The tracked amphibious transporter PTS is designed for amphibious crossing of artillery systems, wheeled and tracked artillery tractors, armored personnel carriers and vehicles when crossing water barriers.

Together with a floating trailer on a hook, the PTS conveyor also provides for the simultaneous landing of artillery systems and their tractors. On land, a floating trailer is transported by towing on a hook or on a conveyor loading platform.

With special equipment, the conveyor can be used in marine conditions.

The main parts of the PTS conveyor: body, power plant, power transmission, undercarriage, screw propellers and rudders, special equipment, electrical equipment and communications.

The conveyor is divided into three compartments: the control compartment, the power compartment and the cargo compartment.

Department of Management is located in the conveyor cabin, located in the bow of the hull. It contains the seats of the driver (left) and the conveyor commander (right), the levers and pedals of the conveyor control drives, the drive and control steering wheel, the ejector damper control lever, the driver’s central shield, switchboard, battery switch, gyro semi-compass with a converter, a cylinder with an air inlet reducer, a fuel distribution valve, a manual fuel priming pump, an air bleed valve from the fuel supply system, a relay-regulator, a winch, a radio station, two intercom devices, a three-color signaling unit and an air blower. Above the crew seat in the cabin roof there are two access hatches with covers.

Force branch located in the lower part of the hull (under the cargo compartment). It houses the engine, fuel and oil tanks, oil pump, oil and water coolers, air cleaner, heater, junction box with main clutch and starter, gearbox, planetary steering mechanisms with brakes, final drives, cardan shafts, propeller drive shafts, large evacuation pump, cabin heater and starter relay. On the bottom of the power compartment inside the transverse beams are the torsion shafts of the undercarriage suspension. In the bottom, under the drain plugs of the units and assemblies of the power plant and power transmission, there are hatches with covers. There is a drain valve to drain the water from the conveyor. From above, the power compartment is closed by roadway ruts and removable hoods and grilles.

cargo compartment located in the power department. It has two tracks that form a cargo platform for transported goods. In front, the cargo compartment is limited by the rear wall of the cab, from the sides - by the sides of the hull and at the back - by a folding side. Batteries are located at the rear wall of the cab. Outside the machine are attached: wave guard, headlights, position lights and towing device. In the stern there are propellers and rudders.

The PTS amphibious transporter is designed to cross wide water barriers for personnel, wheeled vehicles, artillery systems and materiel. For the simultaneous crossing of the artillery system and the tractor, the PKP wheeled floating trailer is included in the vehicle kit. In this case, the artillery system is transported on a trailer, and the tractor in the conveyor.
The PTS transporter can also be used to transport personnel and cargo over rough and wetlands. Carrying capacity on water is 10 tons (with a buoyancy margin of 30%), when transported by land 5 tons.

The PTS transporter can be used during amphibious assault operations. For this purpose, it is equipped with a gyro-semi-compass. Additional marine equipment (exhaust extensions, cockpit glazing protection, sealed canopy, two powerful bilge pumps provide seaworthiness up to 4-5 points.

For one trip, the PTS transporter can transport: two 85-mm cannons with crews or guns and howitzers of caliber from 122 to 152, one each with crews or 12 wounded on stretchers or 72 soldiers with full armament or two vehicles of the UAZ-469 type or a car from UAZ -452 to Ural -4320 (without cargo).
The PTS conveyor cabin is double sealed, equipped with a heater and an air blower with a filter, which allows the crew to work without gas masks.
Loading is carried out on land through a folding tailgate with ramps. Opening and closing of a back board is carried out by means of two manual mini winches. But the ramps have to be tilted and raised manually.
Self-propelled equipment drives into the body by self-propelled, non-self-propelled equipment is dragged into the body by a conveyor winch driven by the base engine.

Movement on the water is carried out using two propellers. The propellers can be activated simultaneously with the drive of the tracks, which increases the capabilities of the machine when entering / leaving the water and driving in shallow water. The maximum permissible speed for the operation of the machine is 3m/sec. Due to the reduced specific pressure on the ground, the machine has good maneuverability in wetlands. The winch drive from the base engine provides full ability to self-pull the machine when stuck or overcoming steep slopes.

