23.09.2019

From the outside, the Volkswagen Jetta looks really cool. It makes no sense to lick all its facets and curves with enthusiastic epithets - photographs will do it better and more accurately. True, my own enthusiasm for the previous Jetta was a little stronger. Probably because then there was no Polo sedan, which received the main design motifs of the style of the new Jetta first, albeit not in such a bright performance. From some angles, the new Volkswagen Jetta can be mistaken for an expensive version of the Polo sedan ...

The new Volkswagen Jetta is still a Golf sedan. But the “extension” at the rear of the Jetta is really impressive - as much as 510 liters, and if the “liter” measurement method does not tell you anything, can you imagine the luggage compartment of a decent middle-class sedan? In Jetta, it is no less! A wide opening will facilitate the loading of bulky items, and a pair of small levers will allow you to unfold both parts of the sofa while standing outside. Of the shortcomings - a flat floor when laying out the seats will not work.

True, inside the Jetta I begin to feel a cognitive dissonance: inside the sedan is not as solid (in terms of dimensions) as it seems from the outside. The headlining seems to hang lower than in the Golf, the rear-view mirror obscures the right half of the view into the windshield, and the driver's door trim is substantially closer than in most D-class sedans. But the Volkswagen Jetta is considered almost an intermediate link between the C segment (a typical representative of which is the Volkswagen Golf) and the D segment (Volkswagen Passat).

Stylistically, the interior of the new Volkswagen Jetta is done perfectly: the backlight is bright and white, the materials fit perfectly, the seats look grippy and are. The steering wheel and seats have sufficient adjustment ranges. Finishing panels traditionally for the Germans do not crunch and do not creak. By the way, the Americans will have to be content with the rigid version of the interior, and we have the upper part of the dashboard - a soft trifle - but it's nice ... It's only a pity that the door trim and we have a hard, plastic one.

Navigator for Volkswagen Jetta: useful, but expensive

You can find the desired point in an unfamiliar city or area using the Volkswagen RNS 510 multimedia navigation system, which understands not only finger pokes on the screen, but also voice commands. In addition to an excellent knowledge of Russian roads, "500-10th" perfectly knows the art of reading DVDs, a high-resolution TFT touch screen, maps of Russia and even a 30 GB hard drive. In fact, the only drawback of the RNS 510 is that it can only be ordered in the Business package - along with leather interior, Bluetooth hands free package and luggage boxes under the front seats. So the pleasure is not from the public: the cost of the package is more than 147,000 rubles ...

Motors and gearboxes

New Jettas are only available with 1.4 TSI engines with 122 or 150 hp. with 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG "robot". In our case, under the hood there was a top-end version with 150 horses and a fancy DSG robotic gearbox. Apart from the fact that the addition of such a box deducts an additional 81,000 rubles from your bank account, then this option seems ideal. This is probably the best automatic transmission that you can get in addition to a car worth 700-800 thousand rubles. And one of its main advantages is an excellent adaptation to the individual driving style.

Imagine that I do not need to rush to the editorial office, and I will spend my entire working day driving a brand new German sedan. I press on the gas solely with the weight of my shoe, which is why the tachometer needle barely crosses the 2,500 rpm mark, and the gears change smoothly and quickly from each other, keeping fuel consumption within reasonable limits. That is, no more than 9-10 liters in a similar cycle ....

But then the editor-in-chief calls and says that they need me in the office. "Listen, Jetta, I'm in a hurry, stop saving - I need to go to work!". The presence of a sport mode in the transmission tells you where you need to move the selector in order to quickly get to the “point B”. Gas to the floor, the arrow flies up, and the engine honestly spins up to 6.5 thousand revolutions, despite the fact that the “red zone” begins after 6,000. Acceleration is very peppy, and the sound at the “upper” revolutions, although loud "thoroughbred".

Don't roll yourself

Despite the technical identity with the VW Golf - MacPherson is also in the front, a multi-link in the back - the Jetta rides differently. It rolls a little more and reacts a little less sharply to the actions of the driver - it's a matter of a larger wheelbase. But this difference does not affect the overall driving experience. To summarize: Jetta is a perfectly balanced car. Rough and a little lazy. Excellent grip on the asphalt even at 180 km / h (by the way, do you often drive at such a speed on cars with 1.4?) And even on the St. it’s too early to write down the Jetta’s driving buzz, the BMW 3 series still needs to grow ...

