Walking along the rows of the Green Corner, ironed three times the day before, my partner suddenly drew my attention to one of the Estima, which was clearly not yet ready for sale. After a superficial inspection of the car, two serious “jambs” were found: obviously weak front pillars and slight damage to the front door panels in the cabin. After a short auction, the price dropped to 6,500 conventional units. Having quickly finished with the design, we purchased two sets of winter tires on disks. I - for my car, which has now become, and my partner - for the Nissan Vanette truck, both sets are winter. The bus was “shod” in excellent summer tires (looking ahead, I’ll say that it was enough for two summers).

They stopped all the drivers - a full inspection and too many questions. At nine o'clock in the morning, having passed Khabarovsk, I gave the steering wheel to my replacement.

Good asphalt disposed to fast movement. Speed ​​- 120-140 km / h and portable signs "30" and "40", one of which caught us. For four times the speed limit, they paid with two bills of 100 rubles to a completely bald ensign of about fifty in glasses, apparently correcting the family budget on a warm Saturday day. After Birobidzhan, the asphalt road ended, and the famous gravel dusters began. When inspecting the car, I found that the right pillar died, having lost all the liquid, the left one leaked, but still held on. Because of this, the car began to rock more and more in the longitudinal direction. The speed, of course, had to be reduced, and we clearly lagged behind the ferrymen. It was still possible to drive along the gravel road, but deep holes caused a lot of trouble. The front suspension fell through to the bumpers, and when they burst, empty shock absorbers began to knock right on the supports. Thus began the most difficult segment of our journey - the section of the Chita-Khabarovsk highway under construction. And it was, let me remind you, in 2003, then there were just no speed sections on that road, but after blasting and the passage of powerful bulldozers under the wheels of my car, a lot of rocks passed.

The further way to Chita became a real adventure. Two days and more than a thousand kilometers of construction, the wild nature of Transbaikalia, hundreds of bridges under construction, fords through streams and rivers. There were no problems with gasoline throughout the route, but the roadside service was almost completely absent. Tire shops here can be counted on the fingers of one hand, and the problem of punctured wheels, given the quality of the road, is very relevant. The weather along the entire route was dry and hot, very conducive to swimming in the cold water of the taiga rivers that we crossed. Only in the Chita region, somewhere in the Shilka region, it began to rain, and there we had the first and only tire puncture. At first I thought to solve the problem simply: put an alloy wheel with a winter tire and drive on, but to my horror, when trying on the disk, I found a slight discrepancy between the sizes of the disk holes and the hub studs. When this problem was solved with a file, it turned out that a cast wheel cannot be fixed with a standard wheel wrench. In this situation, it is pleasant to remember the numerous drivers, no matter what they say about them, hucksters, they say, grabbers and dirty tricks, however, almost every passing column stopped at a car standing on a jack with a question if help was needed, although we, in general, didn't "vote". No one had a canister for casting, they had to put a “banana” dokatka, on which they “limped” 50 kilometers to Shilka, where there was a tire shop. Of course, tubeless wheels were not repaired there, and, having hardly found a suitable tube in the town’s only car store, it seems, we returned to the workshop, where we were repaired.

About 200 kilometers before Chita, asphalt appeared again and the first signs of civilization - oncoming traffic, snack bars and more or less civilized gas stations. Chita was bypassed on the morning of the fourth day of the journey. At ten o'clock in the evening we drove through Ulan-Ude, and this is, one might say, at home.

The losses from the haul were two shock absorbers along with supports, sentenced by me back in Vladivostok, a punctured wheel (then another thirty thousand kilometers passed) and six thousand rubles for gasoline and lunches in rare roadside cafes. KYB shock absorbers together with supports were installed even before the car was registered with the traffic police - in the first week after arrival.

Of course, I immediately wanted to test the car on a long journey and, having taken the children from the summer camp, taking my wife as well, we went to my parents in Omsk. The transformation of the cabin allowed two adults and two children to freely accommodate for the night in the car. We were completely independent from hotels and campsites, staying for the night where we wanted. Air conditioning helped a lot in the heat, especially in city traffic jams, which are inevitable when driving through Novosibirsk. And then there were nature trips to the Tunkinskaya Valley, tours to Ulan-Ude and Babushkin. In general, almost twenty thousand kilometers were added to the car's mileage during the first summer. Fuel consumption on the highway was 10-11 liters per 100 km with measured driving at a speed of 120-140 km/h. A further increase in speed inevitably dragged down the arrow of the fuel gauge in the tank. In the city, the consumption reached 14-15 liters, which I consider normal for an almost two-ton car.

