About car

The Chevrolet Chevelle is a mid-size car manufactured by the Chevrolet Division of General Motors and produced in three generations between 1964 and 1977. The Chevelle was one of the most successful Chevrolet models. Chevelle nameplates adorned sedans, coupes, convertibles and even station wagons.

1964–1967

Chevrolet Chevelle 1964

Chevelle was created as the main competitor both in terms of size and concept. Enthusiasts were quick to point out that the Chevelle's 115-inch (2900mm) wheelbase was the same as the 1955-57 Chevy. A two-door hardtop coupe and convertible, a four-door sedan, and a four-door station wagon have been offered throughout its history.

Chevelle SS

The Chevelle SS represented the line and was produced from 1964. This package, in addition to the Super Sport nameplate, included 14-inch alloy wheels from Impala SS, leather interior, a choice of 2 gearboxes - a 4-speed manual from Muncie or a 2-speed CVT from Powerglide.

Z16SS396

Chevelle Z16 1965

Chevelles Z16 was produced in an extremely limited way, with only 1 batch of 200 copies. It was one of the rarest and most coveted cars ever made by Chevrolet. Many enthusiasts have tried to convert their '65 Chevelles, but have never succeeded due to a lack of unique parts and trim.

1966–1967

Chevelle 1966

In 1966, the world saw a complete facelift from Chevelle, which received sleek contours, a wide grille, a new bumper and curved side windows.

Chevelle SS 1967

In 1967, the taillights were changed, no other innovations were found. Front disc brakes were already available on all Chevelle models, as was a new dual brake cylinder along with a warning light in the cabin. Subsequently, this new equipment became the standard in safety, including a height-adjustable handlebar.

1968–1972

Chevelle 1968 Drag

In 1968 the Chevelle received new tapered front fenders with more rounded body lines. Chevrolet produced about 60,500,000 Super Sport coupes in a year and only 2,286 convertibles. Under the hood, the standard 325 l / s languished, and in the Turbo-Jet version, the 396 engine has all 375 “mares”.
During this period, it became fashionable to style the panel under a tree, and paint the vinyl in the cabin to match the body color, which Chevrolet did.

Chevelle SS 1969

In 1969, Chevelles were billed as "America's most popular midsize car." The changes were minor, although the designers revised the front of the car and the rear lights, which increased in size.

Engine choices in 1970 ranged from a standard 155 horsepower (116 kW) six-cylinder and 200 horsepower 307-cubic-inch V-8, to a pair of 350 V-8s and a pair of 402s (396).

That same year, the Chevelle SS 396 with the Turbo-Jet package included 350 horsepower (260 kW), custom suspension, a hooded hood, black grille and wide sport tires, although 375 bhp was also available.

1970 Chevelle SS Convertible with 454 engine

But the most powerful engines were the SS 454 with a volume of 7.4 liters, which had 450 l / s and 680 N * m of torque, overcame 1/4 mile in less than 13 s, at a speed at the finish line of 169-174 km / h; ZL1 and L88 with 427, both 430 hp. (320 kW) but actually producing over 500 hp (373 kW) in standard configuration.

In 1971, the changes again affected the decorative elements of the body - headlights, grille, bumper and twin taillights.
Like all models, Chevelle was also affected by the environmental crisis, and it is logical to imagine that the decrease in octane number, in fact, had a negative impact on the compression ratio and power in general.

Chevelle Wagon 1972

In 1972, the Super Sport trim could now be ordered with any V-8 engine, including the base 307. The Chevelle SS has a 270 hp top engine. (201 kW) in accordance with General Motors' decree that all engines were to be rated by net engine power.

Chevelle Yenko Super Cars 1972

Don Yenko developed his own line of Chevelle`s, along with his own Camaro`s and Nova`s, which became known as Yenko Super Cars. This tuning studio converted a standard Chevrolet 427 V8 engine into an L72 427 - which is 425 hp (317 kW).

1973–1977

Chevelle SS 1973

During this period, Chevelle sales totaled almost 1.7 million.
For most of 1973, Chevrolet was concerned with safety issues that did not bypass this model. And these are glass frames, roof reinforcement, front bumper and an unusually thin windshield frame, which also provided better visibility.

The chassis of the new Chevelle.

In the same year, 1973, a new chassis design was introduced, which provided both better road stability and comfort.

In 1974, Chevelle got a new grille, new bumpers and a new speed scale - each division corresponded to 5 miles per hour (8 km / h). Innovations also touched on the new GR70-15″ radial tires and spring suspension.

Chevelle 1975

For 1975, minor changes were made - bright headlight trim, rectangular taillights are made flush with the upper body. Engines ranged from a standard 250 six-cylinder, a 350 with a twin V-8 carburetor, as well as 400 and 454-cubic-inch V8 options, the latter rated at 235 horsepower.

