Weaknesses and main disadvantages of Kia Spectra. How to buy a used Kia Spectra correctly What engine is on a Kia Spectra

30.09.2019

Good day to all!
A couple of weeks ago I sold my Kia Spectra and now I'm ready to write a review about it. I had a Kia with a 1.6 engine, two camshafts, 5MKPP, from the configuration 4 electric windows, power steering, 2 pillows, central locking, alarm, tinting, velor interior. Diamond silver color. Owned the car for a year. Before I went a girl and in all likelihood it was her first car. This was evidenced by several small dents and scratches on the body. But the price was low. We came with friends, looked, assessed the condition, listened, drove, everything was checked for performance - we take it. They took it in another city, a distance of about 300 km. The first impression on the road is simplicity and lightness. And of course warmth)) it was winter, it was -12 degrees outside, it was a little chilly. We got into the car on a soft velor, turned on the stove, warmed up. Immediately pleasant impression). I want to note that the stove works perfectly, it is warm even at the first and second speeds of the stove and does not buzz. But there is still one drawback in it - there is no tunnel to the rear passengers. While the front may already be hot, the back is not warm enough. Immediately on the road, the jamb of the previous mistress was carried. The driver's windshield wiper jumped, and the glass washer did not work. Fortunately, the weather was frosty, and the track is not dirty. We arrived without any hassle. Later, at home, I tightened the wiper nut, and it began to work as it should. But with the glass washer was not so simple. As it turned out, the previous hostess did not fill in the anti-freeze liquid in time, and a solid ice formed in the washer reservoir. I had to remove the engine boot in the front arch, remove the tank, all pipes and nozzles and warm the houses in the heat. The motor turned out to be alive - this is the most important thing. Put everything back together and it worked! Now I'll tell you about the car in general.
Before that, I had to drive my father's VAZ-2107, Moskvich-2141, I had a Mercedes W124 E230, Mercedes A160, so I will compare directly with these cars, although this is not entirely correct in some cases.
In general, the car is quite unpretentious, confidently holds the road, the suspension is soft, the steering is light and precise. The design is sympathetic, everything is done simply, without problems. Now about everything in order.
Body: As they say, the Russian assembly leaves much to be desired. When moving through steep potholes, the central pillar of the body, at the driver's door, cracks. It feels like it will break now)) My car is 2005, no corrosion was detected, but the iron is very thin. On the hood and trunk lid there are small indentations from the fingers, if you push it hard. Therefore, it is better to close the hood with a throw, and not press on it. If you suddenly push the car, it is also better not to hold on to the hood.
The doors are very light and close perfectly.
Suspension: Simple yet soft. Soft due to soft racks. It's Spectra's disease. When moving through steep speed bumps or sharp pits, it knocks out the front pillars. It is better to move at an angle, then it is not so strongly felt. My friend Spectra with native mileage of 30,000 km, he is the first owner, and also the same thing. So it's okay. Maybe, of course, something will change if you put the racks harder - I don’t know, I haven’t tried it. In general, the suspension is easy to repair and maintain. Ground clearance is normal. The lowest place is the engine protection and front bumper. The bumper did not hit, but the protection clung everywhere. I don’t know what I would do without it, a very necessary thing on our roads. Suspension in full good condition may make extraneous sounds. Did a running diagnostic, they said everything is fine. But there is still some light tapping. Apparently this is normal))
Engine and gearbox: there are no complaints about the engine, it works everywhere and always, it starts in any frost. Filled with Esso synthetics. I didn’t have to change the timing belt. I still had a native factory battery, which is 6 years old, and it started up even at minus 25 without problems. The consumption of 92 gasoline on the highway turned out to be 7 liters, and in the city 9-9.5 liters, in winter 10-10.5 liters. I think that for a 1.6 engine is a bit too much. Doesn't eat oil at all. The dynamics of acceleration to hundreds is somewhere in 13.5 seconds. For me personally, this is a very long time. Before that, I drove cars that had acceleration from 10-11 seconds to 100 km / h. The engine after 3000 rpm spins sluggishly and hard. There are no complaints about the transmission, all gears turn on clearly and effortlessly. Does not forgive fully not squeezed clutch. There is a very unpleasant rattle to the brain)) The only remark is that the gearshift lever is too long, at first it is not very convenient and unusual. My friend filed it right away when he bought the car.
