Datsun is where it is made. Datsun what kind of car

Datsun is one of the Japanese automobile brands owned by Nissan. Prior to the takeover by Nissan, the production of cars under its own brand Datsun began in 1931. Nissan discontinued Datsun in 1986, but relaunched it in 2013 as a brand for low cost cars made for emerging markets.

Origin of Datsun

Even before the Datsun brand, the DAT was born in 1914 by the Kaishinsha Motorcar Works in Tokyo. The name of the new car was an abbreviation of the names of the following partners of the company:

Den Kenjiro - D (田健)

Aoyama Rokuro - A (青山禄)

Takeuchi Meitaro - T (竹内明太郎)

The Kaishinsha Motorcar Works was renamed in 1918, seven years after their inception, as the Kaishinsha Motorcar Co. In 1925 the company was again renamed DAT Motorcar Co. The company's production was focused on trucks, as there was almost no consumer market for passenger cars at the time. Beginning in 1918, the first DAT trucks were assembled for military use. Low demand in the military market during the 1920s led DAT to consider merging with other auto industry firms.

In 1926, Tokyo-based DAT Motors merged with Jitsuyo Jidosha Co., located in Osaka and also known as Jitsuyo Motors (established in 1919 as a subsidiary of Kubota). In Osaka in 1920, Jitsuyo Jidosha began producing a three-wheeled Gorham enclosed cab car, and produced a four-wheeled version the following year. From 1923 to 1925 the company produced cars and trucks under the name Lila.

In 1930, the Japanese government issued a regulation allowing cars with an engine capacity of up to 500 cc to be driven without a driver's license. DAT Jidosha Seizo Co., Ltd. began developing a series of 495cc cars to capture a new market segment, naming the new small cars "Datson" - which means "Son of DAT".

In 1931, DAT Jidosha Seizo Co., Ltd. became a wholly owned subsidiary of Tobata Casting Co., Ltd. By this time, the first cars with 495 cm³ engines were assembled. The first series of cars was called Datson Type 10, and about ten of these cars were sold in 1931. In 1932, about 150 cars were sold, calling the model Datson Type 11. In 1933, the Japanese government issued a new regulation that allows you to drive a car with an engine up to 750 cm³ without a driver's license. Datsun has increased the volume of its engines to the maximum allowed. These large vehicles were named Type 12.

In 1934, the company name was changed to Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. When Nissan took control of DAT, the name "Datson" was changed to "Datsun" because "son" also means "loss" from the Japanese 損 and also after the sun that appears on the national flag.

By 1935, the company had established a veritable production line following the example of Henry Ford, producing a car very similar to the Austin 7. There is evidence that six of these early Datsuns were exported to New Zealand in 1936.

After Japan entered the war with China in 1937, passenger car production was limited. Therefore, by 1938, the Datsun factory was focused on building trucks for the Imperial Japanese Army.

When the Pacific War ended, Datsun provided transport for the occupying forces. This continued until automobile production resumed in 1947. As before the war, Datsun models were still borrowed from Austin Motor Company cars: Austin A40 Devon and Austin A40 Somerset.

In 1958, deliveries of Datsun cars to the United States began, and in 1964, Nissan became the first Japanese company to enter the top ten largest auto importers in the United States.

In 1959, Nissan's first overseas assembly plant was opened in Taiwan.

In 1962, deliveries of cars to Europe began.

In 1976, thanks to its own fleet, Nissan became the largest car exporter in the world.

In 1981, Nissan signed an agreement with Volkswagen to manufacture and sell passenger cars in Japan.

In the autumn of 1981, the decision was announced: to abandon the use of the Datsun brand name in order to strengthen the Nissan brand.

In 2001, Nissan launched the D22 pickup truck in Japan under the name Datsun. However, this time, the use of the trademark was completely limited to this one particular model. The production of this model was between May 2001 and October 2002.

On March 20, 2012, it was announced that Nissan would revive the Datsun marque for use in Indonesia, South Africa, India and Russia.

