And, which is especially nice, there is not a drop of “business” in the landing: only a high ceiling and a low glazing line remind you that you are driving an XL passenger car.

Another fashion trend is the on-board computer displayed on the front console. You can argue for a long time on the topic “convenient-inconvenient”, but the fact that accessing information displayed on a blue (in the literal sense of the word) screen uncritically distracts the driver from the road is an indisputable fact.

Well, I liked the “electronic brain” itself with a simple and relaxed interface, as well as a fairly logical algorithm of work.

In general, I would be happy to make a Ford S-MAX company on a long (and not so) trip. And only checks from a gas station can spoil this pleasure - in the line "rub." There are some pretty big numbers on there.

Given the small distance traveled - a significant drawback. But this, in this case, has nothing to do with the topic of "statics".

In dynamics

Expectations to see a traditional family minivan in the parking lot near the office of the Russian representative office of Ford did not come true. Instead, I saw a snow-white S-MAX in the Sport package, with low bumpers, side skirts, 18-inch alloy wheels, tinted rear windows and a panoramic roof. This is not just a minivan, but a real sports van!

As an alternative, there are a couple of naturally aspirated engines, one diesel and a 200-horsepower version of the same 2.0-liter EcoBoost.

After the update, the place of the traditional analog dashboard in all versions except the basic one was taken by the HMI panel with a color screen, borrowed from the Ford Mondeo. The front panel is made of pleasant soft plastic and decorated with panels a la piano lacquer, as well as carbon-look inserts. The door panels are sheathed in leather, and in the expensive versions, a noble cool-white LED backlight spreads throughout the cabin of the S-MAX.

The back sofa consists of three separate armchairs, each of which has individual adjustments in length and inclination of the back. There is enough space in the back row for three adult passengers.

The rear sofa consists of three equal parts, each of which can be adjusted separately. Legroom is more than enough, there is no central tunnel. At the same time, the volume of the trunk becomes minimal - only 285 liters. Having folded the two rear seats, the space becomes significantly larger - 854 liters, and if the second row is also removed, the cubic capacity of the cargo compartment will increase to 2000 liters.

LED daytime running lights are fitted to the Titanium and Sport versions. The Sport trim also features more aggressive bumpers, side skirts, a rear spoiler and 18-inch alloy wheels. The rear view camera can only be installed together with a navigation system.

Under the hood of the test S-MAX, there is a top-end 2.0-liter turbo engine of the EcoBoost family with a capacity of 240 hp. and a maximum torque of 340 Nm. Acceleration is powerful and smooth: already from the first meters S-Max makes it clear that jokes are bad with him. According to the passport, a 240-horsepower minivan from Ford accelerates in 7.9 seconds. At the same time, acceleration is equally powerful both from a standstill and from speed, however, when overtaking, it is better to keep the tachometer needle at least 2000 rpm, otherwise there is a risk of falling into a turbo lag and losing precious seconds.

The Dual Clutch PowerShift transmission runs smoothly and on time. Downshifting is quick, without delay, but in kickdown, when you need to jump a few steps down, the transmission thinks a little longer than you expect.

Unlike fellow Ford Galaxy for the S-MAX, the third row of seats is an option. Depending on the configuration, the boot volume varies from 285 to 2000 liters. There are many opportunities for transformation.

The optional continuous stiffness control system has three operating modes: Comfort, Normal and Sport. In "comfort", the S-MAX does its best to hide the vibrations transmitted to the 18-inch low-profile 235/45 R18 tires. However, the Sport version makes itself felt, and even in the most gentle mode on the potholes, more riders are shaking in order. At the same time, in "Comfort" Galaxy sways on the waves of asphalt, like a yacht in a light storm.

When you press the Sport key, all four shock absorbers are clamped, reactions to small irregularities are aggravated to the limit, hinting that it is better to avoid large pits altogether. But now the Ford S-MAX rides like it's on rails. Any passenger car will envy Derzhak in a turn, and there are virtually no rolls. The power steering pleases with excellent information content and good feedback, the effort on the brake pedal is what you need. However, all these charms can be fully experienced only on roads with high-quality coverage. The Ford S-MAX in the Sport version is a great family car for Europe.

