clearance. So there is a choice. X-Trail does not have automatic versions. On a hard primer, both behave well, since the energy intensity of their suspensions is excellent.

So, our rivals are very close. So, the choice between the calm nature of Toyota and the active drive of Nissan is a matter of personal preference. But if you approach the matter from a practical side, then RAV4 offers buyers more options.

They have improved many parameters, appearance, interior trim and those. characteristics.

The exterior of Toyota Rav 4 has changed a lot, this can be seen from the front. In general, the front part of the novelty has been updated: a new bumper, optics, fog lights and a radiator grill have been updated very much compared to the previous generation. Other sill plates are visible on the side, as well as a new frame for the wheel arches. At the rear, you can see the converted headlights, bumper, and fifth door trim.

As for the Nissan X-Trail, this car has changed a lot. The previous generation looked like an ordinary SUV, but now the model looks like an SUV. In general, the exterior of the car is sporty and elegant. The car is very similar to the Nissan Qashqai. On the technical side, the car has a more improved rigid chassis in order to better control the car.

Interior of Toyota Rav 4 and Nissan X-Trail

The interior of Toyota Rav 4 looks strict. We can say that the interior is “chopped”, straight outlines and corners are noticeable, only devices can be considered round. The updated car has a completely new instrument panel, it is made of expensive materials, and has also become more informative. Between the dials of the devices is 4.2 inches. multifunctional screen with stunning graphics. They also changed the finishing materials of the door panels, the steering wheel, the inserts on the front panel have changed. In general, finishing materials are now expensive, but the top of the panel is also made of hard plastic.

The interior of the Nissan X-Trail is completely different. Smooth outlines, round surfaces. There are also more soft plastic parts - the doors and the top of the middle of the front panel are covered with a pliable product.

Everyone inside is located with complete comfort, both in one and the other car - here the cars are identical with the convenience. Armchairs perfectly distribute the load and with good lateral support. The inconvenient placement of the seat heating buttons can be considered a drawback in both cars.

Trunk Toyota Rav 4 and Nissan X-Trail

The trunk of Toyota Rav 4 is designed for 1705 liters. The trunk of the Nissan X-Trail is designed for 1585 liters.

Outcome

Both cars are excellently equipped and have amazing technical characteristics.

The compact Japanese crossovers Toyota RAV 4 and Nissan X-Trail are bright competitors in the global car market, not inferior to each other in terms of external design, technical equipment, or operational characteristics. generation T32 - the differences have become even less pronounced. Considering that the cost of both SUVs is approximately in the same price range, the interest of motorists in a comparative analysis of their features is natural.

The production of Toyota RAV 4 crossovers began long before the development of the Nissan X-Trail - back in 1994. The first generation X-Trail T30 was presented to the public only in 2001.

Since their introduction to the world market, both cars have undergone significant changes. To date, Toyota is preparing for mass production the fifth generation of the RAV 4 (sales start in 2019). Its closest competitor, Nissan, in turn, introduced an improved X-Trail T32 model in 2017, which, after restyling, became even more respectable.

After 2016, motorists have the opportunity to evaluate the potential of the updated versions of the Toyota Rav 4 and Nissan X-Trail. Analysis of the characteristics of these cars allows you to get the most objective assessment in the nissan x trail vs toyota rav4 comparison.

Exterior

The appearance of improved versions of the Rav 4 and X-Trail after 2016 demonstrated the results of the serious work of the designers of both concerns. Specific angularity and "brutality", characteristic of the second generation X-Trail, has lost its severity. Instead, the body of the updated car acquired a typical urban look and smooth outlines. Compared to the previous body type, which has more “masculine” features, the new Nissan has become universal, equally suitable for both men and women.

Rav 4 has also undergone significant changes, the exterior of which has been strongly criticized in the past for its obvious “femininity”. The developers of the new design gave the car a slight aggressiveness due to the arrow-shaped LED (like the competitor) headlights, additional curves of the hood and grille. According to motorists, in terms of appearance, the Nissan X-Trail remained the favorite, leaving its rival, albeit by a slight margin, behind.

