SUVs are not afraid of mud, rain and snow. Their owners call the road any place where they plan to drive. This is because they have excellent cross-country ability due to high ground clearance, as well as a solid distance between the body (frame) and the ground.

This is probably why in our country, where roads are one of the troubles, there are so many of these attractive cars with impressive dimensions. As already noted, SUVs are body and frame.

What is the difference between body and frame SUVs?

In body models, the role of the supporting element is performed, which is clear from the name, the body. And the design feature of frame SUVs is due to the presence of a special frame. This is the skeleton of the car, its carrier system, on which the most important units (engine, axles, transmission, suspension) and the body are attached.

At the same time, the chassis, which is a combination of the listed units in a single design, can move independently of the body.

There are several types of frames:

  • ladder (or spar);
  • peripheral;
  • spinal;
  • X-shaped (or forked-spine);
  • bearing base;
  • lattice (sometimes tubular and spatial).

The most popular are spar frames. These are the ones most often used by designers. Such frames are made of beams that have a section with reinforcements in areas subjected to maximum loads. Frame parts are connected by welding, rivets or special bolts.

What are the advantages of the frame structure of an SUV

The number of positive moments is quite large. We refer to them as follows:

1) when traveling, passengers experience greater comfort than in other cars, since vibrations and unpleasant sounds are less transmitted to the body from tires and units;

2) the chassis of frame SUVs has an increased resource. Accordingly, the machine is more durable;

3) when passing off-road, the loads are evenly distributed on the frame and body, so the car does not experience rolls;

4) since such machines are usually equipped with engines with large volume, power and torque, they are able not to fail even in the most difficult conditions without overloading;

5) the frame structure of the SUV makes the process of assembling the car within the walls of the factory easier. The units are mounted on the frame, trim and interior are installed in the body. That is, separate work is performed. When assembling body models, experts several times shift the structure to one side and back;

6) independent frame makes it possible to modify the body. That is, you can change the design or create several modifications based on the same chassis. (By the way, this was the trend that prevailed in the United States of America until the 1980s);

7) frame SUVs are allowed to be lifted. That is, wheels of a slightly larger diameter can be installed on them in order to increase ground clearance and, as a result, patency. This event is associated with changes in the design of the machine, but this does not affect the main indicators.

Repair features

Repair sooner or later threatens every car. However, experts note that frame deformations, the presence of cracks and corrosion are quite rare phenomena. They can appear only as a result of a terrible accident or with too careless operation of frame SUVs.

Since the frame has a simple design, during the repair it is possible to get to the chassis parts without any problems. If a body repair is planned, which has become a consequence, then the work process will be easier than in the case of a monocoque body.

All panels, which are complex, are not load-bearing in a frame body; important units are not attached to them. During their restoration, there is no need to strictly observe dimensional tolerances. Replacing or restoring such a frame takes less time and requires less spending. We can assume that this circumstance is a serious advantage of a frame SUV.

Their shortcomings

As they say, the coin has two sides. And framed SUVs are no exception. They also have some disadvantages (in comparison with body "brothers"):

  • Firstly, they have a significantly increased mass, since the frames are created from beams of a closed section. Handling a heavy vehicle is complicated by such moments as a high center of gravity and mutually directed deformation of the frame and body. In this regard, the frame structure is inferior in terms of resistance to twisting of the structure to cars, where the role of the supporting element is performed by the body.
  • Secondly, frame SUVs need more fuel.
  • Thirdly, the useful volume of the cabin is reduced.
  • Fourthly, the machines under consideration are characterized by the worst indicators of passive safety, which is due to the possibility of displacement of the body in relation to the frame and the complexity of determining deformation zones.

Despite the presence of shortcomings, frame SUVs are purchased not only by lovers of extreme sports, fishermen and hunters. They are also preferred: from respectable men to fragile women.

What is the phenomenon of frame SUVs

The first and most basic thing that gives the possession of a large frame machine, a sense of security. A good overview eliminates emergency situations. For example, it is immediately clear whether the car will pass into some kind of gap or not, since the front dimensions are visible to the driver.

In turn, large wheels help to comfortably drive through potholes or cut sections of asphalt, and a high clearance does not allow you to run into curbs. When the driver feels safe, his behavior on the road becomes more calm, and his actions are considered.