How much to paint a Volkswagen Jetta

There is only one free color - white. For a red or black non-metallic, you will have to pay 5,200, and for a metallic or pearlescent sheen, you will be asked for 18,330 rubles.

Prices

When the 1.6-liter 105-horsepower sedan appears on the market, the cheapest Jetta will cost 685,000 rubles. In the meantime, you can buy a new Jetta with a 1.4-liter 122-horsepower TSI and a manual transmission for no less than 711,000 rubles. The automatic (7-speed DSG transmission with two clutches) adds 81,000 rubles.

Volkswagen Jetta in the Russian market is one of the three best-selling models of the German concern, occupying a middle position in terms of price and size between the bestseller, the budget Polo, and the large family Passat lost in the list.

What is the Jetta like?

Jetta is for sale with four variants of four-cylinder petrol engines. The first two are atmospheric MPI EA211 series engines with a volume of 1.6 liters, 90 and 110 hp, the other two are 125 and 150 hp.

Atmospheric Volkswagen Jetta engines are equipped with a five-speed manual transmission and a six-speed automatic. For turbocharged engines, a six-speed “mechanics” and an automatic transmission with two dry clutches 7DSG are offered.

On our test, there was, perhaps, one of the most common models - Jetta with a 1.6-liter engine, 110 hp. and automatic transmission.

Volkswagen Jetta outside

Jetta is a classic that will remain relevant for many years. The car is the epitome of rigor and elegance. The chiselled body profile, clear and precise lines, and the rigid drawing of the side surfaces give the sedan a fresh and solid look.

However, the unification of Volkswagen models leads to the fact that it is difficult for the layman to immediately figure out which particular car is in front of him. Brightness and flashiness in the Jetta is not enough - this is another Volkswagen car. But thanks to a well-designed design, the Jetta is more often written into more expensive cars than it is.

Our test car was "stuffed" with various additional packages. So, as standard, the Jetta is equipped with halogen headlights. They have an elongated shape, expanding towards the outer edges, and are in perfect harmony with the radiator grille, forming a single whole with it.

Bi-xenon headlights, which were installed on our Jetta, come as an additional option along with LED daytime running lights, which are equipped with a system of adaptive and static cornering lights. The latter is activated when the direction indicator is turned on or when the steering wheel is turned, providing more efficient illumination of the road. Such headlights illuminate the road well and are very convenient in dark courtyards, but the border between light and shadow is harsh, which is not very comfortable for the eyes on a long journey. But the LED running lights make the Jetta stand out on the road and make it look much more expensive - no one will be rude once again. Since 2017, such daytime running gears have been included in the basic equipment for medium and top trim levels.

The almost perfect side contour is one of the reasons why the Jetta is written into expensive sedans. The light classic silhouette makes the appearance of the car harmonious and elegant.

The specific design of the taillight pattern, which often distinguishes Volkswagen cars, is greatly leveled in the Jetta. The result is an elegant, recognizable lighting accent without excessive design pretensions. And this once again suggests that the appearance of the car will not become outdated for a long time.

Volkswagen Jetta inside

The main advantage of the Jetta inside is a spacious and tidy interior. And although it is very difficult to make claims to the interior, it is so unified with the style of the Volkswagen concern that it is already difficult to call it recognizable.

The Jetta's interior is beautiful, the materials are pleasant and of high quality, the assembly is neat, the space is organized very conveniently. The steering wheel lies pleasantly in the hands, the driver's landing is easily adjusted thanks to the seat and steering wheel adjustments. The strict classic dashboard with on-board computer display is informative and well readable.

Thanks to convenient glove compartments and glove boxes, small things in the cabin do not interfere.

Convenient niches are provided for mobile devices, where phones do not interfere and are always at hand.

The location of the controls is good, the knobs are comfortable, all the graphics are clear and easy to read. Metallic accents on lacquered black inserts look very solid and elegant.

