Coolant antifreeze 40 specifications. Antifreeze A40m - how it works

Antifreeze A-40M is one of the most popular varieties of domestic refrigerants. In addition to its direct functions, this type of coolant is able to protect the elements of the car's cooling system from corrosion and wear. This makes the fluid an indispensable tool for any responsible driver.

  1. The composition and characteristics of the coolant
  2. Where and when GOST allows the use of Antifreeze
  3. How does temperature affect refrigerant performance?

1 Composition and characteristics of the coolant

Antifreeze A-40M was developed in 1970 by Soviet specialists who were tasked to create a refrigerant that could compete on equal terms with imported counterparts. Together with the liquid, GOST was established, which regulated the composition, density and areas of its application. The first letters in the name of the coolant indicate that the coolant formula was developed in the organic synthesis department. The last letters mean that the product belongs to the group of alcohols. The letter "A" indicates the ability to use refrigerant in cars. The number "40" indicates the freezing point of the refrigerant, and the letter "M" indicates that the formula of the product has been modified.

The composition of Tosol is based on glycol alcohol. To ensure the technical characteristics and density of the refrigerant, 10 anti-corrosion and anti-foam components have been added to its composition. The absence of at least one of them completely changes the quality and shelf life of the coolant.

Imported refrigerant is odorless, colorless and sweet in taste. In contrast, Tosol has a green or blue color, and this liquid is extremely poisonous. Therefore, if the refrigerant gets on the skin, then it must be washed off with plenty of water and soap.

Tosol has the following technical characteristics:

  • freezing temperature not less than -40 ˚C;
  • boiling point not higher than 108 ˚C;
  • the refrigerant does not foam;
  • does not damage the elements of the car cooling system:
  • chemically stable at all stages of storage and operation up to the expiration date:
  • differs in low viscosity;
  • has the optimum density.

Imported analogues of coolants are very different from Tosol in their composition and characteristics. In this regard, it is categorically not recommended to mix foreign and domestic antifreeze, so as not to disrupt the cooling system of the machine and not disable its sensors.

2 Where and when GOST allows the use of antifreeze

The density and composition of the refrigerant allows it to be used not only for cooling automobile engines, but also for other heat exchange systems within the boiling point of Tosol. This, by the way, is clearly indicated in the conclusions of GOST 28084-89, where there is permission to use domestic refrigerant for cooling machines in plants and factories that are not engaged in the production of flammable substances. Gost documents also indicate that Antifreeze should be used exclusively in accordance with its expiration dates, as well as taking into account the boiling and freezing temperatures of the refrigerant.

If we consider the use of fluid exclusively for cars, then it is worth considering the nuances that are also clearly formulated in the state standards. The first nuance is the need to constantly monitor the amount of refrigerant in the expansion tank of the machine. If the amount of water has evaporated, then it can be topped up. If Tosol leaves through the holes formed, then the malfunction must be eliminated and the lost amount of coolant must be added. This and the possibility of getting a fine for a refrigerant leak is also clearly indicated in the GOST standards. In order not to have to pay a fine, it is better to check the car in a service station before a scheduled inspection of the DAI.

The gost document on the rules for the use of Tosol in cars indicates the timing of the replacement of the refrigerant. According to the regulations, the fluid must be changed every 50-60 thousand km. In case of irregular use of a car, GOST forces to change the cooling composition at least once every 2 years. The list of recommendations attached to the GOST standard also states that with the regular use of Tosol earlier, it is necessary to use it in the future. If the driver wants to change the brand of refrigerant, the car's cooling system must be flushed.

3 How temperature affects refrigerant performance

Unlike a wide selection of imported antifreezes, produced with narrow boiling and freezing point ranges, there is only one domestic refrigerant. However, due to its optimal composition and density, Tosol is able to work effectively at high and low temperatures, which makes it universal in the antifreeze rating table.

So, many imported refrigerants with a freezing point of -35 ˚C begin to crust already at -30 degrees. And those antifreezes, on the packaging of which the boiling point of +80 ˚C is indicated, rapidly boil at 70 degrees above zero. This is due to the fact that imported refrigerants are simply not designed to work in extreme conditions. In contrast, Tosol perfectly performs its task in a clear range from -40 to 108 ˚C.

