    In the upgraded UMP engines for the UAZ-469, the cooling system became a dual-circuit one, the coolant circulation scheme in the engine was changed, which improved the temperature regime of its parts. Improving the economic and dynamic performance of the engine is also impossible without maintaining a stable and high temperature in it.

    If in the case of the old cooling system this was limited by the requirements of the simplicity of the system and the use of water as a coolant, which quite objectively made it necessary to make the thermostat opening temperature quite low. Then, under the new system, objectivity was trampled on by the inertia of habits, multiplied by the lack of knowledge. Many drivers deliberately changed the factory thermostat to a different one, with a lower (like the old one) opening temperature. Or even removed the thermostat from the system.

    If in the first case the car overused fuel and “pleased” the passengers with barely warm air from the stove, then in the second, overheating was a constant problem. Meanwhile, the development of engine requirements for the UAZ-469 exacerbated the real problems. Thus, the further forcing of the engine was opposed by the low filling of the cylinders with the working mixture at high speeds.

    This was a consequence of the fact that structurally the inlet and outlet pipelines were located on the same side. Accordingly, on the one hand, inlet and outlet channels were obtained in the cylinder head. And such a solution did not allow increasing the flow sections of the channels due to their close location. In addition, the gasket between the pipelines and the head turned out to be quite narrow in some places.

    In the absence of control over the tightening of the pipeline fastening nuts, these bottlenecks of the gasket were destroyed, and the composition of the mixture was disturbed due to air leakage into the intake. The solution to the problem was to separate the intake and exhaust on different sides of the head, which meant, in fact, the creation of a new engine for the UAZ-469 with the corresponding costs and time for its refinement and testing. UMP found a way out to the requirement to increase power in the form of an increase in working volume up to 2.9 liters, which the existing unit dimension allowed.

    Power, of course, has grown, but the problem with occupancy has worsened even more. In the mid-90s, a qualitative breakthrough was made in this matter, where the long-awaited head appeared on the new UMZ-249 engine for the UAZ-469 with the inlet and outlet spaced apart on different sides. This made it possible to significantly improve the fillability in the entire operating range of engine speeds, and expand the range itself. Accordingly, the power and torque indicators were significantly improved.

    But the decision to put the UMZ-249 engines into series was baffled for reasons that have no technical explanation. Even more doubtful in view of the change of ownership that took place during this time at UAZ and UMP was the prospect of using this engine as part of the Ulyanovsk off-road vehicle. As a result, the latter lost a light engine, which was the most suitable for him.

    In turn, the design of the 417 motor became the basic solution for the next versions of UMZ 420 (did not go into series) and UMZ 421.

    Design features

    In principle, the UMZ 417 engine was copied from the ZMZ 402 engine, but differences still exist:

    • landing sleeves in the block with rubber rings instead of copper gaskets;
    • the flywheel is larger in diameter;
    • no fins at the beginning of the release, then 4 stiffeners appeared;
    • removable oil filter instead of glass;
    • the scheme of the cooling system is reversed - both the supply and intake of coolant from the cylinder head;
    • weak fiber gland of the pump instead of the gland from the VAZ engine;
    • reduced diameter of the valve discs.

    And the main reason for the decrease in the power of UMZ 417 in comparison with ZMZ 402 is the combined, not bifurcated exhaust manifold.

    Design features are:

    • in-line engine layout and its longitudinal location relative to the trajectory of the vehicle;
    • small combustion chamber, dome configuration;
    • improved cleaning of the lubricant (full-flow scheme with a replaceable filter);
    • high operational resource from 150,000 km of run;

    • 4178.10-10 - after the release of the UMZ 421 version, the cylinder head from this engine is used, in which the valve diameter is increased to 39 mm, the pump is shifted to the block, instead of packing it has a normal oil seal;
    • 4179.10 - recommended for special vehicles of the Ministry of Defense, Euro-1, compression ratio 7.0, characteristics 171.6 Nm and 92 hp. with., starting heater, diaphragm or lever clutch.

    Advantages and disadvantages

    The disadvantages include attachments - a complex design of a two-chamber carburetor and a low resource of a pump impeller made of polymer material.     Motor tuning options

    Since the UMZ 417 carburetor engine has a heavy piston system, tuning is carried out according to the scheme:
