Electrical heating for commercial vehicles. Preheater - the best engine protection against frost

Electrical heating for commercial vehicles. Preheater - the best engine protection against frost

20.06.2020

In the northern regions, the problem of starting the engine in the cold is always relevant - frost thickens the oil, making crankshaft cranking more difficult and worsens fuel evaporation, reduces battery current output. Even the difference in thermal expansion of individual parts plays a role: the piston with a floating pin bites it in the cold, and the lower head of the steel connecting rod compresses more than the cast-iron crankshaft.

Therefore, having started the engine, it is necessary to warm it up so as not to risk breakage at the beginning of the movement. Here, the minus of diesel engines is revealed: at idle they slowly heat up even in summer, while in winter it is impossible to warm up a diesel engine in morse. Progazovki in the cold - a considerable risk of cranking the crankshaft liners, badass camshaft beds.

The practice of preheating an engine is as old as cars themselves - and you can now see how the engine is heated with a blowtorch. But this method is inconvenient and unsafe. So both home-made and factory engine preheater systems appeared a long time ago and continue to remain relevant.

Operating principle

The idea of an engine preheater is simple: since the engine is filled with antifreeze, then by heating the antifreeze from an external source, it will be possible to evenly heat the engine itself. The working clearances between the parts will return to normal, the oil will warm up (it will heat up in the sump from the heat of the crankcase and, on many machines, after starting, it will begin to pass through the antifreeze-oil heat exchanger) and the intake manifold. For diesel engines and engines with distributed injection, this is less relevant; for a carburetor engine, warming up the manifold and the carburetor itself in the area of \u200b\u200bthe idle system jets is necessary. The motor will also give off some of the heat to the gearbox, which is also important. Once in the car, you can immediately defrost the windows.

Preheaters are divided into two categories

  1. Electrical.
  2. Autonomous.

The simplest electric pre-heaters are heating elements in metal pipes cut into the lower radiator pipe. Such designs are self-made due to their simplicity, in the northern regions of Russia you can see cars with a 220V plug sticking out from under the hood. In Northern Europe, you can even find parking lots, where each parking space has a pole with a socket.

The minus of this is also understandable - the heating is slow due to the lack of forced movement of the liquid in the circuit. It is avoided by introducing an additional electric pump into the cooling circuit, but the need to connect the preheater to an external power source each time remains. But electric heaters do not lose popularity, there are interesting models that warm up the engine and simultaneously recharge the battery.

The liquid (autonomous) heater is connected to the electrical system, fuel line and cooling system.

But how to warm up the engine when there is no outlet nearby? The only option is to burn your own fuel. This is how autonomous preheaters are arranged: these are small stoves that burn fuel taken from the tank and heat the built-in heat exchanger. Such a starting preheater is easy to automate - connect a timer to it, a control output from an alarm. Thanks to this, in commercial vehicles, such models, for which you can even set a weekly heating schedule, are installed from the factory, and the name of the manufacturer of autonomous heaters Webasto repeated the fate of Xerox, becoming colloquially synonymous with preheating systems.

Of course, autonomous heaters have their disadvantages:

  1. First, they need fuel - with an almost empty tank, you will be left with a cold car.
  2. In the same way, a battery charge is also needed - with an old battery, the engine will warm up, but the starter will no longer spin it.

Therefore, many heating systems integrated with on-board electronics are automatically blocked when the fuel level or battery charge drops below the critical level.

The fantasy is not limited to this, but its other fruits are considered rather curiosities. For example, thermal accumulators were invented - these are thermoses in which a certain amount of coolant is stored. While the motor is running, the heat accumulator is included in the general circuit and warmed up to operating temperature; when the motor is turned off, it turns off, retaining heat. Starting a cold engine, the driver again receives a dose of antifreeze that has retained heat. It is difficult to take such developments seriously because of the short “shelf life” of the heat reserve and because of the dimensions. But they manage to be sold - these are the Canadian Centaur systems and the Russian AvtoTerm.

If we recall the unambiguously useless devices, then these are oil heaters inserted through the dipstick. Not to mention the inefficiency of heating the oil in the sump, the power of such “heaters” is so meager that they cannot heat the oil, uselessly discharging the battery.

