The VAZ-2109 car was equipped with three power units with a volume of 1.1, 1.3 or 1.5 liters. With the exception of the working volume and, accordingly, the height, the motors of the "nine" otherwise do not differ from each other. Initially, all installed engines were carbureted, and only at the beginning of the 2000s, the manufacturer began to equip cars with injection engines. Below, the device of the “nine” engine will be considered using the example of a 1.5-liter injection engine VAZ-2111, it was also installed on the VAZ-2110 and 2114 of the early years of production.

Crankshaft

The crankshaft is located at the bottom of the block and rotates on five main bearings with removable covers, which are bolted to the block. The covers are not interchangeable and are marked with risks on the outside. The middle support of the main bearing has sockets in which support half rings are installed, excluding axial displacement of the crankshaft. The front half ring is made of an alloy of steel and aluminum, the rear half ring is made of cermet. If the crankshaft backlash appears, the half rings must be replaced.

Bearing shells - support and connecting rod - thin-walled, made of steel-aluminum alloy. On the inside of all upper main bearings, with the exception of the third bearing bearing, there are grooves.

The device of the crank (engine crankshaft) is as follows: it is cast iron, has four connecting rod and five main journals. Eight counterweights are cast along with the shaft. Channels are drilled inside the shaft, closed with plugs and having a dual purpose:

  1. oil is supplied through them to the connecting rod journals from the main ones;
  2. they purify the oil, since all mechanical impurities not retained by the filter are thrown to the plugs by centrifugal force.

The latter circumstance must be taken into account when overhauling the engine, and when removing the crankshaft, and especially when balancing, it is necessary to clean the channels from accumulated deposits. Plugs after cleaning are replaced with new ones.

A camshaft drive pulley is attached to the front of the crankshaft, and a generator drive pulley is attached to it, which also works as a damping device, thanks to an elastic element between the outer and inner parts of the pulley. A cast-iron flywheel is attached to the rear end with six bolts. It has a ring gear designed to start the engine with a starter. In addition, on its surface there is a conical hole-mark, designed to determine the TDC after the engine is assembled.

Piston group

Connecting rods are made of steel, have a two-tee section. The caps are machined with the cranks and therefore are not interchangeable. The cylinder number is stamped on them and on the connecting rods.

Piston pins are steel tubes. They float freely in the piston bosses, in which they are fixed with retaining rings.

Piston device: pistons are made of aluminum alloy, have three grooves in the upper part for piston rings. The set of rings for each piston consists of two compression rings and one oil scraper. Compression rings do not allow gases to enter the engine crankcase, and the oil scraper removes oil from the cylinder walls and takes it to the bosses to lubricate the piston pin.

A little lower are the holes for the piston pin (boss). There is a recess in the bottom of the piston designed to prevent the valves from bending in the event of a broken timing belt. In a VAZ-2109 with an engine capacity of 1.3 liters, it is flat, so a broken belt inevitably led to the failure of the entire piston group and gas distribution mechanism, and as a result, to expensive repairs.

Block head and timing device

The head of the block (cylinder head) for all front-wheel drive cars of the VAZ family, whether it be 2109, 2110 or 2114, is one, common to all cylinders. They are mounted to the block with ten screws. During installation, a metal gasket is placed under it. This gasket is for single use and must not be reused. There are five camshaft bearings at the top of the cylinder head.

The camshaft of the VAZ-2109 car engine has an index of 21083. Shafts 2110 or 2111 are installed on some engines, their device is somewhat different from 21083, which allows you to get an increase in engine power. The shaft is cast from cast iron, it has five supports and eight cams that open the valves. It is driven by a toothed belt from the crankshaft pulley. You can correctly install the shafts relative to each other using the mounting protrusion on the rear timing belt cover and the marks on the drive gears and flywheel.

Seats are pressed into the cylinder head, and the same valve guides. On the inside of the bushings there are grooves for supplying lubrication, the top of the bushings are closed with oil seals.

Valves are made of steel, and the inlet head is made of heat-resistant. They are mounted obliquely in one row. The intake valve is larger than the exhaust valve. The clearances between the valves and the camshaft cams are adjusted using adjusting washers with increased wear resistance.

The pushers are metal cups moving in the holes in the cylinder head. To improve wear resistance, the surface in contact with the ends of the valve stems is cemented.

Parts lubrication

The lubrication device for the VAZ-2109 (2110) car engine is combined. Oil is supplied under pressure to the main and connecting rod bearings, as well as to the camshaft bearings, cylinders, pistons, pins and rings, camshaft cams and tappets are splash lubricated, all other mating parts are lubricated by gravity.