The predecessor of the PTS was the K-61 tracked carrier, a further development of the PTS-2. Modernization of the PTS transporter PTS-M was equipped with a diesel cabin and body heater, which increased the capabilities of the vehicle during operations in winter conditions, and excluded the possibility of ice freezing on the sides of the vehicle.
PTS were in service with the airborne assault company of the engineer-sapper battalion of a motorized rifle (tank) division - 1 platoon (9 vehicles); in a separate airborne battalion of the district - 2 companies (36 vehicles).

Floating conveyor PTS-2

PTS-2 in wartime, it is used to transport personnel and equipment during amphibious assault operations. It has a gyro semi-compass, additionally equipped with marine equipment (exhaust system extension, glass protection, cockpit, sealed awning, pumping pumps allow you to confidently stay on the water surface with waves up to 3 points.

The civilian use of the PTS-2 has found itself in remote areas of Russia for the transfer of construction equipment, cars and trucks, cargo and people to the development site.

In the regions of the Russian Federation and foreign countries, floating conveyors are used in the elimination of the consequences of natural disasters, floods and in rescue operations.

Once again about amphibians (the final chapter of the fourth part of the article)

In the final chapter of the fourth part of the article, it is supposed to consider amphibious tracked vehicles of engineering and automotive equipment that are in service with the Soviet and Russian troops.

The 75th anniversary of the defeat of the Germans near Moscow is approaching. In this regard, it should be noted that even the severe frosts that fettered the rivers in 1941 did not serve as a basis for canceling the need to force water barriers by swimming during the offensive.

The counteroffensive began on December 5-6, 1941 and was carried out by the troops of the Western, Kalinin and Southwestern fronts. The result of it was the liberation of 11 thousand settlements.

Rokossovsky's army happened to advance in the Istra region. The Germans blew up the dam, and a wall of icy water swept away everything in its path. The Siberians of Beloborodov had to force cross under enemy fire this stream of water and blocks of ice, using improvised means - rafts, gates and fence doors, straw mattresses and rare, at that time in the army, rubber boats.

This fact of history once again emphasizes the need to equip troops with amphibians.

Already in the Soviet period, engineering troops in a number of cases solved the problem of building crossings in the most difficult conditions. So in December 1979, a floating bridge across the Amu Darya River had to be built. The pontooners had to build a bridge in the face of the threat of enemy fire, relying only on their own forces. And the course of the river at this time of the year practically did not allow crossing. Anchors from pontoons and boats barely held the bridge tape, even special anchor anchors had to be invented.

Given the vast experience in the use of engineering troops, the designers of Soviet amphibians intended for engineering units initially laid down the possibility of overcoming all the rivers of Eurasia by these machines at any time of the year.

The first such tracked amphibian was the K-61 amphibious tracked carrier, developed in 1948. The amphibian was developed at the Design Bureau of Engineering Troops under the leadership of A.F. Kravtsov on the basis of the M-2 artillery tractor that existed at that time ..

Caterpillar amphibious conveyor K-61 was intended for the landing crossing of artillery pieces, wheeled artillery tractors and rifle units. .

The vehicle was put into service on May 16, 1950 by Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR No. 1952-752. The transporter was produced by the Kryukov Carriage Works (Kremenchug, Ukraine) from 1950 to 1958, and from 1958 to 1965 the production of the car was carried out by the Stroymashina plant in Izhevsk.

Scheme of the general layout of the K-61 / Image: e-libra.ru

The machine had a steel sealed displacement hull. A heavy engine, main clutch (clutch) and gearbox were placed in the center of the body. Behind it, towards the nose of the hull, there was a transfer case (RK), from which the power flow was transmitted through the main gear to the final drives and to the drive wheels. From the RK, the power flow was transmitted to the winch and to the navigable propulsion unit, represented by two propellers located in the tunnels of the stern of the hull. The tailgate of the hull is hinged with ramps. A wave-reflecting shield is used in the bow of the hull.

