The powertrain and gearbox for the new sports car were developed from scratch. The new engine was radically different from the old one. Under the hood placed a V-engine with 10 cylinders. This power unit has become a kind of tribute to the V10 engines from Formula 1.

In the early 2000s, V10 engines were largely phased out in racing cars.

The motor was marked S85B50. He could develop power up to 507 horses, and the maximum torque was 520 Nm. The 40-valve naturally aspirated engine is capable of accelerating the new M-ku to 100 km / h in just 4.7 seconds.

  • each cylinder is equipped with its own throttle valve: each of them is able to change its position up to 200 times per second;
  • the engine is controlled by a high-speed electronic system from Siemens, equipped with three microcontrollers that can perform calculations at a speed of more than 200 operations per second;
  • highly efficient lubrication of the power unit at maximum loads (four oil pumps are responsible for this);
  • the upgraded Bi-Vanos gas distribution system, which ensures efficient engine operation in various modes.

The fuel consumption of the BMW M5 in the back of the E60 in the urban cycle is 22.7 liters per hundred kilometers. On the track, the appetite of this sports car is much less and amounts to 10.2 liters.

Gearbox SMG III - a robot with intelligence

It is impossible to achieve high dynamics on one engine. An important component is the gearbox (gearbox). Sports car from BMW was equipped with a new seven-speed automatic. The transmission was named SMG III. It is able to work in manual mode and in automatic mode. The transition from one gear to another occurs in 65 milliseconds.

As befits a higher being, the M5 had the right to any whim of finishing, but why puzzle over the choice of wood when it would be out of place anyway. Everything has already been thought of for you, so only black leather and aluminum - as the 2004 concept bequeathed. Complete set to "full stuffing" lacks only top-end music. Armchairs know a lot of settings and hug tighter than a mistress, but not at the expense of comfort. Devices with a laconic font are reddened as if of old, and the well-organized M-steering wheel with triggers is still irresistible in appearance and tailored as if for you. Having mastered the iD rive, the M5 pilot can customize anything: suspension stiffness, gas pedal sensitivity, stabilization system ... Only one box has three switching algorithms and as many as eleven options (six in the "manual" and five in the "automatic") rate of fire! There are only two power levels, but this gives rise to such a variety of choices that it easily demolishes the tower. This later comes the understanding that only two basic options are enough for life, the P400 (400 hp) to throw up in traffic jams to work and the P500 (the same 507 hp), when, having escaped from the office, you rush towards the separation from Friday to Monday. Twelve years ago it was the ecstasy of a techie and the dream of a street racer, now it's nothing special. Like acceleration to hundreds in 4.7 seconds. The level is only the current 540th.


But the emasculated, emotionless accelerations of modern cars are nothing compared to the fury that lives in the latest atmospheric M5. Take the risk of pressing the M button on the right spoke of the steering wheel, putting all systems on full alert, and one of two things will happen - you will either sob with delight, or crap yourself like a one-year-old baby. Furiously spinning the wheels, trying to catch a hook, the emka takes off with a roar. The first two gears are only warm-ups, but the remaining five will not let you get bored. Perceptible pickup, starting at 4,000 rpm, is replaced by even more frantic and protracted acceleration after 5,000 and until the cut-off at 8,250 rpm.

Unprecedented power just smears you on the seat, leaving on your face a blissful smile of an idiot with bulging eyes. The rumble and clang of the gearbox at every gear change shakes the body and throws your body forward, forcing you to hang on the seat belt. If it's not enough for you, activate the P500 Sport mode with even sharper reactions to gas or test the launch control after writing a will.


This whole attraction is available not only on the straight, where the emka, without blinking an eye, accelerates from a hundred to two hundred in 8.5 seconds. Equipped with a reinforced aluminum suspension adapted for increased loads, flaunting almost “half” weight distribution and an adjustable locking rear differential, the M5 enters any turn exactly along the intended trajectory without slowing down. And when necessary, the "emka" can be accommodating and not annoying, like a regular three-liter "five". Dense, but not rigid, which means that the suspension is familiar to BMW. The five-liter V 10, which until recently seemed to be an unbalanced psycho, in the civilian mode of the P400 is just a darling, conquering with its elasticity. It’s a little more difficult with a robot: it won’t replace a full-fledged machine gun, it didn’t work out smoothly, but the SMG III is not as terrible as it is painted.