In February 2014, the Redi-Go concept car was unveiled. The Redi-Go crossover is expected to hit Indian shores by mid-2015.

In April 2014, the first model for the Russian market Datsun on-Do based on the Lada Granta was launched.

Modern models:

Datsun Go (since 2013)

Datsun Go+ (since 2013)

Datsun on-Do (since 2014)

At one time, the Kalina conveyor became a real breakthrough for the domestic auto industry. In fact, for the novelty under the Lada brand, according to the most relevant patterns, a separate plant was tailored inside the plant: absolutely new and really modern welding, painting and assembly complexes. The robotic welding lines were supplied by Kuka and the fully automated paint shop by Eisenmann. It turned out light, clean, technologically advanced, the quality of parts and the level of assembly have grown. And, to be honest, then Kalina seemed to be a very high-quality and modern answer to the global auto industry.

However, over time it turned out that the berry was not ripe enough. Over time, the budget Granta came out as a thoroughly revised version, and a little more than a year ago, the turn of the update came to Kalina itself (for details, see the material ""). And now, on the conveyor where Kalinas and Grants are assembled, there is a new neighbor, Datsun on-DO. The material "" tells about the key features of the novelty. But that is the first sensations from the new car, and now it is time to evaluate how Russian hands will assemble the Japanese sedan.

What were the Japanese able to teach VAZ people? Much. The Russian-Japanese team took the original Lada Granta and carefully assessed the quality of this car. There were 10 serious problems that customers are not ready to put up with: the gearbox is noisy, the doors do not close well ... We managed to solve eight tasks from the list right away, and two (I wonder which ones?), According to the engineers, turned out to be “not too critical”. Then they made a second list called “How should Grant be improved so that the car becomes better and seems more expensive?”. Again ten points, but now - all ten are fulfilled. This is how on-DO appeared.

To the hands that collect he-DO, the Japanese have a minimum of claims. Either massive layoffs have affected - people are simply afraid to spoil, fearing to lose their jobs, or the fruits of the work begun 3 years ago to introduce a common quality system for the Renault-Nissan alliance have ripened. Before a freshly assembled car goes to the finished product site, it has to go through 24 quality control posts, and, according to production manager Igor Bakulin, “employees are seriously motivated not to miss defects.”

But Bo Andersson taught even more to the workers of the Togliatti auto giant. When a manager of Swedish origin just came to AvtoVAZ, the first thing he did was to audit the factory toilets. And he was extremely surprised: “What kind of production culture can we talk about if our employees are not able to accurately relieve themselves?!”, - the Swede was indignant. In turn, the VAZ workers were surprised at the cleanliness of the new president: the entire conveyor stopped when Andersson bent down to pick up a cigarette butt specially thrown before his arrival. The president! Picks up cigarette butts!

Six months have passed. Middle and top managers are already accustomed to daily meetings: at 7 am, the Swede requires a clear report on quality, volume and costs. Reports are heard, questions are asked, discussions are underway. In general, instead of a whirlwind of documents - live communication and real work. And ordinary workers are used to the fact that the president can suddenly appear on the assembly line and see how you are - yes, you personally! - fixed the steering wheel or fitted the door trim. And they also got rid of the devastation, sorry, in the toilets. I checked - the toilets for conveyor operators are clean. Can we do it whenever we want? More precisely, when they make you want to.

In the minds of devastation, it seems, also became less. At least, with the advent of "Uncle Boo", as Andersson is secretly called at the plant, the quality indicators have increased by 25% at once. Although, of course, a reasonable question arises: have indicators or quality increased? I would like to believe that the second. Moreover, Igor Bakulin, who was in charge of the Kalinovskiy conveyor, proudly noted: “The indicators of marriage are within tolerances! What are the permissions? Serious problems have practically ceased to occur! Brave claim. In general, the people of Togliatti have grown bolder: if earlier the engineers seemed to justify themselves by conducting tours of the plant, now they speak confidently, even boldly.

