The Russian version of the Skoda Rapid liftback was officially presented in April 2014 (and the production of this car in Kaluga was launched a little earlier - in February).

This inexpensive and compact, but cute and practical "five-door" formally belongs to the "B +" class, but in practice (in terms of its dimensions and equipment) it is easily ready to compete with many representatives of the "C-class" (than, in fact, the developers of this car "frankly trump").

By the way, a “restyled model” immediately came to us - because. the world debut of “this Rapid” took place back in 2012 (as part of the Paris Motor Show), the novelty immediately entered the showrooms of European dealers, and in 2013 it reached Ukraine and Kazakhstan ... and in the same 2013, a “hurried restyling” was carried out "(More like "work on the bugs") - the car received a new engine, a different steering wheel, an extended list of interior design options and new optional equipment (in particular, xenon headlights) ...

In February 2017, the five-door was subjected to another update, but it also cost little blood: it was slightly retouched in appearance, affecting the lighting equipment, radiator grille and bumper, new modern options were added and the palette of available power units was expanded (but only for Europe, on the Russian market motors remained the same).

The appearance of the car is made in the spirit of the "new corporate style" of the Czech automaker, which, in fact, "Rapid" laid the foundation for. However, calling this liftback a trendsetter in its class probably won’t work ... and it doesn’t claim this role, preferring to remain “a car with a simple but neat design, diluted with minor notes of sportiness, giving a special charm and charm.” In addition, simple shapes make it possible to provide very good aerodynamics for a budget car - by the way, the aerodynamic drag coefficient of its body is 0.30 Cx, which is very important for fuel economy.

The length of the liftback is 4483 mm, the length of the wheelbase is 2602 mm, the width of the body without mirrors is limited to 1706 mm, and the height does not go beyond 1461 mm. The front and rear track widths are respectively 1463 and 1500 mm for versions with 14-inch wheels, as well as 1457 and 1494 mm for modifications with 15-inch wheels.

The ride height (clearance) of the “European” Skoda Rapid liftback is 136 mm, but for Russia the clearance was increased to 170 mm.

The curb weight in the basic configuration does not exceed 1135 kg, and in the "top" equipment version - 1236 kg.

Salon "Rapida" is designed for five passengers and has a fairly simple design, which is distinguished by excellent ergonomics.

From the driver's seat, all controls are conveniently and easily accessible, and the front seats provide a very high level of comfort, which is quite rare for a budget car. The interior decoration uses soft plastic and fabric upholstery, but the Czechs obviously regretted the sound insulation, so you will have to put up with extraneous sounds in the cabin. As for free space, there is plenty of it both in front and behind.

The trunk does not lag behind - already in the base it is able to accommodate 530 liters of cargo, and with the rear row of seats folded down, even 1470 liters.

Specifications. In Russia, the Skoda Rapid liftback is offered with three types of gasoline power plant. But diesel engines (represented in Europe by several options at once) have not got into our country (at least for now), so we will have to limit ourselves only to what they offer:

