The Hyundai Genesis business class sedan entered the assembly line of the Korean Ulsan plant in 2008. The car, created on a completely new rear-wheel drive platform, was designed to compete with luxury cars of German brands and Lexuses.

In the Russian market, the sedan was offered with a 3.8-liter power unit at a price of 1.7 million rubles, but the demand for the car was very low, and in 2012 sales of the model ended. Production of Genesis continued until 2013.

The second-generation Hyundai Genesis business class sedan was launched in Korea in 2013, and the car entered the Russian market in 2014. In 2016, the assembly of the model started at Avtotor in Kaliningrad.

In Russia, two versions of the sedan were offered. Hyundai Genesis with a V6 3.0 engine (249 hp) could have rear or all-wheel drive, and the version with a V6 3.8 engine (315 hp) had an all-wheel drive transmission. All versions had an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The appearance of the Genesis G70 2019 flaunts a mass of stylish elements, and its holistic appearance arouses genuine interest and admiration. The front of the car received a wide false radiator grille, above which the company badge flaunts. Below is a stylish front bumper with a sporty look, air vents and braces on the sides. The head optics are placed in narrow headlights, where the main light, fog lights and turn signals coexist surprisingly well.

The stern of the Hyundai Genesis G70 is made tasty and without unnecessary praises: a gentle descent of the roof, at the end of which a “shark fin” flaunts; trunk lid with a continuation in the form of a kind of spoiler; rear lights that follow the contour of the side lines of the luggage compartment lid. The rear bumper has stylish ribs on the sides, smoothly flowing into the car body, and in the center there is a decorative insert made of a small wavy vertical grille. On the right is a twin exhaust pipe, consisting of two separate halves of a square shape.

From the side, the new Genesis G70 demonstrates a masterful combination of style, design and practicality. Its streamlined shape speaks of the vehicle's swiftness and sporty character. Wheel arches have a clear rounded shape. Behind the front arches is a small bracket, with its sharp angle directed in the direction of the car, which gives the overall look a touch of swiftness. The lower and upper parts of the side doors are decorated with longitudinal ribs, smoothly merging with the main body of the sedan. The roof of the car flows smoothly towards the stern and merges with the luggage compartment lid. The overall design of the Genesis G70 speaks of the status and bright character of the model. To paint the body, motorists are offered ten different enamels.

The interior of the new Genesis G70 model is no less catchy than its appearance. Inside, the owners expect a comfortable and convenient interior, which is also quite spacious. The manufacturer did not provide complete information about the equipment of the Genesis G70 cabin, but according to preliminary data, it is known that the front seats - the driver and passenger - have a deep seating position, a relief structure and all kinds of functions that ensure a comfortable trip: heating, ventilation and massage.

The front panel is well equipped from a technical point of view and interestingly executed - from a design point of view. On the top of the center console is a vertical 8-inch touchscreen display with high image quality and fast response to touch. Below are horizontal air circulation deflectors, under which there are three stylish air conditioning controls. Almost all functional control is carried out on the display.

There are five different interior colors to choose from. The manufacturer also took care of safety - the car is equipped with nine airbags.

The overall dimensions of the fascinating Genesis G70 sedan are:

Genesis Motors is the luxury transportation division of South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai Motor Group. Originally envisioned alongside a plan for a new Hyundai Genesis luxury sedan in 2004, the Genesis brand was officially announced as a standalone marque on November 4, 2015.

The G80 5.0 ($58,000) includes everything in the 3.8 package plus a V8 engine, 19-inch wheels and a microfibre suedecloth headliner.

Genesis brand cars have been on our market for a long time. At the very beginning of its life, this car was sold under the Hyundai brand and was called the Hyundai Genesis, and since the beginning of last year, Genesis has become a separate brand. Hyundai made a luxury division, apparently due to the fact that the concept of "premium" and "Hyundai" does not fit in people's heads. So is there a premium in the Korean sedan? And what to buy? "Eshku", "five" or "Genesis"? Let's figure it out in order.

