What is the trick to using an immobilizer in a car

When talking about a car theft warning system using personal identification, they usually mean a regular immobilizer. Unlike the additional option supplied to the car to enhance security functions in addition to the existing circuits, the standard immobilizer system is very deeply integrated into the design of the car.

In the most primitive version, the control board of a standard anti-theft device makes a decision - to give or not to give permission to start the engine and start moving. The principle of operation of the immobilizer is based on scanning the "secret" element in the ignition key, reading the wired information in a way that is almost impossible to interfere or control. This is a huge advantage of device systems over numerous alarm systems.

The distance at which the control board and the immobilizer key communicate does not exceed ten centimeters, a maximum of half a meter. This region of the magnetic field is guaranteed not to go beyond the cabin. It is almost impossible to wedge into the process of communication. The read set of signals is compared with the equivalent stored in the computer's memory, and possibly also duplicated in auxiliary blocks. Accordingly, the operation of the ECU is unlocked or not. If the result of the comparison is negative, which, by the way, cannot always be established visually, various security mechanisms are activated:

• permission can be given to start the engine of the machine with a parallel re-reading of the key. If the tolerance is not confirmed, the software can emulate the failure of various engine systems, up to its complete stop after a dozen or hundreds of meters of vehicle movement;
• a special signal is sent to the built-in GPS navigation and radio beacon systems. This allows you to activate tracking services for finding the machine, if such systems are installed.

Interesting! The regular immobilizer, unlike the additional one, controls the operation of the on-board computer directly, through a special CAB diagnostic bus. It is, as it were, part of the computer and the entire control system of the machine.

Attackers, not being able to infiltrate the work of the immobilizer, try to gain access using the banal hacking of the ignition lock and wiring. Therefore, often the control board itself has an additional deactivation mechanism if at least one of the control contacts of the device has been disabled.

An additional immobilizer is more vulnerable in this sense. . It does not have software control of the electrical circuits of the machine, the main actuators use external relays or triggers.

The logic of the immobilizer may depend on many reasons and conditions. Following one stereotype or one set of actions often greatly simplifies the task of hijacking for an attacker. The direct participation of a person in protecting a car from opening security systems is by no means the most crazy idea. The more automated the control of the car's immobilizer, the higher the chances of breaking it with the help of all kinds of scanning equipment.

The most exotic version of the immobilizer is considered to be, in which a special sensor is built in, capable of scanning and recognizing the driver's fingerprint. The method is quite spectacular, and can provide high reliability of the immobilizer, subject to safety rules, do not leave fingerprints in places accessible to the criminal. Therefore, in some expensive car models, conventional push-button dials are installed, in which the immobilizer function is duplicated by a digital code entered manually by the driver. Another type of human participation in the implementation of the functions of protecting a car from unauthorized intrusion is the use of special wearable or personal keys with a chip. A transponder card or microchip can be inserted into a plastic card or wrist watch, any item of personal belongings, without drawing attention to its existence. The immobilizer control board can control the presence of the key and its contents in the car remotely.

There was such a method as an answer to the well-known in the criminal world method of stealing a car called "parachute". Criminals choose the moment when the owner of the car, after the start of movement, stops for ten seconds, for example, at a traffic light or a pedestrian crossing. Next comes a sudden attack on the driver and throwing him out of the car with the engine running. With a working system of the device, it is impossible to steal a car if the victim of the attack does not voluntarily report or hand over the key, because the criminals do not know what it looks like and where the immobilizer transponder is located.