  • As a base engine, the Czechs prepared a 3-cylinder atmospheric unit with a displacement of 1.2 liters (1198 cm³), equipped with an aluminum cylinder block, a distributed fuel injection system and a 12-valve DOHC timing mechanism. The engine fully meets the requirements of the Euro-5 environmental standard and is capable of producing no more than 75 hp. or 55 kW maximum power at 5400 rpm. The peak torque of this power unit falls at around 112 Nm, developed at 3750 rpm, which allows you to accelerate the Rapid liftback from 0 to 100 km / h in 13.9 seconds, and also reach a speed maximum of 175 km / h.
    The junior engine is aggregated with a non-alternative 5-speed "mechanics", with which the fuel consumption in the city is declared by the manufacturer at 8.4 liters, on the highway - 4.8 liters and in the combined cycle - 6.1 liters.
  • The second in our market is also an atmospheric unit, but with 4 cylinders and a working volume of 1.6 liters (1598 cm³). The engine is well known to Russian motorists from the VW Polo sedan and is capable of producing 110 hp. maximum power at 5800 rpm, as well as about 155 Nm of torque at a peak at 3800 rpm. This motor can be aggregated both with a 5-speed "mechanics" and with a 6-band "automatic". With this powertrain, the liftback hits a hundred on the speedometer in 10.3 / 11.6 seconds, top speed is fixed at 195 / 191 km / h, and average fuel consumption in the combined cycle is 5.8 / 6.1 liters per 100 km of track - respectively for "mechanics" / "automatic".
  • And, finally, the "flagship" in the Russian market - the Czechs offer this role a 1.4-liter 4-cylinder turbo unit with a cast-iron block and an aluminum block head, as well as direct fuel injection systems and variable valve timing. This engine, which fits into the Euro-5 standard, is capable of producing up to 125 hp. (92 kW) power at 5000 rpm, as well as exactly 200 Nm of torque in the range from 1400 to 4000 rpm. As a checkpoint for the flagship, Czech specialists chose a 7-band DSG “robot” with two clutches, which will allow the new product to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in just 9.0 seconds and eventually reach a speed maximum of 200 km / h. As for fuel consumption, in the city, the liftback will “eat” about 7.0 liters, on the highway it will be limited to 4.3 liters, and in the combined cycle of operation it will fit within 5.3 liters.

The Skoda Rapid liftback of the year has a common platform with the VW Polo peer sedan, but at the same time the Czechs made a number of changes to it, in particular, using some elements from Octavia and Fabia.

The Skoda Rapid has only a front-wheel drive, an independent suspension based on MacPherson struts is used in front, and a semi-independent torsion beam is used in the rear. Ventilated disc brakes are installed on the wheels of the front axle of the “Czech”, and simple disc brakes are enclosed on the rear wheels. Rack and pinion steering is supplemented by an electromechanical amplifier.

Note that the Czech engineers were very scrupulous about setting up the chassis. As a result, the liftback confidently holds the road, is easy to control even in tight turns, has good maneuverability and slows down well on any road surface. Of course, Rapid does not set record results in the listed "parameters", but it is not inferior to its main competitors. The most tangible disadvantage that was identified during the tests is the stiffness of the suspension, which is slightly higher than Russian drivers are usually used to, but for our country the Czechs, later, to some extent corrected this shortcoming.

Options and prices. In the Russian market, Skoda Rapid in 2017 is presented in four equipment options - "Entry", "Active", "Ambition" and "Style".

  • The basic equipment of the car costs from 604,000 rubles, and its functionality includes: a driver's airbag, two electric windows, a central lock, ABS, ESP, a steering column adjustable in two directions, an electric power steering, an on-board computer, an ERA-GLONASS system, audio preparation for four dynamics and some other options.
  • For a “top-end” performance, they ask for at least 817,000 rubles, and its privileges are: four airbags, heated front seats, cruise control, air conditioning, power windows for all doors, fog lights, “music” with six speakers, 15-inch alloy wheels and other "buns".

In addition, as an option, the liftback can be equipped with: bi-xenon headlights, front parking sensors and USB connectors on the second row of seats for recharging mobile devices.

Skoda Rapid - this budget liftback broke into the market relatively recently and immediately began to quickly and effectively conquer it. A new model in this segment was vital for the Czech concern, because the gap between Fabia and Octavia had already become so large that it was urgently needed to be filled with something. Just Rapid and is called upon to fulfill this mission.

Since the model is extremely popular, a comprehensive review is a must so that the dealer's customers know what to prepare for.

Exterior

The appearance of the 2013 liftback is designed in the true canons of the Czech brand. His whole image is permeated with severity, in some ways turning into pedantry. Each Skoda line is aligned and in place, all gaps are threaded, and the assembly is first-class.

