The build quality, of course, is decent (except that the cover of the armrest box is slightly loose, but we’ll write it off for this test copy), the door trim is interesting and of high quality, but the plastic in the design of the dashboard and on the steering wheel core is hard.

The red "stripe" of the on-board computer moved here from the "six". It holds a lot of information, but readability is far from perfect; In addition, the screen glare in the sun.

The Bose acoustic system once again pleased with a clear and high-quality sound, and the climate control (only single-zone is available) cooled the air in the cabin to 18°C ​​in a few hours.

Steering - as on the MX-5: with polished "glossy" plastic and a convex core. But honking is inconvenient: you need to put pressure not on the entire bulge, but only on its center. But the seats are good. Although they do not have a sports grip, but the anatomical shape allows you to sit tight and very comfortable. And you don't have to drive!

By the way, the steering wheel here is with a variable force: at low speed it is filled with tangible weight, and at high speed the sharpness subsides and a small backlash appears, which protects against accidental changes in the trajectory. It is worth noting that it will be more difficult for tall people to get comfortable: the column is adjustable only in height.

The CX-7 is slower than the MPS trio. This is not surprising, because the crossover is 150 kg heavier, and the 2.3-liter turbo engine has been derated to 236 hp. with., to digest the 95th gasoline.

If the Mazda3 MPS “didn’t know” what to do with such a “herd”, then the “seven” lacks it a little: acceleration to 100 km / h in less than 8 s is, of course, not bad. But at the same time, the maximum capabilities of the CX-7 are limited to 181 km / h. It will be inconvenient when the baby Corsa or Yaris will bypass you on the German autobahn ...

You need to get used to the “box”: in order for the “automatic” to keep speed, the accelerator has to be sunk into the floor all the way, otherwise the exceptional adaptability will make it switch to a higher one “at the wrong time”. (By the way, it’s easy to navigate here, because even in the “drive” mode, the “automatic” tells you which gear is on).

If he is not properly looked after, then at 90 km / h, or even earlier, he will switch to “sixth” on his own initiative, trying to save fuel. However, if you believe the readings of the flow meter, you can’t save much: the most immodest consumption according to the passport was 15.3 liters (in the urban cycle), and we were shown on the screen, on average, as much as 24.7 liters! I don't want to believe...

In any case, if you are counting on a dynamic ride, you should not trust electronic gear shifting. If you are not lazy and put the gear selector in mechanical mode, the CX-7 appears to be much more sporty than it seemed before ...

Mazda combines successful dynamics with decent behavior where the asphalt ends. All-wheel drive - or rather, front-wheel drive with elements of the full - the crossover inherited from the Mazda6 MPS. As soon as the front wheels “enter” on a slippery surface, the differential will instantly transfer part of the moment to the rear wheels, and they will help the front ones.

Huge clearance (208 mm!) allows you to forget about curbs (or curbs - whatever), but the corners of entry and exit will not let you off-road. But it's easy to go around the traffic jam on the grass!

The base version of the Mazda CX-7 also includes a proprietary all-wheel drive system (Mazda Active Torque Split All-WheelDrive), which prevents the wheels from spinning on slippery surfaces and provides excellent traction on normal roads. Using real-time information from multiple sensors, the system continuously monitors the road and differential usage. In addition to all-wheel drive, the car comes standard with a Traction Control System (TSC) and a Stability Control System (DCS).

The lightweight yet rigid body of the Mazda CX-7 is designed using energy absorption and distribution technology to ensure a safe and dynamic ride. Gorgeous 18-inch 235/60 wheels, on elegant aluminum rims, allow you to feel all the softness of the movement. In 2009, Mazda carried out a restyling and technical update of the CX-7 crossover. The presentation of the updated car for the North American market took place in February 2009 in Toronto. The luggage compartment in the stowed state will fit 455 liters, the trunk is narrow and long with a large loading height, folding seats are designed to increase its volume. The initial equipment of the Mazda CX-7 Touring is quite richly equipped: climate control, central locking, power windows, electric mirrors and heated front seats, trip computer, radio with CD / MP3.

In America, the CX-7 lineup was replenished with an economical new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 161 hp. This engine is suitable for a leisurely driver, for whom sharp acceleration, high-speed taxiing and high maximum speed are far from the first places in the assessment of the car. Acceleration to 100 km / h takes 10.3 seconds. Fans of the drive are more suitable for the 2.3 DISI turbo engine familiar from the previous version with a capacity of 238 hp. The range of power units was also replenished with a 2.2-liter MZR-CD turbodiesel with a power of 170 hp. For the European market only, the vehicle is equipped with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) aftertreatment system. With its help, it is possible to reduce the content of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust by 40%. The engine meets the requirements of the environmental standard Euro 5.

Gearboxes also became one more. In addition to the already familiar six-speed “automatic”, Mazda added a five-speed one to the company. True, a crossover equipped with such a box can only be front-wheel drive and exclusively with a 161-horsepower engine.

The Mazda CX-7 is one of the few models that combines sporty design and driving pleasure with the space and functionality of a true SUV.