Driver assistants in Volkswagen Jetta

Our test Jetta was equipped with a full driver assistance package. First of all, this is a rear view camera Rear View. It facilitates the parking process by displaying the area behind the car on the display of the multimedia system. Dynamic guides help determine the trajectory of the arrival of the parking space. The camera comes with a parking assistant.

The Blind Spot sensor also comes with a parking exit assistant that, when reversing, warns the driver of approaching vehicles and, if necessary, even activates emergency braking. It all works very unobtrusively and conveniently. However, despite all the comfort that these systems provide, it is still better not to forget about the necessary caution in such maneuvers - cameras and sensors can get dirty and frosted over, so "hope in God, but don't make a mistake yourself."

Blind Spot Detection monitors the space to the right and left of the vehicle. The signal about the presence in the "dead zone" of the car is displayed on the side mirrors. Here, the light signal is done conveniently - bright enough to attract attention and soft enough not to interfere with looking in the mirror, especially in dirty mirrors at night.

In addition, our Jetta had a system for automatically switching high and low beams and a driver fatigue recognition system. The first did not cause any complaints (although I still prefer to switch the light on my own), but the second never worked.

Volkswagen Jetta and passengers

With the front passenger in the Jetta, everything is fine - almost the same comfort is available to him as to the driver. There are various seat adjustments, and heated seats. The rear passengers only have a comfortable sofa with plenty of legroom and an armrest.

Rear seating is comfortable, but only for two adults. They will have enough legroom, and even tall passengers on a long journey will feel comfortable here. But the third passenger will not only sit Spartan himself, but also interfere with others with his feet because of the protruding central tunnel. Despite the practical relief of the chair, only children can comfortably place their legs here and at the same time experience the pleasure of driving.

Even though the rear passengers have heated legs and their own air ducts on top, when the temperature dropped to -30 degrees, they began to dream of heated seats. Although the car heats up very quickly - after 20 minutes of warming up at this temperature, it was already warm in the Jetta's cabin, heated rear seats would not hurt here.

The rear sofa has an armrest with cup holders, a hatch for long items and can be folded asymmetrically. All this greatly increases the practicality of the Jetta in everyday use.

A huge trunk with a volume of 510 liters allows you to carry a lot of various cargo in the Jetta. One could wish here only a greater height of the opening.

But everything else is here - and a third 12-volt outlet (the second for the rear passengers), and holders for things on the side, and hooks for fixing luggage by the handles. Soft lining allows you not to worry about the cargo or the safety of the cabin. On the Jetta, you can safely go to the same IKEA - two-meter cornices, children's desks and kitchen cabinets fit here easily. Of course, if they are assembled into branded compact parallelepipeds. This is where the height of the loading opening comes into play, but a lot can be stored through the side doors as well. The only thing to worry about is that the bars do not damage luggage - for crossover owners this can be a revelation. Folding the seatbacks exclusively from the trunk will be another discovery for them - attempts to find the levers from the side doors will not bring success.

Under the trunk floor in the Jetta is a tool and a full-size spare tire. This, perhaps, favorably distinguishes the car among many expensive Volkswagens, since dragging several tens of kilometers along a broken road to the nearest tire shop is not the most pleasant thing.

Germans and frost. Or a Volkswagen Jetta on the road.

Our test Jetta got all the winter adventures that a car can have in central Russia. The overture was a snowfall with rain, mercifully ending in ordinary snow. Then the percussion and timpani entered: the bitter frosts tightly grabbed all the lyrical digressions on the roads, turning them into a vile skating rink.

Since in the first three days the test car turned into Moidodyr's dirty dream, I decided to wash it. Still, a beautiful girl, which the Jetta undoubtedly is, is not worth driving dirty. It was only minus 15. At night the temperature dropped to minus 36. By morning it got warmer - up to minus 33. With trepidation, I approached the car - it was scary to press the key button. But you won't believe it! Not a single door, not a single hatch, not a single lid froze. Everything opened easily.

The second important button in such a frost is automatic engine start. By the time the engine was started, I was fully equipped - the keys to remove the battery and the charger for it were ready. But even here happiness awaited me - the car started up easily. The fact that the engine had died out was only told by a slightly longer starter operating time. After a couple of minutes it became possible to sit on the seats, and after ten it was quite possible to go. That's just the steering wheel burned with cold for a long time - the heating of the steering wheel is clearly not enough here. But after a couple of hours of the trip, the real Tashkent came to the cabin - at least undress.