Installation

Installation scheme Binar-5

The simplest electric heaters are easy to install - we drain the antifreeze, cut out a section of the lower radiator pipe to the desired length, insert the heater into the cut pipe, tighten the clamps and refill the antifreeze. It remains to stretch the wires so that the car is easy to "connect to the outlet."

Why does the electric heater crash into the bottom pipe? This speeds up heating due to thermal convection - heating systems without forced circulation also work. When inserting into the upper pipe, the antifreeze is heated in the radiator, and not in the motor - a closed thermostat will not allow liquid to flow into the unit due to convection.

Video: Making a do-it-yourself diesel fuel heater of the "external coil" type

If you do not have a cheap Russian heating element, but a more advanced device, then it crashes into the pipe going to the stove. Such devices are a monoblock that combines a preheater with a low power pump, therefore, they cannot be included in the main cooling line, which has a large flow area. But warming up the engine with them is faster, and at the same time, the salon stove is warming up at the same time.

For a number of motors, electric heaters are produced with the expectation of installation instead of technological motor plugs - for their installation, locksmith skills will be required, since you will first have to remove the necessary plug from the motor, and then hermetically install the heater into the block hole. It is better to entrust this to professionals, as well as the installation of an autonomous heater - this will require intervention in the engine fuel system, and proper placement of the heater exhaust.

The best models of electric preheaters

Defa

The Norwegian company is the leading manufacturer of this type of heaters. It produces electric heaters that crash into the block and are installed in the cooling circuit. The main advantage of Defa systems is modularity: the heater is supplemented with a battery charger, an autonomous interior fan, and an on timer. If desired, choose a heater model with a thermostat - such a heater is left constantly on, without the risk of overheating the motor and saving electricity, since when the set temperature is reached, the heater will automatically turn off.

Calix

Another Scandinavian company. In its model range, universal heaters cut into nozzles are simple, reliable and efficient. Modular design is also used: the buyer can configure the required system himself by purchasing additional control devices and battery chargers for a suitable heater. Diesel car owners will appreciate the Calix range of easy-to-install electric tank heaters.

severs

And this is the production of CJSC "Leader". With all the advantages of European heaters, the disadvantage is the price, so the proposals of the Russian manufacturer will not be superfluous.

The range includes simple convection heaters and Severs + models with forced circulation. The heater is supplemented with a timer and a battery charger.

Popular stand-alone preheaters

The German concern with a century of history is known primarily for autonomous heaters. OEM models are produced that are installed on conveyors by car factories themselves, and kits for self-assembly.

Each such set is created for a specific machine and therefore gets up with a minimum of possible modifications. For control, own blocks are used, interfaced with the heater by a proprietary digital bus. It is used in conjunction with modern alarm systems - for example, StarLine systems were able to control Webasto in the last generation. Thus, the start of the heater is carried out according to the timer and by command from the alarm key fob and mobile phone.

Eberspacher

The second German "titanium", the brand of which did not become a household name, except perhaps because of the difficulty of pronunciation for the Russian language. Branded Hydronic heaters are universal blocks, completed for a specific car model with their own installation kit. Separately for cabins, Airtronic air heaters are produced - they are relevant for commercial vehicles, where the driver can spend the night in the cabin in winter, while it makes no sense to spend fuel on constantly heating the engine all night.

Teplostar

The Samara manufacturer will be of interest to many: the prices for Webasto or Eberspacher products were considerable before the crisis, but now they have doubled. Teplostar's lineup includes models of starting heaters designed for different engine sizes, for different fuels and on-board network voltages. An interesting feature of the company is that the heaters are equipped with GSM modules: you can turn on the heater if you wish, from your own phone.

Video: Installing the Longfei engine pump heater

The problem of engine wear is one of the biggest headaches of every car owner. The start-up in the winter season is especially strong for the life of the power unit, when, due to frost, the motor needs much more power to start working. In order to prevent a sad outcome, it is enough to use a 220V engine preheater with a pump. However, not everyone knows which model is better and why. To help you deal with this, we have created our own ranking, which presents the best models on the market.

