Perhaps the radical difference between the updated model and the previous version lies in the greater smoothness of the lines. Obviously, when working on the exterior of the car, the designers took as a model the Ford Evos concept presented to the public two years ago.

Looking at the Ford Mondeo 2014-2015 from the front, associations with Aston Martin models involuntarily arise. The similarity is given by the shape of a massive radiator grille, divided by the original "lip" of the bumper. The squint of the headlights with an aspiring, piercing “look”, organically emphasized by foglights, also draws attention. By the way, the narrowed headlights have exclusively LED filling, ranging from adaptive high beam lamps to direction indicators and running lights. The sides of the car, like its hood, flaunt longitudinal ribs, which gives the car swiftness. The window sill line of the body is quite high, the wheel arches are large, of the correct circumference. From the rear, the car looks massive, which, however, was also characteristic of the predecessor model. Rear LED optics looks especially beautiful in the dark. The high quality of finishing and interior design corresponds to the level of comfort of the cabin. A rather big car will easily take on board five people. Moreover, you can equally comfortably sit both in the front seats and on the back sofa, designed for three tall riders. The fifth generation Ford Mondeo was first shown at the beginning of 2012 at the North American International Auto Show - in the USA the car has been sold for several years under the name Fusion. The new Mondeo reached Russia only in 2015, when cars assembled at the plant in Vsevolozhsk became available for order to our compatriots.

The previous generation stayed on the market for a very long time - eight years (from 2007 to 2014), having survived the facelift in 2010. According to Ford estimates, there are now about 130,000 Mondeos of various generations on the Russian market. In the last couple of years, Mondeo sales have declined markedly: in 2014, 3,600 cars were sold - trifles against the background of the market leader, Toyota Camry (34,000). However, the decline in 2013-2014 is due to a delay in the release of a new model. In previous years, the Mondeo was among the leaders in the segment - buyers chose this sedan, guided by the principle of "more car for less money": in a rich configuration and with a powerful engine (200 or 240 horsepower), it turned out to be cheaper than most competitors. The author of these lines still drives a “restyled” Mondeo 4 with a 200-horsepower Ecoboost engine - in 3 years the car has already traveled 75 thousand kilometers without causing any problems. Therefore, it was especially interesting to get acquainted with the new Mondeo, since a car with the same 200-horsepower engine was provided for testing.

⇡ Exterior

Externally, the new "Mondeo" is definitely a success, especially the front of the car. A powerful radiator grille with a high hood and narrow headlights give the car solidity - it’s not without reason that associations with Aston Martin immediately come to mind.

The massive "muzzle" of the car is in perfect harmony with the hood of an interesting shape - "Mondeo" inspires respect and arouses the interest of neighbors downstream.

LED headlights with a beautiful strip of daytime running lights fit perfectly into the image of the car. In general, the face of the new Mondeo clearly came out - the designers did their best.

In profile, the new Ford is not so expressive, although due to the sloping roof, the silhouette turned out to be swift.

Most of the questions are to the rear of the sedan - there are not even very noticeable changes relative to the fourth generation. The impression is somewhat brightened up by the exhaust pipes, beautifully inscribed in the rear bumper, but this is the prerogative of trim levels equipped with turbocharged Ecoboost engines.

Russian sedans received increased ground clearance - up to plastic protection as much as 167 mm. However, if you install steel engine protection, this figure will decrease slightly, but not all competitors can still boast of such clearance. The distance from the ground to the front bumper is 200 mm, so you can safely park close to the curbs.

⇡ Interior

The fifth generation Ford Mondeo is a global car, unlike the previous version developed by the company's European division. Perhaps that is why it does not look so impressive inside and is clearly inferior to its competitors in the face of Nissan and Toyota, not to mention Skoda and VW.

Especially a lot of claims to the center console. Well, this interior detail should not look like this in a business class car worth more than one and a half million rubles! In the Ford Fusion, the buttons below the screen were mostly touch-sensitive. Mondeo decided to abandon them in favor of conventional ones, for which many thanks to Ford. But this decision is not the best way reflected in the appearance of the center console. The space in its lower part looks even stranger - there is a deep niche hiding there, which has no walls on the sides, as if they were forgotten to be installed at the factory.

The 8-inch screen of the multimedia system is touch-sensitive, it can also be used to change the parameters of the climate control. Below it are the keys responsible for the operation of the multimedia and climate systems. The temperature change buttons are located on the very bottom row, and they are not very convenient to use. To the left of the automatic transmission lever there is an electronic “handbrake” lever, to the right are the activation keys for automatic parking systems. A little lower - two convenient coasters with latches. The space around is made of glossy plastic, which is quickly covered with fingerprints.