Gets under way Jetta smoothly and confidently. The hand reaches out and turns on melodic and calm jazz. Smooth dynamics hides the sharpness of the steering wheel. It is clear, but not too sharp, as in more powerful versions: there are only 110 “horses” in the engine, so the car cannot show any special racing results. However, despite the calm nature, overtaking is given freely - the speed is picked up predictably and it is easy to calculate the exit into the oncoming lane. The car stands confidently on the road, enters turns well, moderately reacts to rutting. Suspension energy-intensive, not too shaky. In general, driving in a calm mode is a pleasure.

The difference between the sport mode and the usual one is hardly noticeable, but in the "sport" loaded Jetta picks up speed better. Therefore, on the way from the furniture store on overtaking, I preferred to turn on the sport mode. However, a couple of times I had to put more pressure on the gas, and then I got scared: a wild roar came from under the hood. Even my passengers fell silent in surprise and looked at me with surprise. Despite the roar, the nature of the acceleration has not changed much - it was possible not to be zealous with the gas pedal, it only scares others.

I must say that the sound of the engine is not the only one that is heard in the cabin. There is soundproofing in the Jetta, but the field for work remains large. We were lucky in terms of the volume of rubber - it was without spikes and there was no howling in the cabin. But on a slippery road, I often got acquainted with working with ABS - it would be better if there were spikes. The howl can be drowned out with slightly louder music.

Consumed our Jetta 92nd gasoline. While the winter was dirty and wet, fuel consumption did not exceed 7.5 liters per hundred kilometers with all New Year's Eve traffic jams. As the winter turned white and sunny and the thermometers began to shrink, fuel consumption crept up. First, per liter, and after a few days of thirty-degree frosts, it reached 10.5 liters per 100 km. So long warm-ups affected consumption. When the frost receded, everything returned to within 7.5 - 8 liters per hundred.

How is the Russian Jetta different?

The Russian variation of the Volkswagen Jetta has a galvanized body, reinforced suspension and a number of body elements. Compared to the European version, the “Russian” has reinforced shock absorbers, anti-roll bars, other suspension and body parts, which are designed to ensure its reliable operation in poor road conditions.

For comfortable operation in hot and cold, the Russian Jetta has an increased power generator for heating and lighting in winter. The engine cooling system is adapted for both cold winters and hot summers. Starting with the Trendline package, the standard already includes heated front seats and mirrors, headlight washer, heated windshield washer jets, and an increased-capacity washer reservoir.

By the way, the Volkswagen Jetta trim levels have recently been updated, and heated front seats come with the basic Conceptline. Also, the model has become richer equipped with airbags - in the Conceptline and Trendline versions, side airbags for front passengers, as well as head protection curtains for front and rear passengers, appeared. A full-size spare steel wheel now comes with all versions, plus a removable plastic cap to protect the radiator in winter.

About the localization of the Volkswagen Jetta

1.6 liter engines are of Russian origin. They are produced at the concern's engine plant in Kaluga and are already installed on five models: the Volkswagen Polo and SKODA Rapid, which are assembled at the Volkswagen plant in Kaluga, and on the Volkswagen Jetta, SKODA Octavia and SKODA Yeti models, which are manufactured in Nizhny Novgorod. By the way, the Kaluga Engine Plant started production in 2015 and already last year reached the level of 50,000 engines produced.

The blanks of the cylinder block and cylinder head come to Kaluga from the Ulyanovsk plant of the Nemak company, which produces engine parts from Russian aluminum. The electrical wiring for the engine is supplied by Fujikura Automotive from its production site in Cheboksary.

Summary

A 110-horsepower Jetta with a 1.6-liter engine is "Radio Jazz" or "Classic". Calm, elegant, pleasant. But racing is for more powerful engines that can turn the same Jetta into a very incendiary car.

Is this regularity suitable for the Jetta? Undoubtedly yes. Especially when it's cold, dark and dirty outside, and three baby faces flaunt in the back. Here it becomes much more valuable that the car is warm, spacious and safe. Child seats are easy to install, in the trunk there is room for sleds, skis, ice floes and adult things. Of course, I would like to have a higher ground clearance, but if you live in a city where tractors and wipers are not a novelty, but you drive on the roads, then 160 centimeters is enough to just drive. Just turn on some nice music and enjoy.

Apparently, the developers of the updated Volkswagen Jetta strictly followed this commandment. The car in the new edition is almost no different from the previous version, only the headlights and bumpers have been changed, a new steering wheel has appeared in the cabin, the same as the Volkswagen Golf. In terms of mechanics, there are more changes; 1.6-liter atmospheric gasoline engines have been replaced by new generation engines with the same volume, but more powerful, with a return of 90 and 110 hp. But on our test, we have a Volkswagen Jetta in a rich configuration with a 1.4-liter TSI turbo engine with a capacity of 125 hp. and a 7-speed DSG robotic gearbox.

To date, such a car in the top-end Highline configuration costs 1,279,000 rubles. But the options increased the cost to almost 1,400,000 rubles. Having paid only 40,000 rubles, you can take the Jetta in the same configuration, but with a 150-horsepower engine.

Maybe the stylists are right that they did not radically change the appearance of a successful car. The classic design of the sixth generation Volkswagen Jetta will most likely never get old, except that it can get boring over time. The interior of the car is one of the most spacious among classmates, the ergonomics are reference. On the other hand, the C+ class car market is gradually shrinking, and deep modernization does not always give a positive result. For example, after the update, the Hyundai Elantra began to sell almost twice as well, while the demand for the new Toyota Corolla, on the contrary, fell. The popularity of the Volkswagen Jetta is also slowly declining, but, nevertheless, it is still one of the most popular cars in its class.

The C+ sedan segment is now going through difficult times, on the one hand, many buyers are switching to crossovers, on the other hand, many B+ class cars have grown noticeably in recent years, they have improved equipment, and they began to compete directly with higher-class sedans. In fact, C+ class models still have a fairly narrow market niche in the price range from 1 to 1.5 million rubles. And closer to the upper limit, these are already cars with powerful engines that provide good dynamics, and with rich equipment at the level of D-class cars. But does it make sense to take even a well-equipped, but more compact car, if you can buy a car of a higher class for the same money? Let's try to find out on the example of the Volkswagen Jetta.

Many make a decision in favor of choosing a Volkswagen Jetta even in the showroom, barely having time to drive. You will not find such a comfortable seat with a good profile and effective lateral support not only in the C-segment, but also, perhaps, in the D-class, except perhaps in the Volkswagen Passat, but it is already much more expensive. Ergonomics verified to the smallest detail. The cover of the central armrest box is not only retractable, but also adjustable in height. A sports-style steering wheel with a thick rim, slightly cut at the bottom, fits well in the hands. Classical instruments are an example of informativeness. The test car is equipped with an optional multimedia system with Discover Media navigation, it is available for all Volkswagen Jettas, starting from medium trim levels.

This is already a Volkswagen tradition, even a car with a modest engine can be taken in a rich configuration and at the same time not overpay for unnecessary options. After a little digging in the configurator, you can assemble the car as a constructor, picking up the right “cubes”. The multimedia system is good for everyone, the screen is large and bright, the graphics and performance are excellent, it can be integrated with smartphones on the Android or iPhone platform. The salon is strict in German, somewhat gloomy, but you can’t fault the quality of the finishing materials. Visibility is not bad, there are parking sensors and a rear-view camera, side mirrors are somewhat small, but in heavy traffic, the blind spot monitoring system comes to the rescue.

Passengers Volkswagen Jetta is also a sin to complain about comfort. The right front seat is adjustable in height, it is convenient and few of my classmates have this. There is also a lot of space in the back, but only for two passengers, since there is a massive central tunnel on the floor. But the two are comfortable, the chairs are well profiled, the central armrest is located at the optimal height.

The luggage compartment of the Volkswagen Jetta is not only the most spacious among classmates, but also quite comfortable. It has a large opening, smooth walls, a neat finish, and a hatch for skis. If you fold the backs of the rear seats, a large area is formed, but not quite flat, there is a small step. You can also find fault with the fact that the loops are not covered and there are no devices for securing luggage.