The main component of the cooling system of a car or other vehicle is antifreeze. It is considered one of the most common types of antifreeze, so when buying it is very important to pay attention to its characteristics. The main factor can be antifreeze density, which affects the principles of engine operation.

Antifreeze in the cooling system not only protects the engine from overheating, but also performs the function of heating the interior of the car. Therefore, the liquid that cools the motor must have the appropriate properties, in particular, density. It also affects the crystallization temperature of the substance.

Methods and means of measurement

Many drivers use antifreeze due to its property not to freeze at low temperatures. This advantage allows you to use it even in the most severe frosts. But such a liquid has a certain period of operation and this depends on its density, the low level of which, after prolonged use, affects the frost resistance of antifreeze.

To measure the density of the coolant, you need to use a hydrometer (another name is a densimeter). This device, together with a conventional thermometer, will be able to set certain indicators of antifreeze in your engine.

This procedure has several stages:

  • the engine temperature should be no more than 20 degrees (it can be measured with an ordinary thermometer);
  • open the radiator or expansion tank to collect fluid;
  • dial a certain amount of substance with a hydrometer;
  • put the device vertically to measure the concentration of antifreeze;
  • compare the readings of the hydrometer with those indicated on the package.

Reasons for verification

The density of antifreeze deteriorates after it has been used for a long time. This adversely affects the safety of the cooling system. The maximum temperature that antifreeze “withstands” is -40 degrees and then its density does not exceed 1.075 g / cm³. If the degree is higher, then the liquid freezes and its properties deteriorate..

The characteristics of a substance also depend on its composition. It consists of ethylene glycol, water and additives. The ratios of these ingredients and their properties directly affect the density of antifreeze and the period of its use.

Changing the characteristics of the cooler leads to unsatisfactory operation of the engine and its systems. That's why need regular checking for substance density, which cools the engine, and your car will avoid damage and repair.

Antifreeze Data

The density table of antifreeze displays the indicators of the coolant with respect to freezing point, crystallization, glycol content in the volume and its amount in the composition. This information will help you choose the antifreeze that suits your car for the freezing point in the system that cools the engine.

Antifreeze brand A

Antifreeze A40 is considered the most popular antifreeze. It has a number of technical characteristics, thanks to which the engine cooling system does its job perfectly:

    low freezing point;

    lack of reaction after contact with engine parts;

    high thermal conductivity;

    good properties of storage and use.

The above data also include excellent lubricating properties and a low level of viscosity. The density of antifreeze a 40 also has acceptable indicators relative to the freezing point of the liquid, which makes it one of the best antifreezes.

Figures and facts

The indicators that determine the concentration of the coolant do not exceed 1.075 g / cm3, although according to GOST they are kept within 1.065-1.085 g / cm3. This information applies to almost all antifreezes. With such a density of antifreeze freezing temperature is not more than -40 degrees.

The determination of the crystallization indices of a substance depends on many factors. One of them is the density, which is measured using a hydrometer. But some instruments are erroneously made with the antifreeze crystallization scale, so it is important to buy the right measuring instruments for optimal study of the engine cooling system.

Tosol A40M is a liquid with special properties - this liquid perfectly resists low temperatures and has the ability to maintain a liquid state at temperatures below zero. Antifreeze of this type is concentrated ethylene glycol, which is processed with special additives during the production process. It is formulated with anti-foam additives and anti-corrosion additives to provide long fluid life. Outwardly, standard type antifreeze looks like a transparent liquid with a homogeneous structure. It has a blue color and does not have any mechanical impurities.

The choice of such a catchy color for this liquid is determined by the fact that in difficult conditions it is sometimes necessary to check a clear level of coolant in a special tank. Also, streaks of this color can be easily distinguished from any other formations, because the units often use a large number of a wide variety of operating fluids. It is the blue color of Tosol that will allow you to successfully analyze the state of the system in difficult conditions.

Scope of Antifreeze A40M

Tosol A 40, as a rule, is used in specialized cooling systems in internal combustion engines at ambient temperatures below 40 degrees Celsius. Tosol can also be used as a working fluid in many other heat exchange systems that operate at low and moderate ambient temperatures.
