In terms of passenger and cargo capacity, the Barguzin, for obvious reasons, will give odds to any, the most spacious minivan - the cargo origin affects. Despite its short length, the GAZ-2217 is quite capable of carrying not seven, but ten, and even more passengers: its internal width easily allows four seats to be installed in a row. However, to increase comfort - after all, this is a "luxury" version of the "Sable" - the interior was equipped like a "coupe": wider and more comfortable "Volgov" seats with armrests are installed here, and only three of these seats fit in a row.

Unlike the standard for both minivans and minibuses of a similar type of layout (seats one behind the other), in the GAZ-2217 compartment, the front seats are “back to front” “facing” to the rear.

Salon "Barguzin" - the size of a small room: length 2.5 m, width 1.8 m, height 1.33 m. You can easily move from place to place, bending down. In the middle is a reclining table equipped with a regular lamp. What is "Sobol"?

Sable is a workhorse. If in a nutshell. Here, less comfortable conditions for passengers - everything is simple and functional. The car is good for short distance transportation of passengers. What are the main differences between Sobol and Barguzin?

To summarize, the differences between the two models can be summed up in the following points:

  1. Equipment. Both "Sobol" and "Barguzin" have a choice of both diesel and gasoline. However, the former is more common in all-wheel drive, while the latter is not. Also, the Barguzin has an independent front suspension, while the Sobol has both dependent ones.
  2. Appearance. From the outside, both cars are very similar. A distinctive feature is the different structure of the rear doors and the painting of the side windows of the rear view - for the Barguzin they are the same color as the car, for the Sobol they are black. Also, the Barguzin mirrors are equipped with heating and airflow.

There are no special differences, except for the body, in the design of the GAZ 2217 Sobol Barguzin minibus from other "sables". Modern GAZ 2217 and its early variants

Today GAZ 2217 Sobol is offered by the manufacturer in 16 standard versions, all 4x4. It is possible to complete the car according to the schemes of a full permanent drive and a full plug-in drive. Cabins 1+6 or 1+10 (driver and passengers). Body in two versions: with a low and medium roof. Engines: standard Sobolev UMP 4216 (Euro-4 gasoline) and diesel Cumminis (Euro-4). The price fluctuates around 650-800 thousand rubles, depending on the layout. Additional options (differential locks, instrument panels "Lux", color selection, etc.) - for some money.

Also previously there was a modification of Barguzin in the luxury version - Riviera. The price of "lyalechka" is from 710 thousand rubles. The plant today also offers the Sobol-Business option with a superior-comfort saloon, but not much more expensive than ordinary Barguzins. There was also a modification of "Sable-Taxi". A GAZ-5601 turbodiesel was installed on it. The difference between a taxi and other cars is a low roof and only 5 seats for passengers in the cabin. Previously produced GAZ 2217 and rear-wheel drive. Today, judging by the information of the GAZ Group on the corporate website, there are no such products in production. The factory abandoned them in favor of plug-in all-wheel drive and permanent all-wheel drive. Reviews of "minibuses" about rear-wheel drive versions - at least apply to the wound: when fully loaded, the car confidently holds the road, is maneuverable, and economical. The hydraulic booster facilitates the work of drivers. Chrysler DOHC 2.4L was subsequently installed only on the luxury version of the Riviera - this is the only serious difference between Barguzin and the GAZ "fur" community.

Since 2009, the GAZ 2217 has received a standard UMZ-4216.10 (2.89 l, 115 hp) and a Cummins ISF 2.8L turbodiesel (2.8 l, 128 hp) for its counterparts.

Operational and technical characteristics

Disadvantages and advantages

The build quality of domestic cars always leaves much to be desired. For example, in one of the reviews, the happy owner of the Riviera (I remind you that this is the most expensive Sable), immediately after the purchase, discovered the missing step for entering the passenger compartment - the part simply was not screwed on as expected, and flew off somewhere along the way from the passenger compartment. Others complain about the lack of bolts in the required quantity where they should be, or their quick loss after 10-15 thousand km. The cases found on the network are isolated. But - blatant: this should not be!

The main problems that owners of cars that have been released from the assembly line for 4-5 years complain about are: gearbox and transfer case, front axle, power steering hose. These problems start selectively. It seems that different shifts of machines and units are assembled at GAZ using different technologies and from different components. The suspension begins to "harm" almost everyone after 40-50 thousand km. Closer to 100,000 km, ball bearings and struts are expected to be replaced, springs may begin to sag. After 100 thousand km, the car requires careful attention to all remaining original chassis parts as a whole.

In many reviews, there is a complaint about the absolutely inconvenient location of the fuel pump filter: to get to it, you need to remove the fuel tank. And the towing eye, the need for which has been talked about for 10 years or more, has not appeared at the rear.

Maintenance and repair of cars of early models do not cause any problems for mechanics, but they greatly annoy owners: over the years, cars break down more and more often, and spare parts from new models may differ in size. When ordering parts that were installed specifically on your car, you must accurately indicate their catalog numbers in order to avoid surprises.