Brakes: I had a complete set without ABS. The brakes work great. They begin to grab already at the beginning of pressing the brake pedal. You need to get used to them.
Comfort: Salon is really big. Behind there is enough space for oversized passengers. The trunk is roomy. The driver, when shifting gears, does not touch the passenger sitting next to him. The steering wheel rotates in place with one finger. Inside, soft pleasant velor. But that's probably all. Noise isolation is practically non-existent. On the road, a lot of noise comes from the wheels. Another feeling that between the Torpedo and the engine Shumka is completely absent. Engine noise becomes unbearable after 3000 rpm. When they looked at the car before buying, when I gasped at idle, it seemed to me that the resonator was broken. I ask friends on the street if the muffler or the resonator growls, they say no, everything is fine)) Strange as it may seem, the sound insulation on the Spectra is no better than that of the VAZ-2109. Another drawback is cheap creaky plastic. Crickets live everywhere. Behind in the body rack when driving there was some kind of strong rumble. The car was not broken, the paint was native, the expert looked. Here I repeat once again, the Russian assembly leaves much to be desired))
Prices and spare parts: Spare parts are full in milestone stores, both native and various substitutes. But prices are a different story. There are native spare parts in general for a penny. For example, the stabilizer bar of the front suspension is 200 rubles per piece, the rubber bands of the front stabilizer are 50 rubles per piece. My father bought the same ones for the VAZ-2107, they cost 49 rubles / piece from him)) Front brake pads 700 rubles, rear 400 rubles. But I want to note the quality of Korean spare parts no. After a month, the front pads began to creak terribly, I had to change it again, I bought my own branded Hyundai / Kia for 1400 rubles. I dug in a radiator, bought a Korean one for 2000 rubles, didn’t even drive a week before it exploded with me. The place of the gap was just in the factory seam. Then I had to buy another radiator for 3600 rubles + of course re-replacement of antifreeze. For comparison, on a Mercedes W124, the radiator cost 4000 rubles. The difference is not big. What can I say about this, if you put a Korean spare part, then you will change it again soon. It is better to put German or Japanese substitutes. But then the content of the Korean will not seem cheap to you.
Here is a list of costs for Kia Spectra for 1 year:
- fuses 80 rubles
- front suspension stabilizer rubber bands 2pcs x 50 rubles
- stabilizer bar front suspension 2pcs x 200 rubles
-timing belt 500 rubles (did not have to be changed, otherwise the replacement costs 4000 rubles)
-timing belt rollers 2pcs x 125 rubles
-replacement of rubber bands and stabilizer struts 600 rubles
- engine oil Esso 5w40 950 rubles
- oil filter 150 rubles
-front pads Kashivama 750 rubles
-Kashivama rear pads 400 rubles
-front pads Hyundai / Kia 1400 rubles (re-replacement, because the old ones began to creak)
-replacement pads 400 rubles
-repair of the handbrake 200 rubles
- running gear diagnostics 250 rub
-radiator + antifreeze 2500 rubles
-radiator + antifreeze (replacement) 3600 + 500 rubles
- installation of a radiator to maintain the warranty at a certified service station 1000 rubles
- BOSH wiper blades 400 rub
- anti-freeze 200 rubles
TOTAL: 14630 rubles.
If I hadn’t changed everything twice, but would have installed non-Korean spare parts right away, this amount would have been less. But who knew. In addition, painting came out to me in 15450 rubles. Painted 2 front fenders, front bumper and tailgate bottom. Corrected shoals after the first owner, or rather the hostess.
Now I want to note all the shortcomings that I noticed in this car.
Flaws:
- crickets in the front
- rear upholstery noise
- complete lack of sound insulation
- long shift lever
- there are no full-fledged door handles, instead of them there are simple recesses
- body cracking when driving over bumps
- the front pillars are knocked out when moving through speed bumps
- flimsy connections of contacts in the wiring
- build quality on the "3" -chku
- there are no protective visors on the sides of the windshield, so after spraying on the glass from the windshield washers while driving, all the water flows onto the side windows. And if you go with an open window, you are provided with a fountain in the salon! This is a very serious shortcoming.
- with intensive rotation of the steering wheel with a sharp stop at the extreme point, a strong and unpleasant knock is heard
- high consumption for such an engine
- the hood opened several times while driving. It did not open at all, but remained on the latch.
- the signal of the open driver's door is very strong
- open side windows begin to rattle