No. 7 - Simate (Simat) (PRC)

Our list opens with a product created by Asian engineers - Simate (Simat). It is quite easy to install, in other words, like most other electric car heaters. Inexpensive in terms of price (from 1500 rubles), the model is equipped with an efficient pump, which ensures efficient pumping and, as a result, heating of the coolant. At the same time, it does not matter in which car you use the heater - in a car or a truck. The device is equipped with a special thermostat and overheating protection, so its service life is much longer than that of competitors. The same can be said about the safety of operation.

Simate engine preheater

No. 6 - Hot Start (USA)

The American company Hot Start is one of the market leaders and has been known for 75 years for producing only the best 220V engine preheaters with a pump. The company's products can reduce the cost of a motorist for fuel, fuel and lubricants and various repair services, since it significantly increases the life of the engine. Each, without exception, the model is made in accordance with international standards and certified according to ISO 9001, which guarantees the quality of workmanship and a high level of safety. You can buy a device at a price of 2000 rubles, and for your money this is an excellent choice.

Hot Start Engine Preheater

No. 5 - Start-Turbo (Russia)

A Russian-made product cannot boast of ease of installation, and for high-quality installation, an inexperienced car owner will have to seek help from a special center. However, this disadvantage is fully compensated by the excellent technical performance of the heater and its reliability. For example, antifreeze is heated up to 49 degrees, after which an emergency shutdown occurs until the temperature drops. The time required for the car to start is significantly reduced, and after it there are no various noises and malfunctions that are familiar to every driver. Even in winter, for the first time after launch, the car will drive at a decent level of traction. The price starts from 1800 rubles.

Engine preheater Start-Turbo

No. 4 - Longfei

Contrary to many negative reviews, Longfei products are one of the most popular on the market. The opinions of users differed - some praise the performance indicators and affordable price, while others, on the contrary, complain about frequent marriage and various malfunctions. Thus, when buying a device, you do not know whether you will be lucky or not. However, it is worth noting that if luck is still on your side, you will have at your disposal one of the best heaters on the market.

The power of the model is 3 kW, the coolant is heated by a heating element, and the antifreeze is run by a centrifugal pump. Power is supplied by connecting to a conventional 220V power supply, while there is a small drawback - the cord of the model is short, so you have to fork out for an additional extension cord. The question of dimensions disappears - Lunfei can be equally well used for both cars and trucks. In stores, the price of this heater is usually equal to 4300 rubles.

Longfei engine preheater

No. 3 - Atlant (Russia)

The bronze medalist of our rating was another product of domestic engineers - an electric engine preheater Atlant. It is assembled, I must say, quite reliably and firmly. If you disassemble the device, you can find that there are gaskets between the contacts that prevent the risk of short circuits. All body materials are of high quality and not flimsy. The wires are made of copper, and the frame of the motor is made of metal plates. The heating element is a monolithic plate with longitudinal ribs.

In work, Atlant shows itself worthy - heating occurs quickly, due to which the time required for the machine to start is reduced by 2-3 times. After starting, the car drives confidently and quietly. This is precisely the reason that the domestic product has collected so many laudatory reviews in its address. If you are looking for a decent heater, then Atlant is the best choice. You can buy it at a price of 3150 rubles.

Engine preheater Atlant

No. 2 - Severs + - (Russia)

The Severs preheater is the pride of Russian engineers who managed to create a truly successful product that is an ideal combination of price and quality. The device is built into the car's cooling system and when connected to the network, the heating element, which is located in the housing, begins to warm up the circulating antifreeze. At the same time, the circulation pump is also started, pumping the heated liquid through the cooling system. When the required temperature mark is reached, the thermostat automatically switches off the heating element and the pump. As soon as the indicator drops below the set mark, a restart occurs. This means that the coolant temperature is always within the specified range. According to measurements, after half an hour of operation of the heater, the temperature of the coolant is 70 degrees - and this is a lot in comparison with competitors. Device power: 2 kW. As for the price, everything is quite democratic here - 2100 rubles.

Severs+ engine preheater

#1 - OWL

The result of the work of German engineers, the OWL heater, topped our rating. It is assembled extremely reliably, all components are of the highest quality and equipped with the necessary safety equipment. Due to its compact dimensions, namely the small width of the body between fittings of 3.5 cm, it can be installed directly on hoses without resorting to adapters. brackets and tees. OWL is suitable for all vehicles and engines.

