Chevrolet Lanos - it can't be cheaper. Chevrolet Lanos

02.09.2019

Chevrolet Lanos is a Korean-made car. Model development began in 1992. It was released on the basis of Daewoo, was released in 1997 in Geneva. Around the same time, they planned to launch sales in Russia, but there were problems with the supply of spare parts, and in 2000 production was curtailed.

The foreign car appeared on the Russian market only in 2008. During the development phase, the main competitors were the Volkswagen Golf and Opel Astra. The car engine has common roots with Opel brand engines. Not surprisingly, one concern is GM.

However, do not forget that Chevrolet Lanos is an economy class car. He has a fairly attractive price is a vivid example of an inexpensive foreign car. In terms of quality, it is, of course, higher than cars like Daewoo Nexia (in fact, this is a direct replacement for this obsolete brand) and AvtoVAZ products. But, of course, you should not expect outstanding advantages, strength and durability from a car.

However, there are advantages to being economical, and this is not only the price. For example, you will never have problems with spare parts and they are inexpensive.

At one time, Lanos was one of the most popular cars in Russia. He seriously competed with the new models of Lada and Renault Logan and could not force out competitors, even with a lower price.

The car is not too popular today in the secondary market. But it is precisely due to this that the prices for it do not rise. Such a car in good condition is perfect for those who are looking for a simple, modest and inexpensive car option. However, when choosing, you need to pay attention to many nuances in order to drive a new car, and not repair it.

Engine problems

The 1.6 engine is quite reliable and lasts a long time. But, unfortunately, most often in Russia Lanos have 1.5 engines. And there are many problems with them. Very often, timing belts break, followed by bending of the valves. The same weak spot is the alternator drive belt. These parts need to be changed every 50-60 thousand kilometers. In order for parts to last longer, a lot of engine oil is required.

Before buying, be sure to ask if these belts have ever been changed on the car, and if so, when they were last changed. And, most likely, the answer “Never changed, nothing ever broke” does not bode well.

It's a good idea to drive the car before buying. And in no case do not buy it if you hear a knock in the engine area. This is a sure sign that the motor is on the verge of failure.

A plus to a short-lived engine is added such a disadvantage as high fuel consumption. Buying a car will turn out to be inexpensive, but this transport cannot be called economical.

Gearbox problems

Gearboxes, too, alas, are only enough for 50,000 kilometers. The clutch disc is very fragile in this mechanism. If you live in a big city and often stand in traffic jams, this part will serve you even less. A knowledgeable, experienced motorist will immediately change it to a more reliable one.

The novelty of the clutch disc is definitely worth asking. Look closely to see if the clutch pedal is slipping. Sometimes it happens that the clutch does not engage immediately when you press the pedal. All this clearly indicates that the clutch disc, if not yet out of order, is very close to it.

There are a few other minor drawbacks associated with the gearbox. You need to change the oil in it quite often, otherwise it starts to buzz a lot. Sometimes, for no apparent reason, the checkpoint rocker breaks. These are minor problems, will not cause you much trouble, and it is impossible to identify them at the purchase stage. Simply, if you are going to buy Lanos, you need to be prepared for this.

Salon cons

In the cabin you can find many small flaws. The most harmless of them is the creaking of the rear seats. Car owners often note not very good sound insulation. Car windows often fog up, especially in the rain. Some motorists have complained that the rear view mirror may fall off.

Such small problems are very easy to solve. The salon itself is not bad, if you buy a car for yourself alone, you can feel comfortable inside. But all these minor flaws negatively affect the overall impression, they can create additional troubles.

It's definitely not worth buying Chevrolet Lanos if you have a large family and you often go somewhere together. The interior of the car is cramped, incapable. The same can be said about the trunk. Therefore, if you need a car, for example, to travel to the country to carry crops in it, Lanos is clearly not your option.

As a serious drawback, a very unreliable radiator can be noted. And this is not just a bad cooling system, but constant leaks and breakdowns. Together with it, the thermostat and temperature sensors very often break down. Changing them is not expensive, but it is also an additional chore.

Problems with running and steering

The problem that literally everyone who has ever encountered a Chevrolet Lanos car is talking about is shock absorbers. They are very unreliable. Sufficiently comfortable suspension does not retain its condition and 50,000 kilometers. Bearings and ball joints often break as well.

