Real experience. Winter tires - tests & comparison

Real experience. Winter tires - tests & comparison

So, continuing with my Lada Grants, I decided that it was time to change my shoes, since the average daily temperature had long since dropped below the 6-7 degrees Celsius recommended for changing shoes in Russia.

The choice of winter tires for Grants

Initially, I wanted to purchase Nokian Nordman 4 winter studded tires for my Lada Granta with manufacturer's recommended parameters 175/65 R14. The price is quite acceptable - from 1930 rubles apiece (I met up to 2500 rubles). Judging by the reviews on the thematic forums, grantmakers successfully use Nokian Nordman for their cars. Moderately noisy tires that hold the road well, etc. In general, high-quality budget winter tires for our car. However...

By the will of fate, it so happened that when I arrived at one store (after calling!) For Nokian, it was not available. But... The seller in a nearby specialized store strongly advised me to pay attention to winter tires for Matador MP 50 Sibir Ice Grants with the same recommended sizes for the Norma configuration - 175/65 R14. The price is comparable to the previous option.

The seller was so convincing that I took the Matador without hesitation. German quality plus excellent reviews of "live" buyers (namely on the Grant). Continental tread pattern (one to one!), very high quality studding were clearly in favor of the Matador. Plus, the rubber is also moderately noisy with excellent grip.

Manufacturer's tire requirements:
pressure check a couple of times a month
the first 500 km avoid skidding (the so-called running-in)
replacement at an average daily temperature of + 7 degrees
store tires on rims horizontally, without rims - vertically, turning monthly
avoid hitting bumps in the road.

Review from the Internet about Matador MP 50 Sibir Ice:

At first, when I took it, I was tormented by doubts (just like mine). I thought that the spikes would fly out in a month, or hernias would appear. What is the result? Departure of the first winter as in Christ's bosom. Even ice, even snow - the road keeps excellent. Rubber is not noisy. After the winter, all the spikes are in place (correctly run in), there are no hernias. I constantly caught myself thinking that I liked the former Hakapellita (darling) less. Good tires for normal driving.

And what about "sticky"?

As an option for operation in my region, I dismissed immediately. Although initially I read a lot of positive reviews about her, and the "neighbor" said that he even had a classic and had never had problems on the road with her.

In a word, I installed the Matador Sibir Ice winter studded tires on my Grant. In terms of price-quality ratio, in my understanding, it surpasses its closest competitors. I put it in the service - for 900 rubles for factory stamped wheels. He put on cute caps on top (see photo below).

I drove around the area. I did not notice a special (strong) difference in noise between my native all-weather and the new studded one. Naturally, the spikes are a bit noisier on asphalt. I'm slowly rolling. And then it will be seen. Buying is not for one season.

Mileage 2202 km. Flight is normal.

PS. Now my review :) To date, I have driven 2250+ km on this rubber. Excellent road holding: that icy asphalt that snow. It is a bit noisy on the asphalt, but you can talk at 140 km / h without raising your voice)). In the snow - there is no price at all. Grant herself behaves very confidently on the snow (), and even on the spikes of Siberia Ice, it generally rushes like a tank.

Granta is a relatively new front-wheel drive car developed by VAZ based on Kalina and put into production in 2011. Since that time, along with sedan-type models, the Lada Granta liftback has also been produced. The body change did not affect the tire size, unlike the Sedan Sport modification.

We offer you to get acquainted with the parameters of the tires used on these cars, as well as present a small selection of models for winter and summer.

Basic tire sizes

In principle, to find out what size tires you can put on a Lada Grant, just look in your passport or on a plate on the inside of the car door.

Nevertheless, we present to your attention a list of parameters that the manufacturer declares using the example of modifications of 2018 release:

Tire pressure

We found out which tires are suitable for the Lada Granta - now let's deal with the pressure. A lot depends on it during the operation of tires, the purchase of which is one of the sources of expenditure for any car owner. The pressure must be constantly monitored so that the tires do not wear out too quickly.

Premature wear occurs with a lack of pressure, but pumping is fraught with consequences.

  • If the pressure is regularly lowered by 0.5 atm less than the norm for 14 radius of 1.9 atm in front and 2.0 atm at the rear, tires will last 4 times less - plus fuel consumption increases.
  • With an even greater lack of pressure, the car can lose control, the braking distance increases.
  • If you drive half-flat tires for a long time, and then pump them up, the tire can simply explode.