There was also a modification of the Chevelle SE (Special Edition), which was available subject to the installation of front and rear spoilers and racing tires in size F60x15″. A special suspension was installed on it and marked with “SE” nameplates on the body.

Chevelle 1977

1978 was the sunset for Chevelle.

A real man's car, originally from the 70s. Simple, brutal and powerful. No high tech gimmicks. A classic V8 that makes all windows shake within a block. It's all about the legendary 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS.

The Chevrolet Chevel SS is an American muscle car produced from 1964 to 1977. Although this car was not as popular as the Dodge Challenger, it still took its place in the history of muscle cars of those years.

During 1970, only 4574 cars were “produced into the world”, which creates some difficulties for those who want to buy an authentic car, and also makes it more unique against the background of more eminent rivals.

The appearance of the two-door Chevelle SS coupe turned out to be very uncomplicated, but also attractive at the same time. From the front, two pairs of round headlights are looking at you, “enclosed” in metal frames. The “humped” hood hides a powerful power unit, the rectangular grille is divided into two parts by a large SS emblem, and the front bumper is made of a massive, one might even say a monolithic piece of iron. On the side, the car gets subtle chrome accents on the windows and wheel arches, which house 14-inch beefy alloy wheels. Small side mirrors and door handles look almost invisible. The back of the muscle car is slightly raised up. Rectangular headlights and a place for a license plate found their “shelter” in a wide metal frame. And at the very bottom there are two pipes of the bass exhaust system.

The interior of the 1970 Chevelle SS is pleasing to the eye with its black leather trim and shiny chrome accents like power window handles. The driver and front passenger are located on one solid sofa with head restraints. The driver's seat is equipped with a large-diameter steering wheel with a thin rim, behind which are three large analog gauges: a speedometer, a tachometer and a fuel gauge that constantly tends to zero.

Under the hood is a classic V8 with a volume of 7.4 liters. In those days, a similar engine produced 450 hp. power and 677 Nm of torque. This allowed the Chevelle SS to accelerate from standstill to hundreds in 6 seconds. The muscle car covered a quarter mile in 13.7 seconds and reached a top speed of 210 km/h. The engine was paired with a 3-speed automatic or 4-speed manual transmission.

The cost of a genuine car in the Russian market is on average 10,000,000 rubles.

Chevrolet has long been famous for its sports coupes. Vivid examples of this are the models and which have become cult for many. But there were few fervent, truly “charged” sedans in the history of the American brand. However, the Americans decided to fix this and brought to the market a representative SS with the makings of a sports car. How good is this car and does it have any drawbacks?

Chevrolet SS (full decoding of the abbreviation ̶ Super Sport) appeared on the market in 2013. The original donor for him was the Australian Holden Commodore VF.

This sedan has become the ideological successor to the model, which was designed on the B-body platform. However, unlike its predecessor, the novelty is designed on a rear-wheel drive platform (Zeta) and has a much more impressive power potential.

The dimensions of the model were also impressive. In particular, the body length of the Chevrolet SS is 5 meters 185 millimeters, and the width is 1 meter 898 millimeters. The wheelbase of the sedan is 2 meters 916 millimeters. Thus, this car can be considered a full-fledged representative of the E segment.

Chevrolet SS equipment includes:

  • Eight airbags.
  • Multimedia and entertainment system MyLink with a large touch screen and Internet access.
  • Rear view camera.
  • Bose premium audio system.
  • Dual zone climate control.
  • Park assist and more.

Specifications

Under the hood of the car there is a non-alternative power unit with a volume of 6.2 liters with a V-shaped layout of eight cylinders, as well as distributed injection of gasoline fuel.

The declared power is 415 horsepower, and the torque is 563 Newton meters. The motor works in conjunction with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

The foundation for the Chevrolet SS was the GM platform called Zeta. It provides rear-wheel drive transmission. In addition, the front suspension is designed according to the McPherson scheme, and the rear received a traditional multi-link configuration.

In order to optimize the weight distribution along the axes, the power plant was shifted inside the wheelbase. Also, it allowed to lower the center of mass, which favorably affected the handling of the American sports sedan.

restyling

In September 2015, Chevrolet presented an updated version of the SS. The new car differs from the pre-reform car in other LED running lights, other rims, as well as slightly redesigned bumpers. Inside, finishing materials have been improved, the multimedia and entertainment complex has been reprogrammed. Now it can support Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

The technical part of the model remained practically unchanged. Only the automatic transmission was recalibrated and the suspension was strengthened.

The minimum price of the Chevrolet SS 2016-2017 model year is 46 thousand 575 dollars.