The machine is equipped with a two-stroke forced diesel engine YaAZ-204V with a capacity of 130 hp, installed in the middle part of the hull. In the bow there is a winch with a pulling force of 4.5 tons, equipped with a cable 50 m long.

As mentioned above, two steel three-blade right-handed propellers with a diameter of 600 mm, each located in its own hydrodynamic tunnel, were used as a water propulsion device on the amphibian. The design of such propellers has already been considered by us in the second part of this article. Immediately behind the propellers there are feather rudders connected by a mechanical drive with a steering wheel located in the control cabin. The circulation diameter on the water when using the rudders is approximately 30 meters, and when the propellers are “fighted”, the conveyor turns on the spot without translational movement.

The water pumping system is represented by two vane water pumping pumps with a capacity of 400 l / min, driven by the RC. The water intakes of the pumps are located: one - in the rear part of the body, the second - in the middle part. When the engine is stopped, a hand pump is used. Buoyancy margin with full load - 10%.

Conclusion: the floating conveyor K-61 is able to overcome all the flat rivers of Eurasia year-round, semi-mountain rivers - only after the recession of the flood.

Floating conveyors were further developed in the development of floating tracked conveyors of the Soviet period - PTS in 1961, PTS-M in 1965, PTS-2 - 1973 and PTS-3 - 1988. The Soviet period ended with the development of PTS-4, the machine was not adopted in connection with the collapse of the USSR.

It is proposed to consider the features of each of these conveyors.

Floating transporter PTS was developed on the basis of units and assemblies of the artillery tractor of the medium ATS-59 and the T-54 tank at the Kryukov Carriage Works under the leadership of the chief designer E.E. Lenzius in 1961. The machine was produced by the Lugansk Diesel Locomotive Plant. The general layout of the machine was similar to that of the K-61.

The use of a more powerful V-54P engine (350 hp) on the machine made it possible to significantly increase the displacement of the steel sealed hull and increase the speed of movement on water up to 11 km / h.

The buoyancy margin of an amphibian with a full load was 30%. . The conveyor can be used in amphibious operations. For these purposes, a gyro-semi-compass was installed on it. The hull was equipped with a sealed non-armored control cabin, but already equipped with a FVU and a heater. As additional marine equipment, exhaust extensions, glazing protection, a sealed awning and two powerful bilge pumps with a capacity of 400 and 800 l / min, respectively, were used. The reserve of buoyancy allows the use of amphibians with waves up to 4-5 points. The winch is able to provide self-pulling of the machine when overcoming steep slopes of the coast. On the car, a Luna searchlight with a beam range of up to 800 m was used as additional equipment for the headlights. The car is equipped with a PNV-57T night vision device. On the amphibian, a radio station R-113 or R-123 (tank) was installed.

For the simultaneous crossing of the artillery system and the artillery tractor, it was possible to attach a floating wheeled trailer (PKP) with a carrying capacity of 5 tons to the PTS. Additional floats were attached to each side of the trailer. Parts were equipped with trailers at the rate of 1 trailer for 2 PTS conveyors then who came to replace him PTS-2. When towing a trailer through water, the speed is reduced by about 25%.

The movement of the car on the water was carried out due to the water mover, which turned on when the tracks were not switched off, which was especially helpful when the car was moving in shallow water and when going ashore.

The waterway propeller remained of the propeller type, similar to the K-61, but only of greater productivity. The screw had three blades, the diameter of the screw was 650 mm. Feather rudders for turning on the water remained immediately behind the propellers, their drive remained mechanical from the helm. To pump water out of the housing, two centrifugal pumps were installed with a capacity: small - 400 l / min, large - 4000 l / min. .

The operation of the machine showed that the controllability on the water was insufficient .. This is due to the fact that at high revolutions of the propellers it was almost impossible to turn the rudders with a mechanical steering wheel (without an amplifier) due to the high velocity pressure of the jet ejected by the propeller. And when the speed was reset, due to the large mass, the amphibian became uncontrollable. It remained to control the propellers, letting them scatter, but switching the propeller took a long time. So managing the TCP on the water required huge skills. The circulation diameter on the water was about 90 meters.