Within 4 years after the release, the car did not change, and a number of design changes were made a little later during restyling. But it didn’t become popular enough, it was overtaken in sales by another crossover company of the compact class, the CX5, which appeared later. Therefore, the company decided to withdraw this model from production.

Mazda CX 7 was discontinued in 2012.

Although now it is not produced, this is not a reason not to consider this crossover in more detail, yet it was Mazda's first.

Exterior

To create the CX 7, the designers designed a completely new platform. At the same time, in order to quickly solve design problems, many nodes in the crossover were borrowed from other Mazda models.

Externally, the designers tried to combine the sporty character inherent in all Mazda models with the universal performance of an SUV.

This attempt was successful - neat, with smooth lines of the body and with little or no strong transition from the front of the car to the windshield - CX 7 has a sporty touch in design. A smooth transition is made from the roof to the stern of the crossover.

The front is rounded to the maximum. At the transition from the bumper to the hood housed grille. At the same time, it is not significant in size and is covered with a large-mesh stylistic grid. At some distance from the grille, diamond-shaped headlights were placed on the sides, the corners of which were also rounded.

The main place on the bumper is occupied by a rather large air intake, decorated with a chrome strip at the top. The intake itself is covered with the same mesh as the grate. Three-section stylized niches were installed on the sides. Fog lights are located in the upper section, and the other two sections are reserved for additional air intakes. The bottom of the bumper is decorated with a small skirt with a protective overlay.

The side parts of the car are notable except for the wide chrome edging of the side glazing, a small transitional step in the lower part, and overlays to protect the sills.

The back is pretty interesting. There is a smooth transition from the roof to the almost vertical position of the bottom of the tailgate. The top of the rear window is adorned with a symbolic spoiler.

The bumper protrudes somewhat, but its corners are quite rounded. An interesting solution was the placement of brake light repeaters. They were installed on a protective lining below the bumper, at the level of the exhaust pipes.

Interior

The salon now already looks somewhat outdated, but also unusual. The dashboard is presented in the form of three large wells. The central and left ones are reserved for analog sensors, and the right one is for the on-board computer. At the same time, its display is monochrome.

The body of the center console was set at a slight angle. At the top of it, under the visor, two small displays were placed. One is for navigation, it is in color, the other is for displaying information about the operation of the audio system and the climate system, it is monochrome.

Three deflectors were installed under the displays. Next comes a whole bunch of keys that control the climate and audio system. The central tunnel housed only the gearshift lever and the parking brake lever.

Specifications

The CX 7 crossover went on sale with several types of power units and transmissions. The technical characteristics of the power plants are different, the first in the range of power plants for the CX7 was a 2.2-liter turbodiesel with a power rating of 173 hp. The box with it was 6-speed, mechanical, and the drive was on both axles.

The most common was the 2.3-liter diesel unit. In a car that came with an automatic 6-speed gearbox, this unit developed 238 hp. Also, the CX 7 came with an engine of the same volume, but with “mechanics”, also a 6-speed one, but this engine already gave out 260 hp.

There was also a gasoline unit in the din. In terms of volume, it was the largest - 2.5 liters, but its power was only 163 hp, since it was atmospheric. Also with this motor was a 5-speed automatic, and the drive was front-wheel drive.

Having a sporty appearance, the crossover from Mazda did not have such a character. Its speed and dynamic performance was mediocre.

Options and price

Mazda CX7 came to dealers in several trim levels. They implied different technical equipment, but there was also a set of equipment that was basic and all cars were equipped with it. This kit included:

  • systems (ABS, TCS, EBD);
  • Cruise control;
  • steering wheel with leather trim and multifunction;
  • heated and adjustable seats (front);
  • audio system;
  • Rain sensor;
  • airbag package.

Although the CX 7 crossover had several power plants and transmissions, it came to us only with a certain filling and trim levels.

So, we only had modifications with a 2.3 liter diesel engine and automatic transmission, as well as with a gasoline unit. Two trim levels were offered for them: "Sport" and "Touring".

The diesel crossover was priced at 1,334 - 1,479 thousand rubles. Gasoline was cheaper - 1,184 thousand rubles.

Although the car is not produced, the operation of its owners continues. And they note that the CX 7 has excellent handling, fairly torquey motors, and a good consumption rate.

The disadvantages of the CX 7 include the lack of equipment in the car, such as an electric boot, the lack of additional lighting in some places. It is also noted that the crossover is poorly prepared in terms of sound insulation.

In the lineup of the Japanese company Mazda, there are several cars whose history was not so successful and long. For example, the CX-7 lasted only 6 years from the moment the first copy was released until the car was taken out of production. Naturally, they did not bypass the Japanese manufacturer Mazda. Only by 2010 did the CX-7 take on the form of a compact car.

There is also an all-wheel drive modification with the already familiar 2.3-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and 260 hp. In fact, the only difference is in the platform.

In 2010, after restyling, the developers added another modification. It was created specifically for lovers of a comfortable ride. A six-speed automatic, front-wheel drive and a mid-power 2.5-liter engine with 163 hp guarantee unsurpassed handling and maneuverability.