Therefore, you need to have a pressure gauge on hand, take measurements from time to time (especially in winter), and if you need to pump up the wheels. The pressure in the front and rear pairs of tires should be the same.

Specific figures depend on the size of the wheels. Take, for example, profile 195/50, which is one of the replacement options for LADA Sedan Sport. If this is a radius of 15, then the optimal pressure is 2.3 atm, and in the 16th radius, you need to pump already 2.4 atm.

Selection of tires by models

Knowing the size of the "shoes", it remains only to choose a style. Any car should have two sets of tires: winter and summer. Winter tires are installed without waiting for frost, but when the thermometer regularly drops below +5 degrees.

To save money on buying winter tires, some drivers make the mistaken decision to drive all-season. Therefore, we will make a small digression, and explain why this is not necessary.

When and what kind of tires do you need for a car

Let's say right away that there are no tires that would behave stably in any conditions. Why, then, is the tire called an all-weather tire? Because of the tread, which should have a deep relief and grooves through which water, mud, and snow slush easily pass.

All-weather tires are called tires, which are comfortable to ride in the off-season, when the air temperature varies from +7 to -10 degrees. It often bears the designation M + S (mud / snow), which confuses many.

But in fact, an all-weather tire is a summer tire, and is not suitable for year-round driving, even in the southern regions of the country.

  • All mud tires, and all winter tires, have an all-weather tread. The only difference is in the composition of the rubber, which is designed for positive or negative operation of the wheels. On a winter tire, for better grip on an icy road, many thread-like sipes are made, which distinguishes it from an all-season tire.
  • A non-studded winter tire is popularly called Velcro. On such rubber, the car feels great in ice, but when there is a stable positive temperature on the street (above + 6-7 degrees), it must be changed into summer shoes.
  • Winter tires are much softer, so if you try to ride them in the summer, they will wear out quickly. Studded tires are better suited for driving on snow, so when in winter you have to drive not on cleared asphalt, but on a country road, it is better to give preference to studded tires.
  • All year round, all-season driving is mainly done by trucks, buses, in which changing wheels is a laborious process, and besides, there are usually more than four of them. True, in severe frosts and snowfalls, they are not at all sweet on such rubber.

And another important factor - for those who spend a lot of time behind the wheel. A tire for winter use is much softer than a summer tire, but it also makes noise when driving, especially studded ones.

Summer, and it is also all-weather, in severe frost "dubeet" and directly rattles. And this is not to mention the fact that on the ice you will not only ride on it, but perform figure skating.

Winter tires on Lada Granta

Now let's see which winter tires to choose for the Lada Grant:

A relatively new model, developed by the German Continental together with Italian engineers, and put into production at the facilities of the Nizhnekamsk Tire Plant.

The asymmetric tread pattern, the combination of mid-blocks with rows of studs along the edges, and variable sidewall stiffness technology provide safe driving, cornering stability and when crossing bumps in the road.

Winter tires from the Japanese Toyo are deservedly considered one of the best. If earlier only sellers and those who drove it knew about it, then not so long ago a test conducted at the training ground left no doubts.

The Observe Garit G3-Ice tires competed against the Finnish Hakkapeliitta-7, losing slightly in the snowy areas and pulling ahead on the packed track. Experts believe that the whole point is in the spikes that protrude beyond the surface of the tire by 1.2 mm more than the norm.

Another novelty. Atypical tread pattern - as, indeed, in all models from Goodyear. Looking at it, it seems that the whole wheel is simply cut into grooves. It is they who provide the tire with excellent handling in loose snow.

Another distinctive feature is the hexagonal spikes, which make it possible to accelerate quickly and brake safely.

Winter studded tires of different generations from the Korean manufacturer Hankook have long established themselves as an excellent combination of price and quality. The latest model has been somewhat redesigned, the shape of some tread elements has slightly changed, although the pattern symmetry and directionality have been preserved.

Massive blocks on the sides replaced narrow ribs, and the tire began to work better in icy conditions.