The PowerShift dual-clutch transmission is crisp and slows down only when downshifting a few steps. The suspension stiffness control system is installed only in tandem with ESP and has three modes: Comfort, Normal and Sport. An optional navigation system with a 7-inch screen will cost 50 thousand rubles.

In Russian conditions, I am more impressed with the usual suspension, and damaging an 18-inch disk or scratching an elegant body kit with our roads is easy. The civilian S-MAX steers only a little worse, and provides much more comfort. Yes, and here you need a diesel! Feeding a 240-horsepower EcoBoost is not an easy task, in addition, the tandem of a diesel engine and a PowerShift gearbox works much more smoothly. It is a pity that Ford only offers the already familiar 2.0-liter diesel engine with 140 hp for its minivans. A 200-horsepower unit with a volume of 2.2 liters would come in handy here. But it is available for Mondeo hatchbacks.

Russian prices for the Ford S-MAX start at 985,000 rubles. The basic version of Trend is equipped with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 145 hp, 5-speed "mechanics" and a minimum set of options. The most affordable 140-horsepower diesel version with manual transmission will cost at least 1,130,500 rubles. The surcharge for PowerShift is 78.5 thousand rubles.

How did S-Max so bribe spoiled journalists from all over the world six years ago? Huge volumes of passenger and luggage compartments, high level of comfort and rich equipment? Undoubtedly. There are four petrol engines of 2 and 2.3 liters with a power range from 145 to 240 hp. and one two-liter 140-horsepower diesel. The drive is front, and there are already three gearboxes available: mechanics, automatic and PowerShift “robot”.

But it was the supercharged B5254T3 S-Max that really impressed the jury. He impressed them with his dynamics, which was provided by a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine borrowed from the Focus ST sports model (originally a Volvo development).

Together with the suspensions retuned to a sporty mood, this power unit gave Es-Max a unique “peppercorn”. Two hundred and twenty horsepower for a family car - is it a joke ?! And this, mind you, is not some typical American “full-fledged van” with a V-shaped “eight” like the Chevy Astro, GMC Savana or Ford Econoline, but a minivan with a European character and appearance.

That S-Max steered and accelerated with the intensity of a powerful sedan when needed, but the rest of the time it was a cozy and comfortable family car.

Nowhere cooler

No matter how strange it may sound, but in the details of both the old and updated S-Max it is easy to trace ... the classic canons of American customizing! In fact, this is a radically modified Ford Galaxy! The EUCD platform, also originally Swedish, is identical, but the bodywork has been almost completely redesigned. The roof, for example, is shortened in height by about 7 centimeters (in the slang of customizers, this operation is called chop top’om (“chopped top”) and is rounded down at the rear of the car. And fake air intakes are cut out in the front fenders.

From the "Galaxy" "Max" got only the head optics, the hood, and the lower parts of the doors. At the same time, S-Max can be additionally “dressed” in a sports “suit”, including more aggressive bumpers and sills, as well as eighteen-inch wheels with a pattern like the Focus ST. And under the hood, a new, even more powerful engine is now installed: 2 liters, 4 cylinders, 240 hp. and 340 Nm!

All these changes turn the "top" S-Max into a white crow compared to all other modern minivans, utterly saturated with everyday life. The uniqueness of the "Max" is in its striking appearance, reinforced by a predisposition to impressively fast driving. It's as cool as a family minivan can be!

Minivan without discounts

Despite all the aesthetic and dynamic advantages, S-Max is also incredibly good from a practical point of view!

A minivan, as they say, is also a minivan in Africa. Places - more than enough! The internal volume is so large that the regular climate control system can hardly cope with heating such an amount of air. But on the "optional" third row you sit, if not warm, then at least comfortable - even the seats are adjustable! Moreover, it will be comfortable there not only for children, but also for adults of average build - there is enough space and the seats are as comfortable as those of the passengers sitting in front. But there are also disadvantages - it is inconvenient to get into the third row due to the narrow passage between the door arch and the retracted seat, the air in the legs of third-row passengers warms up very slowly (in severe frosts, it will most likely be uncomfortable), and the music is heard only remotely .