Interior and functionality

In the aspect of the organization of the internal space of models before 2012, Nissan also had more advantages. However, in the updated versions of the car, there are fewer differences in the interior. Both X-Trail and RAV 4 have acquired ergonomic instrument panels with a convenient location of the main functional devices. But at the same time, it is not possible to say which is better in terms of the location of optional buttons and keys - nissan x trail or toyota rav4. In both cases, there is limited access to certain options. So, in Nissan, the seat heating keys are located on the central armrest, in Rav 4 they are also located at the bottom of the instrument panel. In both cases, the driver will have to take their eyes off the controls to enable this option.

In terms of interior trim, Nissan again (albeit slightly) outperforms its rival. In its interior, materials are organically combined with each other in texture and layout. In Rav 4, the dissonance between soft finishing leather and hard plastic elements is very striking.

The electronics of both cars are approximately equivalent in their functionality and capabilities. At the disposal of Toyota and Nissan drivers there are parking sensors, cameras, and the option of heated seats. A significant advantage of the X-Trail is the convenient location of the all-wheel drive system switch, located under the driver's hand on the center armrest.

At the same time, the RAV 4 features a more easy-to-view instrument panel with large, easy-to-read numbers. However, to switch all-wheel drive in Toyota, the driver will have to spend time - this function is so complicated and ill-conceived.

The lack of dual-zone climate control in the RAV 4 is compensated by the presence of the option of heated rear seats. In this regard, competitors are not inferior to each other, although the solutions used constructively in them have fundamental differences.

Both cars have good sound insulation. Here, the developers of the updated Toyota took into account the criticism of motorists who noted increased noise in the cabin of the 2012 models.

Engine and power potential

Updated versions of the Nissan X-Trail and Toyota RAV 4 are equipped with three types of engines. In both cases, these are gasoline and diesel power units.

Modern Rav 4 are equipped with such installations as:

  • gasoline 2.0 (146 hp);
  • gasoline 2.5 (180 hp);
  • diesel 2.2 (150 hp).

X-Trail is offered to customers based on such motors as:

  • gasoline 2.0 (144 hp);
  • gasoline 2.5 (171 hp);
  • diesel 1.6 (130 hp).

When comparing the power characteristics of competitors, the advantage of Toyota becomes obvious. However, faster acceleration and increased power of the Rav 4 power unit are both advantages of the car and its disadvantages. Whether these characteristics compensate for the high consumption of gasoline is up to the owner of Toyota to decide.

At the same time, the RAV 4 configurations provide for an automatic transmission, which Nissan does not have. You can buy an updated version of the X-Trail only on the basis of a manual transmission and a CVT. Toyota also offers a CVT.

In terms of handling, both cars received high ratings from experts. However, the behavior of competitors on the road, according to motorists, is significantly different. If Rav 4 characterizes a calm and measured move, then its opponent is characterized by dynamics and agility.

In terms of cross-country ability, which is of interest to all potential buyers who compare which is better - Nissan x trail or Toyota Rav 4, at first glance, the advantage is on the side of Nissan. Its ground clearance is 210 mm (against 197 mm RAV4). However, given the configuration of both cars, it is worth remembering that the automatic transmission, which only Toyota has, demonstrates the best off-road patency. The owners of the new X-Trail in such conditions will have to rely on their own skills and experience, managing the "mechanics" or the variator.

Price

One of the significant purchase criteria, which is taken into account by all car buyers without exception, is the cost of the vehicle. In this regard, the updated Toyota Rav 4 models are superior to their competitor. The higher price (even for base trims) here is due to the fact that Toyota offers customers cars with a wide range of features and capabilities. Modern versions of Rav 4 are characterized by increased power of cars, their improved and updated options. In addition, the Toyota brand, according to motorists, is considered to be more promoted in the world market. At the same time, the Nissan concern uncritically lags behind the rival, as evidenced by the excellent performance of the improved X-Trail.