If you've driven your potential car and heard a crunch, refuse the offer, no matter how lucrative it may seem to you. Parts will have to be changed in just a few weeks, or even earlier.

Turn the steering wheel and listen for any knocks. For another weak point of the car is the steering rack. This part is resistant to rust and corrosion. And this Chevrolet model is very unstable to corrosion.

Again, all these are small things that do not cost a lot of money to change. But it is better to find an option where you do not need to change anything.

Bottom line: Should you buy a Chevrolet Lanos?

Chevrolet Lanos is a cheap foreign car. Especially if you get a used one. But, as they say, the miser pays twice.

With this car, there are rarely serious breakdowns that require huge investments, but little things break often, and the car has a lot of weak points. And in the aggregate, the repair of each detail as a whole costs a pretty penny. Therefore, if you are going to buy a Chevrolet Lanos, think about whether you really need this particular car? It may be worth spending more money on the purchase, but buying a more reliable vehicle.

The distant appearance of the model

One of the mass cars, claiming the main role of "the first foreign car" was certainly the Chevrolet Lanos. Initially, the model was created and developed by the Korean Daewoo Automobile Plant and was called Daewoo Lanos. Plans for the development of the model appeared at the plant back in 1992, then the main competitors and contenders for further work were German Volkswagen Golf And Opel Astra. As a result, after painstaking work, together with German and English engineering companies, the car was presented to the public in 1997 at the Geneva Motor Show.

The car began to be mass-produced in the same year and continues to be produced to this day.

What are the positive qualities noted by the owners of the Chevrolet Lanos

Many motorists, having reseeded from domestic Zhiguli to Lanos, noted for the better the level of comfort, good sound insulation and convenience at work. In the top trim levels, air conditioning, power windows, power steering, a driver's front airbag and other little things were included.

The Lanos engine in tandem with a 5-speed manual transmission gave out acceptable dynamics both in the city and on the highway. Also, the positive aspects of the car include its suspension (despite its resource), which has moderately soft settings and responsive steering, according to the rack and pinion system.

Disadvantages and frequent malfunctions of Lanos

Lanos owners often complain about weak dampers and indeed it is. For a comfortable suspension, you have to pay on average already by 50 thousand mileage. Wheel bearings can boast the same disadvantage. catalytic converter problem and its burnout happens in almost every second car, when buying a used car, ask the owner about its availability. Many drivers knock out its contents and drive on. Disk clutch installed from the factory does not shine with longevity, usually its resource is 50-60 thousand. Also, the ignition module is considered to be a weak point, the performance of which can sometimes be called unpredictable.

In the cabin, a rare driver did not glue the rear-view mirror, usually it falls off in the first months of owning a new car. The creak of the lock of the rear row of seats, many are treated with electrical tape, winding it around a loop. The engine cooling system was also not without flaws; according to the owners, the cooling radiator flows and often fails. When selling a car. Chevrolet Lanos is considered bad selling car. the price of Lanos falls catastrophically fast.

Episode one. Lanos 1.5, 2003 release with complaints about increased fuel consumption.

Done before us: washed (twice) the fuel system, replaced high-voltage wires, spark plugs. There are no changes in fuel consumption, that is, a drop.

Episode two. Lanos 1.5 complaining about erratic idling.

RPMs keep going up and down for a long time. Then they go back to normal on their own. Done before us: the fuel system was flushed, the idle speed regulator was replaced (it is already the third one), the throttle position sensor was replaced. There are no job changes. As it was, so it remains.

Episode three. Sens 1.3 with complaints about boiling coolant due to the failure of the cooling fan.

At the same time, the power supply system of the fan is normal, and when it is turned on from the “Actuators” tab of the diagnostic program, everything turns on perfectly. Done before us: replaced the coolant temperature sensor (lost count, which one), replaced the thermostat, replaced the coolant, replaced the water pump (pump). A prayer has been read many times, but the fan still does not turn on.

Three different behaviors of cars are united by one malfunction.