Summing up, I want to say that the Kia Spectra car is generally not bad, quite practical, but there are a lot of imperfections. The car is easy to use and drive. Relatively inexpensive to maintain. The impression and feeling is better than the Russian auto industry, but not by much. Decent car for those who just drive. If you take a car to enjoy comfort or emphasize status, then you will have to look for something else. Take those who have traveled before on domestic cars. If you had a more serious car, you will disappoint yourself.

Pros:
Cheap spare parts
Inexpensive service
Cute design

Minuses:
Boring Salon
High fuel consumption for the 1.6 engine
Sluggish dynamics
Lots of small bugs

Car buyers fall into two categories. Some choose a car on an emotional level - style is important for them, the history of the brand, in the end, prestige, if the position obliges. Others approach the choice of a four-wheeled friend solely from a utilitarian point of view, wanting to get the maximum benefit in exchange for a reasonable amount of banknotes. It was for them that Kia released the Spectra car at one time.

A cheap foreign car with an "automatic" is the first thing that comes to mind when you see the squat silhouette of a "Korean". There is also a manual transmission option, but more on that below.

Story

In very, very short terms, the car that we know as the Spectra is the second generation of the Kia Cerato, which has a motor created in collaboration with Mazda and has nothing to do with Hyundai models. And all because Hyundai bought Kia in 1998, and the second generation Cerato began to be produced in 1997.

The predecessor of our hero, the first generation Kia Spectra sedan, was released in South Korea in 1992. In the Korean original, the car was called Sephia, and in foreign markets the car received a second name - Mentor. In the first year, more than 100,000 vehicles were sold in the domestic market. Believing in success, in 1993, Kia for the first time begins to conquer the North American market, and it is with this model. The car enters US car dealerships with a 1.8-liter engine manufactured under license from Mazda. In 1995, Kia makes the Spectra a facelift for the American consumer, changing the grille and head optics.

A year earlier (since 1994) Sephia acquires a hatchback modification. From the same year, the car was exported to Europe and began a competitive battle with the Ford Escort and Opel Astra.

Sales of the first generation continued until 1997, when the second generation of Spectra entered the conveyor. The second generation completely changed the look of the sedan and hatchback (Shuma). In addition, the engine was updated - 1.8 DOHC was already Kia's own development (not without the help of Mazda).

The model successfully lived until the beginning of the new century and again changed its name in the United States. For marketing reasons, the liftback was given the name Spectra, "shedding light over all of North America" (from the English Spectrum, the second plural of Spectra).

The car sold quite successfully. Contributed to this rich equipment and affordable price. Kia made a bet on safety and did not lose. Spectra could already be bought with six airbags and disc brakes on all wheels. In total, three configurations were offered - basic under the S index, extended GS and top-end GSX.

In 2003, Kia launches the third generation under the Cerato / Forte nameplate, while in some foreign markets the second generation was still produced until 2004.

