Toyota crown old. Reviews from Toyota Crown owners

Toyota Crown (Crown) is a truly legendary model of the Japanese concern. It is the oldest car produced by Toyota. In total, 15 generations of the car were produced during production, the last of which came out this year. About Toyota Сrown (S220) 2018 and will be discussed in this article.

Model history

The first car with the name Crown appeared in 1955. Then it was a small car, the size of a 401 Moskvich. The car was designed primarily for the needs of a taxi.

Toyota Crown first generation

Over time, from generation to generation, the car grew in size and added luxury, until from the fourth generation, which was produced from 1971-1974, it did not position itself as the second luxury car in Japan after the Toyota Century.

Fourth generation Toyota Crown

Crowns began to come to our country, starting from the fifth generation, which was produced from 1974 By 1979 years. And then all generations of the car can be found on our roads. Cars in Russia were very much appreciated, both for their reliability, and for their incredible, inaccessible to other models, saturation with a variety of options and electronic "chips".

fifth generation Toyota Crown

Fifteenth generation car first saw the light at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2017 of the year. Then the car was rolled out as a concept car, although it was completely ready for mass production. The prestigious sedan began to be sold in June 2018. And what is curious is that these cars have already appeared in our country, despite the fact that they are not officially sold here.

As for sales abroad, Toyota does not plan them, except for countries where there is left-hand traffic. However, there is no doubt that a sufficient number of them will be sold in Russia, despite the more than decent cost. This model has such a high charisma.

Appearance

Toyota Crown is one of the most luxurious cars in Japan, and its appearance should emphasize this. Therefore, a revolution in appearance could not be expected. The appearance of the model has smoothly evolved from the previous generation.

Fourteenth generation Toyota Crown

The huge grille that cuts the front bumper in half remains the same as before, although now its shape has become more strict. The side air intakes and fog lights are still in their old places, but their shape has become more modern or rather fancy.

New Toyota Crown S220 front view

Headlights, although new, are similar in shape to those of the previous generation of the model. By the way, that the fog lights, that the headlights, even in the basic configuration of the car are LED.

Side view, despite the obvious continuity, has a very significant difference. Now a small window has appeared on the rear pillar. This gave the car a swift coupe-like silhouette.

Toyota Crown side view

The rear of the sedan has a harmonious finished design. The exhaust pipes are organically integrated into the rear bumper. The taillights have the same shape as the previous generation of the car, but they are fully LED.

The rear of the Toyota Crown in a new body

By the way, simultaneously with the start of sales of the serial Toyota Crown, the Toyota Modellista International factory studio prepared its own version of the external body kit. All changes relate exclusively to appearance, Japanese tuners from Modellista do not climb into the technical part.

dimensions

As usual, with each new generation, the size of cars increases. The same thing happened with the new Japanese sedan. True, they increased quite a bit. The length is 15 mm, the width remains the same, and the height has increased by only 5 mm. Thus, the overall dimensions of the Toyota Crown are:

  • Length - 4910 mm;
  • Width - 1800 mm;
  • Height - 1455 mm;
  • Ground clearance - 135 mm;
  • Wheelbase - 2920 mm.

Interior and interior equipment

The flagship of the Japanese company is Toyota Century. But it cannot be considered a machine for mere mortals. Centuri is a machine for high-ranking politicians, ministers, presidents of large firms. The flagship of Toyota for ordinary people is just the Crown . And it is on this sedan that the engineers of the Japanese company install all the most advanced systems and the most advanced technical stuffing.

Front panel Toyota Crown

In almost all trim levels, the Japanese sedan has a fully leather interior. True, sedans of basic configurations can be ordered with a cheaper interior made of fabric. In addition, polished aluminum, expensive woods and carbon fiber are used in the interior trim.

Interior color options for the new Toyota Crown

The center console houses two LCD displays. On the top, which is slightly smaller, with a diagonal of 8 inches, information from the multimedia system and navigation is displayed. The lower 8-inch monitor is designed to control climate control and other minor vehicle systems.

LCD displays on the front console of the Toyota Crown

The dashboard of the sedan is somewhat old-fashioned, analog. By this, Japanese designers emphasize the solidity of the car and its loyalty to old traditions. However, a color multifunctional LCD display is still present between the scales. It displays information about the parameters of the engine.

In addition to the systems responsible for security, which will be discussed separately, one of the main electronic systems, the pride of Toyota, is the "connected car" system - Data Communication Module. With the help of this system, the sedan is constantly connected to the global Internet network and is connected with other road users. In addition, this system constantly monitors the technical condition of the machine and gives advice on possible malfunctions and ways to eliminate them. In the event of an airbag deployment, the connected car system automatically calls the rescue services.

  • Passenger;
  • 2 side pillows;
  • 2 pillows protecting the legs of the driver and passenger;
  • 2 side inflatable rods on the windows.

Technical filling

Traditionally, Toyota Crown is produced in rear-wheel drive. Namely, this architecture provides maximum comfort when driving. The new 2018 Toyota Crown is no exception. True, it is possible to order Crown in all-wheel drive.

The Japanese novelty is made on the new global platform of the Japanese concern TNGA. By the way, it is on this platform that the new Lexus LS model is already being produced. True, this platform had to be pretty redone to adapt to the Crown, since the Lexus is 100 mm wider.

Lexus LS new generation

The suspension of all wheels is independent. Front - double-lever, rear - multi-link. A special intelligent suspension has been developed for the RS sports equipment, in which a manual setting mode will be available.

The chassis of the new Toyota Crown

There are three power plants for the Japanese sedan, one petrol and two hybrid, which have the following technical characteristics:

  • 1) Petrol 4-cylinder engine volume of 2 liters (1998 cm³), power 245 l. With., with a torque of 350 Nm at 4400 rpm. These engines are equipped with a turbocharger and have a moderate fuel consumption of 6.6 liters per 100 km;
  • 2) Hybrid power plant consists of a 4-cylinder gasoline engine with a volume of 2.5 liters (2487 cm³), 184 l. With., with a torque of 221 N * m at 5400 rpm. The gasoline engine, using an electromechanical variator, is aggregated with an electric motor with a capacity of 145 hp. With. The total power of the power plant is 226 liters. With. This power plant, despite the high power, consumes less fuel than the previous one, gasoline. Its consumption in the combined cycle is 5,5 liters per 100 km. By the way, all-wheel drive transmission is installed only on cars with this power plant;

  • 3) Hybrid power plant consists of a V-shaped, 6-cylinder gasoline engine with a volume of 3.5 liters (3456 cm³), 299 l. With., with a torque of 356 N * m at 5100 rpm. This gasoline engine is paired with an electric motor with a capacity of 180 liters. With. The total power of this installation is 359 liters. With. It is this power plant that is installed on Lexus LC and LS series cars. Fuel consumption for cars equipped with these engines is 6.3 liters per 100 km in the combined cycle.