Truly, 2010 was a black day for all adherents of the devilish cult. The world has never seen such a hardcore and brutal M5 either before or since (at the moment, at least). Which demon whispered to the Bavarians to shake and mix the essence of the Dodge Viper in half with L amborghini D iablo and stuff it into the back of the "five" is no longer important. We will remember, miss and be afraid at the same time!

Purchase History

Who said that you need to grow and ripen to M5? Nicholas is generally the first BMW! Prior to that, he drove a Subaru Impreza WRX for several years, but when you are offered to exchange it for an emka, it is not customary to refuse. So, almost a year ago, having avoided long searches and trips to other cities, Nikolai became the owner of the 2005 M5 E60.


Repair

BMW, imported into Russia in 2008, before Nikolai managed to visit only two neat owners. The condition was appropriate: a well-groomed interior and, most surprisingly, a whole body in native paint. Even "improving", except for that made by one of the previous owners, the M5 was avoided.



There were no major problems with the car. Almost immediately after the purchase, the idle valve was replaced (40,000 with work), and a little later, the throttle. The previous owner warned that the fuel pump on this car is akin to consumables. Nikolai was ready for this, but decided to try another solution by installing a more efficient AEM fuel pump. The part itself is slightly larger than the regular one, but it got up without problems. The price is almost two times lower, and most importantly, almost 10,000 km already - no problem.

Exploitation

In less than a year, Nikolai drove a little more than 10,000 km on the M5. The car is used as a daily.

Expenses

The most difficult thing was to find a competent service, but this problem has already been solved. Consumables do not cost space money: front brake disc - 12,000 rubles, front pads - 10,000 rubles. Rubber should also be attributed to consumables - rear tires, if you sometimes allow yourself to be pranks, will not last even a season. Regarding oil care, it appears irregularly and consumption does not exceed 500 ml per 1000 km.


Plans

The precepts and efforts of previous owners will not be violated: the main plan is to keep the car in decent condition, drive and enjoy. There will definitely be no tuning: Nikolai does not see any point in this.

Model history

The fourth M 5 appeared in 2005, two years after the debut of the original "five" E60. The main news was the appearance under the hood of the S 85 engine, specially designed for this generation of "emki". In most markets, the outlandish V 10 with a capacity of 507 hp, which accelerated the M5 to the first hundred in 4.7 seconds, was paired with a seven-speed “robot” SMG III. But for North American-specially, a six-speed manual was in the base.

In 2007, the range of bodies was replenished with the Touring station wagon, which had previously been found only in the second generation of the model. The history of the most unusual emka in the history of the model ended in 2010. In total, almost 20,000 sedans and just over a thousand fourth-generation M5 station wagons were produced.

To understand the peculiarity of this engine, you need to understand what kind of unit it is. Namely, this is a high-revving V-shaped ten-cylinder engine, with a volume of 5.0 liters without any turbocharging, as is done in our time. This engine was created from scratch specifically for the EM-fifth, that is, they did not improve or modify the previous ones, but straight from scratch.

Now let's look at the technical indicators of this motor. Power - 507 hp available at 7750 rpm, torque 520 Nm at 6100 rpm. From standstill to hundreds of cars accelerates in 4.7 seconds, the maximum speed is limited to 250 km / h. The average consumption is 15 liters in the combined cycle. It’s clear that the owner of such a car often gets stuck and the consumption was at least 20 liters.

The gearbox is Getrag's seven-speed SMG III robot. This box switched gears in 65 milliseconds.

Those who drove the BMW M5 E60 know and feel the irresistible charisma of this car, the sound and thrust of this engine and excellent handling.

And now, the new M5 F10 is equipped with an already turbocharged 4.4-liter eight-cylinder unit that produces 555 horsepower and 680 Newtons of torque. Shoots up to a hundred in 4.4 seconds, while eating 9.9 per hundred of gasoline.

That's why they replaced that engine, because although it is wonderful, companies need to keep up with the times, use more technological methods in order to increase power, traction and, at the same time, reduce fuel consumption. As it happened with interchangeable engines.