But what about in Russia? Traditionally, at that time, we got not the latest reincarnation. In 2005, "IzhAvto" takes on the industrial assembly of the second generation Spectra in the "sedan" body. In 2008, the car engine is brought to Euro-3 standards. 2011 was the last year of Spectra's production in Russia.

Offers on the market

A potential buyer will be deprived of the pangs of choice, because the Russian version was produced only in the sedan body, and with only one gasoline engine.

The whole choice comes down to finding an option with the desired gearbox - manual or automatic. In fairness, it should be said that the American versions of different generations were brought to our market by the overseas wind, but their number goes to pieces.

The price range for the Spectra will please you more: depending on the year of issue, from 175 to 350 thousand rubles, - for any wallet.

Year Price Max/Min, thousand rubles Average price, thousand rubles. Mileage range, thousand km Mileage average, thousand km
2005 170 – 260 215 70 - 140 105
2006 168 – 270 215 41 - 280 160,5
2007 170 – 300 235 42 - 205 123,5
2008 165 – 350 232,5 28 - 216 122
2009 200 – 350 275 19 - 150 84,5
2010 260 – 305 280,5 38 - 82 60
2011 290 – 350 320 25 - 58 41,5

It should be understood that the declared price for a car is the one at which it is on the market; the real price at which it eventually leaves is always lower in practice, at least by 2-3%. In the case of reasonable bargaining, you can achieve a discount of up to 5%.

The table shows that for the first 4 years of production, the lower bar changes slightly, as well as the upper bar for the last 4 years. Why? In the first case, the technical condition of the car plays a role, in the second - a small number of offers of a certain year of manufacture. If there are few offers of 2011 on the market, then 2010 goes at the price of 2011, and so on. By the way, the volume of output since 2009 has been gradually decreasing by 2011, which is not surprising. Due to the crisis at that time, the IzhAvto plant was already in pre-bankruptcy convulsions.

It is easy to find a car with an "automatic", up to a quarter of the offers (24%) falls on it.

Engine

The Russian version of Spectra was produced only with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 101.5 hp. and is designed for 95th gasoline. Only the American version is more powerful - 1.8 l, 126 hp, but only with an "automatic". According to the dealer’s regulations, maintenance is carried out at intervals of every 15 thousand km, with a mandatory change of engine oil and filter. Every 45 thousand km we change the timing belt, every 30 thousand km - spark plugs.
The engine is generally reliable - Japanese roots are felt. Single incidents and breakdowns happened to the owners of new cars on runs up to 10 thousand km, but this is more a consequence of the assembly than a design flaw. One has only to pay attention to the condition of the timing belt and change it in advance. A broken belt leads to bending of the valves, and there are 16 of them, 4 per cylinder.

A new engine can be found for 70 thousand rubles, but this information is more for reference, it is unlikely that you will ever have to deal with this.

According to the reviews of the owners, on 99 out of 100 cars, a tapping (rattling) is heard during a cold start, which disappears with the engine warming up and no longer manifests itself. In most cases, the use of synthetic oil and periodic monitoring of its level, inspection of the engine for lubricant leakage helps.

If the engine suddenly starts to work unevenly, "walk" in speed and then "recover", then suddenly "troit", do not rush to order a new one. Such cases are just not uncommon on runs closer to 90-100 thousand km. The spark on one of the cylinders, or rather, the ignition coil, is to blame for this. Here one coil goes to two cylinders.

But what this engine paired with a gearbox lacks is dynamics. And if a bunch with a manual transmission allows you to accelerate the car to 100 km / h in 12.6 s. (which is close to the level of most budget foreign cars), then with automatic transmission the car will reach this milestone in 16 seconds. It is already possible to compete here only with a bus.

Transmission

There are certain questions about the reliability of the automatic transmission (factory index F4AEL-K). On the one hand, the box also has Japanese roots, but is somewhat modified in the direction of simplification. On the other hand, evil tongues claim that the assembly is Chinese, although it was delivered to the factory from Korea. According to the Kia regulations, the automatic transmission on the Spectra is considered maintenance-free - the dealer only checks the oil level for maintenance. But we know that in our conditions it is better to monitor the quality of the oil in the "machine" and change it if necessary.