As we managed to find out, frame SUVs have a whole range of differences from cars with a body structure. One group of differences can be classified as advantages, the other - as disadvantages. Which bowl of scales outweighs, it is up to each motorist to decide.

Despite the systematic decrease in the share of frame cars in the SUV segment and the focus of manufacturers on semi-supporting and load-bearing bodies, the number of motorists whose hearts are forever given to the “frame” is not decreasing.

Such machines are solidly called "eternal". And in this definition there is some truth, because frame SUVs, whose life span has crossed the border of 10-15 years, look much more attractive than their other cars of the same age.

The bearing part is one of the most important components in the device of the car, because it is thanks to it that it is possible to assemble all the components of the car into a single whole.

Now several types of bearing parts are used, each of which has found application on certain types of cars. Initially, all cars were built on the basis of a frame bearing part. But over time, it was replaced by other types, for example, it is used on almost all passenger cars, in which there is no frame, and all its functions are performed by a reinforced body. And yet, the frame bearing part continues to be used - on trucks and SUVs.

Purpose, types

The frame of the car is a beam structure, which acts as the basis for attaching all the components of the car - the power plant, transmission units, chassis and other things. The body, present in the design of the bearing part, performs only some functions - it provides space for passengers and cargo, and also acts as a decorative element.

The main positive quality of using the frame is the high strength of the bearing part. It is thanks to this that it is used on trucks and full-fledged SUVs. But at the same time, because of the frame, the total mass of the car is increased.

Also, the frame of the car allows you to unify the nodes and mechanisms between models of different classes to the maximum. At one time, it came to the point that many automakers produced a car chassis with all the main parts (frames, engines, transmissions, chassis), on which different types of bodies were “stretched”.

At the same time, several types of frames were developed, each of which has its own design features. All of them can be divided into:

  1. Spar
  2. Spinal
  3. Spatial

Some of these types have subspecies, and combined types are also often used, in the design of which there are constituent elements of different frames.

Spar and its subspecies

The spar frame of the car is the most common. Its design includes two longitudinal power beams - spars, stretching along the entire body and interconnected by crossbars.

The spars themselves are made of steel, and to ensure high torsional performance, different types of section profile are used - a box, an I-beam, a channel.

Moreover, it is not necessary that they be even, many spars have bends in both the vertical and horizontal planes. For example, on some cars, the frame is curved in the front and rear parts (in the area where the wheels are located), which allows you to move the center of gravity down.

In addition, the spars are placed both in a strictly horizontal position relative to the floor, and can be at an angle. The second option is used on SUVs.

The spars are connected by crossbars, which can be located in different ways. In the so-called ladder-type frame, the crossbars are attached perpendicular to the spars (considered classic). But there are also designs in which these components are located at angles - K-shaped and X-shaped frames.

To connect the spars with the crossbars, welding is used (in off-road vehicles), rivets (trucks). In some cases, bolted connections are used. For fastening the nodes of the car, both the side members and the cross members are equipped with brackets.

A subspecies of the spar frame is peripheral. Its distinctive feature is the large distance between the spars. After the car is fully assembled, they are located near the body sills, which significantly increases the resistance to side impacts, and also allows you to lower the floor level (as far as possible).

Another type of spar frame is the X-shaped. The essence of the design of such a frame is that the spars are separated in the front and rear parts, and in the central part they are reduced to the maximum (the space between them allows only the transmission shafts to be placed). Outwardly, this type resembles the letter "X", hence the name.

Another option is a supporting base. The design of this frame still uses longitudinal spars, but here they are interconnected not by crossbars, but by the bottom. At the same time, the supporting base, although the bottom is included in it, is not an element of the body, therefore this type belongs to the frames.

Backbone-type frames are less common and, in fact, they are used only on Tatra trucks. The main component of this type of bearing part is a central beam made of a pipe.

It is noteworthy that in such a frame, some auto components are used as load-bearing elements, namely the engine, gearbox, final drive housings. All of them are interconnected by a central beam, while rotation between the nodes is carried out using shafts located in the pipe.

The design feature of the rear drive axles is that the transmission of rotation to the wheels is carried out by shafts with cardan joints, and not by axle shafts, since the main gear cases are rigidly attached to the beam. But such a device, in turn, makes it possible to install a car on all wheels.

The main advantages of this type of frame include high torsional stability and the possibility of relatively simple creation of multi-axle chassis. To do this, you just need to add the required number of main gears and connect them using the central beam.

