Viscosity comparison between synthetic and mineral oil

Engine oils 0w40They are all-weather synthetics, which are recommended to be filled in in winter. However, they perfectly protect the engine in the summer season.

Indicators and marking 0w40

EXTREME FOR OIL

What will we check? It is necessary to catch all the parameters that affect the operation of the motor in a terrible cold, and when it's hot around. To do this, we had to modify our methodology for resource tests.

The limiting cold start temperatures will be determined by the pour point and the conditional crankshaft cranking temperature. The latter is indirectly affected by the viscosity index. Comparative costs of starter power during a cold start allow us to estimate the moment of mechanical losses of the engine.

To make the engine start easier, the oil must be less viscous. But after all, both the wear rate and friction losses depend on the viscosity ( ZR, 2008, No. 3). Therefore, it is important to know what the "zeros" will bring at equally extreme positive temperatures: we will artificially raise the temperature of the oil in the sump, specially heating it. To do this, we will cut nozzles washing the pistons into the oil line. Control measurements of temperature showed that it increased by 15 ... 20 °C.

That's not all! Both cold and heat increase the rate of deposit formation. Frost promotes the growth of low-temperature deposits in the oil channels, and high temperatures increase the level of contamination of the combustion chamber, including the most dangerous variety - varnishes deposited on the side surfaces of the pistons and on the valve guides. They interfere with the normal operation of the rings and can lead to stuck valves, which is equally unpleasant. We will also check the level of these deposits during a long life test.

All zeros, as expected, showed very good low-temperature properties. But what is interesting: the two main parameters that characterize the starting conditions in cold weather are the pour point and the conditional crankshaft cranking temperature, as it were, in antiphase! See for yourself: the record pour point was found in Castrol EDGE: as much as -52 ° C, but it also has the highest conditional cranking temperature: “only” -25 ° C! And Liqui Moly has the opposite picture: the first indicator is worse than the others, but the second is better. Perhaps the most balanced are Motul 8100 X-max and Mobil 1. And their freezing temperature is not bad: -48 ° С, and the cranking temperature is quite low: -29 ... - 28 ° С. For the middle Russian latitudes and even for the North, this is optimal. By the way, these oils have the highest viscosity index: 190. Well, Motul 8100 X-max also distinguished itself by the lowest power that the starter needed to spin up to starting speed.

We look at the table of low-temperature deposits: they will grow in the winter in the first place. Here, as for any dirt, the principle “soil less - clean clean” works. The amount of contaminants is determined by the composition of the base oil, and the quality of their cleaning is determined by the structure and volume of the additive package. Here the Motul 8100 X-max looks better than others.

IN SUMMER

On the base mineral water, wear in hot conditions turned out to be quite noticeable: the motor obviously had a hard time. The masters worked much better: this is clearly seen in the wear values ​​of the piston rings and bearing shells. The parameters of power and fuel consumption, periodically measured during the tests, also confirmed the observations. The best results were shown by oils with the highest viscosity index - Motul 8100 X-max and Mobil 1. With an equivalent viscosity in cold weather, such oils have a viscosity that is closer to optimal universal high-temperature viscosity, which ensures stable formation of lubricating layers that protect against wear and reduce friction. And the lowest level of high-temperature deposits was shown by Castrol EDGE and the same Motul 8100 X-max.

So, we can say that even a new ice age will not prevent us from starting the engine. Unless, of course, synthetics of class 0W-40 are filled there. And there is no need to change it before the summer heat either: with this oil, the engine feels confident even when overheated.

WHAT AND HOW WE DEFINED

- Kinematic viscosity- the most important parameter of the oil, which determines its performance and applicability to various types of engine. It was determined according to GOST 33–2000 at temperatures of 40 and 100 ºС, as well as at 20 and 150 ºС using the SPbSPU method. Further, the obtained values ​​were approximated for the entire temperature range using special methods.

- Viscosity index- the most important parameter of the viscosity-temperature characteristic (VTX) of engine oil, calculated from the values ​​of kinematic viscosity at different temperatures. It characterizes the degree of "flatness" of the BTX, that is, the difference between the viscosity values ​​​​at low and at high temperatures.