First of all, you need to pay attention to oil smudges. An insufficient level can cause overheating and noise in the box and, as a result, leads to the destruction of the clutch mechanisms and bearings. Overheating can be identified by the characteristic black color of the oil with a burning smell. It can be a honey spoon that dealers and workshops have already got their hands on repairing these boxes. The restored automatic transmission is estimated by sellers along with a replacement at 30-40 thousand rubles.

The smoothness of the automatic transmission corresponds to the technological age of its development. There are frequent jerks when switching from 1st to 2nd gear (solenoid valves stick) and regassing when switching from 3rd to 4th gear ("automatic" 4-speed). The latter is "treated" by replacing the firmware in the electronic control unit.

A manual box (5 steps) is devoid of these shortcomings, but the owners have complaints about the clarity of gear shifting and the long strokes of the gearshift lever. By 50 thousand km, oil may begin to leak through the O-ring of the gear selection rod. The clutch disc "dies" (on average) to 70 thousand km.

Suspension

The classic scheme: independent MacPherson strut front, independent rear, multi-link, with shock absorber struts and a transverse stabilizer. She does not cause any particular complaints. Ball bearings hold up to 130-150 thousand km and make themselves felt with a knock due to the presence of play. On the recommendation of the manufacturer, the ball joint changes in assembly with the lever, however, those who want to save money can order only the support itself in the store.

The suspension is soft and comfortable, some car owners prefer stiffer and put non-original springs and shock absorbers. The "native" suspension is prone to breakdown, but if the ride is too soft and the car falls in corners, then this is a reason to evaluate the working condition of the shock absorbers. If the car starts to float on a straight course, look at the stabilizer bushings.

By 90-100 thousand km, wheel bearings begin to buzz in almost all cars of the model. They change in assembly with the hub. In the presence of a garage and free time, craftsmen knock out old bearings and hammer in new ones.

The front brakes are disc, the rear is more often drum, although versions with ABS also have discs at the rear. The pad resource is standard. 30-40 thousand km for disk and up to 100 thousand km for drum. There are no complaints about the operation of the brake system, it provides adequate and predictable deceleration.

The disadvantages of the suspension include extremely low ground clearance - 154 cm, and even less with installed engine protection and a full load. Notice the long front overhang. The long hood of the sedan, together with a small ground clearance, sharply reduces the geometric cross-country ability of the car. It is necessary to park "face" to the curb, storm the railway tracks and ramps with a margin.

Body and interior

The factory anti-corrosion treatment of the Spectra body included a 4-fold cataphoresis bath (on both sides), colloquially "galvanized". The factory warranty against through "wormholes" was 100 thousand km. Therefore, you will not find frankly rusty specimens, of course, if the car has not been “attached” to an obstacle before. The iron of the body does not have excessive thickness, so it does not like it when any significant effort is applied to it. Softer, even softer...

Most of the complaints from car owners are caused by the soundproofing of the cabin, the engine is especially annoyed at high speeds, when it becomes uncomfortable to communicate.

The basic configuration already has a central lock, all power windows, a full-size spare tire, a folding rear sofa (60/40 ratio), power steering, two frontal airbags. Spectra was supplied in 5 trim levels. All versions (except the base one) have air conditioning, and the "automatic" box was available only in the two top versions "Premium" and "Lux".

Trunk volume of 410 liters is quite good for a compact sedan, and it can be increased by folding the back of the rear sofa. There are cases when access to useful liters may not be possible due to a stuck trunk lock or a loose remote opening cable from the passenger compartment. This is more of an embarrassment than a malfunction, and after adjustment the problem disappears.