Engine

2 TZ-FE is perfectly balanced and silent in operation with 4 cylinders and 2.5 liters of displacement, it produces only 135 hp, but they are enough to accelerate the car to 170 km / h (it accelerated, and not downhill! ). The thrust of the engine is tractor, it carries a heavy car in almost the same way, regardless of the load on the passenger compartment. Timing drive - chain. Oil consumption between replacements (after 10,000 km) is visually absent on the dipstick. The oil was used by Petrol-Canada 5W30, semi-synthetic, on the advice of Kuzmikha-service specialists. Filters - only the original, bought in the store of the same "Kuzmikha". Starting at any time of the year without problems, although it didn’t “freeze” the car much, there is still a garage. After about forty thousand local run, after disconnecting the battery, the engine speed began to float during warm-up, and after about a thousand kilometers, a drop in idle speed to 200-300 rpm was observed. The engine convulsed, but stubbornly did not stall. I decided that the air flow sensor had died, I was about to go for diagnostics, but after a while everything returned to normal. Subjectively, by the 60th thousand local mileage, fuel consumption per 100 km increased by about a liter, perhaps this is also due to the fact that recently I have been using only 92nd gasoline. The only reason for opening the floors and studying the appearance of the engine was an oil leak through the valve cover. He removed the latter, lubricated the contacting surfaces with sealant, thus eliminating the leak. I did not unscrew the engine plugs and did not look even once, although it would not hurt.

Transmission

The gearbox is a four-speed, simple and reliable gearbox used on the Mark II, Crown and Cresta, some SUVs and minibuses. Oil for automatic transmissions of the Castrol brand was replaced with flushing during a trip to Omsk, it took 16 (!) Liters. There were no remarks and abnormal operation of the gearbox during operation, although he allowed himself long-term slippage on snow-covered country roads, towed cars, including UAZ. But the cardan shaft had to be repaired twice. The crosspieces began to tinkle almost immediately after the haul from Vladivostok, and in the fall, after active off-road driving with numerous slippages, a dangerous backlash appeared, and the rear crosspieces had to be changed. The replacement was carried out independently, with an experienced, but not entirely sober partner, which, of course, affected the quality of the connection, it was enough for about 10,000 km. The second replacement of the cross was more successful, since it was carried out by the hands of qualified locksmiths, with a geometry check. Until now (and the car has passed more than 20 thousand after that), the cardan shaft is in order. No more work on the box and transmission mechanism was carried out.

Suspension, running gear, the most problematic in the car, at first did not cause any complaints. After replacing the supports, as well as the front and rear shock absorbers, the car became harsh on the move, but manageable and quite predictable even when passing the "foot". In addition, all knocks in the suspension disappeared. After several trips with seven adult men in the cabin, I realized that I needed to do something with the rear springs. Driving with the loading of all the seats took place practically on the “chippers”, even when traveling with five people, the rear springs obviously could not cope, and deep pits with a strong knock on the bumpers were given all over the cabin and the bodies of passengers.

The solution to the problem came unexpectedly. Once, returning from a long trip, I stopped to rest at the fork in the road, where the Angara bypass connects with the federal highway. Drivers were stationed at a local diner, one of them asked about my Estima. From the conversation it turned out that he himself is from Krasnoyarsk, where he has the same Estima. He shared his problems and operating experience: the front suspension was tortured, it rattles, he can’t do anything, everything has changed, except for the shock absorbers. I sincerely advised him to replace the shock absorbers, put KYB, like mine (there really were no comments on them, and there are still none). I, in turn, lamented my misfortune. I say, I can’t do anything with the rear suspension, it breaks through it. The solution he suggested was simply amazing: “Yes,” he says, “buy a pair of front springs from the Niva, they fit one to one, and the characteristics are completely different, just right for our roads and heavy asses of passengers.”

Wasting no time, I drove on the way home to Avtograd, bought a pair of the above springs for 600 rubles, and made a replacement that same evening. The result was great. The car became stiffer, and now, with a full load of seats, I did not slow down at each hole, so as not to damage the tailbones of the unfortunate rear seat passengers.

After about twenty thousand, something in the front suspension rattled softly. I removed the stabilizers (the so-called links), the knock did not disappear, then I replaced the tie rods, although the relatives, in general, were in good condition. Then came the turn of the shock absorber mounts. It wasn't until they were replaced that the noise stopped. It turns out that the bearings of these same supports were the source of the nasty sound, and since the support cups of this car are not under the hood, as in most passenger cars, but in the cabin, then, accordingly, this sound was much louder. At the same time, I replaced the rubber bands of the anti-roll bar. The suspension became more elastic, the knocks stopped.