Installing the device is not difficult even for a novice car owner. This is a huge advantage of the model over domestic devices. OWL is equipped with a built-in thermostat that turns off the heating system when the temperature reaches 60 0 C. When it drops to 40 0 C, the system turns on again. The device performance of 1.1 kW was called optimal by many experts, since at such values the heat from the liquid spreads in the cylinder block slowly enough not to provoke sudden temperature changes and local boiling of antifreeze in those places where it comes into contact with the heating element. This model cannot be called affordable, after all, its price is about 7,000 rubles, but this is due to a decent level of reliability and good performance.

Engine preheater OWL

On the eve of winter, many car owners began to think about how best to prepare their vehicle for it. Basically, all such preparations come down to a banal replacement of rubber, oil, battery (or recharging it) and other "cosmetic" activities. However, few people dare to approach this issue more thoroughly, but in vain ... After all, if, for example, a car engine does not start due to severe frost, then new tires and a battery will not help you leave the parking lot or poorly insulated garage.

Given this fact, it is not at all superfluous to turn your attention to such a device as an engine preheater, since in any weather and under any circumstances it will be able to provide a quick, and most importantly trouble-free start of the engine. Of course, it is best to purchase such a device ready-made, as they say “from the manufacturer”, but if you wish and have skilled hands, you can make it yourself, even if it sounds a little unrealistic. In any case, the main thing is to delve into the details of the work and deal with all the possible nuances, and then it’s a matter of technology, there would be an instruction. This is exactly what we will talk about today, but first a little theory ...

1. The path traveled: blowtorches - a modern electric preheater

As you know: “everything new is a long forgotten old”, although personally I would slightly change this statement and instead of the word “forgotten” I would use the concept of “improved”. But the way it is, many modern devices have a very interesting history of their development. What our ancestors did not think of: an iron iron on coals, the first car resembling a cart with a motor, etc. In this regard, the aforementioned preheater and if you turn to history, you can find many interesting facts related to this device. For example, do you know that the “great-grandfather” of modern designs is the most common blowtorch, the alternative to which (at that time) was perhaps the equally well-known kerosene (the so-called “kerosene stove”). It was them that our grandfathers and great-grandfathers so cleverly used in many areas of their life.

Of course, the functions and capabilities that these devices possessed cannot be compared with the powerful functional characteristics and numerous advantages of modern equipment, but they still coped with their task, and since this was more or less enough, then they need to be given their well-deserved place in history. . A modern engine preheater, in our time, is used to facilitate starting the engine at low temperatures, and in some cases, also to warm the air in the car.

Regardless of the type and model, all heaters perform approximately the same functions, being responsible for heating and maintaining the temperature of the car's coolant (antifreeze or antifreeze) in the desired range. In addition, the described device can significantly reduce fuel consumption, because it takes much less time to warm up the engine. But the most important advantage of using it is better protection of the resources of the motor unit, which, accordingly, increases its service life.

If we analyze the types and possible varieties of heaters in more detail, then it is worth noting that absolutely all devices are classified using a specific, unified scheme. Based on this, the following main models are distinguished:

- gas heaters;

Devices using liquid fuel for operation;

Heaters powered exclusively by an external source.

As for the latter type, it is precisely to him that the electric pre-heater of the engine considered today belongs.

2. The principle of operation of the electric preheater

Electric type heaters are classified as non-autonomous devices, that is, their operation requires mains power (220 V). Now we will understand in more detail the principle of their work, but first, some interesting facts.

Did you know? The first inventor of the electric motor heater is considered to be Andrew Freeman(Andrew Freeman), who in 1949 received a patent for a coolant heater capable of being screwed in place of one of the cylinder block bolts. In the modern world, electric type heaters are widespread in the northern countries of different states (Russia, USA, Scandinavia, Canadian cities), since it is here that they are in urgent need. What's more, automakers in these regions include them as standard on their cars, and the sockets needed to connect the devices can be found in many multi-storey car parks and car parks.

Electric heaters that exist today are a whole system that consists of several important parts. These include:

- an electronic control unit with a built-in timer; battery recharge unit;

A heating element with a power of 500-5000 W located in a sealed heat exchanger (installed in the technological opening of the cooling jacket, or connected to it using pipes);

Fan heater for interior heating.