There are no complaints about the cabin. Simple and angry. Inexpensive plastic with a budget "rag". The layout of the seats allows you to comfortably accommodate a fairly large passenger in any row. True, not all drivers can find a good driving position for themselves, despite the vertical adjustment of the steering column. In the course are experiments with the inclination of the basic installation of the driver's seat through spacers.

electrical equipment

Electrician does not cause serious claims. As we wrote above, over time, it may be necessary to replace the ignition coils. Sometimes owners complain about the insufficient luminous flux of the dipped headlights. In the first thousand runs, there were cases of horn failure.

Cost of service / maintenance

Initially, a 3-year warranty (or 100 thousand km) was provided for the car, so you will no longer find warranty options, and the dealer has no direct reason to service it.

The cost of some operations on specialized but unofficial services

Initially, the Kia Spectra car was equipped with engines manufactured under license from Mazda. However, the manufacturer rather quickly moved away from this practice and developed its own engine - a four-cylinder gasoline unit, which became the first in the Spectra line. In Russia, the car is produced only in a modification with a 1.6 engine (very rarely - in other versions), so in the article we will consider the features of this particular engine.

The KIA S6D engine is a 16-valve four-cylinder injection engine using a special DOHC gas distribution system. Two camshafts are responsible for opening and closing the valves. The cylinder head is made of aluminum; with the block itself is hermetically fastened with bolts.

ATTENTION! Found a completely simple way to reduce fuel consumption! Don't believe? An auto mechanic with 15 years of experience also did not believe until he tried it. And now he saves 35,000 rubles a year on gasoline!

A tribute to Mazda's predecessors is the use of hydraulic lifters in new engines. This feature complicates the design, but at the same time eliminates the need to adjust the valves every 100,000 km. The cylinder block is made of cast iron - this allows you to bore the cylinders during overhaul.

The engine number can be viewed on the cylinder block platform, which is located in front of the clutch housing.

The cooling system, equipped with a special expansion tank, is completely sealed. The combustion chamber cools down due to the fact that coolant circulates through special channels. The device includes a shell for cooling in the combustion chambers, around the cylinders and in the gas channels. The movement of the coolant is provided by a centrifugal water pump.

The engine works like this:

  1. the rotation of the camshafts is carried out from the crankshaft by means of a reinforced toothed belt;
  2. camshafts, acting through hydraulic lifters, set pusher valves in motion.

To reduce the piston pressure on the cylinder walls, the developers shifted the axis of the hole.

Oil is supplied to the five-bearing crankshaft through special drillings. Loaded parts are lubricated under pressure, the rest - in the process of spraying oil flowing from the gaps. The pressure in the lubrication system is supplied by a gear oil pump installed in the front of the cylinder block. At the same time, the ventilation system used improves the quality characteristics of the seals and reduces the emission of toxic substances into the atmosphere.

The fuel system includes a fuel module located in the fuel tank. In addition, it uses a throttle assembly, a fuel fine filter, a fuel line, injectors, air filters and a pressure regulator. The distributed injection system operates under the control of a special controller; does not require maintenance or adjustment during operation.

Advantages and weaknesses

The Kia Spectra engine, in addition to good performance, is known for its reliability and the absence of problems during its service life. The motor also features a number of features that can interest buyers, as well as those who own the Kia Spectra.

The design of the engine cannot be called new, but it is still considered quite modern. After all, some auto manufacturers still offer complete sets of cars with a much more outdated design - for example, eight-valve modifications. On the other hand, Spectra's power units do not use such popular technologies as the variable valve timing and injection system, which give a power increase of 30-40 horsepower (used on Hyundai, Ford and others).

To transmit torque, a timing belt (timing) is provided. This detail requires some attention: it is recommended to replace the belt every 60,000 kilometers. In the event of a broken belt, the valves fail and a major overhaul is required to replace them.