The front of the Rapid meets everyone with a traditional radiator grille in the form of vertical blinds with chrome trim, as well as faceted, almost rectangular optics, which has become characteristic of many German models. Under them is a front bumper with straight outlines, the bottom of which is decorated with a very impressive and aggressive air intake, giving Skoda a certain seriousness and aggressiveness. All this is emphasized by the rectangular fog lamps of the model, “nested” along the edges of this very air intake. It is crowned by a sloping hood with a small Skoda nameplate and stampings in its plane.

The profile of the new 2014 model is just as mature. It is worth noting that the impressive, as for such a segment, doors provide easy disembarkation and landing in the cabin. There are 2 stampings on the doors of Rapida. The lower one is directly catching the area of ​​​​the doors, and the upper one is passing along the entire sidewall. Skoda has a very impressive side glazing area - unlike most models, rear door windows do not narrow.

The Rapid stern is kept in the same style. The straight and slightly curved lines of the taillights, bumper and tailgate form a harmonious composition, while chrome nameplates add to the entourage model.

Power units

The engines of this Skoda model are entirely gasoline, although diesel engines have long been traditional engines for Volkswagen AG cars. It is noteworthy that any category of drivers will find an engine to their liking.

The honorary list of Rapid opens with a frankly budgetary, 1.2-liter engine. It has an in-line design, an injector and a trio of cylinders, with 4 valves for each. The power of this engine is a modest 75 horses, which is only enough for unhurried movement within the city stream and the same ride on the highway. At the same time, sharp overtaking and starts from traffic lights are practically excluded. Such a Skoda engine is suitable for drivers without a desire for dynamics, as well as for those who do not plan to constantly carry 4-5 people in the cabin of the model. Up to a hundred, such a Rapid can accelerate in 13.9 seconds, and the appetite in the city is limited to 8 liters.

Silver goes to the larger and more powerful injection engine Rapid. This 1.6-liter aspirated has the usual 4 cylinders with 16 valves and already produces 105 horses. In principle, for a model of this weight and dimensions, this is enough. You don't have to hang out in the crowd on the streets, but you can overtake more confidently on the highway. As for the appetite of the Skoda engine, it varies depending on the box, but in general it is small - 9-10 liters, and this is in the city.

Gold predictably took a 1.4-liter turbocharged 16-valve, equipped with a direct injection system. Such technologies allow such a modest cubic capacity of the Skoda engine not only to produce 122 horses, but also to develop 200 “newtons” of thrust. The model boasts remarkable dynamics, exchanging a hundred in 9.5 seconds. And the most interesting thing is that such a Skoda engine has less appetite than the previous one - only 7.4 liters in the city.

Of course, the absence of solar-eating engines on the 2014 model year models will somewhat cool the ardor of potential customers of Skoda dealers, but not by much. In general, the range of engines is quite worthy - different types of construction, efficiency, power variations, etc.

Gearboxes

Checkpoints on Rapid can be different. The new car with a 1.2-liter gasoline engine is equipped exclusively with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The same unit is installed on the 1.6-liter model.

But there are versions for those who do not want to get tired in traffic jams. That's just for buyers of 1.2-liter cars, they are not available. But Skoda with a 1.6-liter engine can also be bought in a version with a traditional automatic transmission - a torque converter. I am also glad that these are not the old 4-speed mechanisms, which are still offered for many cars, but new, 6-band boxes.

Only a new model with a 1.4-liter turbo engine stands apart. It only comes with a 7-speed preselective transmission. Naturally, such a box as the DSG on the Rapid has a number of advantages, but the cost of its maintenance is also high. Also, their failures are not uncommon, and the price of repairs may seem simply huge (fortunately, if the case is under warranty).

In general, the gearboxes leave a good impression about this model and get along well with the engines. "Mechanics" will delight owners of Skoda versions with clarity of switching and short-stroke lever. The "automatic" in the 1.6-liter version also does not "get out", cheerfully going through the gears and promptly beating down the kick-down command. Well, Rapid's DSG is a charm at all - economical, nimble and very smooth.