The test car is equipped with a 1.4-liter TSI turbo engine with 125 hp. and a 7-speed DSG robotic gearbox. At first, there were complaints about the reliability of this power unit, but after the modernization, the problems disappeared. The motor is no longer as picky about the quality of fuel as before, in any conditions it normally works on AI-95 gasoline. The clutches of the robotic gearbox have become quite reliable, but as before, the transmission seeks to shift to higher gears as quickly as possible, which is not very convenient in the city. But the real fuel consumption, even in urban conditions, does not exceed 9 liters per 100 km, about 7 liters on the highway. Most classmates spend about 2 liters more for every 100 km.

The 1.4-liter engine has practically no turbo-lag effect, it pulls well already at the bottom, and the maximum torque of 200 Nm is available in the range from 1400 to 4000 rpm. The dynamics are very good, so it makes little sense to pay extra 40,000 rubles for a 150-horsepower engine. Moreover, as the experience of numerous owners has shown, a 125-horsepower engine can be boosted to the same 150 “horses” only through chip tuning with virtually no reduction in resource, however, the guarantee will no longer be valid.

The handling of the Volkswagen Jetta is excellent thanks to the multi-link rear suspension and precise steering settings. The suspension is tight, perhaps stiff, but the low-profile 225/45 R17 tires on the test car are to blame. The manufacturer allows the installation of tires on the Volkswagen Jetta with dimensions from 15 to 18 inches. Practice shows that the best choice for this car, providing an optimal balance between comfort, handling and braking dynamics, is 16-inch tires.

For our operating conditions, the car is well adapted. The ground clearance is large enough. In expensive trim levels, there are heated windshield washer nozzles and windshield. Bi-xenon headlights with dynamic cornering light perfectly illuminate the road, both low beam and high beam are good.

We present to your attention a video review of the Volkswagen Jetta. This is a restyled version of 2015. WV is assembled in Nizhny Novgorod.

Appearance

There are no cardinal changes here. The front and rear bumpers have changed, the angle of entry has visually increased, it has become a little more massive in width. There are new fog lights. The rear lights have changed (they have become like on the Audi A-3), the rear trunk lid has slightly increased in width.

The presence of a double exhaust pipe indicates a powerful engine. One of the longest cars in the class, looks solid. Studded tires.

Specifications

MacPherson front suspension, independent rear suspension. This is a plus, few can boast of such. 1.6 liter engines with different firmware for 85 and 105 hp. With. The first is not much inferior in dynamics, 5 Newton meters difference.

Torque converter six-speed automatic. But paired with a 1.6-liter power unit, it is a little "blunt". There is also a 1.4 L TCI engine with seven-speed DSG. These are different cars in terms of dynamics. Until 2015, there were problems with the DSG.

Salon

The main difference is the new “wells” on the dashboard, a redesigned DSG selector, new inserts on the dashboard. Steering wheel from Golf with chopped lower part. In the basic version, it is cheaper and without buttons. Even in the maximum configuration, there is no electric adjustment of the steering wheel or seats.

Enough space, above the head too. Plastic is cheap. Door lock, mirror adjustment, four power windows. There is also a radio tape recorder, flow distribution, parking sensors off, climate control and light control units (there is an auto mode).

Differential lock, downhill system. On the front panel - "glove box" with a built-in airbag. Adjustable armrest, cup holders. It is very comfortable to sit in the back seat, individual airflow (but this is an option), a 12-volt socket. In the maximum version - a combined leather-fabric interior. Music system with eight speakers.

The trunk opens either with a key or from the passenger compartment. Its volume is 510 liters. Under its floor is a full-size spare tire. The rear seat folds down, there is a hatch for transporting long items. Very thoughtful luggage compartment with different shelves. The trunk is closed with a special handle.

Driving performance

Minimum information on the display.

The steering wheel needs to be a little thicker.

On the instrument panel - average speed, speedometer, oil temperature - and that's it. Moves smoothly. The box works adequately up to about 150 hp. With.

Test drive Volkswagen Jetta 2015 showed that this model has a tight insensitive gas pedal. Poor sound insulation, you can hear how the suspension works when overcoming bumps.

Fuel consumption is 49 liters per 100 kilometers, on the highway it will be about 36.