Transmission

Interestingly, each motor has its own gearbox:

  • 1) The two-liter petrol engine is aggregated exclusively with an eight-speed automatic;
  • 2) For a hybrid with a 2.5-liter engine, an electromechanical variator is provided, which was mentioned above;
  • 3) Well, for the top-end hybrid, with a 3.5-liter engine, an innovative gearbox is provided, consisting of a four-speed “automatic” without a torque converter and three planetary gears.

Reliable braking of the Crown is provided by ventilated brake discs on all wheels. As for the wheels, all cars are equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels.

Complete set

Japanese engineers have provided 4 options for their flagship: B, G, S And RS . Let's consider them in more detail.

Equipment B

This is, in fact, the basic equipment of the car. The main visible difference between this configuration and others are the door handles in body color. Inside, the car features fabric upholstery.

Among the electronics, the sedan has almost everything described above. The only thing that in this configuration is not heated seats, and the ability to remember their settings. Among the electronic options, there is no AFS smart road lighting system, automatic wipers. All electronic systems responsible for security and multimedia, even in the basic configuration, are present in full.

As for the price, in Japan, the Toyota Crown in the "B" configuration is sold at a price of 4,606,000 yen, which corresponds to $ 41,000.

S package

This is the second complete set of Crown equipment. Outwardly, it does not differ from the previous configuration. The car also has handles in body color. But inside the differences are huge. This is the first equipment that has a full leather interior. True, it is made in one color. In addition, the cabin has heated seats and steering wheel.

Of the electronic options on the sedan, there is a system for automatically turning on the wipers with a rain sensor. Prices for such cars in Japan start at 4,747,000 yen ($42,300).

Equipment G

Of the external differences, these cars for the first time receive chrome door handles. In addition, the doors themselves receive automatic closers.

From the comfort systems in the cabin on Crowns in the “G” configuration, electric rear seats and their heating appear. The front seats have a position memory function. Climate control on the car is installed three-zone. Now, for the first time, rear passengers will be able to set up a separate microclimate for themselves.

From the electronic options on the machine, the AFS adaptive road lighting system appears.
Such cars cost in the Land of the Rising Sun from 5,416,000 Yen ($48,200).

RS package

As casually mentioned above, this equipment is considered sports. Of the external differences on the car, in addition to chrome door handles, a sports spoiler will also be installed. Leather interior for the first time in two colors.

However, the main differences between this configuration and others lie in the technical stuffing. It is exclusively in this configuration that an adaptive suspension is installed on the car, which allows you to more confidently take turns and generally more comfortable to drive.

As for comfort for rear passengers, the RS trim does not include heated rear seats, power adjustments, or three-zone cruise control.

Prices for Crowns in this configuration start at 5,594,000 yen, which corresponds to 49,800 dollars.

What for what?

Despite the fact that the new Toyota Crown has just begun to be sold in the Japanese islands, these cars have already begun to be delivered to Russia. For example, the drom.ru website already offers one Crown in the RS Advance configuration, with a hybrid engine based on a 2.5-liter gasoline engine. Such a car in Vladivostok is sold for 4,520,000 rubles ($68,300).

As for the previous generation sedans, their offer in Russia is extensive. For example, Crowns, the beginning of production of the 14th generation, 2012 - 2013, in the Far East can be purchased from 1,500,000 rubles ($ 22,600). There are, of course, separate offers and cheaper ones, but these are obviously problem cars.

Restyled cars, starting in 2015, start selling from 2,000,000 rubles ($ 30,000). There are also cheaper options in this sector, but these are most likely broken restored cars.

8 generation

The executive car Toyota Crown is the pride of Toyota and one of the oldest Japanese models, the production of which was launched back in 1955. As generations changed, Toyota Crown became more and more comfortable, and with the advent of premium versions, its very name began to imply such a high level of equipment, workmanship and quality of materials that the possession of this model serves as a kind of confirmation of the high social status of the owner. Actually, the emblem in the form of a crown on the grille serves as an obvious confirmation of the prestige of the model.

This generation (S130) is the eighth in a row. A special feature of it is a very large number of modifications, because this car was offered not only in luxurious versions, but also in rather utilitarian trim levels intended for use as a "workhorse". In addition, this classic rear-wheel drive car was produced in different body styles: hardtop (1987-1991), sedan (1987-1995) and 5-door Crown Wagon wagon (1987-1999). The latter is one of the largest Toyota wagons: it is difficult to imagine anything more suitable for practical use than a combination of a commercial and passenger car in one person. This generation turned out to be so successful that even after the release of the hardtop moved to the next generation (S140), the sedan and station wagon in the 130th body, having undergone restyling, stayed on the assembly line for several more years (the station wagon survived two generations for the longest time) .

The 1987 Toyota Crown used a very wide range of petrol and diesel engines of varying size and power. The simplest gasoline versions were equipped with two-liter in-line "sixes" 1G-E with a capacity of 105 hp. Of course, this is clearly not enough to provide a heavy car with optimal dynamics, and more “charged” configurations were equipped with 1G-GE and 1G-GZE (Super Charger) engines with a capacity of 150 and 170 horsepower, respectively, as well as a 3-liter 7M-GE (190 hp) In the late 80s - early 90s, the line was supplemented by a two-liter 1G-FE with a capacity of 135 hp. and engines of the new generation of the JZ series with a volume of 2.5 and 3 liters (180 and 230 hp). The apotheosis of power for the Crown was the eight-cylinder 260-horsepower V-shaped 1UZ-FE with 350 Nm of torque. For inexpensive sedans and station wagons, diesel engines of the 2L series (2.4 liters), atmospheric and turbocharged with power from 73 to 100 hp, were also offered. Separate modifications were equipped with engines running on gas.