But this car frame was not widely used due to the complexity of servicing and repairing transmission units, since for this it is necessary to disassemble almost the entire frame in order to disconnect the main gear housings and the gearbox. In addition, the body, fixed on the pipe, is located quite high above the ground. Therefore, this type of frame is only suitable for use on trucks.

Spatial is the frame of the car, presented in the form of a frame welded from pipes. Differs in the small weight and high rates on durability.

This frame forms not only compartments for placing and fixing the components of the car, but also a cabin for passengers. In addition, the frame also plays the role of a body, which is simply absent in a car with such a frame, and the decorative trim is fixed directly to the composite pipes.

Such a frame has found application on sports cars, as well as home-made models - buggies. It is noteworthy that even on mass cars with a monocoque body, which are remade for participation in competitions, they are equipped with an internal tubular frame to increase body rigidity. But in this case, the installed frame cannot be called a full-fledged spatial frame.

The main types of frame bearing parts are listed above. But, as noted, there are many variations that are combined types.

These include a fork frame. In this type, there are the main components of the spar and spinal types - the central beam and spars. The design looks like this: in the front and rear parts, longitudinal spars are used to fasten the auto components, and a pipe is installed in the central part (but here it is not used to accommodate drive shafts). The beam and spars are rigidly connected to each other.

But there are also options that combine different types of load-bearing part - a frame and a load-bearing body. This type includes the so-called integrated frame. Its essence boils down to the fact that the elements of the frame (spar classical or peripheral) are included in the body structure and are made integral with it (they are rigidly connected to each other). But it is worth noting that the spars are usually located only in the front and are designed to fix the power plant.

Another option for combined load-bearing parts is a body with a subframe. This element performs the same functions as the side members in the integrated version, but unlike it, it is attached to the body using bolted connections.

Finally, we note that although the frame is used only on cars of certain classes, the elements included in the design are used quite widely even now, since they increase the rigidity of the load-bearing bodies. In almost any passenger car, you can find reinforcing spars or subframes.

There are two types of automobile chassis: a running gear combined with a load-bearing body, or a frame structure. In the first case, all components and assemblies are attached directly to the machine body. The second option is when the chassis, engine and transmission are mounted on the frame, and the body is "put on" from above. Both options have their advantages, the case version is more technologically advanced from the point of view of conveyor assembly. The spar frame requires preparatory work before installation, but during operation its design is more reliable.

Frame or monocoque - which is better?

The frame is used in the manufacture of vehicles, the operation of which involves increased loads and a non-stop work cycle. These are trucks, buses, military jeeps, extended limousines and Cadillacs. The category of vehicles experiencing high dynamic loads also includes frame SUVs, a list of which is given below. The monocoque carrier body is used in all other cases.

What is the frame made of?

The design of an all-metal frame as the basis for mounting individual units is quite complicated. This is a combination of seamless and forged profiles, transverse and longitudinal. Their relationship is calculated in advance, and the result is a solid structure that can withstand significant loads. When assembling, all the advantages of the frame go to the car. And the best example of the use of a reliable profiled design are frame SUVs. The list of advantages of such machines includes high strength characteristics, wear resistance, passive safety in case of minor accidents.

Popularity and application

Frame structures became widespread in the United States during the automobile boom of the 60s. Manufacturers sought to create new models by changing the exterior of the body, without touching the chassis of the car. The frame provided just such an opportunity. Dozens of models were assembled on the same chassis. Then the term body-on-frame even came into use, meaning one hundred percent unification of the running gear of cars. The only condition for connecting the new body to the platform was the complete coincidence of the mounting holes in the frame and body, however, these technological standards were easily observed.

Currently, frame structures are rarely used in the production of passenger cars and only when necessary, for reasons of strength. Variants with a monocoque body are much lighter in weight, more technologically advanced during assembly and have more attractive passive safety parameters in the sense that in a collision the frameless body folds like an accordion and dampens impact inertia. And the frame can cause more tangible damage due to its rigidity. Therefore, when designing, all possible situations were miscalculated.

Overview of SUVs produced today

Currently, almost all leading companies in the global automotive industry produce off-road vehicles on a frame chassis. However, they should not be confused with crossovers, cars of the same off-road class, but without a frame. All crossovers are assembled using a load-bearing body.