The best models for summer

Now we present some worthy summer models:

The tread of this Japanese tire was developed using a new technology (NANO-PROTECH), which made it possible to reduce the coefficient of resistance to rotation, and as a result, save fuel consumption. Plus, the EP150 turned out to be lighter in weight and almost silent.

Another Japanese tire made in Malaysia. Very soft rubber, perfectly balanced and brakes, thanks to the deep tread, self-cleaning from dirt and snow. With all this, the most pleasant thing is the low price.

Serbian Kormoran is designed according to Michelin technologies. The tire is stable when driving at speed, does not “float” in a puddle, has excellent traction and is controlled when cornering.

Matador MP 47 Hectorra

The MP-47 Hectorra summer tire from Slovenia in the new generation performs well both on dry and wet surfaces thanks to an asymmetric pattern with four deep longitudinal grooves.

The tread elements are maximally optimized, which improves acceleration and braking efforts, and reduces the noise level.

Conclusion

Which winter tires are better for a car, or what to change into for the summer, of course, is up to the owner to decide. It all depends on what climate zone you have to use the car, what roads to drive on. And our information is designed to understand the characteristics of certain models and the appropriateness of their use.

Lada Granta is a budget mass car produced by the Volga Automobile Plant based on the Lada Kalina.

This car has gained great popularity among the citizens of Russia and the CIS countries. In view of its demand, the issue of replacing winter tires with the Grant is relevant.

The safety of all road users, as well as the comfort of the driver and passengers while driving, depends on well-chosen winter tires.

This article will discuss the features and main characteristics of winter tires for the Lada Granta car, describe the rules for choosing winter tires for the Granta liftback and its other modifications.

Rubber on the "Grant"

When choosing winter tires for a Lada Granta car, you need to know exactly which modification of this car the tires are selected for. Lada Granta of the first generation began to be produced in May 2011 in a sedan body in several trim levels. At the same time, Lada Granta Sport was introduced. In May 2015, the production of Lada Granta Liftback began.

The release of the first generation "Grants" was completed in 2018. In 2019, mass production of the second-generation Lada Granta car began in two body styles: a sedan and a liftback, in several configurations.

The internal designation of the car "Lada Granta" sedan is VAZ 2190, "Lada Granda" liftback is VAZ 2191.

Characteristics

Any car tire has a number of characteristics that must be considered in order to choose the right rubber for your car.

The first most important characteristic of rubber is the dimension. Tire dimensions on the example of marking 175/65 R14:

  • 175 is the width of the tire, measured in millimeters.
  • 65 is the height of the profile, measured as a percentage of the width of the rubber.
  • R - says that the tire is radial (from the English word radial), but definitely not that the radius designation follows, as many people think. The wheels don't have a radius, just a diameter. The radiality of a tire is a type of tire design. There is also a diagonal type of tire.
  • 14 is the tire diameter in inches. To convert this indicator into the usual centimeters, you need to multiply the inch value by 2.54.

Tire size

The second important characteristic of any tire is the index of maximum mass and speed. It is most often recommended to install 82 H tires on Grant cars. This marking indicates that this tire is capable of withstanding loads up to 475 kg and works effectively at speeds up to 210 km / h.

Note!

The maximum load parameter is specified for one tire. Therefore, for a set of 4 tires, the maximum load in this case will be 1 t 900 kg. Considering that the average gross weight of the Grant is 1.5 tons, the tire load is calculated with a good margin.

Next, you need to pay attention to the presence of spikes. Many variants of winter tires are produced without studs at all. Some have rare spikes. Each manufacturer strives to come up with a new, improved type of spikes. They differ in shape, size and material from which they are made. Their main purpose is to pierce the ice for better starting and braking on icy surfaces.

Additional Information!

In many countries, including Russia, there is a legal restriction on too many studs on a tire. This is due to the fact that the spikes damage the asphalt surface.

The next important factor is the depth of the tread pattern and the pattern itself. The quality of grip of the wheels with the road surface depends on the tread. The more technologically advanced the pattern on the rubber is, the better the noise, drainage and reliability characteristics of the tires will be.

In addition, there are many other features. In general, the better a tire is, the more reliable and stable it will provide.

Low-quality cheap tires can also wear out and lose studs extremely quickly, so these savings are not always worth it.