When compared with cars with the latest injection systems (FSI, GDI), Kia Spectra digests 92nd gasoline well. Such fuel does not cause any particular problems, although the Check Engine may catch fire. After the normalization of the composition of gasoline, the indicator usually goes out. In this regard, a lot of controversy arises regarding the resource of the motor.

Motorists remember that the roots of the engine go back to Japanese counterparts. However, in reality, the new 1.6-liter unit has little in common with its Japanese predecessors. But the design itself and the quality of workmanship still remained at a high level. Therefore, you can meet cars with a range of 200-400 thousand kilometers.

Of the shortcomings and malfunctions, it is worth noting the following:

  • frequent fire of the Check Engine indicator due to electrical breakdowns;
  • broken timing belt;
  • floating revolutions requiring replacement of candles;
  • overheating due to thermostat malfunctions;
  • increased oil consumption in case of untimely replacement of piston rings;
  • failure of sensors to control the operation of the engine.

Most of the breakdowns are not related to design flaws. Such malfunctions can be prevented by the timely replacement of parts that are at risk, as well as regular maintenance.

Over the ten years of operation, a large number of positive reviews have accumulated about the engines. Many of them confirm the information that, with proper maintenance, the motor is able to cover several hundred thousand kilometers without any problems for its owner.

Where else is the S6D engine installed

S6D engines are installed not only on the Korean Kia Spectra, they are also installed on Hyundai cars. At the same time, the use of these power units is not limited only to Korean manufacturers - the S6D engine is installed on both Chinese and Japanese cars. Motors are popular due to the simplicity of design, as well as the possibility of do-it-yourself maintenance.

Now you know why the S6D engine is in high demand in Russia (as well as abroad) - we examined its technical characteristics, advantages, as well as weaknesses. If we talk in general about the Kia Spectra, then this is an unpretentious vehicle with a soft suspension and fairly precise steering; the car holds the road with the confidence of a "professional". The design of most car owners also evokes sympathy - everything is simple and without unnecessary decorations in it.

Gasoline engine Kia Spectra 1.6 l. with a capacity of 101 horsepower, this is a 4-cylinder gasoline unit with a cast-iron block and a 16-valve timing mechanism. The motor turned out to be extremely successful and practically does not cause problems to its owners. Change the timing belt in time (because valve bend break), oil and filter. And you can drive for quite a long time without any problems at all. Some taxi drivers can boast of running more than 400 thousand kilometers!

Engine device Kia Spectra 1.6 l.

Engine Kia Spectra 1.6 liters has the factory designation S6D. This is an in-line 4-cylinder, 16-valve engine with an overhead camshaft arrangement. The cylinder block is cast iron, the block head is made of aluminum alloy and has hydraulic lifters. The engine cylinder block is a single casting that forms the cylinders, the cooling jacket and the oil line channels. The engine cylinders are numbered from the crankshaft pulley. The block is made of special high-strength cast iron, the cylinders are bored directly in the body of the block.

The engine power supply system consists of a fuel module installed in the fuel tank, a throttle assembly, a fine fuel filter, a fuel pressure regulator, injectors, fuel lines and an air filter.

The ignition system is microprocessor controlled by a controller (electronic control unit). The controller also controls the multiport fuel injection system. The ignition system during operation does not require maintenance and adjustment.

Cylinder head of the engine Kia Spectra 1.6 l.

Spectra cylinder head, made of aluminum alloy, common to all engine cylinders. In the lower part of the cylinder head, channels are cast through which the liquid circulates, which cools the combustion chambers. Seats and valve guides are pressed into the head. The intake and exhaust valves have one spring each, fixed through the plate with two crackers. The engine with two five-bearing camshafts has four valves for each cylinder: two intake and two exhaust. The valve drive is carried out from camshafts, which directly act on the valves through hydraulic compensators, which simultaneously perform the function of pushers. The intake and exhaust camshafts are driven from the engine crankshaft by a reinforced toothed belt. Candles are rotated vertically, for which there are special wells in the head of the block.