A gear-type oil pump with a bypass valve is installed at the front of the block. The oil receiver is mounted with bolts on the cover of the second main bearing and the pump housing. The oil filter is non-separable, has bypass and anti-drainage valves. The arrangement of the lubrication system and other engine systems is discussed in detail in separate articles.

Crankcase ventilation is forced, gases are removed through the oil separator.

Before proceeding with the description of the process of refining and increasing the power of the VAZ 2109 carburetor engine, it is worth understanding which power units were installed on the vehicle, and also consider the main technical characteristics.

Tuning: basic description

Tuning a carburetor engine primarily involves boring the cylinder block. This is done in order to increase the combustion chamber, and, accordingly, the pressure inside it.

Also, lightweight parts are installed, which make it possible to reduce the weight of the motor, which will increase acceleration dynamics.

Do-it-yourself tuning of the VAZ 2109 engine begins with the dismantling of the engine from the car. So, you have to turn off the power supply, the ignition system and other systems. So, we will consider all the stages of finalizing the motor on our own. It is impossible to do it completely with your own hands, because you still have to contact a car service at some stages.

Dismantling the motor

To remove the engine, you will have to go through a certain process of disabling and dismantling auxiliary systems. So, let's get straight to the process:

  1. Remove the battery and holding shelf.
  2. We dismantle the air filter and carburetor.
  3. We remove the ignition elements that are located in the engine compartment.
  4. Drain coolant and engine oil.
  5. We unscrew the gearbox from the engine.
  6. We dismantle the radiator to make it easier to remove the motor.
  7. We take out the engine shaft.
  8. Loosen the engine mounts.
  9. Remove the hood and dismantle the engine.

The scheduled process is not complete, but only the main actions that need to be done.

Disassembly of the power unit

Disassembly of the power unit is done in a few hours. So, first you need to dismantle the head cover and the oil pan. It is best to carry out this operation on a special stand.

After that, we begin to remove the main nodes. We unscrew the bolts of the block head and cylinder block. Then, we set the head aside and work directly with the cylinder block. So let's take a look at what needs to be removed:

  1. We unscrew the yoke and take out the crankshaft. We first dismantle the pulley.
  2. We dismantle the water and oil pump.
  3. We take out the piston group. We dismantle the rods. If there is, you need to remove the sleeves.
  4. Now, the block is ready for further manipulations.
  5. The last step is washing the parts and the block.

When the block is disassembled, you can proceed to disassemble the cylinder head.

  1. Remove the camshaft cover.
  2. We remove the distributor.
  3. We loosen the valves.
  4. Remove springs and seals.
  5. Take out the valves.
  6. We knock out the saddle and guide bushings from the head.
  7. We carry out washing of parts and the base of the head.

Determination of improvement priorities

To increase the power of the VAZ 2109 carburetor engine, you will need to purchase a piston group, valves, camshaft, connecting rods and crankshaft. All these parts must be lightweight and made by tuning manufacturers.

So, the piston group, valves and seats are suitable for ATI. Guide bushings, it is best to install bronze production from the American manufacturer K-line. The crankshaft and camshaft are purchased from the German company TDR.

Working with the cylinder block

To begin with, the cylinder block must be bored out for new pistons, respectively, with a size of 82 mm. Then, the crankshaft and new liners are installed, which come with the main part.

In order for everything to work like clockwork, you need to install a lightweight tuning clutch from Sachs. After the clutch is attached to the shaft, balancing must be done. It is advisable to carry out the operation on a special stand.

We assemble the piston assembly, namely, we attach the pistons to the connecting rods. Then, you can proceed to the so-called "dressing" process. It refers to the fastening of connecting rods with pistons to the crankshaft. We mount oil seals and bearings of the crankshaft. We install the yoke and you can fix the pallet. Then, the remaining auxiliary components are assembled, such as a pulley, a water pump and a roller.

head tuning

Cylinder head tuning is actually the assembly of new parts on old seats. So, the disassembled cylinder head is assembled from the old case and new tuning elements. There is nothing complicated in this process.

Node Assembly

After the main systems and components are assembled, you can proceed directly to the process of assembling the engine together. So, in reverse order, the cylinder head, valve cover, pulleys, timing belt are attached to the cylinder block.

Completion of auxiliary systems

After the main components of the power unit are assembled, you can proceed with the installation of auxiliary systems. So, we install first of all, the fuel injection system. The old Solex carburetor should not be installed, because it will not provide the required amount of fuel to the combustion chambers. Therefore, it is necessary to find an improved Solex Mega-2 carburetor or the Czech version - IKOV.

The ignition system needs to be improved. Instead of standard candles, it is worth installing Brisk spark plugs marked A2. Also, the standard high-voltage wires are changed to a tuning version made by Tesla.