It should be noted the high survivability and reliability of Toyota gasoline engines of those generations, their ease of maintenance and unpretentiousness. As well as the indestructibility of the chassis of the Toyota Crown. Ahead - independent double wishbone suspension, time-tested design. At the rear, either a continuous axle or an independent suspension - a gearbox with drives. Steering of individual modifications - with variable force on the steering wheel. On the most luxurious version of the Royal Saloon G, the TEMS system (active electronically controlled suspension) was installed, with which the car turns into a “ship” floating on the road. At speed, the system automatically switches to LOW mode, and TEMS SPORT mode is used to suppress roll in corners.

The undoubted advantage of older generations of Crown is the presence of a frame, which is a huge plus for used cars, given the decent age of cars in this series. So other comparisons of the Toyota Crown sound quite justified: with a “tank”, and even a high-speed one. Of the safety features in the 130th Crown, in addition to three-point belts, stiffening bars in the doors and a folding steering column are used. Some versions can be equipped with a driver's airbag (since 1989), front belt pretensioners, ABS, TRC, ESC systems.

Despite the fact that, by modern standards, the cars of this series are morally and physically obsolete, the strength of their design and the durability of components and assemblies still make it possible to find specimens in good technical condition. Not far off is the transition of this family to the category of retrocars. Actually, the eighth generation Toyota Crown is one of the most beautiful classic cars, belonging to the “these are no longer produced” category.

9 generation

The Toyota Crown is a member of the family of full-size luxury sedans. In 1991, in parallel with the production of the previous generation in the back of the S130, the release of the ninth generation hardtop, built on the S140 platform, was launched, although in fact the main changes were reduced only to the interior and appearance, since the frame, chassis and steering remained unchanged. It can also be noted that the design of the ninth generation partly influenced the changes in the appearance of the previous one, which was reflected in the sedan and station wagon after the restyling carried out in the same year. In turn, in the appearance of this Crown, you can see motifs borrowed from the Lexus LS 400 luxury sedan, the production of which was launched two years earlier. In general, we can talk about the ninth generation Toyota Crown as a global modernization, which resulted in a very harmonious car that combines high technology, comfort, power and become at the same time.
For the 1991 model year Toyota Crown, several trim levels were provided. From the simplest: Super Select and Super Saloon - to the most luxurious Royal series: Royal Saloon and Royal Touring, which boast the richest equipment, including options such as: air suspension, factory tinted windows, power all seats, cruise control. control, dual air conditioning, CD changer, etc. The Touring versions are distinguished by a “harder” suspension setting and the presence of a 5-speed automatic transmission. The remaining modifications were equipped with a 4-speed automatic.

Toyota Crown of those years were equipped with four types of engines. If we talk about specific models, then these are mass-series engines used in many Toyota models. Two-liter 135-horsepower 1G-FE as the base for petrol versions. A step up - 1JZ-GE with a volume of 2.5 liters and a power of 180 forces - this is not only one of the most popular engines in the line, but also a fairly reliable, unpretentious engine. Like its counterpart in the 2JZ-GE series with a volume of 3.0 liters and a power of 230 hp. Diesel modifications were equipped with a 2.4-liter turbodiesel of two modifications: 2L-TE (97 hp) and 2L-THE (100 hp), they require increased attention during operation, otherwise typical “diseases” are possible engines of this series: overheating, problems with high pressure fuel pump and turbine.

The Crown's suspension is fully independent and provides a very smooth ride. A significant part of the cars came with air suspension. However, high smoothness also has a downside: with tired airbags or springs with shock absorbers, a well-traveled Crown may be prone to buildup on gentle road waves and (given the dimensions of the body) becomes sensitive to strong gusts of side wind. You can often find cars in which the body sags under slight loads, so when buying a used car, you should pay special attention to this. Among other shortcomings of the Toyota Crown in this body, insufficient steering sharpness can be noted, but, by the way, this is inherent in all cars that use worm gear steering.

In terms of safety, the Toyota Crown in the 140th body is not much different from its predecessor. In the options driver's airbag, ABS, ESC, TRC. The brakes on all wheels are disc and quite effective. Toyota Crown S140 is a classic rear-wheel drive car and the last in its family, which was based on a frame platform. With all the shortcomings of this design, due to modern requirements for passive safety, it also has its advantages - good isolation from vibrations and noise emanating from units and tires and greater reliability of the body as a whole, which is especially important for a used car.

Toyota Crown is a reliable, strong and unpretentious car with a very high level of comfort. Cars of this brand are highly valued not only for their luxurious interior, but also for the high durability of components and assemblies, so their cost in the secondary market does not fall as significantly as that of other brands. For the poor fan of rear-wheel drive and “real Japanese cars,” the ninth-generation Toyota Crown is the best option, especially if you can find a copy in good technical condition that will last for years.

10 generation

The creators of the anniversary, tenth generation Toyota Crown dared to take a step largely revolutionary - the rejection of the frame structure. As a result, the weight of the car has decreased by more than one hundred kilograms. The status of the model remained unchanged, the popularity of which has been very high for several generations and is supported by an appropriate level of quality and reliability. At home, the car finds its application in a fairly wide field of activity: from ordinary utilitarian taxis to "bossy" cars with a luxurious interior and a lot of "gadgets" designed to provide complete comfort for those who are used to looking at the world exclusively from the car window, conveniently lounging on the back sofa.
The premiere of Toyota Crown in a new body took place at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1995. Compared with the previous generation, the number of modifications has significantly expanded. This is partly due to the fact that in the same year the production of the eighth generation sedan was discontinued, which lasted longer than the due date on the assembly line, and the tenth generation was already represented by two types of bodies: hardtop and sedan. In addition, in order to expand the boundaries of sales, left-hand drive analogues were offered for other markets. In both bodies, all-wheel drive versions (only with automatic transmission) were offered, which were not available in previous generations, and sedans also had “mechanics” (the simplest Super Deluxe equipment). The most expensive versions are still the chic hardtops of the Royal Series trim levels. In addition to the luxurious Royal Saloon modification, the Royal Touring modification with a sports suspension can be distinguished. After the completion of the release of the hardtop of this series in 1999, the sedan was produced before 2001.