Let's take a look at the exterior of the car. Does he remind you of anything? Many say that in the appearance of the Genesis, the features of other cars are guessed. I personally have not seen anything like it. He looks like an adult, no longer Korean, but not German either. A sort of golden mean, somewhere between Lexus and Infiniti. Everything that is loved in Russia is present: a moderate amount of chrome, a length of 5 meters, a large radiator grille with a collision warning sensor located in the center, LED headlights (true: only in the maximum configuration) and so on.

It's no exaggeration to say that during a week-long test drive, at least three people asked what kind of Bentley model it was? But it's true! The Koreans drew a beautiful badge, with wings, noble and aristocratic. Only here you will not understand from whom the idea was borrowed? Maybe the same Bentley? Or Aston Martin? Or maybe even at the "Mini"? But it won't focus on it. Let's move on to the interior, in my opinion, there is something to tell.

And our interior, although it does not shine with some designer bells and whistles, does not repel, as it was before, 10 years ago. In fact, the interior of the Genesis G80 was already born old. You look at it and understand that this should be in cars of 2008-2012, but not in 2018. Although it does not have newfangled interior lighting around the perimeter, there is only a lone blue parabola on the ceiling in the eyeglass case area, the interior is pleasant and being in it - pure pleasure.

I have always respected Koreans for their desire to be better. While Avtovaz is proud of its SV Cross, Korea has made a business class and a hot sedan that are not inferior to competitors.

So, let's take a closer look. We have a beige interior with perforations on the seats to cool off your heat on hot summer days with the help of ventilation. We raise our eyes a little higher and see a fairly wide insert made of wood on the dashboard, which has a pleasant texture and shade. The center console, covered with aluminum, is strewn with buttons, and the first time you sit behind the wheel, you are afraid to get confused in all this. But do not be afraid: everything is intuitive here.

All the "vital" buttons are located where they should be, and the size of these buttons is huge in Japanese, even hitting a scattering of buttons with your fist will still turn on what you originally planned. In the center of the tunnel is a multimedia control puck with buttons for quickly switching to the menu, navigation or audio, as well as turning on the heating of the steering wheel and seats. A little higher we have climate control and audio control buttons. The pocket hides outputs for USB and AUX wires, as well as wireless charging for smartphones.

On the left behind the steering wheel there is a block of six buttons that are responsible for opening the trunk, the gas tank hatch, which, by the way, constantly freezes and does not really open, as well as buttons for enabling active hold in the lane and displaying obstacles in the blind zone. The handbrake is electric, located just below this block. I never used it because of the unusual location, I constantly forgot about it.

Turn on media. The wings of Genesis lit up on the central screen, and we find ourselves in the main menu, which came to us straight from 2005, yes, I'm not exaggerating, the design of the icons resembles those in Windows Media Player, even the color of the design is similar - blue. But this is the only remark, since everything works quite quickly, and the Lexicon audio system plays Russian rap and English classics perfectly. What is the "lexicon", you ask? Are you hearing for the first time? I also first learned about it when I took the car for a test, but, as Wikipedia says, Lexicon is part of the Harman group, which includes such brands from the music industry as Harman / Kardon, JBL, Bang & Olufsen and others. In general, I calmed down and was confident in the quality of the audio system.

The dashboard looks simple and restrained, but simply does not always mean bad, in this case very good. It reads great at any time of the day. The on-board computer screen is large, from well to well. The exclamation mark reminded me every day that the pressure in the front wheels was below normal, although I constantly checked it, and it corresponded to the passport 2.4 atmospheres. Winter! What can I say, many do.

If behind the wheel I felt like a taxi driver, then the back row here is head and shoulders above the German competitors - you feel like a real boss. To begin with, there is simply more legroom here, you can’t stretch them out, as in the Maybach, but you can compare them with the short S-class.

The front passenger seat can be moved and tilted with the buttons on the end on the left side or the buttons in the rear armrest. I don’t remember this in the five BMWs.

Is there an armrest with an abundance of buttons responsible for music, heating and a rear window blind in Mercedes? Of course not. According to the general visual inspection, I had the most pleasant impressions. It immediately becomes clear who is in charge in the car. Double glazing front and rear. Silence in the cabin up to 140 km / h.