Do not forget about the cooling system, since an increased number of revolutions of the crankshaft will speed up all processes, and, accordingly, increased heat emission. Therefore, a kit of a cooling system is installed on the VAZ 2109, which includes: silicone pipes, a sports pump and a two-chamber thermostat. Also, it is recommended to install a sports radiator made of aluminum. This will lighten the weight of the car by several kilograms.

The last refinement is the installation of an air filter of "zero" resistance. The installation of this unit is quite simple, on the standard fasteners of the old “air” case. The air intake is removed so that there is a direct air supply.

Also, in addition to standard improvements, an air blower can be installed on the engine. Of course, such a refinement wears out the motor elements faster, so it is recommended to install a “snail”.

After carrying out all the improvements, the engine is installed on the vehicle, and the run-in and adjustment is carried out.

Conclusion

Tuning the engine VAZ 2109 carburetor can be done independently in the garage. The revision described in the article is carried out in a month and its cost, if you buy new parts, will cost about 4000-5000 dollars. Of course, such a refinement is not economically feasible, but there are motorists who carry out this type of tuning.

Removing the engine VAZ 2109

Before removing the engine, disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery. Drain the coolant from the cooling system, engine oil and gearbox oil. It is recommended to dismantle the VAZ 2109 engine assembled with the gearbox and using a lift to remove it down.

Installing the engine on the VAZ 2109

The installation of the VAZ 2109 engine is carried out in the reverse order of its removal. When connecting the front wheel drives to the gearbox, replace the circlips on the splined shank of the inner joints. Do not install used circlips on the splined shanks of the pivots as this may cause the front wheel drives to disengage from the transmission while driving. After installing the engine on the car, adjust the carburetor air and throttle actuators, the clutch actuator, as well as the angles of the front wheels.

Fill in the coolant of the cooling system, engine oil and gearbox oil.

VAZ 2109 (Lada Samara), popularly called nine, is a five-door hatchback, the successor to the Samara line. It was developed in 1987 based on the three-door hatchback VAZ 2108. The very same nine became the basis for the creation of the VAZ 21099.

The car gained wide popularity due to its fast-paced design, good engines for those times, as well as a practical five-door body. All this, multiplied by the low cost, as well as a wide selection of spare parts, made the VAZ 2109 very attractive. This attractiveness was transferred to its follower VAZ 2114. In contrast to the eight, the injector was installed serially on the 2109 engines (power unit 2111).

ENGINE DEFECTS

In terms of cons, the following are most often noted. The parts of the cooling system wear out pretty quickly. Frequent oil filter changes and valve adjustments will be required. Oil leaks often occur due to unreliable sealing of the valve cover, fuel pump and distribution sensor. It should be noted unreliable Solex carburetors in general, and EPHX in particular.

If the timing belt breaks, the valves can bend. Also, over time, problems with ignition and engine tripping may occur. In addition, due to problems with ignition, the engine may detonate. Another reason for this may be low-octane low-quality fuel. Detonation is indicated by black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe and loss of power.

ENGINE VAZ 21081

Engine VAZ 21081 1.1 l. is an analogue of the power unit 2108 1.3. However, it has a crankshaft with a smaller stroke, and as a result, reduced traction. This is an in-line carburetor-type engine with four cylinders, having an overhead camshaft, and a timing belt. As for the resource, by ensuring accurate operation and quality service, you can count on the official 125 thousand km.

The difference between 21081 and 2108 is due to the reduced piston stroke and consequently reduced displacement. In addition, the difference is in a lower cylinder block compared to 2108.

ENGINE DEFECTS

The VAZ 081 engine is rare, since such engines were exported. This is probably for the best, since it is frankly a frail unit. It should also be remembered that if the timing belt breaks, the engine can bend the valves. ENGINE VAZ 21083 This engine is the progenitor of the current power units for Lada, it became the basis for 16 valve engines 2112, 124, 126 for Priora, 127, 114, 116, 194 for Kalina.

This engine was replaced by this version of the injection type. VAZ 2108 1.5 l. is an in-line carburetor-type engine with four cylinders and an overhead camshaft. The timing drive uses a belt, if it breaks, the valve engine does not bend.

The VAZ 2111 engine, which is popularly referred to as 2114, is generally the eighty-third engine. However, unlike 21083, 2114 uses an injector, not a carburetor. In addition, the 2114 is characterized by the presence of a floating connecting rod pin and a different camshaft. Finally, 2114 has more power. Engine VAZ 2114 1.5 liters. in-line, injection, with four cylinders, has an overhead camshaft, a belt is used in the timing drive. At the same time, when the belt breaks, the valve engine does not bend.

ENGINE DEFECTS

In terms of shortcomings, the following are noted. It is necessary to adjust the valves, parts of the cooling system wear out quickly, frequent replacement of the oil filter is required, problems with the valve cover seal, fuel pump and distribution sensor.
