For such a long period, the car was updated only twice (in 2006 and 2012), and even then only in minor details. So the fans of the model were waiting for the release of the “fourth” Suzuki Jimny with great impatience, and now they have the opportunity to evaluate the improvements made.
I immediately wanted to reassure those who feared that after the change of generations, Jimny would lose its valuable off-road qualities and cease to be the honest all-terrainer that it was from the very moment of its appearance. So, this did not happen, and even more than that, in terms of technology, the newcomer inherited a lot from his predecessor. For example, the new 2018-2019 Suzuki Jimny got a body with a ladder-type frame, spring-loaded solid axles front and rear, a hard-wired all-wheel drive with a transfer case and a reduction gear. At the same time, the Japanese SUV acquired not only a new 1.5-liter engine with a return of 102 hp, but also more advanced electronic equipment, which made the car much more comfortable and safer than it was before.
At home, Jimny, in addition to the version with a 1.5-liter engine, is also offered in a modification with a small-capacity 660-cc unit with a capacity of 64 hp. Such an option in Japan is simply called Suzuki Jimny, while the “older” version is called Jimny Sierra. We will talk about the second version, because it is she who will be exported, including to Russia. The new Suzuki will reach us around the beginning of 2019, and the base cost of the model will be about 1.2 million rubles (the price for the current Jimny starts at 1,175,000 rubles). In the Japanese market, the price of the new generation Suzuki Jimny starts at 1,760,400 yen (about 1 million rubles).
A different vision of familiar forms
The first major upgrade in the last two decades did not greatly affect the external dimensions of the Suzuki Jimny. The SUV is 50mm shorter, 45mm wider and 20mm taller. After all the edits, the dimensions of the car body look like this: length - 3645 (excluding the spare wheel on the trunk lid - 3480 mm), width - 1645 mm, height - 1725 mm, wheelbase - 2250 mm. Suzuki's designers decided to stay true to the signature styling line, giving the new model the same boxy shapes that were characteristic of the previous car. However, many body elements were revised - there were other grilles, bumpers, rear-view mirrors. The headlights, although they remained round, have acquired modern LED content.

- a small, ergonomically uncomfortable trunk with a volume of 85.0 liters (decreased by 25.0 liters compared to the previous generation), with the rear seats folded down, its volume increases to 377 liters, which is 53 liters more than in the third generation;
- poor finishes made of cheap, creaky plastic;
- Spartan equipment by modern standards.
The instrument panel houses a mechanical speedometer with a tachometer, and there are no buttons or joysticks on the leatherette-covered steering wheel. But this is only the beginning of disappointment, since the LCD monitor on the center panel is not touch-sensitive - the car's meager capabilities are controlled by buttons and switches.
In this interior, the automatic transmission, the storage box located between the front seats, and the aluminum trim of the instruments really look luxurious.
What cannot be taken away from the Suzuki Jimny 4 is the excellent all-round visibility, which is provided by extensive glazing. But this can be considered a plus very conditionally, because many classmates of the “Japanese” are equipped with at least rear-view cameras. In general, the Spartan interior of the SUV has not changed much.

For many years, the main Jimny engine in Russia (and not only) has been a 1.3-liter gasoline power unit with an output of 84 hp and a torque of 110 Nm. Despite numerous updates, the motor does not shine with dynamics. A five-speed manual transmission accelerates the car to 100 km/h in 14.0 seconds, and a four-speed automatic in 17.0 seconds. The maximum speed is only 140 km/h. The volume of the tank is 40.0 liters.
Fuel consumption does not meet modern class standards. In the city, the car consumes 9.5 liters per 100 km, on the highway - 6.8 liters, and in mixed mode this figure is 8.1 liters.
And how is the "Japanese" on the go?
The Jimny is still extremely disappointing on the track. You need to prepare for an uncomfortable ride everywhere except glass-smooth surfaces. The car is extremely insecure on winding sections of the road.
But the Jimny does a great job of off-roading, which will be difficult for most "full" off-road vehicles. This is due to the impressive ground clearance, short overhangs, as well as good traction provided by the all-wheel drive system. Both domestic and foreign experts agree on this.
On seemingly even asphalt, the suspension manages to find flaws, which is immediately reported to the driver through the steering. This is also a problem, because after 80 km / h it requires the driver's utmost attention and ability to control the situation. Therefore, it is not recommended to overtake on the "Japanese". On the positive side, the brake pedal has a long stroke, which allows you to calculate the force with the accuracy of the electronic system. Otherwise, the new generation is practically no different from the previous one, which experts described as “raw” and “noisy” in terms of driving characteristics.
What is the secret of Jimny's many years of success?
The new generation of the compact SUV is still sold only at home and, in terms of our money, is estimated at between 1,025,000 and 1,130,000 rubles. For this money, the potential owner will receive only an updated design with the old Spartan technical stuffing and specific driving characteristics.
On the track, he feels insecure, and the impressive cross-country ability cannot be fully used due to the lack of space. A small trunk does not allow you to go on long trips, except to go fishing with an overnight stay.
At the same time, they are not going to withdraw the car from the market and predict stable sales of the new generation. The creators of the iconic model claim that the SUV has a target audience - fans, so leaving is out of the question. The car is in demand in its homeland, picky Europeans also buy it.
The reasons for success are to be found in the traditional Japanese reliability and promoted brand, which plays an important role in marketing and influencing the consumer's mind.
By and large, if you need decent cross-country ability at a bargain price, then you should consider Dacia Duster or Fiat Panda 4×4. Whether these 4 generation Suzuki Jimny cars will be moved and whether the time-tested, but outdated technical concept will be successful in the modern market, only time will tell.
