Where is the A/C compressor located? Where to repair the air conditioning compressor

11.10.2019

A faulty air conditioner compressor most often manifests itself as follows:

  • Noise (monotonous hum) when the car air conditioner is off with the engine running, coming from the car air conditioner compressor. It's most likely the pulley bearing. Possible consequences of bearing failure: due to heating, the electromagnetic coil fails, the bearing rotates in the seat, which subsequently entails the replacement of the compressor front cover, the appearance of microcracks on the mechanical seal, refrigerant leakage in the front seal of the compressor shaft. due to the pulley misalignment, uneven wear of the pulley and pressure plate occurs, the air conditioning compressor jams. One of the simplest faults is treated by replacing the bearing with a basic set of clutch removal tools.
  • Voltage comes to the electromagnetic coil - but the compressor clutch does not turn on. Most likely, the electromagnetic clutch is faulty (the cause may be overheating of the compressor, as a result of which the coil has melted), or there is too much clearance between the pulley and the pressure plate (workout in the clutch, for example). Also a simple problem, often caused by wear on the pulley bearing, is treated by replacing the bearing with an elementary set of tools to remove the clutch and failed coils, pulleys, and pressure plates.
  • Leakage of the compressor is the simplest malfunction, if the body parts are not damaged, then it is eliminated by replacing the compressor repair kit (disassembly, washing, assembly of the compressor with the replacement of the repair kit (without the cost of the repair kit), with checking its performance at the stand). Body parts can often be restored using argon welding.
  • When the air conditioner is turned on, with the engine running, noise is heard (monotonous hum, knocking, rumbling) coming from the AC compressor (the air conditioner can work at the same time) or, according to the pressure gauges, there is no or slight pressure drop in the suction and discharge lines when the compressor is turned on with the engine running.

Possible causes of compressor failure:

  • normal wear and tear of the car air conditioner compressor
  • too little or too much refrigerant in the system
  • the cooling fan is faulty or the condenser (air conditioner radiator) is clogged with dirt and due to the increased load, the compressor wears out prematurely
  • the circulation of the refrigerant is disturbed (the freon pipeline, the condenser are jammed, the thermal expansion valve is closed)

Attention! Before installing the compressor, eliminate the cause of the failure of the previous compressor!

  • carry out troubleshooting of the air conditioner compressor, according to the results of the troubleshooting, repair or replace the compressor (in case of failure of more than 50% of the parts).
  • check the serviceability of the engine cooling fan - its failure may cause increased pressure in the system.
  • check the cleanliness of the condenser
  • flush the AC system (if there is contamination)
  • find and eliminate the cause of the compressor failure

It is impossible to repair the air conditioning compressor in a car on your own, without knowing the principle of its construction. Automobile air conditioning is a complex structure, including:

  1. Compressor. The main part that ensures the flow of refrigerant to the radiator.
  2. Radiator. Promotes timely cooling of the refrigerant. Due to the fact that a car radiator is located near it, the air flow that occurs during the movement of the car helps to further reduce the temperature.
  3. Fan. Cools the refrigerant to a certain temperature.
  4. Receiver. Responsible for filtering condensate from dirt and dust particles.
  5. thermostatic valve. Through it, the condensate, which has passed into the gaseous state, is transported to the evaporator.
  6. Evaporative device. With the help of a fan, it allows the cooled refrigerant to enter the interior of the car.

Another important detail is the electrical coupling. It is necessary so that after starting the car air conditioner, the pressure pulleys are tightly connected to the disk powered by the drive belt. When the electric clutch breaks down, the motorist has to repair the air conditioner autocompressor.

Features of the cooling system

Cooling the air inside a closed machine becomes possible as follows. When the compressor, which has several special pistons, reduces the volume of the refrigerant and transfers it to a liquid. The liquid freely spreads throughout the auto-conditioning system and causes it to lower the temperature in the cabin to the specified values. In order not to have to frequently repair the air conditioning compressor, moving parts must be treated with a special lubricant.

Compressor malfunctions

The fact that the air conditioner compressor is not working properly may be indicated by a strange hum, rattle coming from the engine compartment. The reason for the occurrence of such sounds can be:

  1. Too little or no refrigerant oil. Moving parts must be lubricated regularly. In this case, oil of a specific brand and density recommended by the manufacturer should be used.
  2. Excessive pressure inside the auto-conditioning system. It may increase due to the fact that the fan cannot cope with the function of cooling the radiator. This is fraught with premature wear of parts and their breakage even with timely oil treatment.
  3. Dents on aluminum tubes, kinks in hoses. The uniform movement of the refrigerant through crumpled pipes and hoses is disturbed, and sharp pressure surges occur inside the system.
  4. Freon leak. It can leak through a worn shaft seal, cracks in the cover.
  5. Incorrectly working pressure sensor and faulty electrics.