Suspension

The drive for the Rapid model is available exclusively in the front - there are no alternatives. The chassis for all versions is almost the same. Everywhere the designers went for the installation of a traditional McPherson in front (independent scheme). On the rear axle of the 2014 model (even on the version with a 1.4-liter engine) there is a torsion beam. The difference is only in the design of the brake mechanisms - all versions of Skoda have front disc brakes with ventilation, and rear drum brakes, while on the “hottest” version, the rear ones are also disc brakes, but without ventilation.

But from this taxiing does not suffer. Rapid gambling in taxiing, of course, means its most powerful version. To some, the suspension of the model will seem harsh, but this is a feature of the German school. In general, the cars of 2014 are distinguished by their clarity, the absence of dips in corners and good stability in a straight line.

Interior

Salon Skoda of all versions is made in the same semi-official vein as the exterior. The torpedo model is clearly dominated by straight geometric lines, the panel itself seems to consist of several small steps. As for this price segment, the finishing materials are very high quality and expensive, but this has long been the hallmark of the Germans.

The ergonomics of the Rapid are purely "Volkswagen". In the 2013 model, everything is thought out thoroughly. Each button on the center console is in its place, as are the temperature dials. The shape and concentration of the air deflectors are perfectly thought out. The 4-spoke steering wheel of the model is made of a pleasant material, optimal in cross section and fits comfortably in the palm of your hand, and the dashboard has already become a standard - clear, clear and informative, but not without style. Visibility is good, the pillars are moderately wide, and the interior is very bright.

The chairs of the 2013 model are very comfortable, although for some they will be unnecessarily dense. But Skoda owners will definitely appreciate the good lateral support, as well as extensive adjustments. The rear sofa was originally designed for two passengers. There is not much legroom, but not too large passengers will ride there comfortably. The luggage compartment of the Rapid is 530 liters, but with the sofa unfolded, it rises to 1,470 liters.

Equipment and cost

The new machine is sold in 3 versions:

The first version has one pillow, as well as EBD and ABS systems. The exterior gives out the presence of steel wheels and halogen optics on the Rapid. Heated front seats cost 8,000 rubles, fog lights - 7,400 rubles, air conditioning - 27,900 rubles. and radio from 7,000 to 10,000 rubles.

Skoda in the Ambition version has another air-run, on-board computer, full power accessories, air conditioning and radio. Additionally, you can order ESP (7,000 rubles), xenon (23,900 rubles), cruise control (7,000 rubles), multifunction steering wheel (11,300 rubles), Amudsen system (navigation and radio for 28,000 rubles), climate control (13,000 rubles), Bluetooth (10,000 rubles), etc.

The richest version of Rapid - Elegance - separately boasts the presence of side airbags, 15-inch titanium, an armrest with a leather steering wheel, fog lights, climate control and cruise control. Everything else in this version can be ordered additionally, including 6 extended option packages.

The price for the versions of the 2013 and 2014 models ranges from:

Outcome

The review shows that, in general, the Skoda Rapid is an excellent car - with a wide variety of engines, gearboxes and options, attractive exterior and interior, and good equipment. Disappointing only expensive options.

For a little money we go, as in Europe, but we carry, as in Russia.

The new Skoda Rapid in the Russian configuration is not much different from the European one. This means that in Europe the roads have become worse, in our country they cannot be better. In a word, in a car on asphalt, rolled out by concrete mixers, it shakes, Dagestan taxi drivers will like the “six” on the move more.

The last 10 years have taught us that Škoda are simplified copies of Volkswagen's budget models. Similar wheelbase length, similar interiors, but more modest price. And now let's put it out of our heads: formally, the Volkswagen Polo sedan is an analogue of the Škoda Rapid, but it has a smaller wheelbase and is cheaper than the Škoda!

But even more surprising is that the class B liftback surpasses the once popular Škoda Octavia Tour in terms of dimensions. It is she who should be taken as a starting point.
"Skoda Rapid" is almost the same - a simple and very spacious car. The wheelbase length, as the main parameter that determines the dimensions of the cabin, is 2,602 mm for the Skoda Rapid, which is 50 mm more than the Polo sedan and as much as 102 mm more than the Octavia Tour.

