The victims of such a run were two simultaneously punctured wheels (more on that later) and about 400 liters of diesel fuel. The picture, by the way, changes immediately, as soon as you throw some 500 kilograms of luggage into the trunk of a Volkswagen: a slightly sagging feed noticeably smooths out both the amplitude of body vibrations and the dissatisfaction of passengers. Transmission is good: the rear axle connects instantly

Since the inscription Cross proudly flaunted on its bright green sides, forgive me, neither conscience nor natural curiosity allowed me not to check what was written. Cross means cross. Caddy, for his part, did not hit the face in the dirt. At least in its entirety - the protruding "lip" of the front end continually sought to remove part of the soil (there are only 16 cm of ground clearance under the front gearbox). Once again, prepared ballast saves us: sandbags should be included as standard! The fact is that in a loaded state, not only smoothness improves, but also the risk of damage to the ill-fated bumper is reduced, which, due to a slightly sagging stern, rises 2-3 centimeters above the ground. Those places on which our heels cling to the belly, when fully loaded, flew calmly, proudly with its nose up. And on the primer Caddy really justifies the name Cross: if it weren’t for the low ground clearance, it would be possible to drive along the broken country roads at a rally pace: the suspension is energy-intensive, and the all-wheel drive works perfectly - to check it, I have repeatedly traveled to black soil washed out by rain. Even with purely asphalt tires, this Volkswagen climbs forward with enviable stubbornness - the moment of connecting the rear axle is absolutely invisible. The main thing is not to forget to turn off the ESP so that it does not "choke" the engine.


Fortunately, in any case, the motor pulls perfectly: a 2-liter diesel engine (110 hp, 280 Nm) allows our “grasshopper” to feel like a fast locust, especially in the bustle of the city. It's hard to believe in 12.8 seconds to a hundred - a maximum of 10! But on the track, his ardor subsides, and after 100 km / h it becomes a little difficult to overtake, but still possible. However, even despite the notorious rear springs, the Caddy's handling is almost Golf.

Low profile tires in the Cross version are not the best solution

Excellent feedback on the steering wheel, small rolls, a pleasant stroke of the manual lever and predictable brakes. No wonder, because the chassis is based on the "trolley" Golf V 2003, with the exception of the rear suspension. But there are nuances: if the front-wheel drive Caddy is equipped with a more comfortable semi-independent beam suspended on 2-leaf springs, then the 4Motion versions have a continuous axle with more rigid single sheets. Therefore, all-wheel drive versions on rough roads behave a little more nervously.

Additional removable bags on the trip will not be superfluous

It is impossible not to note the traditional Volkswagen ergonomics: everyone is comfortable in the cabin! When traveling, an abundance of various niches, drawers and shelves will be especially useful. And for a surcharge, Volkswagen can be equipped with extremely convenient removable fabric bags for small items that fill the openings of the rear side windows and hang on the backs of the front seats. On a long journey, I was especially pleased with the dipped beam: excellent lighting, especially in the version with bi-xenon headlights with a cornering light function. The high beam is also good, but it could be better - in this mode, the headlight beam only slightly rises above the road. But it did not help to save the "grasshopper" from injury. At night, exactly halfway between Moscow and St. Petersburg, one serious drawback of this vehicle configuration was confirmed. Namely, low-profile 17-inch tires, two of which were successfully punctured on one of the treacherous railroad crossings. And the damage was fatal: on the front wheel, a cast disk was badly bent, and on the rear, the sidewall was pierced. Download will not work. Of course, it was worth driving at a slightly lower speed, and such an opportunity would not have happened. But, on the other hand, at the same 40 km / h on standard 15-inch tires, this could have been avoided. The most interesting thing is that there is no spare wheel in the basic configuration of the Cross Caddy!

The caddy is surprisingly good on light off-road! He would have more ground clearance, but a shorter bumper ...

“You should have seen what queues for tire fitting line up in winter!” - the employee of the gas station “reassured” us. I had to get out of the situation: instead of a punctured wheel, collect a suitable 15th disc in the workshop and mount an old tire on it, and put a “Gazelle” camera in a bent wheel.

What is the verdict of our test? Cross Caddy belongs to the rare class of all-wheel drive minivans for our country - there are practically no alternatives in this segment. It combines the qualities most demanded in our country: a reliable suspension, all-wheel drive, an economical turbodiesel and a roomy interior. Why not replace the traditional SUV? Before a real “cross”, you don’t need so much: slightly increase the ground clearance, cut off excess plastic from the front bumper, soften the rear suspension and put on more tenacious tires.