And this is by no means an ostentatious confidence: now the VAZ workers sincerely believe in their product - after all, the Japanese trust them. Many thought that, despite the common conveyor, separate posts would be organized for the Japanese sedan - for example, additional quality control - but we saw with our own eyes that Datsuns and Grants are assembled in exactly the same way. According to representatives of both brands, the quality is the same. “We have no margin for error,” says Datsun CEO Vincent Kobe. - If the consumer finds shortcomings, this will jeopardize the success of the brand in the Russian market. We cannot allow this! Therefore, we carefully control how AvtoVAZ makes our cars.”

The fact that Lada Granta and Datsun on-DO are cars of the same level is also proved by the recently announced price tag. In the basic version of Access, which offers electric power steering and steering wheel height adjustment, heated front seats, folding rear seats, ABS, as well as a driver airbag and an Isofix child seat attachment system, Datsun is available for just 329 thousand rubles. For comparison, a similarly equipped Grant costs 324,400 rubles. But! There is no ABS in the equipment list of the Russian sedan, but it is 5 “horses” more powerful (87 hp versus 82 hp).

At the same time, on-DO has a slightly larger trunk, better sound insulation, more “thoroughbred” suspension and steering settings (the latter - according to the creators of the car, since the driving presentation is scheduled for early autumn) ... And the appearance of the “pseudo-Japanese” is a little fresher. And the management of the brand promises a higher level of service: they say that the managers of car dealerships, of which only 25 will open at first, will be more polite, and the service will be of better quality. Terrible thing! With this approach, it is better to choose a Datsun than Kalina or Grant ...

I do not want to whip up a panic, but believe that such prices will not last long. As soon as the public tastes the newly minted Asian, the Russian representative office will immediately rewrite the price tags. And everyone seems to understand this: during the “production” presentation, on-DO was certified exclusively as a “more expensive alternative to Grant”. Agree that it is impossible to be a "more expensive alternative" with the same price lists. However, we do not yet know how much the "stuffed" versions of Trust (Trust) and Dream (Dream) will cost - details will be announced next week.

So Lada Granta and Datsun on-DO will differ in prices and nuances. Because both machines consist of almost identical parts and are assembled with the same hands. And those arms seem to be growing out of the right place. Because AvtoVAZ is changing before our eyes: “Did you find answers to your questions?” - VAZ engineers constantly asked me. Although only 12 months ago, the Togliatti auto giant showed itself to be an impregnable block, where it was useless to find answers to questions (details - in the material ""). Is openness a sign of honesty? And confidence. In myself and my cars.

DATSUN ERA

DATSUN ERA

It all started with the Kaishin Sha Motor Works in Azabu-Hiru, Tokyo.

1911

The founder of the factory, 37-year-old Masujiro Hashimoto (1875-1944), graduated from the Tokyo Industrial School in Kuramae, after which the Ministry of Agriculture and Trade of Japan sent him as the best graduate to study engineering in the United States. Hashimoto-san returned to Japan with the firm intention of starting car production.

1914

Hashimoto's cars go on sale under the name DAT. This abbreviation is formed from the initial letters of the main investors of the Kaishin-sha factory, Kinjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama and Meitaro Takeuchi. This name also reflects the concept of DAT cars of that time: Durable - reliable, Attractive - attractive, Trustworthy - trustworthy.

1919

Jitsuyo Jidosha Seizo Kaisha (Practical Vehicle Company) is established in Osaka City. She is considered to be another progenitor of the modern Datsun. The company produces three- and four-wheel auto rickshaws designed by the American aircraft designer William Gorham (1888-1949). A passionate Japanophile, Mr. Gorham settled in Japan, took the name Gohamo Katsundo, and did not leave the islands even during World War II. Due to the fact that the company "Jitsuyo Jidosha Seizo Kaisha" used American machine tools, as well as imported parts and materials from the United States, Gorham-type cars were famous for their quality and reliability.