Very often, Daewoo Lanos and Sens vehicles experience problems with the engine management system, which lead to increased fuel consumption, idling sway, jerking at forced idle and when driving smoothly in traffic jams or “through the yards”. There were also poor start-ups, "stupidity" when driving, unstable idling until the engine stopped.

LET'S REVIEW THE FIRST EPISODE

Idling: injection time - 1.8 (normal 1.1-1.3), intake manifold pressure 45-50 kPa (normal 32-34 kPa). We connect the discharge sensor of Postolovsky's USB oscilloscope to the intake manifold and see that the absolute pressure is 36 kPa. The engine control unit does not see the load correctly, or to be more precise, sees overestimated figures, as a result of which, at low and medium loads, the composition of the mixture and the ignition timing are incorrectly calculated. The result is increased consumption.

EPISODE TWO

Idling: all indicators are normal. Suddenly, the engine speed rises to about 1600 rpm and "hangs" in this position. We look at the monitor, but there is no idle flag, and the throttle position sensor for some reason shows that it is ajar by 2%, while no one is driving the car. Damn poltergeist! Having jumped a little between 1-3%, it suddenly returns to 0% just as unexpectedly, the speed is restored, and the motor rumbles at its prescribed 825 rpm as if nothing had happened. “Yeah, got it! Of course, the problem is in the throttle position sensor, ”many thought before that and changed it to a new one, but happiness never came. When coasting with the gear engaged on the descent, the car jerks unevenly in the same way, because it sees either a closed or ajar throttle.

EPISODE THREE

Sens 1.3, 2002 release. We open the cap of the expansion tank so that there is no pressure in the cooling system. We connect the "lace" and look at the monitor. The coolant temperature is 85 degrees, the idle speed is normal, the pressure in the intake manifold is a little high, but tolerable, and everything seems to be fine, and the coolant (and there is already only water, because the antifreeze has boiled away for a long time and many times) starts to boil. Can't be! After all, diagnostics show that there are only 85 degrees! We take a thermometer - and into the expansion tank. 100 degrees. There are already 86 on the monitor. Why?! “Of course, the coolant temperature sensor,” they thought, and have already changed several in different services. But for some reason, the real temperature is not displayed in the current parameters of the diagnostic program, and the fan does not turn on.

It seems to be three different problems. In fact, they are interrelated, and the failures described in the three cases are present in each of them to a greater or lesser extent.

There is only one reason - the problem of supplying sensors. In automotive wiring, to reduce the number of wires, and for convenience, two wires usually come out of the engine control unit (one negative sensor power wire and one plus 5 volts), then branching into several. At the branching point for speed (because there is no conveyor, and there is no time), the wires stripped of insulation are connected into one bundle with a metal crimp. From above, this case is wrapped with insulating tape or melted inside the cambric with polyethylene. For a different amount of time, which depends on the climatic conditions of operation and storage of the car, the wires begin to oxidize at the junctions. Thus, normal contact is lost, and, for example, normal ground does not reach the throttle sensor. At the same time, the voltage on the signal wire jumps up, and the system sees an ajar throttle, although the damper has not changed its position. In the case of a coolant temperature sensor, it will show a lower temperature, and the intake manifold absolute pressure sensor will show a higher pressure. With insufficient contact in the reference five-volt arm, the distortion of the sensor readings will be the same, only exactly the opposite.

How to identify the problem and solve the problem?

If it's Lanos. Open the hood, start the engine, connect the diagnostics. At idle, we take a bundle of wires in our hand or fingers (Fig. 1) and begin to “pull” it, then twisting, then raising it, then lowering it.

At the same time, observe the behavior of the car and the readings on the monitor. If changes occur during your manipulations, then we have localized the problem.

If this is Sens 1.3 (similar problems have not yet been observed at 1.4, but the fact takes place), you need to remove the decorative “plastic” and the plastic threshold in the passenger compartment, near the right foot of the passenger. We move the carpet away and see a bundle of wires that goes to the engine control unit. We begin to carry out the manipulations described above with Lanos 1.5. In Sense, the joints are localized closer to the anterior (Fig. 2).

If this is Lanos, then you must first remove the protective corrugation. There are only three connection points (Fig. 3).