As for engines, their number has not changed compared to the previous generation. Of the gasoline ones, these are still popular for those years in-line "sixes", which are highly reliable: 1G-FE with a capacity of 135 hp; 2.5-liter unit 1JZ-GE (180 hp) and three-liter D-4 2JZ-GE (220 hp). However, shortly after the release of the tenth generation, the 1JZ (1996) and 1G (1998) engines underwent modernization, receiving a VVT system, an intake manifold geometry change system, distributorless ignition and an electronically controlled throttle. Their power has increased, respectively, to 160 and 200 hp, but at the same time, the requirements for operation have also increased, especially for the 1G engine, on which now, in particular, the valves are bent when the timing belt breaks. The 2L-TE turbodiesel and the 1G-GPE gasified modification were intended to a greater extent for commercial purposes: taxis, rentals, service delivery cars, etc.

As mentioned above, the Toyota Crown S150 now has a load-bearing body, and the steering system is represented by a rack and pinion drive, which radically - for the better - affected the handling. The choice of the car was offered with different types of transmission: 5-speed manual, 4- and 5-speed automatic. The latter is in expensive trim levels. Front and rear suspension Toyota Crown - independent. On all-wheel drive versions, a FullTime type system was used: permanent all-wheel drive with an asymmetrical center differential and a hydromechanical lock-up clutch. Under normal conditions, the redistribution of torque between the front and rear axles occurs according to the formula 30/70, with slipping - 50/50.

In terms of active and passive safety, Toyota Crown is at the level of the second half of the 90s. In the basic configuration, the car was equipped with airbags for the driver and front passenger, child seat mounts, stiffeners in the doors, anti-lock brakes. And in top-end trim levels, the car could be equipped with a more advanced set of active safety systems: Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS).

With its soft suspension and excellent ride quality, the Toyota Crown boasts the ability to swallow a lot of the blemishes of our road builders. Even having lost the frame, the Crown retained its high strength, and the body is reliably protected from corrosion. This is a very friendly car, quite easy to drive, distinguished by endurance and a very high level of comfort.

11 generation

Toyota Crown is one of the most luxurious cars designed for the Japanese domestic market. The first copies of the eleventh generation (170th body) rolled off the assembly line in September 1999. Compared to its predecessor, the new Crown has added a few centimeters in width and length, has become a little higher, thereby increasing the interior space. The changes also affected the layout of the engine compartment, the front overhang became shorter, although the wheelbase did not change. The fuel tank has shifted to the center, which has freed up additional space for the trunk. In terms of design, the model has largely retained the features of the previous generation, but received smoother body lines. The release of a hardtop that did not meet modern safety requirements had to be abandoned.
On the other hand, Crown is now represented by different modifications: Royal and Athlete, each with its own set of trim levels. In the 130th body, there was already a complete set with this name, but now it has been put forward for a separate equipment level. If Crown Royal is a "classic of the genre", then Athlete is the same Crown, but with a sporty character. Accordingly, there are other suspension settings, another (5-speed) automatic transmission, less ground clearance. External differences are also striking - in optics, bumpers, a radiator grille, and a pattern of alloy wheels. Both versions provide a very wide range of equipment both as standard and as additional options. The Athlete modification formed the basis for the creation of the Crown Estate station wagon (the previous Crown Wagon station wagon in the 130th body was hopelessly outdated in 11 years of its existence). Four round headlights, a mesh radiator grille, a tuning suspension went to the new model from a sports modification, however, like other accessories: a leather steering wheel, special seats, xenon headlights.

Toyota Crown in the 170th body was equipped with several types of engines. The base power unit for the Royal and Estate Athlete E-type trims was a two-liter 1G-FE with 160 hp. Higher trim levels were equipped with 2.5- and 3.0-liter JZ series engines. They were also installed on the Crown Athlete, and the base was a 2.5-liter with 196 hp, and the Athlete V versions were equipped with a turbocharged 1JZ-GTE with 280 hp. For the Crown Royal, a “mild hybrid” option was also offered - a three-liter 2JZ-FSE combined with an electric motor. The power of such a power plant is 200 hp.

The Toyota Crown's suspension provides an exceptional level of comfort, but it lacks some stiffness, which is why on our roads, where active steering is often required from the driver, the Crown's smooth and majestic ride turns into roll and lack of controllability. That is why the more “collected” version of Athlete is much more in demand. Some Crown trims came in all-wheel drive versions: 4 WD FullTime with an asymmetrical center differential and a hydromechanical lock-up clutch. Expensive configurations were equipped with air bags instead of springs.

NASVA has crash-tested this generation of Toyota Crown twice, in 1999 and 2001. The vehicle demonstrated body integrity in full overlap and sideshift frontal impacts. In the latter case, the only complaints were made for the deformation of the feet of the driver and passenger, despite the fact that, in general, the position of the dummies after the collision was completely preserved. An excellent result was demonstrated in a side impact, while even the possibility of opening both doors was preserved. Note that Toyota Crown equipment includes front airbags, side airbags (optional), from active systems: TCS (traction control), BAS (auxiliary braking), VSC (motion stabilization).

Ease of driving, no feeling of fatigue on the road, comfortable driving position - these are, of course, the characteristic features of Toyota Crown. This generation, in fact, embodies a fusion of the best engineering ideas of the 90s of the last century and occupies an intermediate niche between more modern models put into operation after the demonstration of the Zero Crown concept car and outdated samples of previous generations.

12 generation

The long history of the Toyota Crown, one of Japan's oldest top-class models, has been repeatedly revolutionized. One of the most significant was at one time the rejection of the frame in favor of a load-bearing body. By the time the eleventh generation appeared, a number of questions had accumulated, no longer of a technical, but of a conceptual nature. Toyota was often accused of the very conservativeness that often tends to turn into "insipid and dull." Therefore, when developing the 12th generation model, the designers decided to move away from the classic canons and create Crown from scratch. Actually, the concept car that formed the basis of the model was called Zero Crown, which can also be translated as “Crown from scratch”.
A new strategy was put forward: "Not just performance, but style." Moreover, both the first and the second should not compete, but act in close unity. A completely new chassis was created that could take on a larger body. In terms of interior space, the new Crown surpassed the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-series. The base and length of both axles have increased, while the load on them is distributed so as to achieve maximum controllability. In the external details, the desire of designers is clearly visible not only to make the car stylish, but also to improve the aerodynamics of its body. Thanks to the active use of parts made of aluminum alloys, it was possible to make the car lighter. And this, in turn, played a positive role in improving the speed characteristics of the new car.