1926

Kwaishin-sha and Jitsuyo Jidosha Seizo Kaisha are merged. The new company is named "DAT Jidosha Seizo" (DAT Jidosha Seizo).

1931

In Osaka, at the plant, formerly owned by the company "Jitsuyo Jidosha Seizo Kaisha", the production of the Datson subcompact car begins. Literally, the name is translated as “son of DAT”, but it would be more accurate to say “child of DAT”. Later, the name of the car was changed to Datsun, because "son" is consonant with the Japanese word for "loss". Brand cars get a new emblem.

1933

On December 26, everything related to the production of cars in the Nihon Sanyo zaibatsu is transferred to the new company Jidosha Seizo Kabushiki Kaisha. English name - Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Production of the Datsun 12 begins.

1934

In June, the company is renamed Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. 59% of its assets are owned by Nihon Sanyo, 39% by Tobata Foundry, and the remaining 2% is distributed among members of the Yoshisuke Ayukawa family. In April, the production of Datsun 13 begins. The first samples of cars are exported.

1935

On April 12, the opening of a new plant in Yokohama took place. This is the first enterprise in Japan where the production of cars was carried out by a conveyor method. The first model to roll off the conveyor belt was the Datsun 14 sedan. The plant produced about 500 cars per month.

1955

In January, the production of the Datsun 110 begins. After several attempts to build a state-of-the-art car, this is the first real success. At the Second Tokyo Motor Show, which opened in May in Hibuya Park, the Datsun 110 became a real sensation.

1957

Since November 1957, the Datsun 1000, also known as the Datsun 210, has been produced. Although it looks like the Datsun 110, it summarizes the experience gained from communicating with Austin specialists.

1958

On January 10, the Datsun S211 walking roadster was demonstrated on the roof of the Tokyo department store Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi. Its designer, Hiro Ohta, followed the best examples of British sports cars of the day.

1959

In August, the Datsun Bluebird 310 is presented - a new word in the history of the brand. The designer of the model is Teichi Hara. The car received a load-bearing body of modern proportions (length - 3910 mm, wheelbase - 2280 mm) and an independent double wishbone front suspension. The car's name, "The Blue Bird", refers to a play by Maurice Maeterlinck.

1961

In September, the Nissan Mexicana S.A. manufacturing division was formed. de C.V. Five years later, it will start producing cars.

1966

On February 19, the company announces the results of the competition for the name of a new subcompact model, known under the in-house designation Datsun B10. Most of the eight and a half million participants preferred the name Sunny - "Sunny". Datsun Sunny is first presented to the general public in April, and since June, its mass production begins at the Zama plant.

2012

In March, Carlos Ghosn, President and Chief Executive Officer, announced plans for Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. to revive the Datsun brand as part of the Power 88 strategic development plan.

On July 15, 2013, Carlos Ghosn introduced the new Datsun Go in India. The model is designed for young buyers. The three pillars of the revived Datsun are Dream (Dream), Access (Accessibility) and Trust (Trust). Datsun vehicles will be introduced to the fastest growing markets of India, Indonesia, Russia and South Africa.

Have you long dreamed of changing your old but beloved Lada to something newer? But the budget does not allow you to drastically change the brand of cars? Then we bring to your attention an improved Lada in the Japanese style.

What does "Japanese style" mean?

In less than half a century, the event that everyone had been waiting for so long, the revival of the Datsan brand, happened. I would like to note: the show of this model took place in Moscow.

At this meeting, Japanese manufacturers showed their vision of the Datsun car. Finally, everyone lived up to the moment when foreign car performers began to take ideas from the Russian car industry.

And not vice versa. Few know. that this car, which is made in Japan, is an improved model of our compatriot Lada Kalina.

Appearance: for or against

Japanese manufacturers faced a difficult task: to make a new brand of car as different as possible from Lada Kalina. And they partially coped with this task.

If the appearance of Lada familiar to our eyes, as if coming from the 90s, evokes the spirit of the past and Soviet times, then the Japanese car tells us: “I am a faceted gem, look at my chiseled edges.”