Another point (which cannot be attributed to obvious shortcomings, rather to the ill-conceived layout of the cabin) is a small luggage space at the back. By the way, in different modifications there are two options for the back door: two swing doors (they open well, it is convenient to load, but there are comments about weak locking hooks) or one opening up (on the versions "Prestige", "Riviera", "Taxi" - very convenient) . But through both options you still won’t download much - there’s nowhere.

All drivers note good visibility in the car (both in front and in the rear-view mirrors) and handling. Complaints about the stove (one of the biggest pluses in terms of comfort) were not found in the reviews.

Payback - up to 1 year in the taxi mode, with low operating costs and low fuel consumption for its class. It is the payback that becomes the main reason for buying Sable. Experienced owners of the GAZ 2217 advise squeezing the maximum out of the car up to 200 thousand km and selling it if something remains of it. By such a milestone, a car as a “minibus” pays off twice.

But by 200 thousand mileage, there is practically nothing left in the car, except for the native engine and frame, strong vibrations are observed throughout the body, defects in its poor-quality assembly are fully manifested. The last statement is debatable, since (see above) - different shifts of workers assemble different identical machines. This fact also does not apply to cars of 2013 (another update) - there is still little information on the operation of new cars, it is too early to draw conclusions.

Summary

Let's be brief: the car is worth the money. But in general, Sables are a very successful family of commercial vehicles, we emphasize: namely commercial vehicles. With a smart approach to operation, the machine pays for itself. In addition: it allows you to earn on the same, and leave a little more money brought to the owner. If these “workhorses” are not worked out to the state of “trash on wheels”, then you can still earn extra money on them when selling them - there is a stable demand for used cars. The choice even among the available domestic models today is very diverse. Which one do you prefer? I propose, perhaps unexpected, but not devoid of worldly logic, an answer - or rather, my own version of the answer.

From early childhood I was attracted by cars and roads. Probably, it was necessary to become a trucker, but fate turned out differently - nevertheless, he did not lose his gypsy craving for travel. Overgrown with a family, various hobbies appeared - an ordinary passenger car became small. Imagine this picture: a "nine" with five passengers, a windsurfer on the roof, a trailer with sleeping tents, topped with a huge doghouse, in the back! Even the station wagon will not help out - three children, no matter how angels they are, will inevitably fight in the back seat due to crowding.

Maybe a minivan? But I would probably “change” the all-wheel drive transmission of the only available VAZ “Nadezhda” for an even larger interior. And if the seven-seater "Barguzin" GAZ 2217 (ЗР, 1999, No. 10)? Let this be a minibus - I need one like that! In terms of size and maneuverability, it almost does not differ from the Volga. With a height of 2100 mm, not every garage will enter, but I was lucky - the gate turned out to be with a margin. It is quite nice on the outside and less than other "sables", it looks like a bus or a truck - it is not shameful to bring children to the circus on it, to take your wife to the store, to go on business yourself. Every day, wandering around in such a “chest” to work is perhaps too much - well, not everyone needs it.

I laid eyes on the most affordable modification of the GAZ 2217 -104 with a ZMZ-406 carburetor engine. Prices for it in Nizhny Novgorod start at 205 thousand rubles, in the capital - ten thousand more. There is also a GAZ 2217 -304 for 260 thousand with a GAZ-560 turbodiesel, but this choice is justified only by intensive operation - I can only cover the difference in price by retirement.

According to the factory classification, GAZ 2217 is a luxury minibus. There is only one package: a plastic protective apron on the bottom of the body, fog lights, power steering, tilt and length (!) adjustable steering column, audio preparation with four speakers. And also a headlight corrector, an additional heater in the cabin, a glass sunroof. In general, it remains only to choose a color.

WHAT IS INSIDE?

Wow! Salon "Barguzin" - with a small room: length 2500 mm, width 1800, height 1330 - what you need! You can even move from place to place by crouching. Five comfortable "Volgovsky" chairs, some have armrests. In the middle, a reclining table, even with a lamp, is great: the children will probably lay out toys here, and the wife will serve dinner. Velor upholstery looks rich, and curtains can be fenced off from the world if you want to relax. By the way, even an adult will settle down here - the width allows.

And then I will shoot arrows at those who designed the salon - they obviously did not take into account my interests! All the seats are bolted to the floor, and this completely deprives the owner of the opportunity to adapt the car to specific needs. But it is precisely the variety of transformation options that attract foreign mini-vans and minibuses. This is not provided by the factory - just a few extra holes in the floor! Independent redevelopment is prohibited by the Rules. Show me, gentlemen, designers, that imaginary businessman whose victim I fell? It is for his business negotiations that the salon-compartment is intended.