A no less revolutionary decision touched engines - in-line “sixes”, with which Toyota premium cars were traditionally associated, went into oblivion. They were replaced by engines of the new GR series, first introduced in 2003 in the domestic Japanese market. These are six-cylinder V-shaped engines with a volume of 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 liters with a capacity of 215, 256 and 315 horsepower, respectively. As with the previous generation, the 2003 Crown was offered in two versions: the plush Royal and the sportier Athlete with stiffer suspension. And, as before, the most powerful engine was installed only on the Crown Athlete, complete with a 6-speed gearbox. However, it could also be chosen for trim levels with a lower rank. A 5-speed automatic transmission was standard. A rich list of equipment relied on both modifications and was designed to satisfy the needs of the most demanding customers. Plus, you can add the release of special series. In 2005, small changes were made to the front and rear of the car. From the same year, car production began in China.

Suspension Toyota Crown independent. Front - double wishbones, rear - multi-link design. In general, it is more rigid than that of the previous generation. On expensive versions, a TEMS air adjustable suspension with an AVS system was used, the parameters of which can be adjusted as desired, and all brakes, front and rear, are ventilated discs with an increased diameter of the discs themselves, for better braking dynamics. All-wheel drive, used on individual versions, is permanent, with an asymmetrical center differential and a locking hydraulic clutch. Steering - rack and pinion with electric booster.

Starting from this generation, the Toyota Crown is already equipped with VSC and TRC active safety systems as standard. Two airbags - driver and front passenger - by default. They can be supplemented with side airbags (standard in expensive trim levels). A lane departure warning system is available as an option. Body Toyota Crown - high strength.

Global improvement has definitely benefited Toyota Crown - the car turned out to be stylish, modern, even more powerful and proved its right to be considered an exemplary Japanese high-class sedan in the new century. However, numerous innovations, in particular the emergence of new engines, have significantly increased the requirements for operation. Therefore, owners of used Toyota Crowns of this generation should not expect low cost of ownership, as was typical for cars of previous generations.

13 generation

The 2008 Crown no longer offers the simple, inexpensive Royal Extra trim. Now it's just the chic Royal Saloon and Athlete. The first option is distinguished by an elegant design of the radiator grille, the square shape of the fog lamps. The key accent in the Athlete configuration is sportiness, which is indicated by a more predatory “muzzle” with a mesh radiator grille, wide cutouts in the front bumper, and round “eyes” of fog lamps. The modification of the Crown Hybrid with a hybrid power plant looks different in small things - a slightly different grille, light blue rear optics, a THS2 label under the rear right lamp. Since 2008, it has been produced on the basis of the Crown Athlete, since 2010 - on the basis of the Crown Royal. To commemorate the Crown's record-breaking 2009 production of over 5 million units since the first generation, Anniversary Editions and Special Editions were offered, featuring exclusive interior trim and some additional options. A year later, separate configurations were released for the 55th anniversary of the model.

The power units of traditional gasoline versions are the V-shaped “sixes” already familiar from the past generation with a direct injection system and variable valve timing: 4GR-FSE (2.5 liters, 215 hp), 3GR-FSE (3.0 l, 256 hp) and 2GR-FSE (3.5 l, 315 hp). Since 2010, the 2.5-liter engine has been a little "strangled" to suit the new requirements of environmental standards and, accordingly, taxation. As before, the most powerful engine in the series is only available on the Crown Athlete. At the same time, tuning studio Toyota Modellista offers a "charged" version of the "Crown Athlete+M Super Charger". The power of the 2GR-FSE with a mechanical supercharger reached 360 hp, and the torque rose from 368 to 498 Nm. Such an indicator as specific power is only 4.69 kg per force! The same 3.5-liter 2GR-FSE served as the basis for the second-generation hybrid power plant. In terms of power, it is only slightly inferior to a conventional engine, but in terms of the amount of exhaust gases it is comparable to a modest two-liter engine. An EV Drive mode is provided, in which the car can move for a short time only due to electricity.

Athlete and Royal trims are equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission with AI-SHIFT system and three operating modes: Sport, Snow, Eco mode. Both versions have all-wheel drive options ("i-Four" configurations). The Crown Hybrid modification comes with a CVT.

In addition, the Crown is equipped with the AI-AVS Damper Control System, VDIM Dynamics Management System and VGRS Active Steering System, all of which work in conjunction with a satellite navigator.

Toyota Crown demonstrates the highest level of approach to safety. The generation is standardly equipped with a whole range of electronic systems: anti-lock braking system (ABS with EBD), brake assist system (BAS), electronic stability control (ESP), traction control (TCS), adaptive road lighting (AFS). As an option, the latest development is available - a device that monitors the condition of the driver's eyes. In the event of a collision threat, if the driver's eyes are closed or not directed to the road, the device gives an alarm and activates emergency braking. The new platform is integrated with all control systems in the vehicle, resulting in twice the overall efficiency compared to the previous generation. Seven airbags are included as standard.

Despite the fact that the next, thirteenth generation of the Toyota Crown has already been released, the models of this generation are not very common on the market - protective measures are still affecting, and prices are biting enough. Accordingly, and spare parts, service too. Still, this Crown is definitely worth the money. After all, this is one of the most luxurious cars that are available on the used car market.

14 generation

In December 2012, it was launched into the fourteenth generation Toyota Crown series. Even from the ultra-modern design alone, one can affirmatively judge that this is a truly “royal” car, worthy of wearing a crown emblem on the grille. The Toyota Crown is the company's flagship and a car whose name has been associated with the highest level of comfort and production quality for almost six decades. The new generation Crown, built on the S210 platform, was the largest in the history of the model. The wheelbase is now 2.85m, 7cm longer than the previous generation Crown.
For several generations (starting from the eleventh), the car has been produced in two versions - the chic Royal and the sporty Athlete - with some differences in design, suspension settings and trim levels. The interior of the Crown Royal is built on the principle of "in harmony with the contrast": different colors of panels, seat upholstery details, a three-layer front panel create a feeling of airiness and at the same time depth, visually freeing up additional space. The Crown Athlete's colorways lean towards darker and less contrasting tones. For most configurations, an automatically shifting steering wheel and driver's seat are provided for ease of boarding and disembarking; electric, ventilation and heated front seats. The Crown Royal also has electric and heated rear seats. This luxury version also has dual air conditioning and a rear center armrest with integrated air conditioning control panel and audio system.