If among the listed factors it was not possible to find the cause of the malfunction of the air conditioning compressor, the motorist should pay attention to the electric clutch. If the air conditioner starts without a characteristic click, then the problem is in it.

Most often, the electric clutch becomes unusable due to banal wear or coil melting.

Insufficient lubrication of parts

Sometimes motorists use too little oil to lubricate the elements or do it irregularly. In such cases, it will be necessary to overhaul the air conditioning compressor in the car. Otherwise, insufficient lubrication in the future will result in:

  1. Breakage of the bearing, which occupies a place in the pulley of constant rotation. Strong heating of the bearing during operation leads to a distortion of the pressure disk or burnout of the varnish on the electromagnetic clutch.
  2. Abrasion of the walls inside the case. Strong friction from unlubricated parts creates metal dust that settles on rubber hoses, aluminum tubes, the evaporator and other parts of the system, leading to jamming.

Sometimes low-quality lubricants containing a large sediment are poured into the system. Then, during the operation of the air conditioner, this sediment inevitably clogs the expansion valve and receiver. To correct the situation, you will have to change them to new ones, having previously cleaned other parts of the air conditioning system.

Self troubleshooting

After the cause of the malfunction is determined, you can repair the car air conditioner compressors with your own hands. To do this, it is necessary to remove the refrigerant from the cooling system and open the compressor.

The further algorithm of actions will depend on which part needs to be repaired or replaced.

  1. Stuffing box. Dismantle the coupling hub, remove the locking element that secures the gasket. In place of the old oil seal, put a new one using a special mandrel, assemble in the reverse order.
  2. Shaft bearing. Dismantle the electrical coupling, remove the worn bearing, replace with a new one.
  3. Electro coupling. Disassemble the blower. Get the failed part - coil, shaft or pressure plate. Insert a new element, assemble the supercharger.
  4. Pump. In most cases, problems are solved by simply adding oil to the system. If the pump stops working due to a large amount of sediment or aluminum dust, a thorough flushing of the mechanism should be carried out.

It is one of the nodes that ensure a comfortable stay of a motorist in a car while driving. Often, our motorists are faced with the problem of the inoperability of the device, and, as a rule, the problem lies in the failure of the compressor. Below we will talk about how do-it-yourself air conditioning compressor repairs are carried out, what is the principle of operation, what are the causes of the breakdown and how to diagnose.

[ Hide ]

Characteristic

It often happens that the device does not turn on, why does this happen? There can be many reasons. Before we tell you why it doesn’t work, how disassembly is done, we will consider the device of the system and the principle of operation.

Device

How any car air conditioner works:

  1. Electro coupling. The electric clutch is designed to magnetize the pressure pulley to the disc, which operates from the drive belt. It is the electric clutch that presses the pulleys after turning on the air conditioner. As practice shows, the failure of the electrical coupling is often the main cause of device failure. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the diagnostics of the electrical coupling.
  2. The compressor itself which is inside. When the air conditioner compressor is running, it drives the refrigerant through the pipes to the condenser (radiator).
  3. The radiator is designed to cool the refrigerant. The radiator is located near the car's radiator, so the airflow during driving also helps to cool the refrigerant.
  4. A fan that activates and works with the node. When the element is turned on, it cools the refrigerant. After the refrigerant has cooled, it enters the receiver.
  5. The receiver is located inside and is a filter element that cleans the condensate from dust and dirt and directs it to the expansion valve.
  6. Valve. As for the valve, it is designed to supply condensate to the evaporator after the condensate has passed into a gaseous state.
  7. Evaporative device passes the refrigerant through itself, cools down, and then transfers the cold to the passenger compartment with the help of a fan.

Principle of operation

Now let's move on to the principle of operation. As for the principle of operation of the compressor, everything is simple here. This component is designed to compress, as well as convert the refrigerant into a liquid state with further circulation of the consumable throughout the system. As a rule, piston compressors equipped with several pistons are used in modern vehicles. Their principle of operation is that after they are turned on, they work as a result of the action of a supercharger. This supercharger is mounted on a pulley and moves only in the axial direction.

The pistons themselves compress the refrigerant according to a certain principle to the required state, after which they send it further through the system. The moving parts of the compressor need lubrication, which is provided by a special oil. As for oil, here, in principle, everything is individual for each car model. When the compressor is running, it takes from 2 to 15 horsepower from the motor power.