If you leave everything in it as it is, you will have to put up with offensive shortcomings - for example, go back and forth in the middle row. Fifteen minutes in a trolley bus is all right, but a few hours on the highway is unnatural! And I don’t need seven seats, five are enough, but with all the amenities. The seat backs of the third row are devoid of tilt adjustment, and what could be more pleasant than leaning back on a long trip? The cabin and salon are separated by a low partition - if you please, go around the street. And the trunk - chickens laugh for such a huge car! Moreover, it is half blocked by a spare wheel - could it really not be attached under the floor?

HOW DOES IT GO?

I have known Sobol for a long time and love to ride it: the landing is high, the visibility is excellent, the driver's seat is comfortable. The powerful “406th” motor is a guarantee of good dynamic qualities: you don’t feel flawed even among cars. You need to get used to the steering wheel - at first you move along the road like a drunk: the slightest movement of it turns on the hydraulic booster, which immediately starts turning the wheels. More than two tons of curb weight explain the very high fuel consumption in the city - 15–18 l / 100 km. However, on the highway in economy mode, I fit into the "top ten" - this figure is more important to me. The nose sways noticeably on the waves - the front shock absorbers are rather weak, and on bumps it throws up the stern - for a minibus, the springs should be made softer than for a van.

The Barguzin, like all sables, has mediocre cross-country ability - I got stuck on it in very shallow mud or slush. The reason is the low load on the drive axle of an empty car and the weak “bottoms” of the engine: when you try to drive it stalls, and when gas is applied, it breaks the wheels into slip. By the way, it is precisely in the calculation of a small snowball or ice that an ordinary Mercedes-Sprinter delivery van can be equipped with a limited slip differential - I wonder if GAZ will soon think of this?

IF NOT "BARGUZIN", THEN WHAT?

Only Nadezhda VAZ 2120 can really compete with him for my sympathies and wallet - it is cheaper by about 15 thousand rubles. There is also the Taganrog "Doninvest Orion M", aka "Citroen Berlingo" - also quite spacious, but one and a half times more expensive. And imported classmates - and at all in three-four times. Maybe take some used "Transit"?

GAZ-2217 is built on the basis of an all-metal van, but at the same time it received circular glazing and a ventilation hatch already in the basic configuration. The appearance of the minibus is maximally unified with the van, which can significantly reduce the cost of production or repair of body elements.
Like the van, the second-generation minibus received a new bumper and a radiator grille integrated into it, as well as stylish teardrop-shaped head optics.

Minibus "Sobol-Business" GAZ-2217 has several options for interior layout. The basic version (minivan) received a 7-seater (including the driver) version of the "coupe", which in modifications 2217-244 and 22171-344 is supplemented by a folding table located in front of the rear row of seats.

The Sobol-Business minibus GAZ-2217 is driven by a gasoline or diesel power unit. Both available motors fully fit into the Euro-4 environmental standard and have 4 in-line cylinders.

  • The gasoline engine of the UMZ-4216.70 brand received a working volume of 2.89 liters, a power of 107 hp. at 4000 rpm, as well as 220.5 Nm of torque already developed at 2500 rpm. Depending on the design and configuration of the minibus, the average fuel consumption of a gasoline unit is about 10.0 - 12.5 liters per 100 km. A gasoline engine is installed on modifications 2217-244, 2217-5244, 22171-244, 22177-244, 22177-245, 22177-5245, etc.
  • The Cummins ISF 2.8l diesel unit has a displacement of 2.8 liters, common rail direct fuel injection and a turbocharging system with intercooling of aftercooled air. Its power reaches 120 hp. at 3200 rpm, and the upper torque limit is 297 Nm (1600 - 2700 rpm), while the diesel engine is very economical: 6.6 - 10.2 liters per 100 km, depending on the type of drive and equipment. The Cummins engine is used on modifications 2217-344, 22171-344, 22171-5344, 22177-345, 22177-5344, etc.

All engines of the GAZ-2217 minibus are aggregated with a 5-speed synchronized manual transmission connected to the engine via a Sachs dry single-plate clutch.

We add that in the all-wheel drive versions of the minibus (modifications 221717-244, 221717-345, 221717-5245, etc.), an interaxle locking differential and a 2-speed transfer case with a downshift function are used.

The Sobol-Business GAZ-2217 passenger minibus was created on the same frame platform as the GAZ-2752 van. This means that the front of the minibus received an independent double-lever suspension with gas-filled double-acting telescopic shock absorbers, as well as an anti-roll bar. The rear part of the body of the minibus is supported by a dependent spring suspension with the same gas-filled telescopic shock absorbers and an anti-roll bar.
The braking system of the Sobol-Business GAZ-2217 minibus received two circuits, a hydraulic drive and an ABS system. On the front wheels, the manufacturer uses reinforced disc brakes, on the rear wheels, simple drum brakes are installed. The parking brake of the minibus has a classic cable drive. The steering of the car is built according to the "screw - ball nut" scheme and is already in the base supplemented by an integrated ZF Lenksysteme power steering.