How to choose tires for driving in winter on the Lada Grant liftback

In order to correctly select the size of tires for the Lada Grant in the back of a liftback, you need to know that this car was produced in the first generation in 3 trim levels. The dimensions of the tires installed by the manufacturer according to the configurations:

  • Standard: 175/65 R14 82H and 185/60 R14 82H.
  • Norm: 175/65 R14 82H and 185/60 R14 82H.
  • Suite: 175/65 R14 82H, 185/60 R14 82H and 185/55 R15 82H.

Note!

The above data refers specifically to the tire dimensions that the manufacturer installs on new cars.

The size of the wheels on the "Grant" liftback.

In addition, the manufacturer allows the following wheels to be installed on all modifications of the VAZ-2191 car: 175/65 R14 82T, H; 185/60 R14 82T, H; 185/55 R15 82T, H, V.

The car of the second generation "Lada Granta" will enter the market in 4 versions. Tire dimensions by configuration:

  • Standard, Classic, Optima, Comfort: 175/65 R14 and 185/60 R14 steel 82H.
  • Luxe, Prestige: 185/55 R15 light alloy 82H.

What you should pay attention to when choosing tires for the "Grant"

When choosing winter car tires, special attention should be paid to the road surface on which these tires are supposed to be used.

If the tires are designed for dirt and off-road, they can handle snowdrifts, sleet and ice more easily, but may not be effective on wet pavement. In addition, powerful tires that perform well in rural conditions can wear out heavily when driving on a clean highway. On the contrary, tires designed for everyday city driving may not be able to cope even with light off-road.

The main parameters of winter wheels on the "Lada Grant"

Above, the dimension of winter tires for the Lada Granta car in the liftback body has already been described in detail. You should also indicate the main parameters of winter tires for other variations of the car.

Tires for "Grants Sport"

Tire sizes for Lada Granta sedan of the first generation by configuration:

  • Standard: 175/70 R13 82 T,H.
  • Norm: 175/65 R14 82H.
  • Suite: 175/65 R14 and 82H 185/55 R15.

The tire sizes for the Lada Grants in the second-generation sedan are identical to the dimensions of the same car in the liftback body.

Lada Granta Sport is equipped with tires 195/50 R16 (84, V) and 185/55 R15 (82, N/V). Lada Granta Drive Active is produced with 185/55 R15 (82, H) tires.

Thus, when choosing winter tires for a domestic car Lada Granta, it is necessary to pay attention to a number of important characteristics: dimension, tread pattern, the presence of spikes and others. By following all the rules for selecting tires, you can ensure safe and comfortable driving in a car in the winter season. Winter tires on the Grant R14 are the most popular size option.

The question “which tires can be put on a grant” cannot be answered unambiguously. As is the case with other machines, the selection of tires and rims is a priority for every driver, as the right selection will ensure a comfortable and safe ride.

In order to choose the right size and find out which tires are best for the Lada Grant, you should analyze many factors that directly affect the choice.

The sphere of influence of tires and wheels

To understand which tires are the best fit for a grant, you first need to find out what the size of the tires and rims of the car affects. Specialists with service stations note that when replacing tires, one should be guided by the fact that the difference in outer diameter is minimal.

The selection of tires affects the following features of the operation of the car:

  • brake and traction characteristics;
  • transmission;
  • fuel consumption;
  • atmospheric emissions.

Increasing the radius of the wheel, tire and rim has the following effect.

Legend: + - improvement, - - deterioration, 0 - no change.

Changing the size of the tires will definitely lead to changes in the driving precision of the vehicle. As the volume of the tire becomes larger, the scale of the space in contact with the roadway increases. This provides ample opportunities for maneuverability.

Factory characteristics of tires and disks for LadaGranta

According to the factory specifications, the original tires on a grant from the factory have a radius of R14 and R13.
R14 is a fairly classic option for small cars. Both wheels and tires with these dimensional characteristics are budget-friendly and it is quite easy to find them on the market. The situation is similar with R13. Therefore, when analyzing which disks are suitable for a grant, you should keep this moment in mind.

Dimensional characteristics of tires and wheels that are also suitable for LadaGranta
To date, all AvtoVAZ models with front-wheel drive are equipped with R15 size discs. And although the original Lada Granta R15 tires with this wheel model have dimensional characteristics of 185/55, they will also fit well with 175/70, 185/60 and even 195/55 tires.