User opinion

Demand for this sedan can not be called high. Nevertheless, it is quite possible to find reviews of the owners about it on the network. One of them will be shown below.

  • Excellent dynamics.
  • Chassis well tuned for driving.
  • Roomy interior.
  • Rigid suspension.
  • Not the best soundproofing.
  • Mediocre sounding standard audio system.

What else can be added? It should be remembered that frequent abrupt starts from a place are fraught with accelerated wear of the tires of the drive axle. In addition, rear-wheel drive requires some skills when driving on wet roads ̶ feed easily breaks into a skid.

Test Drive

male toy

The design of the Chevrolet SS is devoid of finesse. The body is uncomplicated and the eye is not particularly hooked on anything. And in general, the American sedan looks like a sort of village bully ̶ it is big, but at the same time it lacks relief muscles.

Nevertheless, sports notes in his appearance are still traced. It is worth highlighting the extended wheel arches, a low body kit, a rear diffuser with four exhaust pipes and a front bumper with a protruding splitter.

The main thing is comfort

From the sports paraphernalia inside the cabin, one can note the steering wheel with a truncated lower part and pronounced tides, a compact transmission lever (mechanical), as well as red instrument panel illumination. The latter is recessed into the wells and is perfectly readable under any conditions.

The focus of attention on the center console is drawn by the eight-inch color screen of the Mylink multimedia and entertainment complex. The system manages the functions of navigation, a rear view camera, and is also capable of reading files of popular video and audio formats.

The driver's seat has a sporty configuration, but this is not an uncompromising "bucket". It is comfortable to sit in thanks to a wide range of adjustments, and ventilation will add comfort on long trips.

On the sofa of the second row, three of us can easily accommodate. There is enough legroom even for riders whose height reaches 190 centimeters. However, in addition to the folding armrest, there are no other amenities for riders. The volume of the luggage compartment is 464 liters, which is not too much, given the dimensions of the car.

Brute force

Acceleration Chevrolet SS excites the blood. It may not be the fastest sedan in its class, but it delivers a lot of emotions when accelerating. The naturally aspirated engine growls pleasantly with every press of the accelerator pedal and exhibits excess traction in the mid-range zone, which causes the rear wheels to slip into slip.

As for the transmission, both manual and automatic transmissions are great for active driving. But the latter is much more convenient for urban use, while the “mechanics” strain with a tight clutch pedal.

The steering wheel requires some effort to turn. He is informative and very responsive. In corners, small rolls can be noted, however, with speed on an arc, you need to be more careful. The fact is that at the limit of the chassis, the feed breaks into a protracted skid, which only an experienced driver can repay. Otherwise, you cannot avoid losing control of the car.

Comfort is sacrificed for handling. You have to pay for the sensitive reactions of the steering wheel with a low ride even on small potholes. At the same time, strong shocks appear on large potholes, which force riders to look for supports in the cabin.

Chevrolet SS is not suitable for rationalists. This sports sedan is woven from contradictions, but nevertheless capable of delivering joy to the driver behind the wheel. Passengers will also be able to appreciate the roomy rear sofa, but they are unlikely to like the stiff suspension.

Photos of the new Chevrolet SS:

Initially, the car was designed to compete with the Ford Fairlane - the cars were similar in appearance and dimensions. Body styles offered throughout the production run were two-door hardtop coupes, convertibles, four-door sedans, and similar station wagons. Among the modifications, the SS version stood out, which was produced from the very beginning of Chevelle's history in 1964. It was positioned by the company as a muscle car. The usual equipment of the car then cost one and a half thousand dollars, and for an additional $162 the SS (Super Sport) kit was offered, which was distinguished by an updated appearance, SS emblems and 14-inch wheels with hubcaps. The interior of the Chevrolet Chevelle SS also had some changes: the interior was trimmed with vinyl, the shift lever was made of aluminum, four indicator lamps and a tachometer were also available. The modification was equipped with a V8 engine (it could not have been otherwise for a real muscle car) with a volume of 4.6 liters and a power of 220 hp.

Considering that the competitors of the Chevrolet Chevelle SS were such eminent muscle cars as the Pontiac GTO or the Oldsmobile Cutlass 442, in 1965 the engineers proposed a new 5.4-liter V8 with increased power. In 1966, the high-performance SS 396 was added to the Chevelle line. It was built on the basis of the old model, and under its hood hid real eight-cylinder monsters, developing from 325 hp. up to 375 hp The release of the modification ceased in 1968. Although it cannot be said that it has stopped - rather, we can assume that the version of the Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 from a separate model becomes one of the complete sets, the choice of which added $348 to the initial cost.