Reliability, problems and repair of the BMW M5 E60 S85 engine

According to the established tradition, each new M5 is getting bigger and bigger, this also applies to the M5 E60, which has begun to weigh indecently a lot. Therefore, 400 hp. the old S62 would not have been enough to successfully compete with the fast Audi RS6 and Mercedes-Benz E55 / E63 AMG. Unlike all previous engines that were developed on the basis of civilian engines, the S85B50 was designed from scratch and was used in the design of the sports P84 / 5, which was used on the F1 Williams FW27 car.
The BMW S85 engine received a lightweight aluminum cylinder block with 10 cylinders arranged with 17 mm offset and a camber angle of 90°, without sleeves. There are also oil nozzles for piston cooling and an aluminum oil pan. The block is similar in design to the N52. Reinforced forged crankshaft, lightweight forged connecting rods, 140.7 mm long, aluminum alloy pistons, under compression ratio 12 and with a compression height of 27.4 mm.
The S85 cylinder heads are aluminum, 4 valves per cylinder, with hydraulic lifters, and Double-VANOS variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust shafts (similar to that of the S62). Adjustment of intake camshaft 60°, exhaust 37°. Camshafts on M5 E60: phase 268/260, rise 11.7 / 11.5 mm. Inlet valves diameter 35 mm, exhaust valves 30.5 mm, stem thickness 5 mm. At the inlet, 10 throttle valves are installed in 2 rows of 5 pieces, each cylinder has its own and a receiver optimized for them. Nozzle performance - 192 cc. Exhaust manifolds 5-1, equal length, one catalyst for each. Controls the engine M5 E60 brain DME MS S65.
All this allows you to get 507 hp. at 7750 rpm from 5 liters of working volume and spin the engine up to the limit of 8250 rpm.
The BMW S85 engine was installed on the M5 E60 / E61 and on the M6 ​​E63 / E64.
For the younger model M3 in the back of the E92, the S85 engine was simplified and received the name S65B40.
They replaced the S85B50 in 2010, along with the production stop of the M5 E60 and the new turbocharged V8 S63 ​​was installed on the BMW M5 F10.

Problems and disadvantages of BMW S85 engines

The M5 E60 motor has a problem with premature wear of the connecting rod bearings (on all versions of the S85B50), which require replacement every 80 thousand km. It is better to carry out such work in advance so as not to get global troubles with the motor. Vanos also require periodic repairs, although not so frequent. Otherwise, the motor is normal, if it was looked after, did not overheat, was serviced with high quality and on time. Most often, everything goes wrong, so diagnostics are required before buying an M5 E60 or M6 E63.

S85 Atmo. Stroker

The S85 motor already from the factory has a high power relative to its displacement and is quite strongly wrung out, but there is still some margin left. The simplest and most commonly used way to boost the performance of an E60 M5 is to buy a non-catalyzed sports exhaust (like the Supersprint), a Gruppe M intake, a pulley and a matching brain tuning. This will give about 50 hp. If you add 294/282 camshafts, Dinan throttles to this set and tune in, then the M5 E60 will show 580+ hp. This whole set will allow you to drive 1/4 mile in 12 seconds. There are also stroker kits that increase the displacement from 5 liters to 5.8 by installing a long-stroke 82 mm crankshaft and 94 mm pistons, or standard 92 mm (the volume will be 5.6 liters). M5 E60 with a volume of 5.8 liters and with all the above set, will show 620-630 hp.

S85 Compressor

A cheaper alternative to atmospheric tuning of the M5 is the purchase of a whale compressor. The most common and proven option is ESS. Kit ESS S85 VT2, based on Vortech V3Si, will inflate 0.5 bar into the stock motor and allow you to remove 650 hp. A fairly reliable way to get good power. Don't forget to buy ESS connecting rod bearings. Increasingly powerful whales require serious cash injections and imply a loss of reliability.

For the first time, the BMW M5 E60 was presented to the public in the form of a concept in 2004 at the International Motor Show in Geneva, and already in 2005 the production of a “charged” car began, which replaced it.

The differences in the car were amazing, it was already a completely different “five M series”.

The BMW M5 E60 was produced, as well as serial, at the BMW plant in Dingolfing, northeast of Munich.