- Conditional crankshaft cranking temperature- the temperature at which the viscosity reaches a value of 5000 cSt, conventionally taken as the crankshaft cranking limit. It is determined by calculation - by interpolation of the measured VTX for low temperature conditions.

- Pour point- the one at which the oil loses its fluidity. Determined according to GOST 20287–91.

- Low temperature deposits- are formed as a result of decomposition, polymerization and oxidation of oil at temperatures of about 90 ... 120 ºС. They were determined by accurately weighing the control weight elements - the oil pump fungus and the oil separator mesh in the valve cover.

- High temperature deposits- are formed during the decomposition of oil in the zone of operation of the piston group. They were determined similarly to the ELV method using an expert assessment of the amount and color of deposits on the side surface of the piston after long-term tests of a full-scale engine.

Why is it that the most intensive wear occurs at the moment of starting the engine? The fact is that the plain bearings used in the crank mechanism and other mating parts work with inevitable friction against each other. Ideally, there should always be an oil layer between the main bearings, connecting rod bearings and the crankshaft.

In practice, everything happens differently. The crankshaft elements are lubricated under pressure. Oil is supplied to the lubrication points through special channels. When the crankshaft is turned by the starter, there is still not enough oil pressure to supply it to all rubbing parts. As a result, mechanical friction appears between them. Harder metal literally begins to plan and flatten the soft one. On liners, camshaft cams, valve bushings and cylinder walls, microseizes are formed, which further worsen sliding, and engine life is significantly reduced.

In addition, dry friction is always accompanied by an increase in the temperature of the parts, violating the structure of the metal. Especially dangerous is the "dry" start of the engine in severe frost. Many people know firsthand how much sawdust and even shavings flow down together with used oil from the engine sump, which was intensively used in the cold winter period.

Engine oil thickened in the cold exacerbates the situation even more. In this case, the salvation for the engine is the ability of the oil to form a film on the surfaces of all parts. It is this oil film that works until the oil pressure rises and its flow arrives through the supply channels.
In the old days, when many engines did not have pressurized lubrication, their mileage to capital was simply ridiculous by today's standards: only a few tens of thousands of kilometers. In those days, each driver, in addition to the main tool, also carried with him special molds for melting babbitt. Are you ready to build a fire today in severe frost, remove the engine pan and melt new liners? If yes, then this article is not for you.

All engine oils with the 0W40 index are universal for use in all temperature conditions. Even in the conditions of the Arctic cold, such an oil retains its fluidity without thinning and not rolling off drops from rubbing parts.

When is the best time to use 0W40 oil?

These types of oils perfectly retain their fluidity and enveloping properties at low temperatures, which means that they are perfectly pumped by the oil pump and begin to “work” already at extremely low crankshaft speeds. This property is indispensable in winter, especially in temperate latitudes with cold and long winters. But, will oil with a low temperature index of 0W behave well in summer? After all, there are oils with a higher “summer” index, for example, 50 or even 60. Modern engines experience higher dynamic, temperature and pressure loads. Have you seen how butter gathers in drops in a hot frying pan?

At extremely high temperatures, the oil may lose its lubricating properties. If this happens in the engine, for example, when standing in a summer traffic jam for a long time, it will inevitably fail even with a working cooling system. Therefore, engine oil must retain its lubricating and heat dissipating properties even at very high temperatures.

0W40 brand motor oils are universal all-season oils due to the retention of their lubricating properties in aggressive conditions over a wide temperature range. Such oil can be used in any seasonal conditions on a known good, unworn engine.

Other properties of motor oils

Equally important is the presence of various auxiliary additives in engine oil. Often it is additives that largely determine the physical and chemical properties of modern motor oils. Many lubricant manufacturers widely advertise their products, focusing on the various properties of additives. For example: washing, restoring, cooling, etc. In terms of additives, the opinions of experts and ordinary motorists differ greatly. Of course, no additives are able to restore worn parts, but some of them are able to fill microseizes and microcracks, thereby extending the service life of many engine components and assemblies.