Three types of engines are installed on the Toyota Crown. For the Crown Royal, these are 2.5-liter engines. Base gasoline 4GR-FSE with direct injection and 203 hp, as well as a hybrid power plant based on the 2AR-FSE engine. Power is not so great - 178 hp, but amazingly low fuel consumption - only 4.3 liters per "hundred". Conversely, if converted to kilometers per liter, it turns out that the hybrid Crown is able to travel 23.2 km per liter, while with a conventional gasoline engine - 11.4 kilometers. Both of these engines are installed on the Crown Athlete, and in addition to them, there is also a 3.5-liter 2GR-FSE with 315 hp.

Suspension Toyota Crown - independent. Double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension. Having slightly expanded in size, the car at the same time acquired a lower center of gravity, which improved stability. The Crown Athlete features an Adaptive Variable Suspension System that provides high agility and directional stability while maintaining a high level of ride comfort in dynamic conditions in various situations. "Automatic" petrol versions are equipped with a built-in DRAMS driving mode and acceleration control controller, which adapts to the actions of the driver. Crown with conventional engines are equipped with automatic transmissions. For a 2.5-liter engine, this is a 6-speed automatic transmission (rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive). For 2GR-FSE - 8-speed. The hybrid Crown is equipped with a CVT.

This generation has several default preventive protection systems on all trim levels: these are the Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC) systems; brake force distribution (EBD) as an addition to ABS; traction control system (TCS). As options: intelligent head light control system; radar cruise control, which provides not only constant speed control, but also control of acceleration and braking depending on the traffic situation. The Toyota Crown earned top marks in the JNCAP rating for its high level of crash protection. In particular, the driver and passengers are protected by seven (Crown Athlete) or nine (Crown Royal) airbags, as well as active head restraints.

The Toyota Crown is a full-size luxury sedan from Toyota.
Only the driver of the American Lincoln Town Car, accustomed to comfort and luxury, can appreciate the true value of the Crown for Japan. The same concept was laid down by developers in all generations of Toyota Crown sedans, starting from the first days of production of this model.

History of creation

Toyota Crown is the oldest car among Toyota sedans. Mass production of Crown cars began in 1955, and just three years later, the Japanese automaker began exporting these cars to the United States.

Initially, the sedan was designed as a car intended for use in the domestic taxi service. However, by the time mass production was launched, it was decided to produce a sedan in two different configurations. The Crown label was assigned to the car for personal use. The second variety - Toyota Master - was designed to work in a taxi and had slight external differences. For example, at the Crown, the tailgate brackets were on the C-pillar, that is, the doors swung open in the opposite direction (which is why they were ironically called "suicide doors"). The Toyota Master had the same door design as most of today's cars.

In the United States, these cars were supplied from the 50th to the 71st year of the XX century. On the European continent (to Belgium, Holland, England, Finland), the export of Toyota Crown began in 1964.

The evolution of Toyota Crown specifications

In order to objectively evaluate all the advantages of this spacious sedan, which distinguish it favorably from similar cars of other brands, one should study in more detail the entire chronology of its evolution. It is curious to observe how in each subsequent series, of which there are already 14 by today, the most advanced technical innovations of the corresponding time were applied.

The very first modification of the Crown (I generation) did not stand out in terms of technical characteristics. It was a classic rear-wheel drive sedan with a 1.5-liter 60-horsepower engine and a 3-speed manual transmission. The car was produced in sedan and station wagon form factors (Toyopet Masterline), with a 3- or 6-seater saloon.

The second-generation Toyota featured a stylish design inspired by the exterior of the 1960 Ford Falcon. For the first time, the car was equipped with a proprietary 2-speed Toyoglide gearbox. Gone are the 4-door utility body and the Masterline label. In 1965, in order to increase the speed characteristics of the machine, a 6-cylinder in-line engine of the M series with a volume of 2 liters was installed as a power unit.

Also began mass production of the Crown Eight variety with a reinforced V8 engine. In this model, power windows, a central electric lock, a speed control system and a 3-speed automatic transmission appeared for the first time.

The appearance of the 1967 sedan has changed quite a bit, but technically the car has been significantly improved. The main technological breakthrough can be considered a 2.3-liter engine. In the same series, a modification of the station wagon class was presented - with additional seats and movable glass in the luggage compartment door.

A striking representative of the third generation (series S60, 1971) is the Super Saloon model. In general, Saloon is a whole line of trim levels, in the name of which, depending on the class of the car, only the first word changes. For example, the most respectable modification of the Toyota Crown was called the Royal Saloon.

The 4th generation model received a popular nickname among Japanese motorists "kujira", which means "white whale". The functionality of the car was replenished with an electric drive for the luggage compartment hood, which was opened by reverse rotation of the ignition key, and such a specific feature as a personal radio tuning key for rear seat passengers.

In the 5th generation in 1974, an electronically controlled fuel injection mechanism was introduced for the first time. The dimensions of the car were also expanded - the length was 4.7 m. The frame performed the function of the supporting element of the body. In terms of design, the models of this series were very reminiscent of products from the American automotive industry. In those days, it was American engineering and style concepts that were considered reference. In the export version, the Toyota Crown of the S80 line was equipped with a 3-speed automatic transmission or a 4-speed manual transmission. In the domestic Japanese car market, a model was also sold with a 5-speed manual.

The production of machines of the sixth generation was launched in 1979. This is the last series in which a coupe model was introduced. Two-door Celica sports cars were mainly intended for young car enthusiasts, while two-door Crowns were in demand among the older generation. The interior of the body was upholstered in genuine leather. Not without the next pleasant options that increase the comfort of the car: climate control, a glazed sunroof, a car radio and a miniature refrigerator connected to a separate compressor.