The question of choosing between these two cars is a matter of taste, own claims and financial capabilities.

Relatively recently appeared Nissan Qashqai + 2 is not so easy and it was an opponent to pick up. The car is seven-seater. And other cars of this class (with the same number of seats) are much larger and much more expensive. Already the fight is not equal.

Nissan Qashqai and its worthy rival - Toyota RAV4

Therefore, a car was selected with similar technical characteristics, including dimensions and cost, but a five-seater. So, meet, in the left corner of the ring -. Today we find out who is better - Nissan Qashqai or Toyota Rav4. And may the best man win!

Details about rivals

Let's look at our fighters in more detail. On the one hand, there is a Toyota RAV4 2.0i 4hWD Cross Sport worth $32,500, and on the other hand, a Nissan Qashqai+2 2.0 dCi All-Mode in an expensive Tekna Pack for $33,140.

To accommodate a couple more seats in the platform of the five-seater Qashqai, the manufacturer had to lengthen the wheelbase by 13.5 cm, as well as the rear overhang by 7.5 cm. The rest is basically unchanged. Now the car can be considered a full-fledged crossover, and not an overgrown hatchback, which was a five-seater.

Equipment

Our Toyota is not the maximum configuration, but this does not mean that it is poor. The equipment of such a “minimal salary” is as follows: stabilization and anti-lock braking systems, force limiters and pretensioners for safety belts, for special Isofix fasteners and as many as seven air runs. Who's to say that Toyota doesn't think about safety?

The base Nissan also has all of the above, with the exception of the driver's foot air-running, there are six of them for a minimum configuration. So far, we have only touched on, but this is far from everything, as you understand. And what else did the manufacturer supply his offspring with? We will consider further, continuing the comparison of Nissan Qashqai and Toyota Rav4.

Interior, internal volumes

As already mentioned, we do not have a basic Qashqai, therefore, the interior is leather. Raf has fabric on the seats, but they are better heated than the competitor. It is felt even now, in early spring, what can I say. Again, the shape of the seats themselves is more comfortable for Toyota. Even with a sharp turn, you don’t slip out of them, like from leather Kashkaev ones.

There are no complaints about ergonomics in either car. Everything is at hand, modern and of high quality. Toyota has better instrument lighting than its rival. The devices themselves are optotronic, arranged more closely, which makes them easier to read.

Climate control is “more reasonable” at Rafa, the distribution of air flows is optimal in all directions. But the control of the climate control buttons requires getting used to both.

The middle row of Nissan seats is cramped for three. Salon Rav4 is wider - there is enough space for three in the back. Yes, and the tunnel in the center of the floor is barely noticeable, it does not interfere with the legs, which cannot be said about Qashqai.

If the Qashqai rear seats are not folded flush with the floor, then it becomes very small, about 125 liters of volume. And in the folded state of the seats, the luggage compartment space is 550 liters. Here Toyota is lagging behind, its volume is 506 liters.

Well, if you need to load absolutely colossal dimensions of the cargo, whether it be Nissan Qashqai or Toyota Rav4 - such an opportunity is provided. Folding the rear row of seats in Rafik or the middle row in Qashqai, we get 1470 and 1520 liters of volume, respectively. As you can see, here Toyota lost a bit.

It should also be noted that the two additional Nissan seats provide for the growth of passengers no more than 1.6 m, the ceiling does not allow higher. There are seat belts, armrests, and headrests that are adjustable.

Appearance

But if you are limited to the transportation of four passengers, and even adhere to extreme routes - Toyota Rav4 is the car for you. Numerous auto electronics to help you.

Here we have such a fight between Nissan Qashqai and Toyota Rav4. And how much you like it, write below. Until we meet again, good luck and a good car inspector on the track!