In fairness, it must be said that the base and the base are even longer, but they are deprived of such wide possibilities for transforming the interior.

The trunk size of the Skoda Rapid did not let us down either - 530 liters. Formally, it has more, but given the restrictions on the transformation of the sedan, I would not compare these trunks.

The ability to fold the seats and get a single volume for transporting long items and refrigerators in my eyes is much more valuable than abstract liters, which are far from always possible to use for their intended purpose. The Skoda Rapid would still have a flat floor, with the rear seats folded down, but this feature of the models is a couple of steps higher.

One of the hallmarks of the Škoda Rapid are small but nice options that should make everyday driving more convenient and comfortable. In total, marketers counted as many as 12 such ideas in the Skoda Rapid salon. I didn't like all of them, but some are worth mentioning. For example, the trunk has a double-sided floor. On the one hand, it is habitually fleecy, and on the other, it has a rubber coating with small sides - the very thing for transporting dirty things. Then it can be removed from the trunk and easily shaken off or wiped with a damp cloth. Also, in the 530-liter compartment, the abundance of hooks for installing partitions and nets turned out to be very handy - a really simple and, at the same time, very convenient solution.

An ice scraper was hidden on the cap of the gas tank, ... and also this magnifying glass for making a fire.

What else? Well, music lovers will appreciate the USB connector that has finally appeared in Volkswagen cars. True, it is offered only in expensive versions, but it allows you not only to listen to music from a flash drive, but also to recharge your mobile phone. And for the latter, a special holder is provided in the cup holder. It’s a pity that my 5-inch smartphone didn’t fit in it, but Skoda Rapid will be happy with any kind of iPhone.

Climate control is exclusively single-zone, but powerful. Finally, on the cars of the VW group, a USB connector appeared for connecting flash drives and charging a mobile

The plastic on the front panel and doors, as you would expect, is hard, but it fits perfectly in German. In Europe, there are even versions with a beige interior, sports seats with integrated headrests, a glass roof and even a Styling package with colored inserts on the front panel, black mirror caps and 17-inch wheels. On this version, I also swept, but more on that later.

However, you won’t be happy with the trunk, interior and gadgets, so instead of loading the car to the eyeballs, turning on the rock and looking at the joints of the panels with a magnifying glass, I rushed behind the wheel.

For the first acquaintance, I chose the most modest 75-horsepower version with a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine.

Needless to say, the miracle did not happen, we were traveling together with a companion and practically without things, but the capabilities of the motor were barely enough. In part, the situation is saved by a short transmission and good sound insulation, but in an attempt to keep up with the flow, the engine has to be turned up to 3-4 thousand revolutions per minute, and when overtaking, it is better to think over everything three times and decide, is it necessary to hurry? I don’t even want to think about what will happen if I load the maximum 535 kg into the Skoda Rapid, as Škoda allows. You will have to completely forget about driving along a narrow highway with overtaking on an oncoming lane.

Skoda Rapid: And to the country house and to the sea. But the motor would be better to have more powerful.

Even twisting the gears to the red zone of the tachometer, the dynamics are, frankly, sad. At the same time, fuel consumption during the test on fairly empty Croatian tracks exceeded 10 liters. So, having saved on purchase, you will have to pay at the gas station for a relatively normal ride.

Since the test drive took place in Europe, I didn’t have the opportunity to test the middle version with a 1.6 engine, but I tried the top version 1.4TSI with a 7-speed DSG. This is already a popular sports car - the first hundred in less than 10 seconds, and the maximum speed is over 200 km / h. At the same time, the average fuel consumption was only 7.5 liters, for which thanks to both the outstanding engine and transmission. Of course, due to the presence of a turbine and stringent environmental requirements, reactions to gas are far from instantaneous, but you quickly get used to it.

Skoda Rapid has a whole line of the best engines from the Volkswagen group. Let's hope that with Russian fuel there will be no doubts about their reliability.