In models of the seventh Crown line, the mass production of which began in 1983, the set of additional functions was significantly expanded. For example, in the Royal Saloon modification, the climate control system was divided into two zones: driver and passenger. Also added is an independent audio system for rear passengers, the option of automatic on / off headlights, etc. The Super Saloon 3.0 was the first to feature a 5-speed automatic transmission. Toyota Crown cars of the seventh generation with a diesel engine quickly gained popularity among taxi drivers in Hong Kong and Singapore.

The S130 series is the eighth generation. Its distinctive feature can be considered a huge variety of modifications, since this machine was produced both in luxury versions and in rather modest configurations - for use as a reliable "workhorse". Moreover, models were produced with different body types: station wagon, hardtop and sedan. The first is the Crown Wagon, one of the largest Toyota station wagons: it is difficult to find something more suitable for multi-purpose use than a symbiosis of a commercial and passenger car.

The eighth generation gained such popularity that even after the start of production in 1991 of the ninth generation hardtop (S140), the sedan and wagon of the S130 series, having undergone a restyling procedure, were produced for several more years (sedan - until 1995, station wagon - until 1999).

In the ninth generation, cars were made in two varieties - Hardtop and Majesta. These models share the same features as the previously developed export version of the Lexus LS, in particular the V8 engine.

In the tenth generation models, which began to be produced in 1995, Japanese engineers decided to abandon the design based on the carrier frame, which has become classic for this class of machines.

The eleventh generation of Toyota Crown is different in that the design of the body took into account the current trends of our time: the “immense” hood of the car was significantly shortened while maintaining the same dimensions as the previous generation. This was done to expand the space and improve comfort inside the cabin. The most outstanding modification in the lineup of this generation is the Toyota Athlete V, equipped with a heavy-duty branded 1JZ-GTE turbocharged engine.

Even before the start of production of 11th generation cars, Toyota fans had accumulated a wide range of claims against the manufacturer, and not even a technical one, but rather an ideological one. The automaker was accused of excessive conservatism, which sooner or later degrades to "ordinary and gray." Therefore, when designing the 12th generation model line, the developers rejected the classical principles and their own long-term traditions. As a result, a prototype was created, which became the basis of a new series, which was called Zero Crown, which literally means "Crown from scratch".

A new concept was approved: "Not only functionality, but also style." At the same time, both canons should not contradict each other, but harmoniously combine. A fundamentally new chassis was designed, capable of carrying a larger body. In terms of interior capacity, the updated Crown surpassed even the Mercedes-Benz E-class and BMW 5-series. The wheelbase and the length of both axles have expanded, and the load on them has been dispersed so that the best maneuverability is achieved.

Motors have undergone no less revolutionary changes - in-line 6-cylinder engines, which were previously equipped with Toyota luxury cars, have sunk into oblivion. Instead, new engines of the GR series appeared, first installed in 2003 on cars for the domestic Japanese car market. These are 6-cylinder V-shaped 2.5-, 3- and 3.5-liter engines with a capacity of 215, 256 and 315 hp, respectively. With. It was from this generation that all Crown modifications, even in minimal configurations, began to be equipped with VSC and TRC intelligent security systems.

The developers, inspired by the tremendous success of the previous generation sedan, decided not to change the well-chosen proportions when creating the 13th model range, but only to slightly adjust the design. As for the interior, compared to the previous generation, where the main focus was on fine-tuning the suspension to increase dynamic and agile performance, the concept of the updated Crown was to return to the classic principles of comfort and respectability inherent in premium cars.

It is for these reasons that the 2008 Crown lineup lacks relatively inexpensive Royal Extra modifications. From now on, only luxurious models of Royal Saloon and Athlete are produced. For the first time, cars began to be equipped with a 3D satellite navigator, combined with the built-in G-BOOK geolocation system. This intelligent system can calculate the trajectory of turns on the map and independently shift gears in the automatic transmission, helping the driver to increase or decrease speed. Among other innovative gadgets, one can also highlight a night vision device that can recognize people crossing the highway.

In 2012, the mass production of the S210 series sedans began. This is the 14th, today the latest generation of Crown. On-board systems are controlled using a multifunctional touch screen. Most of the latest generation cars are equipped with a modern 2.5-liter V6 engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The most powerful model of the series - Athlete - is equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine and an 8-speed "automatic".

Curious facts about the Toyota Crown

The label "crown" was often used in the names of other products of the Japanese automaker, since this word is considered in the corporation as a kind of symbol of success. Crown in English means "crown", and, for example, Corolla is a "miniature crown" in Latin. The name of another famous model series - Camry - is a phonetic sound of the Japanese word "kanmuri", also meaning crown. The automaker also produced cars with the Corona label, which is also equivalent to the English “crown” and the Russian “crown”.

Luxury sedans are the closest competition for Japan's leading automakers. Each automaker strives to produce its own models that can compete with the Toyota Crown in the domestic market. This competition, in addition to purely image considerations, also has a completely utilitarian goal: luxury sedans are always in great demand from government agencies that buy them as vehicles for government leaders, police, etc.

For example, Nissan produces a whole line of similar cars under the labels Cedric, Gloria, Fuga. Honda releases the Legends model, which is known far beyond the borders of the country. Mitsubishi has a Debonair model, Mazda has a 929 series

Last fall, the fifteenth generation Crown became one of the main novelties of the Tokyo motor show, but then Toyota showed the car and were stingy with details. And now the summer of 2018 has come - the time when the car, according to the plan, should get on the conveyor. As expected, the production Toyota Crown is no different from the "concept". But the difference with the previous model is great!

For the first time in its history, the four-door Crown has got additional windows in the rear roof pillars, which makes the car look more respectable in profile. Dimensions with the change of generations have not changed much: length - 4910 mm (15 mm more than the outgoing model), width - 1800 mm, height - 1455 mm. But the wheelbase grew immediately by 70 mm to 2920 mm. As before, the range will include the "sporty" version of Athlete and the "luxurious" Royal, which differ in decor and finishes.

The new Crown has retained the classic layout but moved to the new GA-L (TNGA Global Architecture) modular platform and now shares many similarities with the . Although the size of the “trolley” had to be adapted, because the LS is 100 mm wider than the Crown. Front double wishbone suspension, rear - multi-link from the outgoing Lexus GS model, springs are installed in a circle.