We use solder combined with rosin in the coils. Leaning the soldering iron against the crimp and heating it, we lean the wire solder, which melts easily and flows into all pores. We isolate and collect (Fig. 6).

If it is Sens (Fig. 4), there can be from three to five junctions.

This problem sooner or later "climbs out" on all without exception Lanos. She also migrated to the Chevrolet Aveo. Although rare, it does happen. On Sens not so often, mostly on the first releases. We also met with this problem on VAZs. Conclusion? The soldering iron rocks!

General Information

Lanos is a rather unpretentious car, and with proper care, it will not cause any problems to its owner.

There are no sporting features in the character of the car, so it is the best choice for those whose task is to move normally from point A to point B, if necessary, together with their family and some small load.

What should be said, not related to machine breakdowns.

The metal from which the car body is made is relatively soft. Therefore, some care must be taken when handling the machine. In no case should you close the doors by the panel, the presence of a dent is guaranteed, it is better to open the door and slam it again. You should also not swing the car by the wings to check the shock absorbers and struts. Also, the body does not tolerate large hail, and everything like it, falling from above on the car.

Glasses are also soft. Do not wash bird droppings with a damp cloth in winter, scratches will remain for sure.

What should be done immediately after purchase?

1) It is necessary to change the oil in the gearbox. Suitable oils are SAE 75W, 75W-90, 75W-85, GL-4(GL4+). The best option is 100% synthetic oil. For manual transmissions 75/90, ARAL oil has proven itself very well, for any season.

Many car enthusiasts claim that ARAL is even better than, for example, SMX-O oil produced by CASTROL.

2) It is advisable to replace the antifreeze, since recently there have been cases of deterioration in its condition even after a slight run. TEXACO brand antifreeze, red, is recommended. The antifreeze that came with the machine must be drained and then the cooling system flushed.

3) If possible, disconnect the contacts of the throttle position sensors, temperature sensors, and contacts C104 and C105 located under the plastic casing, under the hood, in the far left corner (when viewed from the open hood). The contacts must be sprayed with WD-40 and plugged back in. This will provide the injector wiring contacts with a margin of safety.

4) Expand the gap at the end of the tube for draining condensate from the air conditioner evaporator, or cut the tube with a "cross", otherwise, if this tube is clogged, water can flow into the cabin, and in fairly large quantities. The air conditioner has a built-in "fool protection", but still, it is better not to turn on the air conditioner at high engine speeds.

About the engine and injector

The engine on Lanos is hardy and unpretentious. The sixteen-valve engine develops more power and has a longer engine life, but it is more picky about fuel and requires increased attention to the timing belt and roller. In these motors, as the most universal for Russian climatic zones, it is recommended to fill in 10W-30 or 5W-30 grease. The use of lubricants with a viscosity of zzW-50 or zzW-40 is not documented. Although the tolerances for the use of oils from Opel, in principle, include these oils in this classification. Therefore, due to the large number of tastes, preferences and other subjectivities, the responsibility for choosing the oil falls entirely on the owner of the car. The choice can be "facilitated" by hundreds of "knowledgeable motorists". For those who would like to follow the manufacturer's recommendations, we can recommend OPEL 5W-30 as an all-weather oil. For experienced people SELENIA Performer Multipower 5W-30 with GM approval. The second option is perhaps the best, albeit more expensive. It is best to once choose one type of oil for yourself and the car and use only it.

Spark plugs and high voltage wires. An important part of the engine, and lasts a long time. High-voltage wires on Lanos are always extremely reliable, with the exception of one situation: never and in no case should you disconnect high-voltage wires from candles when the engine is hot, or even warm, because at the same time, due to lack of experience, the wire contacts in the caps often break . The wire should always be removed very carefully and carefully, constantly twisting the cap a little in different directions. The resistance of serviceable high-voltage wires is 2.5-4.5 ohms for the shortest and for the longest. The spread of values can be 10-15%, but not 50%. The choice of candles is free. But still, we can recommend NZhK, CHAMPION or DENSO. However, these candles must have a cap that is not threaded at the end and cannot be unscrewed. Can upgrade spark plugs and wires do anything? Vryatli something tangible. If the gap in the candles corresponds to the norm of 0.8-1 mm, and the wiring is in good condition, then there will be no spark gap both during tuning and without it.