The first number of the world ranking in its class is the American Hummer all-terrain vehicle. A powerful car, assembled on a frame chassis, was intended for the US Army, but for various reasons, deliveries to military units have ceased, and the SUV can now be found on the roads of both the USA and Europe, in private use.

Along with the Hammer, the Cadillac Escalade frame SUV is popular in America. This is also a worthy representative in its class.

Off-road model "Acura" is also the dream of many motorists. In Europe, SUVs "Mercedes" and "Audi" compete with each other, "Volkswagen" breathes down their necks. The leading models are not far behind the Romanian "ARO" and the Korean "Rocsta".

The Romanian company ARO, a manufacturer of light trucks and four-wheel drive SUVs, mainly produces cars for the domestic market.

The frame SUV model ARO 244 was put into mass production in 1966 and became a pilot modification for the entire 24th series. The car was produced in two versions: two-door (short base) and five-door (full base). The car did not have a powerful volumetric engine and looked more like an ordinary car with a frame layout of the chassis and engine. The APO 244 engine with a volume of 2495 cc developed a power of 83 hp, which was enough to reach a maximum speed of 120 km/h.

Frame SUV "Asia Roksta" debuted in 1989. The power plant on a medium power machine, 86 hp. with a volume of 1.8 liters. But the car had a very interesting appearance. "Roksta" resembled the legendary American "Willis" of the Second World War. The same unique grille, headlights, front fenders. The car seemed to have stepped out of the picture, reflecting the events at the front.

In 1994, Roxta underwent a deep restyling that changed its exterior and interior. The front end of the car began to resemble the Mitsubishi Pajero of the first issue. The new design was to the taste of consumers, and "Asia Roksta" went into series. At the same time, the previous version also continued to be produced. But in 1998, the frame SUV was discontinued, it was replaced by the new Retona model.

Frame SUVs, the list of which is far from complete in this article, are in moderate but stable demand. Their production is developing, new models appear.

How to put together all the units of a self-running stroller, ensuring their exact relative position under any traffic conditions? The first auto engineers did not think about this for a long time. Everything had already been thought of before them, and the options were before our eyes: either the carrying "body" of the cart and carriage, or the frame structure of a steam locomotive and other railway transport. Then the issue was resolved in favor of frames, and today cars with a traditional frame design are quite rare. Although the elements of the frame scheme are used by most modern serial machines.

What is a frame?

In the general sense, the frame (in the terminology of the first half of the last century - the skeleton) is a pair of spars from a metal profile connected by several crossbars. The frame serves as a base, a power frame, on which the body, power unit, suspension elements, etc. are "hung".

Why did the designers choose the frame?

1. The load-bearing body was either not rigid enough or too heavy - the then low level of technology affected.

An important feature of the frame structure, which is essentially flat, is the low torsional resistance compared to the inherently box-shaped body structure. Throughout the "frame era" this issue was solved in two ways - by increasing the thickness of the metal and the number of crossbars, or by changing the characteristics of the metal itself.

The problem, in principle, turned out to be solvable, especially since low torsion resistance did not always harm cars. So, in the mass Soviet truck ZIS-5, the "elastic" frame ("differences" between diagonally opposite ends of the frame could reach 3-4 cm) significantly increased the cross-country ability of the three-ton truck, not allowing the wheels to hang out on potholes. The loss of contact of the drive axle wheel with the road is fraught with a car stop due to the “leaving” of torque to the raised wheel, so the three-ton ZIS was valued on front-line off-road during the Great Patriotic War.

Now the term "platform" is understood as a certain commonality of the details of two different cars. In the first half of the 20th century, technology literally worked.

Many cars were sold in the form of a chassis - a frame with all the units of the running gear up to the steering wheel and pedals, and the client himself ordered the body to a specialized studio. As a result, the buyer, having enough finances, could afford an absolutely exclusive car with a fully serial aggregate base. Now, unfortunately, this is no longer possible.

Initially, hardwoods were used to make the skeleton, less often metal pipes. In the 1910s, frames with the open profile familiar to us began to be introduced on trucks.

In English terminology, this type of frame is often called a ladder frame because of its resemblance to the object of the same name. Two longitudinal spars are most often made of an open profile. The shape of the cross beams can be different (K-shaped, X-shaped, perpendicular), and frame fragments can be interconnected by welding (mainly cars), rivets (trucks) or even bolts (piece copies).