Compared to the previous sedan, here the center of gravity is reduced by 15 mm, the weight distribution along the axes is close to ideal (50:50). The company carried out driving fine-tuning of the cars at the Nurburgring, and the electronics, in addition to the usual Normal and Sport modes, have the most extreme Sport + preset. Crown's character must be fighting!

The base sedan is equipped with a two-liter 8AR-FTS turbo four with a capacity of 245 hp. (ten forces more than the previous model), an eight-speed "automatic" and exclusively rear-wheel drive. And all other versions are now hybrid.

The initial hybrid has almost the same power unit as the one, but adapted to the classic layout. The four-cylinder aspirated 2.5 of the Dynamic Force family (model A25A-FXS) produces 184 hp. and works in tandem with a 143 hp electric motor. and an electromechanical variator. The peak output of such a power plant is 226 hp. Choice of rear or all wheel drive. By the way, such a Crown has the most favorable half weight distribution along the axes, while in other modifications the front axle accounts for 52-53% of the mass.

At the top of the range is Crown with a new generation power plant (Multi Stage Hybrid System), which is used on the Lexus LS 500h sedan and coupe. It consists of an aspirated V6 3.5 (299 hp) operating on the Atkinson cycle, a 180-horsepower electric motor, a four-speed “automatic” without a torque converter and three planetary gears. The output is 359 "horses" and ten fixed transmission steps. Such Crowns will be offered only with rear-wheel drive.

The interior is designed according to the classical canons: a massive central tunnel, a fixed selector of the “machine”, traditional instruments. And the basic versions also have fabric seat upholstery. But in the center of the front panel there are two multi-format displays: the upper one is for multimedia and navigator, and the lower one is for controlling secondary functions of the car, including climate control. Although the block of "hot" keys and handles is saved below.

In expensive trim levels, the upholstery is leather, there are electric seats, a rear-view camera and many other options, and on the rear center armrest there is a separate control panel for the seats, microclimate and media system. The sedan will have the ITS Connect (Intelligent Transportation System), which is just on the current generation Crown and allows the car to communicate with other cars and street infrastructure. And there will also be a remote diagnostic system that sends all the data about the car to the service center.

The new generation Toyota Crown will enter the Japanese market at the end of June, the preliminary price range is from 42 to 65 thousand dollars. Although the sedan of the outgoing generation “in the base” costs 36 thousand. Alas, Toyota's export policy regarding the Crown has not changed: these cars will not be delivered to other countries. Unless in China they will start producing a local version, as happened with the car of the previous generation, but so far even this option has not been confirmed.

At the end of June, sales of the new 2018-2019 Toyota Crown sedan will start in the Japanese market. This is the fifteenth generation of the model, which saw the light, scary to think, back in 1955. The updated car with the S220 index will replace the 14th generation car (S210), which was produced for six years (2012-2018).

The base price of Toyota Crown 2018-2019 will be about 42 thousand dollars (2.6 million rubles), the upper cost bar will be set at about 65 thousand dollars (4 million rubles). The model will remain exclusively a product of domestic consumption, produced and sold only in its homeland - in Japan. The only export market where the new Crown may appear is China, but it is too early to talk about the prospects for localizing the assembly of the sedan there.

New platform and larger dimensions

The "fifteenth" Toyota Crown is built on a modern modular GA-L platform - one of the variations of the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) architecture. Many Toyota / Lexus models, including the latest generations, have already switched to this “cart”. Having changed the base, the already large car has increased in size. True, the increase occurred only in length (+15 mm) and wheelbase (+70 mm), which amounted to 4910 and 2920 mm, respectively. The Japanese left the width the same (1800 mm), and completely reduced the height by 40 mm (up to 1455 mm).

Together with the correction of body dimensions, Toyota engineers lowered the center of gravity of the car by 15 mm, while achieving an almost perfect weight distribution along the axes. For example, in a modification with a “younger” hybrid system, the distribution is generally reference - 50:50, in the other two versions it is close to that - 52:48 (gasoline version) and 53:47 (senior hybrid).

body design

The appearance of the 15th generation Toyota Crown serial sedan was declassified back in October 2017, when the concept of the same name was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show. He, as expected, was an almost exact copy of the car that stood on the conveyor. The new Crown has seriously changed compared to its predecessor, gaining a more stylish and dynamic body shape with a coupe-like silhouette and bright exterior decor elements.

The front of the model received new headlights with LEDs and an original grille that cuts deep into the bumper. The latter acquired a more aggressive and aerodynamically perfect look, having acquired a pronounced splitter and developed side sections with miniature round foglights.

In profile, the four-door, for all its solidity and respectability, now looks much more rapidly and recklessly. This perception is provided by a long hood, an elegant roof dome with a “shark fin” and an elongated rear window, an impressive, but not at all seeming overweight, feed. A distinctive feature of the new model will be the six-window layout of the side glazing with additional sections at the rear pillars.

Salon and equipment

The interior of the Toyota Crown, with all the abundance of innovations, has retained the classic configuration with a high central tunnel, comfortable first-row seats and spacious rear seats. However, the developers have thoroughly redrawn the console, according to the latest trends, placing two information screens on it at once. The upper one, sticking out above the panel, is responsible for multimedia and navigation, the lower trapezoidal shape is for the settings of the climate control system and seats. The instrument cluster remained true to the traditional scheme - well-read, round dials on the sides and a small on-board computer display in the center. The armrest between the front seats, although it looks as massive as before, has actually become 30 mm lower, which is done for the convenience of the driver.

The richest configurations of the updated sedan will delight you with the widest choice of equipment and high-quality finishes. In the presence of leather upholstery (in the initial versions, only the top of the front panel is covered with leather), electric adjustment and ventilation of the front seats, a rear-view camera, the latest security systems, the ITS Connect system for communication with other vehicles and road infrastructure. On the second row, a separate remote control is built into the armrest to control the media system, climate and chairs. Landing at the rear, by the way, has not changed much, although the increase in the distance between the axles, it would seem, made it possible to free up additional legroom. But Toyota engineers felt that it was more expedient to increase the margin of space in front of the driver by moving the front wheels away from him.