The front view of the new car is not very different from the view of the already well-known Lada Kalina, so the question of one hundred percent similarity with Lada does not make sense. The Japanese Mi-Do has a neat and chiselled front bumper.

Also, the car has modern optics of a unique shape, which made it possible to complete the image of a Japanese car. But if you do not find fault with trifles, then outwardly the two main cars of the Russian and Japanese automobile industries are not much different.

Unless the Mi-Do wheel frames are slightly enlarged and the rear-view mirrors are slightly changed. On this, the differences visible to the naked eye end.

Dimensions

  • acceleration up to 100 km/h;
  • front-wheel drive;
  • tank volume: 50 l.

Datsun mi-Do has not become the most modern car, but its contribution to the development of both the Russian and Japanese car industry is obvious.

Japanese manufacturers, as always, acted wisely - they did not make fundamental changes to the technique, instead focusing on small improvements in order to achieve even greater perfection.

Therefore, we can expect other models to be even more welcome.

With the advent of new Datsun cars on the Russian market, many buyers have questions. How did you manage to set a cost of less than 400,000 rubles? Who will sell this car and, in general, where is the Datsun on-DO assembled? You will find answers to all these questions in this article. We will also consider the advantages of cars of these brands, the main disadvantages and the experience of drivers who have had or have these cars. Below in the photo is a Datsun car. These machines are discussed below.

Where is the Datsun on-DO assembled? Manufacturer country

Back in 2012, Nissan announced that they intended to revive the Datsun brand. The Japanese automobile giant decided to make budget cars under this brand for the market of underdeveloped countries. The main feature of such cars was their adaptation for each market separately. For example, for the Indian market, where only the price of a car plays a role, a Japanese Datsun of one configuration was created, for the Russian market - another. Given the fact that the Russians have higher requirements even for cheap models, Datsun had to try.

In addition, when developing a car, one has to take into account the prevailing climate in Russia and the quality of the road surface. It is also important that the engines and the fuel system perceive domestic gasoline. The Japanese decided that there are already similar cars on the Russian market - these are the Lada Kalina and the Lada Granta. Therefore, they decided not to bother and sign a contract with AvtoVAZ.

Cars "Lada" and "Datsun" have one platform

After that, it became clear where the Datsun on-DO was assembled. These Japanese cars are assembled in Tolyatti at the same factory and on the same production line as the Lada Kalina and Lada Granta cars. Also, the new "Datsun" are made on the same platform that is used in the models of the domestic auto industry. According to the head of the AvtoVAZ company, Dutsun will be an impetus in the development of the concern.

This also means that all improvements in Dutsun will appear very quickly in Kalina and Grants. For example, Datsun on-DO vehicles have reshaped exterior mirrors that significantly reduce wind noise at high speeds. This also helps to reduce mirror contamination. A similar solution will soon appear on Ladakh.

Why Japanese manufacturers chose platforms The fact is that they are cheap and simple, all components for them are produced in Russia. Therefore, the cost of spare parts is low. And so it happened that the new Datsun also have a low price due to the low cost of the platform.

Differences between Dutsun and Lada

Structurally, the cars "Datsun" and "Grant" have differences. The main one is the design of the exterior and interior. But as for the technical parameters, the models are identical. Moreover, Lada cars have several engine configurations - with 16 and 8 valves. Also, these cars can be equipped with an automatic or manual transmission. The Datsun car has only an 8-valve engine with a capacity of 87 horsepower and is also equipped with a manual or automatic transmission. There were also statements that a budget version of the Datsun with an engine with a connecting rod and piston group would appear, but there would be few such cars. Photos of cars "Datsun" and "Lada Grant" you can see in this section.

Improvements in Datsun

It was also important for Datsun to create advantages over Lada cars. Therefore, the developers have improved the sound insulation of the cabin. As a result, felt fenders appeared on the rear arches, which is why there was much less noise in the area of \u200b\u200bthe rear wheels. More cars received shock absorbers with improved parameters, other springs and brakes. You can appreciate all the advantages of new Japanese cars thanks to the Datsun on-DO test drive.