Today, riveted frames are most often used on pickups and trucks. Some engineers also refer to spar frames as X-shaped frames, which are much lighter (all American classics of the 50s, as well as Soviet "Seagulls" - GAZ-13 and GAZ-14, are built on them). The main advantage of the spar frame is the simplicity of design and manufacturability. The main disadvantages are a lot of weight and bulkiness, which negatively affected the usable space inside the car.

Spinal frames

The history of spinal (central) frames began in the 1920s in the Czech Republic. Designers of Tatra cars were the first to develop and implement a new scheme in their cars. The main structural element is a pipe connecting the rear drive axle housing with the power unit and transmission. Inside this load-bearing pipe is a shaft without a cardan joint, which transmits torque from the engine to the wheels. That is, the connection, unlike all modern rear- and all-wheel drive vehicles, was rigid.

As operating experience has shown, the main advantages of the spinal frame are high torsional rigidity and the ability to easily create multi-axle all-wheel drive structures. The main disadvantage is considered difficult access to the units built into the frame.

Spinal frames were once used on passenger cars, and today they are successfully used just on the city. Suffice it to say that in such a Tatra car, Karel Loprais, speaking in the Paris-Dakar marathon, for 14 years (from 1988 to 2002) became the champion in the truck class six times and won silver four times.

And again the Czech Republic ... Forked-spine frames appeared for the first time before World War II on cars from this country - Skoda and Tatras. Sometimes fork-spine frames are called a type of spinal frames. The main feature of this type is that the front and rear parts are tridents formed by the central tube of the frame and two spars extending from it, which are used to fasten units and assemblies.

Unlike backbone vehicles, fork-framed vehicles use a conventional driveshaft and the axle and engine housings are not integral with the center tube. Bright carriers of this design are the pre-war Tatra-77 and Tatra-87. These were revolutionary comfortable cars for their time: they were distinguished at the same time by an extremely low drag coefficient (0.34) for the 30s of the last century, moderate “appetite” and poor handling caused by the rear-engine layout. Today, fork-back frames are not used in the automotive industry.

Peripheral frames

They are the next stage in the evolution of spar frames and have been widely used on American "dreadnoughts" and large European passenger cars (for example, Opel Admiral) of the first half of the 60s, all Soviet representative limousines were created on the same principle, starting with ZIL-114.

The spars in this design are spaced so widely that when installing the body they are near the very thresholds. The withdrawal of massive frame elements to the sides of the car allowed the designers to significantly lower the floor level in the car and reduce the height of the car itself.

Peripheral frame

The main advantages of the peripheral frame are the high resistance of the structure to side impacts, as well as the best suitability for conveyor assembly. Its main drawback is that such a frame cannot itself take all the loads, so the car body must be more durable, rigid, which affects its weight.

Until recently (until 2012), a comfortable Ford Crown Victoria sedan was produced with this type of frame, which became a symbol of the American taxi and police car of the 1990-2000s. Engineers managed to achieve amazing levels of comfort, including through the use of special rubber dampers through which the body was attached to the frame.

Spatial frames

Spatial or three-dimensional frames first appeared in big motorsport in the 20s of the last century. They were most often created from thin pipes (made using alloyed steels, products from which torsion is unusual).

In general, pipe structures are difficult to withstand bending loads. Therefore, the designers always strived to ensure that the pipes were loaded only in compression or tension, but not "in fracture". Today, in motorsport, space frames have given way to monocoques, but have found a second life in bus construction. By the way, until the early 2000s, all Renault Espace minivans were built precisely on a space frame - the tubular frame was sheathed with body panels. For the sake of safety and cheaper production, this scheme was abandoned.

Bearing bottom

The load-bearing base of the car is an intermediate stage between the frame structure and the load-bearing body. In this version, the frame is combined with the floor of the body. The most massive and most famous owner of the load-bearing bottom is the German Volkswagen Beetle, in which the body was bolted to a flat floor panel. Also, according to a similar principle, another mass car from neighboring France, the Renault 4СV, of a rear-wheel drive layout similar to the Zhuk, was made.

Although her body was already a typical solid-bearing one, she had a full-fledged stretcher in front. Welded into the floor, it looked like two spars stretching from the front bumper to the front passenger footwell. However, the integration of frames into the body of the body (or, if you like, the "fouling" of the body with frame elements) is another topic, which we will devote the next article to.