The plump leather-wrapped steering wheel now has a heating system - a very useful option for residents of most of our country. Unlike the same Opel cars, in the Mondeo the steering wheel rim does not heat up to a high temperature, so the heating can not be turned off at all. On the steering wheel, a bunch of small buttons are striking, which are not very convenient to press. Of the unusual things, it is worth noting the paddle shifters, with which you can shift gears in the manual mode of the automatic transmission.

The instrument panel includes a display of complex shape - it is inscribed in the space of the speedometer and tachometer wells, that is, the instrument arrows are electronic. The scales of the speedometer and tachometer cannot be called successful - too frequent lined makes it difficult to read the information.

Glossy plastic on the door handle is very quickly covered with dust and fingerprints - not the best choice of material in such a soiled place.

But the assembly, which includes a speaker, a door opening handle, a key for locking locks and buttons for saving electric seat adjustment settings, successfully fit into the interior of the car. The mirrors in the new Mondeo are slightly smaller than those of their predecessor, but their size is still sufficient for a comfortable view of the neighbors downstream. An indicator is integrated into the mirrors, warning about the presence of cars in the "blind" zone.

A two-story glove box is suitable for transporting documents and various small items, but even a small box will no longer fit into it.

The upholstered seats are comfortable enough, and in the configuration we got, they are fully electrically adjustable. Optional multicontour chairs with massage function are available: they are upholstered in leather and equipped with 11 pneumatic chambers located in different areas of the seat. According to the manufacturer, such chairs provide improved support, and the massage function reduces fatigue on long trips.

On the second row, passengers have enough legroom to feel comfortable, they also have access to buttons for turning on heated seats, air vents, a cigarette lighter socket and even a 230-V outlet where you can plug in a laptop or smartphone power supply for recharging.

Also available is an armrest with a hidden compartment and two cup holders. The second row of Ford Mondeo seats is equipped with inflatable seat belts - in the event of a collision, the seat belts inflate with gas and thus reduce pressure on the chest, while helping to control the movement of the head and neck of the rear passengers. Each belt is inflated using cooled liquefied gas, which enters through a special tube located behind the rear seat. The inflatable seat belts distribute the load of an impact five times more effectively than conventional belts. In addition, the load is distributed over a large area, reducing pressure and supporting the head and neck.

The volume of the luggage compartment is 516 liters with a “stowaway” and 419 liters with a full-size spare wheel. The predecessor's trunk had a volume of 493 liters. As in all large sedans, the trunk is uncomfortable: a lot of depth and a narrow opening. In addition, a lot of usable space is eaten up by the hinges of the trunk lid - the Mondeo 4 had gas springs, so there is a deterioration here. In addition, the trunk lid itself is very light, and when it is closed, the fixed license plate rattles disgustingly. Not solid with...

Ford's official website claims that the new Mondeo can be bought for a handsome amount of 999 thousand rubles. Previously, the base engine for the Ford Mondeo was a 2-liter engine with 145 hp. s., now it has been replaced by a 2.5-liter 149-horsepower engine, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission (most likely, the Ford 6F35 automatic, familiar to us from the Ford Kuga, is used). By the way, there are no alternatives to the box - the mechanics and the PowerShift robotic gearbox are now inaccessible to Russians. Apparently, in order to save money, it was decided to abandon the brainchild of Getrag. The transition from the "robot" to the classic automatic affected the dynamics of the car - with a 200-horsepower Ecoboost engine, the Mondeo accelerates to 100 km / h in 8.7 seconds, almost a second slower than its predecessor, which did it in 7.8 seconds.

Highway Light mode features a narrow beam of light with extended headlight range, while a special anti-dazzle mode for driving in bad weather minimizes the effect of dazzle: when it rains, drivers are less dazzled by reflections from wet roads. In addition, the headlights are able to automatically switch the high beam headlights to low beam when a vehicle is detected in front.

Of course, the headlights can swivel as you turn the steering wheel, a feature that is especially helpful when driving at night on a winding road. Another interesting feature is the implementation of the turn signal indication.

The Ford MyKey system provides the ability to program individual keys with the necessary settings that will be in effect when the key is used. For example, you can program the following parameters:

    maximum speed;

    audio system volume;

    turning on the audio system only when the seat belt is fastened;

    early warning of an empty tank.

So the owner of the car can easily lend the car to his wife or son without worrying that his wife will forget to refuel, and his beloved child will collect a bunch of fines for speeding.

The new Mondeo is equipped with an air quality sensor that automatically triggers and recirculates the air when polluted air is detected. There is also an air humidity sensor, which includes a system that prevents fogging of the windows in the cabin.

The instrument panel can be divided into three conventional zones: speedometer, tachometer and the space between them.