The pressure in the tires of the grant of the basic factory equipment, namely R13 and R14 at partial load looks like this:
R13 (175/70) - 0.19/0.19 (1.9/1.9)
R14 (175/65) - 0.20/0.20 (2.0/2.0)
The data are presented in the ratio "kg/cm2".
The pressure in the tires of the grant sport is approximately at the same level, adjusted for the dimensional characteristics of the wheel, namely R16.

Constant monitoring of the level of tire pressure ensures the safety of movement and is the prevention of tire wear. If the pressure is at a lower level (below 1.9 atmospheres), then the side parts of the tread, due to the uneven distribution of air while driving, will wear out much more. When pumping tires (above a value of 2.0), the middle part of the tread will suffer, which is also fraught with its consequences.

The list of negative consequences from uneven distribution of pressure in the tire:

  1. the scale of contact with the road is expanding;
  2. fast and uneven tread wear;
  3. decrease in vehicle controllability;
  4. potential danger of creating an emergency situation on the road.

To correctly measure tire pressure, you need a pressure gauge. Measurements should be carried out some time after the ride, so that the air in the tires has time to cool down after intense heating during driving. The optimal value indicator (for R13 - 1.9, for R14 - 2.0) is indicated as a number that can be found on the gas tank or car door. It is important that during the use of the pressure gauge, air does not escape from the wheel.

The resulting value must be compared with the optimal one and pumped up to the desired one. For wheels that are parallel and on the same axle, the pressure level should be identical.

Is it possible to install wheels with dimensions R16 205/55 on Lada Granta

Wheels with a radius of R16 and a dimension of 205/55 are not suitable for both the standard configuration of LadaGranta and the Sport model. Due to the too large diameter, they will fit too tightly, which, when driving, will lead to rapid wear of the treads and reduce the maneuverability of the car. Lada Grant owners recommend installing 195/50 or 205/45 with a radius of R16.

Winter tires for LadaGranta

The selection of winter tires for the Lada Grant should be carried out based on the characteristics of the terrain on which you have to drive. If the roads are not cleared enough, and winter threatens with frequent thaws replacing frosts, then in this case studded tires should be used.

Tires for winter use should have soft contact with the road surface, which will provide a reliable degree of grip even on packed snow, and the base of the tread should be rigid for precise control. Firms Goodyear, Pirelli and Dinlop Winter have the necessary dimensional characteristics for the Lada Grant, namely in the range from R13 to R16.

Winter tires will also require a break-in to allow them to sit firmly in their seats. For a quality break-in, you will need to drive about 500 kilometers. When running in, try to avoid sudden braking and slipping. To improve traction, it is also recommended to choose tires with a narrow profile.

Summer tires for LadaGranta

High-quality summer tires should provide a high level of grip on both dry and wet pavement, as well as a smooth ride. Tires should have a wide profile, and rubber with dimensional characteristics R14 185/60 or R14 175/65 is best suited for this.

Brief checklist - How to buy tires for Lada Granta

1. You should look for the right tires, keeping in mind the dimensional factory specifications. The size of the selected tires must match these data.
2. Pay attention to the tread pattern. It has a lot to do with ride comfort.

3. Pay attention to the width options. It is the width of the spot that converges with the roadway that affects the acceleration and deceleration of the car.
4. Particular attention should be paid to the bore diameter. Tires that are too high or too wide can damage the suspension, tires that are too narrow will increase the load on the bearings.
5. It is important to consider the maximum speed index and the load capacity index.
6. Treadwear, Traction, Temperature, and MaxPressure data provide information on tire factory wear, braking performance, temperature resistance, and tire pressure limit, respectively.

Lada Granta: repair, operation, tuning and maintenance. Winter tires on a grant which are better

Winter tires, which one is better?

So Winter is on the heels and many Grant owners are wondering whether to leave all-season tires or “change shoes” into winter ones - it depends on the region in which Lada Granta travels, and on how intense the trips will be and on what roads.

For winter it is better to use winter "shoes". At the same time, studded tires from Goodyear, Pirelli, Michelin X-Ice are indispensable on poorly cleared roads and in winter with frequent thaws and frosts, and also if you have to drive mainly on packed snow. For residents of large cities who use Lada Granta only for commuting, ordinary winter tires from such well-known companies as Hankook Goodyear, Cordiant, Continental, etc. are sufficient.

