When Buick unveiled the Avenir concept at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, most enthusiasts started fantasizing about the flagship sedan. Such a move would finally give the brand a car for the luxury market. On the other hand, we knew there was a good chance that the Avenir would remain just a concept, and Buick's latest announcement about the next generation of the new 2017 LaCrosse confirms these words.
However, there is some good news. LaCrosse, which made its public debut in the City of Angels, has a sporty design inspired by the Avenir concept model. The front fascia is borrowed from the concept car, and the company said the styling will be adopted by all of the firm's vehicles by 2018. That doesn't necessarily mean that Buick wasn't considering a full-size sedan, but even if it wasn't, the new design language should be exciting.
The release of LaCrosse shattered expectations that we were waiting for a full-fledged production Avenir. However, the expressive design of the model represents a breakthrough for the company and emphasizes progressiveness in all new Buick models.
Sedan exterior
The first thing that catches your eye when looking at the new 2017 Buick LaCrosse is the sporty, gorgeous Avenir design front grille. A sleeker and sportier Waterfall grille dramatically changes the look of the sedan. At first glance, the car is identical to the Avenir, but the Lacrosse's grille is actually slightly different.
The horizontal plating sits a little lower, while the rim above the emblem is thicker. The V-shaped bottom is smoother and the limbs are sharper. The previous model had monochrome guards, on the new car they are painted in red, silver and blue. Buick used a similar design in the 1960s and 1980s.
The sedan has also received a new sculpted hood as well as a pair of new headlights that look very similar to the Avenir. They are actually slimmer and longer, giving the LaCrosse a more aggressive look. Down below, you'll see a revised bumper with a wide but thin air intake with a chrome trim that's visible from one side to the other.
The rear panel is a significant departure from the previous model. It boasts a more refined and modern look. The stern is longer and the trunk lid has a sportier design, eschewing the previous model's thick chrome trim. The chrome inserts, however, have been retained around the taillights, which are smaller and extend towards the trunk lid.
Stretching the wheelbase by 6.8 centimeters gives the sedan a new profile that makes it look longer and sleeker (despite being only an inch and a half longer than its predecessor). The roofline sits 1.6 centimeters lower, which contributes to the appearance of sportiness.
In the configuration of the new Buick LaCrosse 2017 are standard:
- HID lights;

- LED taillights;
- active grid shutters;
- and 18-inch wheels;

The LaCrosse also received a redesigned interior, with some Avenir-inspired features. The instrument panel is sleeker and more luxurious with a mix of horizontal and sinuous lines, wood accents on the passenger side, and subtle chrome trim. Probably the most impressive feature is the floating center console, which is mostly covered in wood and leather. The console is wide and tall, similar to those we've seen in much larger sedans.
With a redesigned dashboard, there is also a new center console. Amenities mimic the Avenir in many ways, but the concept car had a larger screen mounted in a trapezoidal chrome frame, the Lacrosse has the same touchscreen monitor and a pair of A/C vents mounted inside the same element. Various buttons and knobs fill the space between the screen and shift controls, but the area is less cluttered compared to the previous model.
The new sporty interior has paid more attention to detail and includes softer materials on almost every surface. Depending on trim level, the Lacrosse comes with French stitching on the seats and dashboard, aluminum sills and wood trim. There are three types of interior finishes available:
- jet black;
- Dark Atmosphere and Shale
- Jet Black and Brandy.
Features that are new or upgraded from the previous sedan include Moon White ambient lighting, eight-way adjustable heated and ventilated front seats, and a new massage function. Also included in the 2017 Buick LaCrosse package are perforated leather seating, a power-tilt heated steering wheel with telescoping steering column, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a Bose premium audio system.
Buick has also improved the sedan's roominess and storage space. Legroom has increased in the rear, access to the rear seats has become easier due to new doors that open wider. The trunk offers about seven percent more space than the current model and has been set up to accommodate four golf bags.
LaCrosse is packed with high quality technology features. The latest edition of IntelliLink features a new eight-inch touchscreen that has been designed to display phone features that users would like to see while driving. This can be done via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well. Features allow the driver to select a smartphone app via a touchscreen interface. Many functions can be controlled by voice commands via the buttons on the steering wheel. The Lacrosse also has a quieter cabin thanks to standard active noise cancellation and other upgrades. The sedan received a new acoustically laminated windshield and front side windows, triple-lock doors, and improved body sealing against road noise. In addition, wipers sit under the hood to reduce wind noise.
The car comes with ten standard airbags, including two kneebags for front passengers. Active safety features include Pedestrian Detection Braking, Lane Keeping Assist, Auto Brake, Forward Collision Warning and Rear View Mirror Blind Spot Alerts. The sedan is also equipped with an automatic parking system, which helps the driver to park the vehicle in a parallel and perpendicular position using automatic steering. Also available is adaptive cruise control and a rearview camera.
Specifications
Under the hood of the new 2017 Buick LaCrosse is a 3.6-liter V-6. Although it is similar to last year's engine in terms of displacement and cylinder configuration, the block is actually new and comes from the Cadillac XT5 crossover. The V-6 cranks out 305 horsepower, making it only one horsepower more powerful than its predecessor.
There's no need to be disappointed, as the sedan is 136 kilograms lighter than the outgoing model, and it also benefits from a 15 percent increase in torsional stiffness. As a result, the new sedan should be faster and boast significantly better fuel efficiency.
Mated to a new eight-speed automatic transmission, the V-6 uses direct injection and includes Active Fuel Management (Buick's cylinder deactivation system) and engine stop and start system.
Buick no longer offers a 2.4-liter four-cylinder option. Front-wheel drive is standard, but customers can choose all-wheel drive from a list of options, as well as continuous damping control that replaces the stock MacPherson strut with Hiper struts on the front suspension. Design
Externally, the sedan is attractive, against the background of competitors, it looks somewhat outdated, but the price is to blame. In terms of class, competitors are much more expensive, respectively, visually they look better.

In front of the driver is a 4-spoke steering wheel equipped with multimedia system control buttons, cruise control, heated steering wheel, etc. The steering wheel is electrically adjustable. Behind the steering wheel is a large instrument panel with two round gauges and a large square display in the center. A cool idea in a small climbing of the rings of gauges on the display, which in that place imitates dial gauges for battery charge and oil pressure - an unusual solution.
It is not necessary to use the Buick LaCrosse 2018-2019 instrument panel, because there is a projection on the windshield.
At the center of the dashboard is a stylishly integrated 8-inch IntelliLink multimedia system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. A smooth transition to the tunnel looks futuristic, at its beginning there is a thin control unit for separate climate control with monitors on the sides that display the temperature.