In the same menu, you can change the parameters of the car's electronic systems: turn on the traction control system, blind spot monitoring or the Active City Stop system. Here you can also activate automatic folding mirrors and blocking locks, as well as configure other settings.

The menu in the zone located in the central part of the instrument panel contains only three items: entertainment, navigation, telephone. Entertainment refers to the operation of a multimedia system, that is, you can display the name and frequency of the active radio station, or the name of the artist and the name of the currently playing track. In navigation mode, if you are currently on a route, the display shows hints for upcoming turns. The last item (phone) is active if a smartphone is connected to the multimedia system.

It is curious that both of the above menus can be turned off completely - and only the speedometer and tachometer arrows will remain on the instrument panel.

Ford Mondeo is equipped with the SYNC 2 multimedia system, which has an 8-inch color touch screen and an advanced voice control system. It is supplemented with mechanical keys to control the main functions. Using the system, you can make and receive hands-free phone calls, listen to incoming SMS messages (they are read out by voice), control music playback and climate control, view photos and videos. ⇡ Personal impressions of the editors from driving: the upgrade is canceled

I was looking forward to the test drive of the new Ford Mondeo: I really wanted to compare the new product with my car. The fifth Mondeo looks really great, but it's much more interesting how it rides. Well, the numbers do not lie - a second difference in acceleration to hundreds is felt quite clearly. It's all about the gearbox: on the "old" "Mondeo" there is a more modern robot with two "wet" clutches, which puts on the blades not the most modern classic six-speed automatic. But the chassis has become better: a large sedan perfectly holds the trajectory and easily enters turns, provoking a violation of the speed limit. Yes, and the rear suspension no longer responds with a roar when passing tram rails. Noise isolation in general has improved slightly, but the engine tone has been reconfigured - it has become rougher and more solid, but now its sound is annoying if you keep the speed above 3000.

With the interior, everything is also ambiguous: the former Mondeo was distinguished by pleasant conciseness and style, while the new one is trying to seem more expensive than it is. The interior of the Ford Mondeo is, in fact, over three years old - perhaps that's why it is inferior to its main competitors.

I have traveled over 1,000 miles by car in a week. Heated steering wheel, LED headlights, chassis, suspension and appearance are obvious pluses compared to its predecessor. But in order to decide to change your car for a new Mondeo, this is not enough. And the price scares off: for a well-equipped Mondeo with an Ecoboost engine, they ask for more than 1.5 million rubles. If for this money they offered a diesel station wagon with a PowerShift gearbox (such cars are available in Europe), I would still think, but the answer is, alas, obvious to me: the upgrade is cancelled.

⇡ Conclusion

Delays in bringing the fifth generation Ford Mondeo to market backfired on the Russian branch of the company with weak sales in 2013-2014. The American automaker has ambitious plans for this and subsequent years - to return to the top 3 in its segment. Affordable prices should help achieve this goal: the version with a 2.5-liter engine looks quite competitive in this regard.

In general, the Ford Mondeo made a good impression, especially when viewed in isolation from its predecessor. Gorgeous looks, a good chassis and a powerful engine will surely resonate in the hearts of buyers who are ready to put up with the car's shortcomings - a dubious interior design and the inability to choose a transmission. In a couple of months it will be clear whether Ford has managed to achieve its goal and get into the top three.

From below, the view of the Ford is perfectly complemented by cuts that act as an air intake along with the bumper. The front part turned out to be futuristic and rich. Everything is in its place and looks great. The side of the Ford Mondeo car shows the presence of modernity and fashionable stampings, side mirrors on legs, a high window sill with small glasses on the sides. On the body, the presence of splashes and depressions of the surface, the roof line, which has a domed shape, and excellent wheel arches, as if drawn by a compass, are noticeable. The side of the car noticeably made up for in beauty and attractiveness. In addition, the presence of a sporty character of the car is felt. This is partly due to the sharp angles of the front end when viewed from the side. The headlights mounted in front are clearly visible from the side, this creates a feeling of the omnipresence of lighting. No less beautiful are the lines that start from the headlights mounted in front and go far to the rear. They increase and decrease in a smooth order, making semicircular outlines near the door handles and the base of the doors. The rearview mirrors came out a little protruding by as much as 13 cm to the side. The update also affected the mirrors, which received turn signal repeaters.

The stern of an American car is able to attract attention and looks quite harmonious. It looks no less beautiful than the front of the car. It has neat marker lights with LED filling, a powerful bumper with a diffuser and built-in trapezium nozzles of the exhaust pipes, a huge roof of the luggage compartment, which provides easy access to the luggage compartment. Between themselves, the headlights installed at the back are connected by a line, in the middle of which the company nameplate is installed. The result was a kind of arc. A small visor stands out in the lower part, on which auxiliary light lights were placed.