Winter tires need to be soft in contact with the road (for good grip) and stiff at the base of the tread for precise handling. These properties are possessed by new models that entered the Russian market:

1. Goodyear UltraGrip Ice Arctic, UltraGrip 8 Performance, choice of sizes for Lada Grants: bore diameter from R13 to R17, width from 175 to 225 mm.

2. Pirelli sizes from 13 to 20 inches.

3. Continental offer ContiWinterContact non-studded tires in sizes ranging from 15 to 16 inches.

4. Dynlop Winter, choice of size for Lada Grants: bore diameter R13 -16, profile width 155

5. Yokohama offers the iceGuard friction tire, we only offer tires in 15", 16" and 18" diameters, but in the near future the size range will expand from 12" to 19".

6. Hankook friction winter tire Winter i*cept tires will be sold in common sizes from 14 to 16 inches

7. Cordiant Winter Drive comes in popular sizes: 175/70R13, 175/65R14, 185/60R14, 185/65R15, 195/65R15, 205/55R16, 205/60R16, 215/65R16 have the same height.

In order for studded tires to last for a long time, it is important for you to properly run them in so that the studs settle in their landing slots.

The first 500 km should be driven without overloads, do not skid, do not brake sharply and take corners in easy mode. You should be especially careful with the spikes when driving on dry asphalt and across tram tracks and curbs.

When buying winter tires, you should not forget that tires are punctured more often in winter than in summer, and you cannot do without a winter spare tire.

For owners of a car brand like Lada Grant, with the advent of winter, there is a problem with the right choice of winter tires.

Everyone knows that it is better to make a choice of winter tires early so that the choice is thoughtful and balanced. So that during each season you don’t stand in long queues for a tire fitting, you also need to buy additional disks, and as a result, you won’t waste time on queues and you can change the wheels yourself, which in the end will help save money. Some experts say that urban roads, you should not install tires with spikes, but it is better to install Velcro tires. But with this choice, it is worth considering how often the roads are cleared of snow drifts, and the tracks are cleaned even less often, and in such a situation it is better to opt for studded tires. Before you start choosing a winter tire, you need to look through a lot of useful information and listen to reviews from others car owners for various brands of winter tires.

Having studied all the data, you can come to a conclusion and make a list of the most common and frequently used brands of winter tires for Lada Grant. It is possible to note such a German brand as Continental ConticleContact, among the Finnish brands stands out a brand called Nokian Hakkarelitta 7. An even greater demand is for such a tire brand as Gislavde Nord Frost 5, this brand is produced by a subsidiary of Continental. Often used is a company from France, which produces a tire brand such as Michelin X-Ice North XIN2.

From time to time, tests are made in which different brands of tires are compared, and mainly the German and Finnish manufacturers are in the lead in these tests. That is, we can say with confidence that the best of the above brands are Nokian Hakkarelitta 7 and Continental ConticleContact. It is safe to say that the manufacturers of these brands of tires have also been leaders in the past years. Gislavde tires are considered good tires, but they also have such a drawback as a weak cord. If the wheel hits the curb, then immediately a bump will appear on the tire. Tires from the Michelin brand also have their positive and negative sides. The negative side can be attributed to poor cross-country ability in deep snow and, accordingly, if you have to drive in such an area where there is always a lot of snow, then you should not choose these tires.

Tires and wheels on the fret of the grant: how and which ones to choose?

So, I will say right away that the information described below takes place to be solely my own opinion, because the article has been assigned the rank of the author. The author is me, Kirill Sinich. I have owned a Lada Grant car for about six months now, and when buying, of course, I needed a choice of both tires and wheels, because what comes from the factory is more than a nightmare.

So, let's proceed to the choice of disks. Disks are stamped (the cheapest), cast (medium in price and very diverse in assortment) and forged - the most expensive of those listed. So, if you are absolutely not a car gourmet, then you can safely take the usual stampings for 14 radius and cheerfully start driving. These discs do not have any particular drawbacks, except for their extremely dull appearance. The appearance of the car does not really matter to you - stamped wheels are for you! If you want a more interesting shape of discs than stamped holes, this is casting. Almost any shape of a wheel can be made by casting, which is why the way your car looks is limited only by the imagination of the designer who comes up with the wheel. In the modern world, dozens of casting varieties can be found in car dealerships.