How to properly check the device

So, the repair of the air conditioner compressor is needed when the circuit has a malfunction. This may be the inoperability of the electrical coupling, noise during connection, leakage of the stuffing box, etc. In order to properly check the performance of all elements and properly diagnose, let's first look at the signs.

signs

Signs that indicate that the device is jammed or does not work correctly in general can be detected during external diagnostics of the device. Sometimes external diagnostics are enough to identify possible causes and check the device's performance. But sometimes you can check the signs by ear, if during the operation of the circuit there are third-party noises that are uncharacteristic of the device.

  1. The first symptom that can be checked without a thorough diagnosis is a lack of cold airflow. To check this sign with your own hands, you can turn on the air conditioner in the car at full power and evaluate how the device blows. A symptom of no cold air may indicate a refrigerant leak.
  2. You can check the performance of the device with your own hands by the presence of new noise. In the event that noise occurs during the operation of the air conditioner, then there may be several reasons, you will learn about them below.
  3. Attentive motorists sometimes notice that the system does not turn on the way it used to. In particular, when connected, the click stops working. You can check this yourself by turning on the system.
  4. In addition to noise, a loud knock may appear during the operation of the system. Checking this is easy - just turn on the system.

Causes

  1. As mentioned above, air conditioning compressor repair can occur in several cases. First of all, this is the repair of the gland. The oil seal is essentially a consumable item, since the oil seal has to be changed periodically. As a rule, the inoperability of the stuffing box is detected as a result of a refrigerant leak. If mechanical problems appear in the operation of the compressor, then either the stuffing box or the docking points of the device usually leaks. A leaky oil seal can be detected using an ultraviolet lamp. To determine the gland, luminescent paint must be added to the refrigerant in advance. In practice, it is the seals that most often become the reasons for the need to purchase a repair kit and replace.
  2. As for noise, after connecting the device, the appearance of sounds indicates a breakdown of the bearing devices of the drive pulley or shaft. Also, noise in the operation of the device circuit may indicate the need to tighten the strap. In the event that the electric clutch is turned off, and the compressor shaft turns with great difficulty with a loose strap, then most likely the reason lies in the bearing. If the roller can be rotated with your own hands without problems, then most likely the shaft bearing has failed.
  3. Separately, it is necessary to highlight the electrical coupling. If the click does not work when the air conditioner is connected, then the problem lies in the electrical coupling. The absence of a click when the car air conditioner is turned on is due to the wear of the element and the appearance of a gap. In addition, the coil may be the cause - if the compressor overheats, then the coil may melt, in this case, buying a repair kit cannot be avoided.
  4. If knocks appear during the operation of the air conditioner after connection, then this may indicate bent valves, as well as worn piston surfaces. In addition, the appearance of knocks may be due to too high or too low a pressure level that forms at the outlet and inlet of the device (the author of the video on replacing the bearing is vassilij pavliuk).

Repair of major faults

If certain breakdowns are found in the operation of the air conditioning compressor circuit, then first of all it is necessary to purchase a repair kit.

So, how is the repair and replacement of certain elements of the device circuit carried out:

  1. If there is minor damage to the case, it is not necessary to replace it. It is enough to turn off the component, weld the case using argon-arc welding with further connection.
  2. To replace the stuffing box, after buying a repair kit, you should get rid of the refrigerant in the system, and then dismantle the compressor. If gasket leaks are detected in the operation of the circuit, the blower component housing must be disassembled. This case is made up of several elements and usually the leakage occurs between them. To replace the stuffing box, the coupling hub should be dismantled, and then, having got rid of the locking element that secures the gasket, the stuffing box can be dismantled. When the element is removed, it is replaced, for this you will have to use a special mandrel. After replacement, the circuit is assembled and its further connection is carried out.
  3. To change the shaft bearing, you need to purchase the appropriate repair kit. The use of the elements of the repair kit is carried out after dismantling the compressor from the air conditioner. After dismantling the coupling, it is necessary to remove the bearing, take a new one from the repair kit and install it instead of the old one.
  4. If the problem lies in the electrical coupling, then after purchasing the repair kit, you need to dismantle the supercharger. The pressure plate, the failed coil or the shaft, on which there are traces of wear, are removed from this component. All elements of the repair kit are replaced with new ones, after which they are put back on the supercharger.
  5. If the problem lies in the pistons of the device, then experts recommend adding oil to the system. Allegedly, this will help to delay the failure of the compressor for a certain period. But if wear products are present in the system, they can clog the receiver and valve, as a result, the system will have to be flushed.