In 1965, under the leadership of E.E. Lenzius was developed on the basis of PTS amphibian PTS-M.

The amphibian differed from the PTS by installing an FVU with a diesel air heater in the cockpit, a tubular frame with a hermetically sealed awning was used. The body under the canopy was heated by an air heater (fuel for the heater was diesel).

Heaters were very important, especially when sailing on the sea, as they contributed to the melting of frozen ice.

The cargo platform has been increased from 18.5 sq.m to 20.54 sq.m. A set of sanitary equipment was placed in the back - 12 stretchers. A new radio station was used on the car ..

The production of machines was deployed at the Luganskteplovoz enterprise.

Floating conveyor PTS-2

The floating transporter PTS-2 is designed to cross wide water obstacles for personnel, wheeled vehicles, artillery systems and materiel. For the simultaneous crossing of the artillery system and the tractor, a PKP wheeled floating trailer can be attached to the PTS-2. In this case, the artillery system is transported on a trailer, and the tractor and gun crew are transported in a conveyor.

The transporter can also be used to transport personnel and cargo over rough and wetlands.
Carrying capacity on water and on land is 12 tons (with a buoyancy margin of 46%), which is 2 tons more than the capabilities of the old PTS type machine.

In the picture on the right: loading a ZIL-131 car into the PTS-2.

The conveyor is equipped with a system of protection against toxic substances and radioactive substances. The crew in the cockpit can work without personal protective equipment.

A hydraulically controlled self-digging device is suspended under the tailgate, thanks to which the crew has the opportunity to equip a shelter for the machine on their own.

From the author. Well, this device is more likely for big bosses and for big headquarters. Only there they can believe that such gizmos can really do something. If a similar device suspended under the lower frontal sheet of the T-72 tank still really makes the work of the crew a little easier on the excerpt of the trench (it only makes it easier!), And even then in very soft soil, then it can be believed that the PTS-2 can really dig itself in just a pretty naive person. Opening a shelter for the PTS-2 is still the same task even for the excavated MDK machine. Estimate for yourself - 160 cubic meters of soil need to be removed and moved. And from a depth of 3 meters. This is at least an hour of time for MDK.
Although, fools are not kept in large headquarters. They are well aware of the capabilities of any machine. But for staff it is convenient for operational-tactical calculations. The regulations stipulate that the PTS-2 tears off its shelter itself. This means that the calculations are simplified. And there, in the troops, soldiers and commanders will get out on their own. We will press, we will shout, we will intimidate - they will come up with something.

PTS-2 can also be used in amphibious assault operations. For this purpose, it is equipped with a gyro-semi-compass. Additional marine equipment (exhaust extensions, cockpit glazing protection, sealed canopy, two powerful bilge pumps provide seaworthiness up to 3 points.

For one trip, the transporter can transport (options):
* 12 wounded on stretchers,
* 75 motorized infantry soldiers with full weapons and equipment,
*2 guns up to 85 mm caliber. including calculations,
*1 gun caliber from 85 to 122 mm. including calculations,
*1 howitzer caliber 122-152 mm. with the calculations
*1 vehicle with a total weight of up to 12 tons.

The cabin is triple sealed, equipped with a heater and an air blower with a filter, which allows the crew to work without gas masks. It has anti-noise and thermal insulation, heating system. The glazing is equipped with windshield wipers and glass heating.
The commander's hatch is equipped with a machine gun turret, however, the machine gun is not included in the vehicle.
The cabin has two hatches for going up and a door for accessing the cargo platform.

Loading is carried out on land through a folding tailgate with ramps. The opening and closing of the tailgate is carried out using a hydraulic system. But the ramps have to be tilted and raised manually.
Self-propelled equipment drives into the body by self-propelled, non-self-propelled equipment is dragged into the body by a conveyor winch driven by the base engine.

The predecessor of the PTS-2 was the PTS tracked carrier and its modification PTS-M.