Of course, they all differ in composition, appearance, weight and price. Personally, I don't recommend buying wheels that are too light or have too much space between the spokes. The thinner the spokes and the smaller the distance between them, the more likely they are to break. In addition, in winter, a heavier disc rows better, it has been tested on personal experience, and rare spokes in a disc are unlikely to give the latter a decent mass. All other parameters, such as color, the geometry of the spokes, their length, will not affect the driving properties of the car. Another thing is the drive out. Here you should adhere to the standard parameters of your car. Disks "with a departure" put a load on the wheel bearings, thereby quickly disabling them. As for forged wheels, they tend to be slightly larger in weight and, most importantly, have greater rigidity compared to cast ones. They are more protected from shock loads, their service life exceeds the service life of cast and stamped discs. However, forging does not make it possible to make such a huge variety of shapes from metal, therefore the choice of forged wheels is often less than cast ones. They are also distinguished by a higher price compared to other drives, but I believe that in most cases it does not justify itself. A little about the radius: the radius of the disk determines its size. On the grant, discs with a radius of 14 are standard, and I strongly advise against increasing it. The increased radius, as a rule, negatively affects the controllability of the car and its driving characteristics. And the increase in the radius does not give any aesthetic component.

Now with regard to tires for grants. Summer standard tires that come from the factory are quite tolerable. At speeds above hundreds, it behaves quite stably, the grip is satisfactory. Therefore, it is worth thinking about replacing it in a few years - when the resource of summer tires comes to an end. Winter tires must be purchased immediately before the first winter, and here in the tire outlets we see a great selection of studded and non-studded tires. The first piece of advice is to take your time and don't buy what the managers of tire supermarkets are very fond of advising. As a rule, in 99% of cases they are guided by their own interests, and do not want to make your car operation safer, while saving your budget as much as possible. First, let's deal with one of the most pressing issues of mankind:

What to choose for grants: Velcro or spikes?

In fact, if you are looking for a clear and definite answer for yourself, you will not find it here either. It does not exist in nature in principle. You should choose between spikes and Velcro according to this principle: if your settlement has more ice in winter than asphalt and snow porridge, then your choice is in favor of spikes. However, in most of the territory of Russia, the roads are relish fertilized with reagents and there is no ice on them. And on such asphalt, Velcro tires will show the best handling, braking and acceleration characteristics. Why are they bad? It's actually easy to guess. On any climb, well-flavored with morning ice, such tires can be useless - you simply cannot climb it. Spikes in this respect provide clear advantages. But they lose on asphalt with reagents and slush. So what to choose: a little better handling on asphalt roads and the inability to climb even a simple icy hill, or a little less stable handling, but confidence in conquering any ice obstacles? In my opinion, the answer is obvious. Handling in winter does not manifest itself that way, because any adequate driver does not make sharp maneuvers and on any rubber it is easy to control the car, whether it is rubber with spikes or Velcro. But often only spikes help to climb the ice surface, digging into the ice and preventing excessive slippage. But in any case, the choice is yours.

Now a few words about choosing a brand of winter tires on a grant. Personally, I have traveled in my life on four brands of car winter tires. I will list them: Nokian Nordman4, Pirelli, Nokian Hakkapeliitta5 and Gislaved Nord Frost5. In fact, the listed brands are one of the most common in stores, and hence the operation of motorists. Therefore, you can safely take one of these brands and be sure that they will not let you down in winter. But each of them has a number of features. The quietest brand of the presented is Gislaved Nord Frost 5. The noise is so insignificant that you get used to it in the first 10 minutes of driving. The Pirellis excel at paddling in the snow. Easily drove her out of the snowdrifts. The Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5 has an impeccable grip on almost any surface, the Nokian Nordman 4 does not stand out from all four and in my subjective rating quietly rests in fourth place. What brand of tires to choose for you - decide based on the tasks that you are going to solve on the car. If your credo is a track, I recommend hakkapelita, but if you spend 90% in the city - gislaved 5 or pirelli, if you want to save on a couple of sausage sandwiches - take a nordman. And good luck on the roads, be careful in winter!