But if necessary, you can get rid of the third row by simply folding the seats, including each one separately. And now, instead of 285 liters, the useful volume is 1171 liters. And if you add up each seat of the second row, you get exactly 2000 liters ... An abyss!

However, I am not yet a family man, so I am more impressed with the dynamic characteristics and the individual options than with the passenger and cargo capacity. In the maximum configuration, the S-Max is fully crammed with all sorts of useful and not very useful devices and simply stylish solutions: seats - with adjustable heating, ventilation and settings memory, a panoramic roof, in the side mirrors - a proprietary blind spot monitoring system BLIS ...

In general, the list of options is impressive: from 3,900 rubles for double locking of locks to 96,500 rubles for an entertainment system with a DVD player. Although I would limit myself to a huge glass roof, a Premium Sound audio system and an IVD CDC stabilization system (complete with “tri-mode” shock absorbers, a hill start assist system, keyless entry and folding mirrors), which personally proved their “suitability” to me.

The minivan passed the EuroNCAP crash test back in 2006 and received a five-star safety rating.

But for a chic Alcantara interior with red stitching and profiled seats, you won’t have to pay extra - they are included in the list of equipment of the Sport version by default. Apparently, this is how Ford wants to justify the numerous accusations about the dullness and dullness of the salons of the pre-styling S-Max.

When you first find yourself behind the wheel of the Max, a distinct feeling does not leave - something is not right here. Ergonomics - absolutely not minivan! The low seating position, sports steering wheel, properly positioned pedals and the lacquered PowerShift preselection lever - all this evokes memories of another Ford, the Mondeo Sport, and does not at all look like the classic “sitting high, looking far away” characteristic of family cars. Although it is also possible to “look far away” in the “Max” - the visibility is gorgeous. The buttons and control levers do not find fault and the eye does not linger on them. And the main attention is attracted by the massive handbrake handle, more like the handle of a travel suitcase.

This minivan is ideally suited not only for carrying passengers and luggage, even in the cramped conditions of a metropolis, but also for maximizing its own speed potential!

The 240-horsepower S-Max is gaining a "hundred" in 7.9 seconds! And his average consumption is only 10 liters of AI-95 per 100 kilometers.

"Daddy, give me a ride to school!"

Bright xenon headlights rapidly appear in the mirrors, and a moment later, the silhouette of a large snow-white minivan rushes through the left window and, blinking goodbye with stoplights, dissolves behind the apex of the next turn. This is how S-Max could be described by half-asleep summer residents, “eyewitnesses”, sedately crawling along winding country paths during our test drive.

The S-Max is amazingly fast and nimble, making you want to not just ride, but really drive it! I would never have thought that the minivan would be remembered for its extremely light behavior and handling, achieved without sacrificing smoothness. Powerful American "vans" due to a significantly larger mass (compare, the weight of the S-Max'a is 1676 kg, the weight of the Chevy Astro is 1954 kg) and much simpler suspension designs will not be able to compete with the "Max" either in races in a straight line, nor in racing on winding paths. And even the almighty V-shaped "eight" will not help them!

The S-Max has only one real opponent - it's the Opel Zafira OPC. But the Zafira of the previous generation is no longer for sale, and the Germans have not yet prepared a “hot” version of the new one. The opponents have the same power - 240 hp, and the Zafira's torque is only 20 Nm lower, so the cars are almost identical in terms of dynamics.

Of course, for this it is worth praising not only the powerful and responsive, without turbolags and holes, the Ford engine, but also the six-speed “robot” PowerShift with two clutches. The preselective transmission is always ready, the gears select the optimal ones and turn them on with a single wave of the eyelashes.

But the biggest difference between the two rivals is that the German car remained a minivan in terms of handling, unlike the Europeanized “American” with its unusual Control Blade multi-link rear suspension and shock absorbers with variable stiffness.

Structurally, such a suspension with sickle-shaped levers and separate springs and shock absorbers allows not only to lower the center of gravity and strictly distribute work functions (levers are responsible for handling, shock absorbers and springs - only for comfort), but also win additional space for the trunk and reduce noise from the rear wheels . True, the ubiquitous MacPherson is in front of the Es-Max.