In some models, in addition to the listed elements, there is also a built-in pump, the main task of which is to quickly and evenly warm up the engine.

A standard electric heater is presented in the form of a spiral device that is inserted into the engine block and operates from an external 220 V power supply. A small electric spiral acts as the main actuating element. During its installation in the cylinder block, an anti-ice plug is removed from it, and the named part is installed in its place. When a current passes through the spiral, under the influence of high voltage, it begins to heat the coolant (). The circulation of fluid in the system is due to natural convection, although it is less productive than artificial movement with a pump (it also takes more time). The most famous representatives of this type of preheater are models Defa WarmUp.

If you store your vehicle in a garage or in a parking lot equipped with electrical outlets, then the use of such a device will be most welcome, otherwise it is impractical to use it (when parking under the windows of the house, you will simply have nowhere to connect the heater, which means there is no sense in it) will). Also, the downside of using is a strong "gluttony", and electricity today is by no means cheap. It would seem that the manufacturers foresaw this drawback and equipped the heater with a special timer that allows you to set the required liquid temperature (when crossing the set edge, the spiral turns off or on), but in practice this could not completely solve the problem.

Standard engine heater options include:

- battery charge;

Heating of the working fluid;

Interior heating by supplying thermal air through the stove.

In general, the working principle of an electric engine preheater is the same as in an autonomous system - also, through the heating of the coolant, heat is transferred to the power unit. The main difference lies in the very method of heating (using an electrical power source), which makes it possible to use an additional function - charging the battery, and in winter, when low temperatures contribute to rapid discharge, this is most welcome.

3. Do-it-yourself engine preheater

If the engine preheater is not included in the standard equipment of the car, but you would really like to have such a device, nothing is impossible. The easiest option is to go to an auto parts store and choose the right model (the installation should not cause many problems, especially since the appropriate instructions should be attached to the device). However, there is another way, which involves the independent manufacture of the desired device. It will take more time, but by doing everything yourself, you can be sure of the quality of the finished product, plus save some money.

And so, in order to create an electric starting preheater, you will need simple materials that are available “in the household” of almost any car owner, these are:

- an incandescent spiral (called a heating element), even suitable from some old kettle;

Metal tank;

Fittings (probably sold in every plumbing store);

Junction box (can be found at an electrical store).

Now, armed with elementary knowledge from the field of electrics, we mount a device that should provide high-quality pre-heating of the power unit, save fuel and maintain engine functionality for a longer service life. When proceeding directly to the actions, one must understand that the task set is not simple, which means that the whole process (both manufacturing and installation) is likely to be accompanied by some difficulties and specific nuances.

Compared to factory (factory) products, a hand-made device will not be clearly and perfectly placed in the engine compartment, so all measurements must be taken to the nearest centimeter. However, this possibility should not be regarded as an insurmountable obstacle, especially if the garage has a lift or viewing hole. If they are not there (which is rare, but it happens), then most likely you will not be able to place all the necessary wires and electrical equipment yourself, since the space under the car will be limited and it will be difficult to climb under it. Also, I want to warn you about the risk of making a homemade heater, because one wrong move and you can get serious problems with the engine.

4. Installing an electric engine preheater

Suppose you have a ready-made (purchased) set of electric preheater and you decide to install it yourself. In this case, at the initial stage, you need to evaluate the space available under the hood and decide where exactly the device will be mounted. This may be a place under, metal parts of the fender liner or a place next to the expansion tank of the cooling system. The latter option is more relevant in the case of installation on an SUV, which often moves through swampy areas. Also, do not forget to check the prepared wiring harness, because its length may not be enough to connect all the nodes together.

Now, as for the control panel. When installing the "commander" in the car, you must immediately determine the free space on the dashboard, where you can bring the control elements (you may even have to dismantle some part of it). Boilers for heating liquids are installed only on a solid foundation, and there should also be enough space around them, because all wires must be placed in a free order and as far as possible from moving mechanisms.