A unique feature of these Japanese-Russian cars is a huge trunk of 530 liters, which is 10 liters more than in Granta cars. Perhaps, in this class, it is the Datsun on-DO car that has the largest trunk.

Price

Considering where the Datsun on-DO is assembled, what platform and components are used here, one should not be surprised at the low price. On the official website, there is a promotional price for this car - 342,000 rubles with the participation of the buyer in the Datsun recycling program and when buying a car on credit.

Without discounts, a standard one with an 87 horsepower engine will cost 442,000 rubles. The most expensive Dream II equipment of this car with a 4-speed automatic transmission will cost 617,000 rubles. You can conduct a test drive "Datsun on-DO" in the company's branded car dealerships, which are in many cities of Russia.

Note that even in the basic version of this model there is a driver's airbag, heated seats and mirrors. The top-end configuration includes multimedia with a USB interface, a navigation system with Cityguide software, 4 airbags, an ESP system, and heated windshield.

Problems of Japanese-Russian joint production

Considering that Japanese cars are made at Russian factories where Ladas are produced with some problems, aren't Japanese manufacturers afraid that AvtoVAZ will spoil the attitude of buyers towards the Japanese brand? After all, the problem of Russian cars is by no means in the design. The quality of assembly work and weak components are the main shortcomings of domestic cars.

Consequently, when preparing a project for joint work with AvtoVAZ, Datsun paid attention to the modernization of production. In 2013, Nissan reviewed the assembly line and made about 40 recommendations for improving the production line. Comments were made in various areas, from quality control to recommendations for the manufacture of new containers for transporting parts. Today, the AvtoVAZ plant employs many foreigners who supervise and train.

Car Flaws and Dropped Engine Scandal

In recent months, there has been a lot of information on the Internet that engines are falling out in Datsun cars. That is, the motor mount breaks, and the engine literally sags under the hood, and sometimes even clings to the ground. This applies not only to On-Do models, but also to other cars from the line. In this case, the case is not isolated. Many owners of these machines complain about a similar design flaw.

Similar problems also arose on Lada Granta cars, but in the latter case, the owner managed to sue the company for about 900 thousand rubles. Therefore, there was such a precedent. However, the owners of Datsun cars are unsuccessfully trying to win the court. The fact is that the examination appointed by the court ruled that the engine falls out as a result of damage to the suspension and destruction of the engine mount brackets. This, according to Datsun, is due to non-compliance with operating rules, namely due to shock inertial loads on the engine brackets. Such loads arise as a result of driving a car over bumps in the road.

Forensic examination

It is worth noting that the examination does not reveal any manufacturing defects that would affect the strength characteristics of the motor brackets. This means that such supports are provided for by the design of the suspension, and are not an isolated case resulting from a defect or manufacturing defect. At the same time, Datsun does not compensate its customers and does not make repairs in accordance with the warranty, since the warranty book states that the service does not cover defects and breakdowns that arose as a result of non-compliance with the rules for using the car.

This suggests that cars of this brand are completely unsuitable for use on Russian roads. And in general, there is a technically incorrect calculation of the loads that are perceived by the brackets as a result of the operation of the car. And no matter how hard Datsun tries to write off such shortcomings for improper operation of cars, the problem exists.

Also, on various Internet portals and forums, users complain that in the official Datsun group of the VKontakte social network, group leaders tritely block users who complain and ask uncomfortable questions about drop-out motors.

Conclusion

And everything with these cars started well. The wonderful Japanese concern Nissan, which is trusted in Japan and around the world, has come to the Russian market to sell reliable cars of Japanese quality. Expectations were very good, and the cars, with their good performance, turned out to be worthy, until the well-known scandal with the engines happened. Most likely, the Datsun company itself has nothing to do with it, since the cars of this brand use the Lada car platform, and, as you know, there were similar precedents with the Grant.