The ground clearance made it possible to drive by car to all places of rest familiar to our family. Once I had to get on a country road on Ipsum of one very good person. Out of the kindness of his heart, he entrusted us with his car for an urgent trip in an emergency. Then I really appreciated the qualities of Ipsum and realized the advantages of my Estima. Its protruding parts from below did not miss a single bump, not a single road stone that accidentally turned out to be inside the rut. We drove, in general, literally on the belly. On that day, I damaged the gas line of this most popular minivan in Irkutsk, tore off the front engine protection and the fuel level sensor. Here is an example of a car completely unsuitable for our road conditions, and it's great that I did not become the owner of such a car. It is clear that any car can be foolishly mutilated, but that road was not the most killed, and the car was loaded with only two people.

The fuse for the mirror and clock adjustment system burned out after the son filled this button with juice. After a year of operation, the heated rear window stopped working. I haven’t searched for the reason yet, and glass, in general, doesn’t sweat in summer, and in winter, when the back door, along with glass, is constantly covered with a thick layer of ice and snow, I use side mirrors. In winter, the starter sometimes failed, responding to turning the key in the ignition with ringing clicks, starting the engine on the fourth or fifth attempt, with the onset of heat, the malfunction does not appear, but it would be necessary to remove it for revision. All other equipment works flawlessly.

Body. Ergonomics

One of the most spacious in this class. Allows you to easily travel with a family of four, and at short distances is used for outdoor activities. Three bicycles (in a disassembled state), a camping table, a tent, a barbecue grill, a gas stove, sleeping bags for everyone, a lot of other useful and not very things, and five more people, including the driver - how much does Estima fit in the voluminous cabin! Try it, get four of us into some Ipsum, along with three "greats"! And a memorable autumn night in the Samarta region on the high-mountain lake Ilchir, when the rain wet literally everything and everyone, threatening to spoil the impressions of the trip. Then the children in the passenger compartment, having removed the rear seats, sitting on the floor, entertained themselves by playing the throw-in "fool", without interfering with the two adults dozing in front. In addition to outdoor recreation, the car was often used for more prosaic purposes: transporting bulky items, furniture and building materials. Its roomy interior turned out to be adapted for transporting materials from Irkutsk to repair an apartment. The flooring more than 3 meters long lay neatly between the front glass and the back door, however, the drywall had to be cut in the store to put it along the length of the salon, but any profile and doors entered without any trimmings. Also, two wardrobes, transported from Shelekhov at one time, all in the same cabin. There was also a kitchen set, which at the same time left room for passengers. The number of transported TVs, washing machines and electric stoves of my acquaintances has long exceeded a dozen. In general, the practicality in the size of the body and the options for transforming the interior of the car is not to be occupied.

If we talk about design, then, undoubtedly, Estima is also one of the most beautiful in the class. The body of the egg-shaped streamlined shape, in my opinion, is still not outdated. Modern, model 1999-2000, now fashionable technological freaks like Toyota Opa or Nissan Cube are resting. They seem to have been created by a computer to which my mother did not read fairy tales before going to bed as a child.

The ease of entry and exit is beyond praise. The growth of the driver is without restrictions, it is more difficult for the passengers of the cabin, after all, the floor is a little high, this is one of the biggest drawbacks of the mid-engined layout of the car. Entry and exit to the same Honda SW or Toyota Noah is more convenient for passengers. The driver behind the wheel is just great, the visibility is excellent, the feeling of superiority over all the passenger fuss underfoot, like in a city bus or a large SUV.

Heating and air conditioning work great. Operation from +40 to -40 degrees allows you to maintain a comfortable temperature in the cabin. One oven does the job. One air conditioner would have been enough, but the second was not superfluous, especially in summer traffic jams in big cities.

It is too early to sum up the results, the machine is in operation, but the advantages and disadvantages have shown themselves in two years. So, the undoubted advantages of the car: large capacity, interior comfort, unpretentiousness of the engine and gearbox, a fairly large ground clearance, spectacular appearance.

There are only two drawbacks - high fuel consumption and a weak front suspension. Perhaps for some they will seem significant. Again, a lot or a little of 11 liters per 100 km on the highway and 14 in the city for a car weighing more than 2 tons? In general, this is the first car that “delayed” with me for more than one year, seventh in a row.

I won't sell. The repair in the apartment has not been completed yet, all the necessary furniture has not been bought, again, summer is ahead, so we will go.