After the engine starts, there should be no trimming. Otherwise, read the section on spark plugs and high-voltage wires.

Is it worth warming up the engine? An unheated engine can be somewhat dull, for a myriad of reasons. It takes about a minute to warm up the engine, and until the temperature gauge reaches the first division, it is better not to increase the speed to 2000. The quality of the gasoline used most likely plays a significant role here.

Fuel consumption. Normal values are for urban conditions 8-8.5 liters per 100 kilometers, and outside the city 6-6.5 liters, when the car is fully loaded and driving at a speed of approximately 120 km / h. At the same time, the revolutions do not exceed 4000. In the winter season, fuel consumption should not increase by more than a liter, most often by 0.5 liters. If fuel consumption increases more, then something is wrong.

Nozzles. To clean the nozzles, it is better to use a special liquid; ultrasonic cleaning is not recommended.

It is recommended to clean the throttle space and the channel in which the crankcase gases are burned, the fitting for a 5 mm hose with an internal hole diameter of approximately 1.5 mm, located behind the idle speed controller. Due to a dirty fitting, small dips can occur when the throttle is ajar.

Brakes, gearbox, transmission

It is worth noting several features of the checkpoint.

At low speeds, first gear is hard to engage. This is due to the fact that the synchronizer for the first gear has a rather primitive design, and for the latter it is absent as such. If you use a thicker brand of oil, then this feature is exacerbated.

There is a howl of the gearbox in first and second gears during an increase in speed, in the 2200-2800 rpm range. The phenomenon is “normal” and there is no need to try to eliminate it, nothing will come of it, and you can easily mess things up. After a while, this howl becomes quieter, but does not disappear completely.

Discs and brake pads should only be purchased from an authorized dealer. First, it's safer. Secondly, it is easier in the sense of having a guarantee, there will be no particular problems if you have to replace something, for example, if vibrations and beats occur, which often happens when buying discs and pads in all sorts of markets and bazaars at seductively low prices.

After a while, the braking performance decreases. Most often this occurs because the driver gets used to the gas pedal and presses the brake also smoothly and carefully. If you feel that the brakes are not working effectively enough, then try applying the brake with your left foot. It is necessary to replace the brake fluid according to the schedule established by the documentation, at least at least once every three, and preferably every two years.

Suspension

The suspension that comes with the car breaks quite easily. The weak point is shock absorbers and rear springs, especially DELPHI, which is made in Poland. It is recommended to replace shock absorbers with gas-oil ones, produced by Kayaba, Bilstein, etc. The rear springs, if they are out of order, on the “kilen” springs, but at the same time, the depreciation at the back will become stiffer.

wheels

The choice of wheels is also made according to the personal preferences of each. The only recommendation is not to experiment with offset, and buy wheels that have an offset of at least 45.

Optics and lighting

Fogging headlights is a fairly common thing. It is corrected by replacing the headlight with a new one, naturally under warranty, or by sealing the headlight. During the operation of Lanos, it was noticed that this phenomenon disappears if the foam inserts that are in the ventilation rubber bands are removed from both chambers. As a lamp manufacturer, PHILIPS, GT-150 or 4000K lamps can be advised. The 4000K is whiter and the GT-150 is more powerful.

There are no problems with it, just watch the belts.

All the rest

A characteristic feature of cars in this price category are defects like "crickets in the cabin." The loudest "sing" hinges of door locks and rear seats. These shortcomings are remedied. Eliminating the rattle of the rear windows is a slightly more difficult task, but not unsolvable. Do not use fuel additives, the quality of the fuel will not improve, and the fuel level sensor in the tank will fail earlier. Brushes on the wipers, for the winter season, it is better to put winter ones accordingly. It would also be nice not to forget to pour winter fluid into the windshield washer system.

Not so long ago, Chevrolet Lanos occupied a rather serious place in its segment of the Russian automotive market. At one time he was the leader in the number of sales. Of course, like any other mass things, Lanos is distinguished by very conflicting assessments of car owners. Someone frankly admired him, but for someone he evoked negative emotions. After a while, Lanos has already completely “got used” to the number of models that have been released, but advertisements for its sale can still be seen in newspapers and on the Internet. Who is he, a potential buyer of Lanos? As a rule, this car attracts people who are interested in quality budget options.