In 1970, the car underwent a slight restyling: outwardly, the cars became more “square” and acute-angled. At that time, the Chevrolet Chevelle SS had a special suspension, a power dome hood, a black grille, new bumpers and sports wheels. Thanks to the powerful V8s we mentioned earlier, the car was one of the fastest muscle cars around. When you press the gas pedal on the hood, special air intakes opened. 1970 also saw the production of two particularly agile versions with a 430 hp engine, although only those with a racing license could buy them.

In mid-February 2013, at the Daytina International Speedway in Florida, Chevrolet organized the official presentation of the first rear-wheel drive sports sedan called SS (Super Sport) since 1996, which is a converted version of the Australian four-door Holden Commodore VF and received a V8 gasoline engine from the Corvette supercar.

In September 2015, the car underwent a light “rejuvenation” procedure and received an upgraded exhaust system, and at the end of 2017 it may “leave the stage” at the same time as the original model.

With its appearance, the Chevrolet SS exudes power and aggression, but at the same time it looks like an ordinary family sedan with classic three-volume proportions. A pompous “face” with evil lighting, a double-cut grille and a powerful front “apron”, a dynamic silhouette with a long hood and “protruding” wheel arches, a muscular stern with beautiful lights and a “quartet” of exhaust pipes – outwardly, the car is really good and harmoniously composed.

In terms of external dimensions, the Chevrolet SS belongs to the full-size car segment and is 4966 mm long, 1897 mm wide and 1470 mm high. The wheelbase of the four-door occupies 2916 mm of the total length, and its “combat” weight varies from 1796 to 1803 kg, depending on the modification.

The interior of the American sedan is decorated in an attractive and modern style with a hint of sportiness, and finished as it should: high-quality plastics, metal inserts and genuine leather predominate inside.

The multifunctional “steering wheel” with a pronounced relief is flattened from below, the instrument cluster with two “wells” and a color display is elegant and informative, and the symmetrical center console with an 8-inch multimedia center screen and a stylish “remote control” of the climate system is beautiful and very presentable in appearance.

The front seats of the Chevrolet SS are equipped with magnificent sports seats with a developed side profile, integrated head restraints and electric adjustments in eight directions. On the second row of seats there is enough space for three passengers, but only two will be as comfortable as possible - the high floor tunnel is to blame.

The luggage compartment of a full-size sedan is small - its volume is only 464 liters. The rear sofa does not fold, but has only a hatch in the back, which allows you to transport long items.

Specifications. In the engine compartment of the Chevrolet SS, there is an atmospheric gasoline "eight" LS3, completely made of aluminum, with a V-configuration, a distributed fuel supply system and a 32-valve timing. The engine with a displacement of 6.2 liters (6162 cubic centimeters) generates a maximum of 415 horsepower at 5900 rpm and 563 Nm of torque at 4600 rpm.

It is mated with a 6-speed "mechanics" or a 6-speed hydromechanical "automatic" with the ability to shift gears through the steering column "petals", which direct the traction reserve in full to the wheels of the rear axle.

With automatic transmission, this full-size sedan shoots from a standstill to 96 km / h in 4.7 seconds, and its maximum capacity is 257 km / h (speed limited by an electronic “collar”).

In combined driving conditions, for every “hundred” of the way, the car consumes 14 liters of fuel, of which 16.8 liters are spent in urban mode, and 11.2 liters on the highway.

Structurally, the Chevrolet SS is distinguished by a classic scheme: the power plant is in the front (in the longitudinal direction), and the drive wheels are in the back. The sports sedan is based on the GM Zeta global platform, where all components and assemblies are assembled on an integral supporting structure made of steel, with auxiliary subframes. An independent suspension with MacPherson struts is installed on the front axle of the car, and a multi-link configuration is used in the rear (both there and there are transverse stabilizers and coil springs).
The rack and pinion steering system of the "American" is paired with an electric power steering with progressive characteristics. The “hot temper” of the motor is designed to pacify a powerful brake complex with ventilated front and rear Brembo “pancakes” (355 mm and 322 mm, respectively), as well as ABS, EBD and other electronic assistants.

Options and prices. Official sales of the Chevrolet SS are carried out only in the North American market, where the three-volume vehicle is in low but stable demand. In the US, for a “charged” car in 2016, they ask for a minimum of $46,575, and a very generous “filling” is offered for this money. In the "state" the sedan has: eight airbags, a multimedia system with an 8-inch screen and navigation, premium Bose "music" with nine speakers, an automatic parking system, a dual-zone "climate", 19-inch wheel disks and heated sports front seats , ventilation and electric adjustments. In addition, the basic package of the car includes a large number of modern "goodies" that are responsible for safety and comfort.