Very well shaped side mirrors. They do not take up much space, but you can see everything from behind. Large rearview mirror.

In normal mode, there are no jerks. But in traffic jams until 2015, the car was very confusing first and second gears. Now it just keeps first gear longer. The brakes are good. The robot is very fast.

The motor pulls badly, but saves the DSG. Consumption up to 100 km - 9.8 seconds. There are no ergonomic noises typical for the C-class. There is also a Sport mode. I would like a little faster wipers. Suspension is good, well fulfills bumps.

Price

In the basic configuration - 745 thousand rubles. This is a 1.6 liter engine, mechanics with 85 hp. With. The complete set on the machine will cost 880 thousand (it will be a 1.6 liter engine with 106 hp). Starting configurations of competitors cost 900 thousand.

Toyota costs about 890 thousand, about the same level as Cruise, Focus and Astra. Volkswagen dominates the class. The maximum equipment costs 1.2 million rubles. It is equipped with blind spot control and leather interior.

2015 Volkswagen Jetta Review

In truth, this test drive did not start with a car, but with a road trip plan from Moscow to Georgia. A specific car appeared in this regard later. SUV, crossover? No - let's take a chance, we'll go on a regular urban Volkswagen Jetta monoprivod sedan. Let's see if it will survive on permanently repaired roads in a number of regions from the Moscow region to Vladikavkaz, but the main thing is whether it will fail on the winding Georgian Military Highway.

"Jetta" in this body (VI generation) has been sold in Russia for five years. A year ago, the sedan was updated: they upgraded the front and rear optics, added some little things to the exterior and interior. To many, this model still seems boring and unpretentious, like Bavarian sausages. In fact, now it looks strictly, simply, but at the same time expensive. If this is not enough for someone and the car seems boring, then you can decorate it with St. George ribbons and a “To Berlin” sticker.

The updated Jetta differs from the restyled version not only in appearance. For example, the trunk opening has become wider. Its volume (510 l) did not grow from this, but it became more convenient to load large items. In addition, the sedan was stuffed with a set of “bad roads” package, advanced ESP, an assisting system when leaving the parking lot, blind spot sensors, a driver fatigue recognition system, bi-xenon adaptive headlights and a bunch of other options. All this is most welcome: I was hoping for business class auto travel.

The sedan is built on the no longer a new platform from the Golf VI. At the same time, the Golf sedan is now lagging behind, since the current seventh generation of the hatchback is already based on the MQB modular trolley.

Daniil Lomakin/Gazeta.Ru

In the cabin with restyling, nothing much has changed. And what is there to change? Like all representatives of the German brand, including even the cheap Polo, the interior of the Jetta is assembled with exemplary quality for the mass market.

But shaking on broken roads, for example, in the Kuban, could finish him off too - I returned to Moscow already to the accompaniment of the sounds that some covers and panels made of hard plastic make. But still, the interior of the sedan is good: spacious, comfortable and concise.

Someone may be embarrassed by a low landing, but this is already a matter of anatomy - I just like it. I would like to get except that the electric adjustment of the driver's seat, at least in the maximum configuration. Moreover, before updating the model, this option existed. But what was really missing was a USB output for charging gadgets. It is strange that the most expensive multimedia system with a touch screen, which was on the test car, does not have USB, but the budget head unit - please.

The steering wheel is the same as on the “seventh” Golf: it lies well in the hand and has a wide range of adjustment in reach and height.

For the first time, a driver fatigue recognition system has become available for the Jetta, albeit as an additional option. This "additional" is inexpensive - about 4 thousand, but practice shows that there is little sense from it. Only once, during four forced marches of about a thousand kilometers, each on-board computer determined that I was tired and offered to take a breath. Strange, given that I definitely lost my sharpness of reaction during each of these many hours of races.

Appeared in the top-end Jetta trim levels and more necessary options, namely new-generation bi-xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lighting. In addition, fog lights also illuminate the edge of the roadway in corners, but their light is static.

By and large, in the city, such optics are wasted money, but on a dark mountain road in Georgia, where cliffs and stone ledges are hidden in pitch darkness, and behind a sharp turn you periodically stumble upon an old woman or a cow crossing the roadway, adaptive light in direct meaning it saves lives.