Timing drive of the Kia Spectra engine

Timing belt drive. Actually, at first glance, there should not be any problems with the replacement. We bring to your attention timing diagram Kia Spectra(above in the photo). Pay attention to all labels. They must be set exactly as in the picture and nothing else (if you mix up the letters on the pulleys, you won’t be able to put them correctly). To check the correctness of the installation, count the number of teeth on the belt between the camshaft pulleys should be exactly 17. Quite often, the belt is installed incorrectly, then there are 16 of these teeth, which means that the motor will no longer show normal operation. Experienced craftsmen, before removing the belt, put a special mandrel that does not allow the camshaft pulleys to rotate (slightly shift) between themselves. Such mandrels can now be purchased at any major parts store. Without a mandrel, the pulleys will just shift. The retainer for the camshaft pulleys can be made from improvised materials, see the photo below.

Another feature of the Spectra motor is the location of the water pump. Certainly pump does not rotate due to the timing belt, as on some other machines, however, when replacing the water pump, the timing belt will have to be removed. Without this, it is impossible to get close to the pump housing.

Structurally, this motor is very similar to the Mazda 323 power unit. However, it has undergone serious modifications by Korean engineers. For example, on ancient Mazda 323 engines, you can find an ignition system using a distributor. Naturally, there is no distributor on the Spectrum, there are coils supplying a spark to the candles, using data from the crankshaft position sensor.

Good day, dear motorists. My story will not be of interest to owners of premium cars, as well as those who are prejudiced against Korean cars. For those who are thinking about moving from class B to a full-fledged class C, information about the Kia Spectra will come in handy. My car was bought in July 2007 for 385,000 rubles. Additionally, I installed engine crankcase protection, an alarm (including autonomous), better music, expensive tinting, bought two sets of cast wheels and good tires (summer - 15 "on Yokohama S-Drive 195/55 / R15 and winter Bridgestone Blizzak 185/65/R14), as Amtel Planet stock tires are very noisy and uncomfortable.

In the showroom they said that it is not necessary to do anticorrosive, because. the body undergoes anti-corrosion treatment and is not subject to corrosion if there is no intervention (welding, straightening, etc.). Looking ahead, I’ll say that the officials did not deceive and after three years of operation there was not a single hint of rust on the car, although chips and 2-3 dents were present, you can’t do without it. This is probably strange, especially after the wild criticism of the paintwork of Korean cars. By the way, the assembly was Russian (Izhevsk). I did not install the protection of the rear wheel arches (the protection of the front arches comes from the factory). This did not contribute to noise isolation, but I knew that I was not buying a Mercedes.

After a careful break-in, the car drove more cheerfully. I refuel only at proven gas stations, after 1 year of operation at each gas station, on the advice of reputable friends, I began to add a special additive to the gas tank. After that, the engine power increased a little more. The low ground clearance and the softness of the suspension made it necessary to be careful not only on bad roads, but also on tracks with a crushed undulating profile. I quickly got used to it. I accelerated the car on a good road up to 180 km per hour, but this is not its speed, the engine sound becomes terrible and the tachometer shows 6500 rpm. The engine is generally noisy, but very reliable (the prototype is the Mazda 323 engine). The interservice mileage is 15,000 km, but I did it 10,000 km and the engine never ate oil. I immediately left the guarantee due to inadequate prices and did not regret it, because. for three years, my swallow did not have a single failure. The entire repair for three years is the replacement of rubber bushings of the stabilizer and stabilizer struts, the issue price is 2 kopecks.

The car is spacious in the back, the family was in a panic when I decided to sell it. But such is life. Swallow in perfect condition pleases another owner, and I paid an advance for the Nissan Teana 2.5 V and now I have to wait 1.5 months. And this is no longer a swallow, but a black reptile. Living conditions have changed and before my choice, I test-drive Teanu 2.5 V6 and her classmates (I will not name out of political correctness).

Life goes on, and I remember my budget foreign car with nostalgia.