It's not easy to classify. If we take into account its dimensions, then it is included in the vast sector B. The internal volume is enough to comfortably accommodate 4 people. In terms of quality and frills in design, it is difficult to surprise connoisseurs of aesthetics here, but the instrument panel looks quite modern.

A rather simple set can be confusing. The initial version of the S does not have airbags, power steering. A more advanced SE model boasts power steering, steering column adjustment. If you pay extra, then there will be air conditioning, airbag and ABS.

From the point of view of technical equipment, there is a more decent class. One and a half liter internal combustion engine for 8 valves is simple, but reliable. To accelerate to "hundreds" Lanos will need 12.8 seconds - which is a little more than the manufacturers say. Although, of course, this indicator is not the worst. The motor can be called elastic, but excessively loud. Drivers appreciate economical fuel consumption more, but you won’t save much in this car. The quiet rhythm allows Chevrolet Lanos to “eat” 6-7 liters per hundred, and in the urban cycle the figure will increase to 12 liters. It is quite obvious that many Lanos owners converted them to gas fuel. Moreover, their motors are perfectly adapted to work on gas.

Lanos steering will not provide exceptional precision and will not give a sense of the road, which will “backfire” on difficult maneuvers and when driving on bad roads.

Lanos owners should not save on suspension parts, otherwise it will not last long. Note that the situation with spare parts is quite good, because a number of elements come from other models. For example, the timing is the same with Asters and Corsas. Many suspension parts are also interchangeable.

Corrosion has become one of the main enemies of the Chevrolet Lanos. The weakest spot is the body. Of course, one should not expect anything else from the low-budget model of pre-retirement age. In addition to the body, the chassis, bolted connections, and exhaust system may begin to rust.

Despite the inexpensive price of Lanos, you should not think that you can neglect taking care of it. Lack of a minimum inspection may result in the need to replace the exhaust system, other components, oil seals and motor gaskets. And it threatens with serious expenses.

The main "sores" Chevrolet Lanos

Our car center "Guards" with great success has been working closely on repair work with Chevrolet Lanos for several years now. Experienced craftsmen have accumulated solid experience and can competently and skillfully identify all the weak points of Lanos.

1. "Lanos" of the Ukrainian assembly suffer from involuntary "hanging of revolutions".

Usually, diagnostics will not reveal a problem, and car service workers will simply shrug. The catch lies in the fact that factories often use “splicing” of wires using terminals, although it would be more expedient to install a single bundle. When the machine shakes, the contacts are interrupted, which causes floating failures of the sensors or the controller. To fix the problem, just solder the wiring. This is a rather tedious and long procedure, but its cost is quite inexpensive. After soldering, you can completely get rid of the “freezing speed” on Lanos.

2. Knocking in the steering rack area.

One of the typical "sores" Lanos. The source of the problem is the plastic slider of the steering rack, through which the steering rods are fastened. On this slider, the wheels knock when moving. This defect can be eliminated only by replacing the slider. If you drive in a gentle mode, then the crawler will last up to 20 thousand km. If you drive more intensively, then, of course, the period will decrease many times over.

3. The first gear does not turn on while driving.

Owners of Chevrolet Lanos often face a similar problem. It can be noted that this does not actually pose a threat of breakage. This is a design feature of the Lanos "mechanics" box. To shift gears smoothly, especially in winter, it's simple. The effect will be noticeable immediately.

4. Wheel bearings wear out quickly.

To fix the problem, you will need to change them. For prevention, it is necessary to control the backlash from time to time. Replacing the hub bearing on lanos is carried out in a short time. In the car service at Gvardeiskaya, 53, the replacement of the wheel bearing on the Lanos will be done promptly and at an affordable price.

Car experts refer to the Chevrolet Lanos as a car that you can rely on. But, of course, everything depends on quality service and spare parts. Chevrolet Lanos is not a dream car, but its advantage is simplicity, low cost, reliability and sufficient comfort for drivers and passengers. He will be an excellent companion at work and at home, but, of course, you should not forget that an iron car also needs care and maintenance. Then it will last a long time without serious complaints.