Who would have thought that a front-wheel drive ordinary C-class sedan does not save on serpentine and in terms of control. I knew that all models steer well, but I did not expect that a car that weighs almost one and a half tons would be so obedient that even a child could easily fill it in sharp turns.

The class of the car is revealed only by passing s-shaped ligaments at a speed - the sedan sways and rolls slightly, but does not leave the trajectory, does not try to take you to the bottom of the gorge.

An elastic suspension and a tight and, one might even say, sharp steering wheel are enough to not only feel confident on the road, but also enjoy driving, climbing the winding “two-lane” uphill, squealing tires.

For the Russian market, the sedan was upgraded: reinforced shock absorbers, stabilizers and some body parts were installed.

Obviously, with such a dynamic ascent to the top of the pass, the ESP system, which has an electronic differential lock, also plays its role. In turns, the electronics play with torque, redistributing it between the drive wheels, making the car more stable in turns. Another good thing about this ESP is the ability to increase the reaction force on the steering wheel when the driver panics and tries to turn the ram more than it can be done so as not to lose control.

As for driving on the highway, the German sedan goes like a Sapsan on rails: neither the rut nor the side wind affect the behavior of the car in any way.

I have heard colleagues complain about the poor sound insulation in the Jetta, but I cannot fully share their point of view. At least at a speed of 130 km / h, it was not necessary to raise your voice when talking with a passenger. And this is taking into account the fact that the car was shod in more noisy winter tires.

In addition, having swept along the serpentine with a breeze, one cannot help but praise the robot with two clutches - DSG, which, when switched to "sport", turns a family sedan with front-wheel drive and a small turbo engine not into a sports car, of course, but into a car that can drive on - dashingly. The box shifts gears without breaking the power flow, so the motor works with full efficiency. Even driving the tachometer needle into the red zone, it is unrealistic to provoke the transmission to jerk when changing speed. Only those who fail during the warranty period can scold this box, and the dealer refuses to repair it for free. This, as the owners say, happens.

However, the 1.4-liter 122-horsepower turbo engine deserves good words. Although it is far from new, it is quite economical and peppy. Consumption on the highway with uniform movement at a speed of 120-130 km / h - a little more than 7 liters per 100 km, and in the city - about 9 liters with dynamic driving. Acceleration to 100 km / h takes 10 seconds (9.8 according to the passport).

Peak torque - 200 Nm - is available almost from idle and up to 4000 rpm. Therefore, acceleration on the rise is very easy, even if you start off uphill from a standstill.

This engine has a weak point - a turbine, which, judging by the reviews of the owners, does not live up to 100 thousand kilometers. In addition, experts say that the engine does not digest low-quality oil well.

From the well-known engine and gearbox, we will return again to technologies new to the Jetta. Blind Spot Detection and Rear Traffic Alert work well and even effectively, especially in cities with crazy traffic. For example, such as Tbilisi. Honestly, only the presence of electronic assistants saved me, and even more than once, from banal accidents.

Rear-view mirrors are small and do not “show” everything, so it’s better not to skimp and purchase blind spot sensors as an option

The review was generally positive. Of course, in some ways this sedan can be inferior to competitors. Yes, in the same aspect of the reliability of the motor and gearbox, for example. For some motorists, this factor will be decisive when choosing a new car, but for others, including myself, it is not so important if a trip of several thousand kilometers brings pleasure, not fatigue. The desire to go on a trip again immediately after an already completed long voyage arises in relation to not every car.

As for prices, they bite. In the maximum configuration (Highline), which includes alloy wheels, "sports" seats, bi-xenon light and parking sensors, Jetta today costs from 1.07 million rubles. For this amount, you can count on a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine and "mechanics". With the most powerful 150-horsepower 1.4-liter turbo engine and DSG, the sedan will cost 1.23 million rubles.

The already expensive Jetta can add another couple of hundred thousand in price if it is equipped with atmospheric interior lighting (it looks great, but it costs almost ten thousand rubles), navigation, a rear-view camera, a blind spot monitoring system and other useful and not very options. . However, in the current times of crisis, even the prices for German sausages “bite”, and it will be difficult to find something similar for less money.