On the other hand, is there a guarantee that the reducing additives will act "targeted" - settling only on damaged surfaces without clogging the oil channels and not accumulating in the form of indelible deposits? The so-called "detergent" additives, on the contrary, contribute to the effective cleaning of lubricated parts from carbon deposits, slag, coke and other deposits that occur for various reasons (use of inappropriate fuels and lubricants or their poor quality, violation of operating conditions or engine operation as a result of a breakdown of some or systems, etc.).

Detergents in motor oil are undoubtedly useful. Engine parts even visually become much cleaner. However, do not forget that oils with detergent additives should be used for a short period of time. Otherwise, you can get the opposite effect. For example: oil, having washed off all deposits on the parts of the gas distribution mechanism, clogs the oil filter with these deposits, or even worse: it transports these deposits directly to the lubrication channels of the crank mechanism. Such a “disservice” of detergent additives can only please mechanics - minders for giving them a good income.

Another, no less unpleasant side of an oil wash is the appearance of streaks at the junctions of blocks and engine parts. The fact is that detergent additives are so effective that when there is nothing to wash, they begin to wash deposits from the joints: gaskets, bolts, studs. As a result, the oil begins to squeeze out. Therefore, oils containing a large amount of such additives should only be used to eliminate certain problems, for example, to effectively clean the engine from internal deposits without completely disassembling it.

Along with additives that help clean parts, many types of motor oils, especially mineral oils, are able to form deposits themselves as a result of exposure to high temperatures in combination with an influx of oxygen. Simply put, the oil begins to burn, leaving carbon deposits on the surface of rubbing parts. For example, when oil burns out in cylinders, instead of a saving oil film, soot is formed, which has strong abrasive properties. And this means that at the moment the oil burns, an emery wheel passes along the mirror of the cylinders of your engine. Is it worth explaining further how this affects its resource?

Flame resistance, low volatility - these properties are as important in summer as oil's ability to keep fluid in winter. Modern synthetic oils, including those with the 0W40 index, have the ability to withstand high temperatures without significant evaporation and are more resistant to oxidative chemical reactions (burning).

Along with physical properties, motor oils, as well as the additives contained in them, are capable of entering into various chemical reactions with metals at high temperatures. If for some reason there is no data on the possibility of using engine oils of the appropriate viscosity, in extreme cases it is advisable to be guided by the rule: the more revving the engine, the less viscous oil it needs for optimal operation. If the engine is worn out, has a high mileage, then vice versa: the greater the mileage, the greater the viscosity of the oil.

At higher speeds, the oil worked less efficiently than when driving in normal mode. Oil burnout affected the quality of the oil film, and when examining the motor, the surface of the parts was in a small black soot, which indicates that this product cannot cope with elevated temperatures and burns out a little, not critical, of course, for such operation, but that’s all same. The coating indicates that the oil will not provide good lubrication of the parts, which will lead to increased wear, and therefore, the motor will collapse faster than we would like.

If you like this brand and you fill in Castrol 0w40 in a piston, then it is advisable to flush the engine with SAE 40 oil or long-term flushing before changing so that the newly filled oil works efficiently and the parts remain as clean as possible. In the case of aggressive operation of the car, it is advisable to do a change once every 8-10 thousand km. And do not forget to check the oil level and top up, it is absolutely impossible to leave the turbo engine without lubrication.

But as for its use in Cayenne, here the product proved to be insufficiently effective. The product, of course, is compatible with a turbo, but with a heavy load, close to the red arrow, the waste was up to 0.8 liters per 2000 km, which is a lot. On engine parts with a mileage of 38,000 km, a black coating was observed, which indicates that the oil did not effectively cope with the task at an elevated engine heating temperature, and hence the protection of the Porsche Cayenne biturbo engine.

Having collected a little used mobile, the analysis showed an excess of chips and soot in the oil, which indicates that the additives do not do the job and exhaust their limit earlier than intended. Waste also affected the throttle response of the motor, the power dropped significantly during acceleration. When running the car on the slipway, the diagnostics showed a loss of power of 10 hp.

If you are using mobil 0w40, then it is advisable to use it with an additional anti-friction additive, and flush the engine with oil, washing away carbon deposits and sludge that are formed during the combustion process and deposited on the parts.