I don’t think it’s worth talking about how I tried to take the mattress away from IKEA. Do not be surprised that in every review I mention this store, it's just a great measuring tool. The mattress cannot be taken away, because the back sofa cannot be decomposed in any way - count on a capacity of a maximum of a couple of suitcases.

Now let's hit the road and appreciate the Genesis in motion

Under the hood is a new engine for Genesis, 2.0 with a capacity of 245 forces. Thanks to the Koreans for fitting into a more adequate tax.

Acceleration to hundreds takes more than 8 seconds. Yes many. Yes, the car is heavy. But there is absolutely no desire to press the pedal in it, although in Drive Mode you can select the sport mode, but the sport is not real. The engine keeps increased speed, and the steering wheel is poured with artificial weight.

This car was made for something else. For example, to take you from point A to point B with maximum comfort. It behaves so imposingly on the road, it swallows the unevenness of the asphalt so well that the first thing I thought was that I was driving a Mercedes in 221 body.

Honestly, almost the same driving experience, only I would like a slightly more informative steering wheel, it is too light. The engine is completely inaudible even at high speeds.

The brakes are a little wobbly, it takes a little more effort to stop before a traffic light.

The consumption of 95th gasoline for a two-liter turbocharged engine is within the psychological mark of 15 liters. In the city, he consumes 13.7 liters, and the suburban highway takes him 8 liters per hundred. You can’t call it economical, it “eats” more than cars from the German troika. It is clear why: the difference in weight is 400 kilograms.

Of course, the car deserves attention, it is not a gray mouse on the roads. In a bright blue color, it looks spectacular and catches the eye of passers-by. But the car is not for those who are more impressed by the word "show-off" than the word "comfort".

I will be honest with you: I would not advise buying this car and driving alone, only if you have a family. It is better to entrust this business to a professional driver, and then complete harmony will come, and this car will delight you every day. He is able to outshine German competitors solely in terms of comfort, but not driving performance. In this regard, he is quite far from the same A6.

Having spun off the Genesis premium brand from the parent brand Hyundai, the Koreans have never hidden their strategy for expanding into world markets. First Korea, then the USA and the Middle East, and the next bridgehead is Russia! Back in the days of the Moscow Motor Show, I managed to photograph the Genesis G90 flagship sedan with Russian numbers in the parking lot of the Crocus Expo exhibition center, on which the company's management arrived at the premiere of Creta. And now the official presentation of the Genesis brand in Russia has taken place.

Readers of Autoreview are with cars of a new brand, therefore, the strategy of their promotion in Russia is now the most interesting. Cars for our market will be assembled from SKD kits at the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad. The executive sedan Genesis G90 will be the first to be released, replacing the well-known Hyundai Equus model. Moreover, such a car can be bought both with the mentioned aspirated 3.8, and with the latest V6 3.3 T-GDI biturbo engine with a capacity of 370 hp. The same engine, along with the flagship G8 5.0 (413 hp), will be available in the richest Royal package with separate second-row seats, auto-braking and lane control systems.

Electronic assistants for a fee can be installed on the first two versions. And at the top of the range is a modification extended by 290 mm, which the Koreans call a “limousine”. But, strictly speaking, a car without a partition between the rows is just an elongated sedan. However, this is unlikely to stop buyers: in previous years, the long-wheelbase version of Ekus accounted for up to 10% of sales, although in 2015 there were only six buyers.

Prices for the G90 will be announced simultaneously with the start of sales. However, do not expect cheap premium sedans. Most likely, compared to the Hyundai Equus model (from 3.4 million rubles), prices will increase by about a third. This means that you need to focus on about 4.5 million! Although it is still cheaper than the Mercedes S-class, which now costs from 5.9 million rubles.

What's next? Business sedan, that is, a restyled Hyundai Genesis with an expanded set of equipment, will appear with us in early 2017. A year later, the Genesis G70 sedan the size of a BMW three-ruble note will arrive in Russia - it was shown at the last New York Auto Show. And then, in full accordance with the global one, there will be a large and compact crossover plus a two-door, replacing the discontinued Hyundai Genesis Coupe model. But these models do not even have names yet, and their market launch is scheduled for the end of the decade.