Equipment

The car is equipped with an advanced dynamic stability control system developed jointly by Teves and BMW. The DSC system cannot be completely disabled on a sedan equipped with a manual transmission (dated before September 2007), however, a free software update could subsequently be requested, which would allow DSC to be deactivated.

Due to the fact that such vigorous driving requires considerable cooling of the brakes, in order to make room for the air distributor, the front fog lamps had to be removed.

The M5 E60 is equipped with ventilated and perforated disc brakes, 14.7-inch front and 14.6-inch rear. The rotor consists of two parts - aluminum inner and cast iron outer, which are connected with steel pins. In addition, the front calipers have a double piston.

The E60S is equipped as standard with cast radial spoke alloy wheels with a unique design (known as "Style 166M"). These are 8.5 x 19-inch wheels at the front (with 255/40ZR19 tires) and 9.5 x 19-inch at the rear (with 285/35ZR19 tires).

Unlike other E60 models, the tires used on the M5 have a conventional structure. In some markets, the sedan was also offered as an option forged, polished wheels "Style 167M", similar to those used on and. These wheels are 8.5 x 19 inches in front and 9.5 x 19 inches in the rear.

Interior

The cabin in the M5 E60 contains the following features:

  • unique 381mm 3-spoke steering wheel that contains tricolor stitching on the rim and SMG gearshift paddles
  • special instruments with aluminum frame, white illumination, red arrows, speedometer with a mark of 330 km / h and an oil temperature gauge under the tachometer
  • for driving comfort, a Head-Up Display M was additionally installed projecting the vehicle speed, engine speed and gear shifting (in vehicles equipped with SMG) on a 6.3-inch screen in front of the driver on the windshield
  • Merino leather upholstery with active ventilated seats
  • 'M5' logo door sills, driver's footrest and three interior trims

On the navigation bar there was a button labeled "M", which activated one of three modes:

  • P400 (engine limit to 400 hp) - normal daily driving;
  • P500 (gross power of 500 hp);
  • SP500 (full power and sharp throttle response, selectable from the IDrive menu called M Drive Settings;

The P400 program was launched by default, and P500 through the IDrive menu, and then activated through the "M" button.

Engine

Although the M5 E60 engine is heavier than its predecessor, however, given that an additional two cylinders were installed in the power unit, and the maximum power increased by 25% compared to the 8-cylinder engine, this weight increase can be considered insignificant.

The performance of the engine as a whole is amazing, it is already the character of not just a car, but the best racing sports car. Among other things, it was the first gasoline engine developed by BMW, and the main highlight was that, unlike other engines with Valvetronic (which used countless valves to eliminate the throttle) in this engine, individual throttles with electric drive.

A dual-flow exhaust system (made of stainless steel) was also installed, four oil pumps, the operation of which ensures effective lubrication even with maximum lateral overload.

Naturally, to ensure the normal operation of such a multifunctional complex system, it is necessary to use powerful computer technology. Thus, a computer was installed on board the car, which in one second could perform about 250 million operations and adjust the operation of the throttle valves 200 times. Since a conventional gearbox is not able to ensure the smooth execution of all operations, I had to work on it.

Despite the negative comments aside, the new chassis, complex interface and harshness of the transmission, the M5 E60 was a huge success.

The S85B50 engine also allows you to make a powerful jerk with smoke from under the wheels. But, for those who do not want to burn rubber in vain, the “Launch Control” system has been installed, with which you can perform the most effective start. To do this, you need to move the gear lever forward, add gas and at the moment of start - lower it down.

Transmission

The M5 received a third-generation 7-speed sequential transmission with an electro-hydraulic drive - which was operated both in manual and automatic modes.

Manual shifting was also possible using paddles on the steering wheel.

Unlike the previous SMG systems used in the (SMG I) and (SMG II), the SMG III was designed from the ground up to work in conjunction with the S85 engine.

The speed of gear shifting has increased significantly, switching takes place in 65 milliseconds. Also, it became possible to fully control the operation of the transmission, using new gearbox settings (11 Drivelogic settings were available in total (5 in automatic mode, 6 in manual mode)). In addition to the fact that the box transferred energy from the engine to the wheels, it also made driving easier. So, when drifting and on a slippery road, the box automatically switched to neutral mode, in order to avoid dangerous situations.