Well, when the preparatory stage is completed, we will consider the entire installation procedure in step-by-step mode:

1. The main part of the electric preheater is fixed to a pre-selected place;

2. Then it is worth checking the quality of mounting the installation, if necessary, you can use special brackets;

3. Next, the fuel intake is installed (either included in the purchased kit, or purchased separately). Installation sites - connection points for filters and fuel hoses, and the procedure is performed using a tee;

4. After that, the electrical system of the heater is connected: the device is powered, and the on / off control is output to the passenger compartment;

5. Now the device can be connected to the cooling system (note: after completing the procedure, you will have to add about 1 liter of liquid to the system);

6. We visually check all connections of the system, they must be strong and reliable;

7. The last step is to check the operation of the preheater: start the engine and observe the result.

The most difficult part of the whole self-installation process is working with electricity, but even if you have to turn to an electrician for help, installing a heater yourself will still cost less than the services of a service center. Another, no less important point of installation is the exhaust from the device system. Since the air stream being thrown out has a high temperature, it is worth avoiding the possibility of it getting on the wires and hoses located under the hood. The best solution to this problem is to direct the exhaust to the crankcase, which will also lead to additional heating of the oil.

Now imagine the following: You have followed all the instructions supplied with the device, connected everything properly, and the electric heater does not work, what should I do? Naturally, when you install the device yourself, the warranty on it is lost, which means that you will have to deal with the problems on your own or turn to specialists, but not for a free consultation.

In any case, it would be best to check the operability of the preheater even before installing it on the vehicle, all of a sudden it is already inoperative, but ... if I knew where you would fall, I would put a mattress on it. However, there are times when everything worked before the installation, and after it the activity stopped. There are several main reasons for this phenomenon: most likely, during installation, the connection of the device to the car’s electrical network was mixed up or the heater itself was damaged; it is also possible that the system simply does not receive fuel and it is necessary to connect it in another way.

If independent attempts to eliminate these causes were not successful, you will have to seek help from specialists. There you can get more thorough answers to all your questions and fix the problem as quickly as possible.

Some car owners connect the heater to, but for this you have to solder the contacts in its block, which requires special skills in electrical engineering. Therefore, if such a thought occurs to you, think twice whether it is worth doing it. In general, we have described only the general points for installing an electric preheater, and you can find out all the subtleties and nuances of this process by reading the instructions or a specific manual for installing a particular brand of device.

An electric engine preheater is a mechanism that allows you to warm up a car engine without starting.

Such a need arises in cold weather. The operation of the heater simplifies the subsequent start-up. Sometimes this device is used for interior heating.

The principle of operation of the electric preheater

Unlike autonomous heaters, electric ones work directly from the 220 V network (from sockets in parking lots, in parking lots).

The heating element heats up the coolant. The temperature distribution occurs when the heated liquid rises.

The device automatically turns off when the set temperature is reached, i.e. it can be left switched on in the parking lot all night without danger of overheating.

Preheater - the latest development of Webasto (Webasto) has significantly smaller dimensions than previous models, which allows the heater to be installed in modern cars with an extremely dense layout of the engine compartment. Engineers managed to reduce not only the overall dimensions, but also reduce fuel consumption by 30% compared to the heaters of the previous series.

Why do you need a Webasto heater?

For warming up the engine before starting and for warming up the car interior. Can work at -40s, can work with the engine running, warming up the coolant to operating temperature.

How does Webasto work?

Fuel is supplied to the combustion chamber of the heater from the car tank, the heat from the combustion of the fuel is collected by a heat exchanger in which the engine coolant circulates, heat is supplied to the passenger compartment from the radiator of the car stove. • Webasto + GSM module
    Zakharchenko Sergey Petrovich November 10, 2018 19:03

    Good afternoon In August, I ordered a Webasto Thermo Top Evo Start GSM engine preheater on the website. The manager Vladimir contacted me and told me in detail about the operation of the heater and the GSM module. After payment, within 2 weeks the transport company brought me the whole set. Everything is neatly packed, the factory packaging is intact and not broken. At my request, Vladimir sent me an email with instructions for installing a heater specifically for my car. In October, I installed a heater and configured the GSM module. I installed the application on my phone and I completely control the heater. And in the cabin there is also a hidden button for directly starting the unit. We now have frosts down to -30 degrees, and the heater works at 100%. I am very satisfied and confident in starting my car in any frost. It remains to test the launch when it is below -40. Toyota Corolla car 2006