I have only two serious nitpicks about the 1.4TSI with a 7-speed DSG: its reliability and durability are not very clear, and I would also like a few other settings for the gearbox. She shifts gears ideally quickly, but does not always do it in a timely manner. In Drive mode, sometimes you have to drive to reset a couple of gears to the bottom, and in Sport, on the contrary, the ride becomes unnecessarily jerky. The optimal solution would be paddle shifters for self-selection of gears, but they are not available even for a surcharge.

Still, the Skoda Rapid is a budget model, although it also has ambitions and really beautiful equipment.

Sharp turns Rapid attacks with the agility of a young puppy and gives the driver unexpected pleasure for a budget car - a real German!

My acquaintance with the loaded Rapid took place in the rain, and the wide 17-inch wheels played a cruel joke on me. On the descent of a narrow winding road, the new smooth asphalt suddenly gave way to the old patched one, and exactly at the same time a truck flew out towards me at a good speed, occupying clearly more than the lane allotted to it.

I had to brake sharply right on the arc, and at some point I even had to choose between two evils: get to know the truck or the bump stop. Of course, I chose the latter. Fortunately, the insurance electronics did everything right, and the acquaintance was put aside in the back drawer of my luggage of road stories.

The next morning, when the weather improved, the hot Skoda Rapid was fully rehabilitated. Despite a ground clearance of 143 mm, it resists roll very well, and unlike many budget classmates, Škoda gladly gives the driver the pleasure of a dynamic ride. This also applies to the base model 1.2, but only adjusted for the slope of the road - if it goes down, then the buzz is guaranteed, and up - only slowly and at speeds close to maximum.

In my free time from the main program, I also managed to get acquainted with the Rapid Spaceback model, which is a cross between a station wagon and a hatchback.

In profile, the Skoda Rapid Spaceback is not difficult to confuse with an Audi, and this is a forest comparison. Throw in sporty 17-inch wheels and a 122-horsepower turbo and you've got a city lighter.

Spaceback is shorter than the liftback by 18 cm, but for my taste it looks more organic and fresh. In addition, due to the different shape of the rear doors and roof, it has more headroom for those sitting in the back. If in the usual Skoda Rapid, with a height of 181 cm, I have a serious margin in length, but I almost rest against the ceiling, then in the Spaceback I still have a few centimeters above the top of my head.

Spaceback is shorter than the liftback by 18 cm at once, so it has a smaller trunk. But there is a little more space above the heads of the rear passengers, and the design itself is fresher and faster.

We also managed to get acquainted with a 105-horsepower 1.6-liter turbodiesel. This motor, unfortunately, is not sold in Russia, but it should definitely be considered if you plan to bring yourself a used Volkswagen or Škoda from Europe. It is offered on models in the B and C segments, and even with very dynamic driving, fuel consumption does not exceed 6 liters, so that you can drive almost 1000 km on a 55-liter tank.

An even more valuable quality is the pleasure of traction. Where the gasoline aspirated does not respond at all to pressing the gas pedal, and the 1.4 TSI engine behaves unnecessarily twitchy, the diesel engine calmly and confidently carries any load to any mountains. And at the same time, with careless handling of the gas pedal, it tries to break the wheels into slipping not only in first, but also in second gear.

It turns out that for my taste the optimal Rapid is a Spaceback with a turbodiesel, however, we definitely won’t see such a car new. And if so, I strongly advise you to pay attention to the liftback with aspirated 1.6. Mechanics or a traditional 6-speed automatic - to choose from. It will turn out to be a very comfortable, roomy, and most importantly very balanced car for the whole family in terms of its driving characteristics.

But unlike the Volkswagen Polosedan, you can already order air conditioning, heated seats and other necessary options for it.

A normally equipped Rapid with a 1.6 engine, mechanics in the Ambition configuration already costs 599 thousand, and on such a car you can safely leave the passenger compartment and not feel infringed on comfort. Surcharge for a 6-speed automatic will be exactly 50 thousand.
