Toyota Corolla 110 body specifications. Eighth generation Toyota Corolla

The release of the Toyota 110 corolla body began in May 1995. The design of the car has changed in almost everything, but many similarities with the previous model with the E100 index have been preserved. In 1998, some Corolla cars that were not sold in the Japanese market receive a new 1ZZ-FE engine. This engine was the first Toyota car engine to feature an aluminum cylinder block and cylinder heads, making the eighth generation much lighter than the E100 ancestor.

Toyota manufacturers decided to present a model with a unique design for each market. For example, in North America, where the start of sales was scheduled for mid-1997, the car receives a rear and front part different from the Australian and European versions. And in Pakistan, the model was produced until March 2003.

ATTENTION! Found a completely simple way to reduce fuel consumption! Don't believe? An auto mechanic with 15 years of experience also did not believe until he tried it. And now he saves 35,000 rubles a year on gasoline!

The eighth generation of the Toyota Corolla 110 corolla body was produced in Japan itself until mid-2000, back in 1997, the Corolla became the best-selling car in the world. Despite the fact that in spirit (not taking into account its appearance), the "hundredth" model did not offer customers any new technical solutions. If you use figurative comparisons, it turns out that she actually “rested on her laurels”, which she deserved in previous generations, whose roots go back to the 80s.

In fact, the Toyota Corolla 110 was developed on the platform of the previous model, and most of its units were the same gearboxes and engines, albeit slightly modernized, but still used in the E90 series cars. In terms of the technical level of equipment, too, no special progress has been made.

The reason for all this is the protracted recession, Toyota was forced to cut costs to the maximum and had to use already developed technical solutions. However, there was also a plus in this - most conservative buyers already knew that they were offered a time-tested, reliable and very practical car.

As a legacy from its predecessor, the 110 corolla receives the power frame of the entire body, on which new designer panels are simply hung. The concern decides to give its most popular model a very non-trivial look, decorating the front part with oval convex “big-eyed” headlights with round colored (instead of white, contrary to the fashion of the time) sidelights and a new trapezoidal mesh grille lining, which immediately highlighted 110 body toyota 110 corolla from a number of "classmates".

Toyota Corolla GT 15

The redesigned front bumper-spoiler and new taillights equipped with oval colorless “turn signals” look very interesting. Thanks to the new design of the side windows with a belt line rising slightly towards the tail section and the design of the rims, the sedan also becomes visible from the side.

The suspension of all wheels was left the same independent and only slightly modified. The model 110 body of the Toyota 110 Corolla was so liked by the European public that it almost immediately earned a new honorary title, in Europe the Corolla becomes the "Car of the Year".

What applies to Euro-Corolla type cars, which were produced specifically for the needs of the European market. Toyota Corolla, designed for the North American market, (unified with the Chevrolet Prizm brand) gets its own body design, more original than in the "European" version.

Therefore, it is not at all surprising that the toyota corolla 110 body is becoming a bestseller all over the world. As an option, many of the trim levels are actually completely identical to those offered in the “hundredth” Corolla model.

The interior of the model has also changed in the direction of the presence of smooth, round, oval shapes. In relation to this, the concern strictly adhered to the main principle - the unity of content and form: that is, if the headlights used oval, then the ventilation control knobs are made round, and not skids, as in previous generations. Although there is a comfortable driver's seat with three adjustments for the seat, the seat has good lateral support, but the algorithm for adjusting its cushion is not very convenient.

In addition, the familiar, adjustable steering column (in height), large and informative instrument scales, a rounded instrument panel, pleasant to look at, excellent clarity when shifting gears are the traditional features of the toyota corolla corolla 110 body, which are carefully transferred from one generation to another. Colored cloth inserts are made in the doors, which create additional comfort, however, interior trim with light beige plastic and door sills simply cannot be considered practical.

The reason for this was the protracted recession, when Toyota had to cut costs as much as possible and use already developed technical solutions. However, this turned out to be a huge plus - conservative buyers already knew that they were offered an essentially time-tested, very reliable and practical car. Against this background, it is not surprising that the Corolla has become a global bestseller. By name and option, many configurations almost completely coincided with those offered for the “hundredth” Corolla. In luxury trim levels, one could count on the presence of aluminum wheels, power accessories, an immobilizer, two airbags, and wood-like interior trim. A number of small changes in the cabin contributed to greater convenience: a driver's seat with good lateral support, a more informative instrument panel, in some versions, "twists" instead of "sliders" to control ventilation.

For the first time, original body design solutions were offered for different markets, especially its front and rear. However, in the domestic market, the car had a somewhat conservative look, echoing the previous generation. In Japan, four different engines were installed on the Toyota Corolla sedan. These are petrol 4E-FE, 5A-FE, 4A-FE and diesel 2C-III. The 1.6 GT version was equipped with a twenty-valve 4A-GE engine with a power of 165 hp, however, only in a configuration with an automatic transmission. In general, as far as the transmission is concerned, either a 5-speed manual or a 3- or 4-speed "automatic" was offered. Particular attention is paid to environmental friendliness: fuel consumption and the amount of harmful emissions have decreased.

The suspension scheme remained the same - MacPherson struts at the front and semi-independent suspension with shock absorbers at the rear. The behavior of the car on the road has also practically not changed: it demonstrates quite acceptable stability and reliable handling. The dynamics may disappoint some, but do not forget that this is a classic compact family sedan. In the domestic market, some models with a 4A-FE gasoline engine and a 2C-III diesel engine were equipped with all-wheel drive (4WD FULLTIME).

In terms of passive safety, the car demonstrates good preparation and is equipped with a high-strength interior, two airbags, belt pretensioners. Good results were confirmed by the NASVA (Japan) crash test in 1995. And according to the results of tests by EuroNCAP, which set stricter requirements for new cars starting in October 1998, Corolla showed a satisfactory result, falling into the category of "three-star" cars, only slightly falling short of four stars.

Of course, the Toyota Corolla of the E 110 family cannot boast of the frills of the exterior design or interior. This is, first of all, a solid and strong car, during the creation of which reliability and durability were put at the forefront. The high prevalence of the brand, the relative simplicity and reliability of units and designs, the availability of spare parts, the possibility of repair in any workshop - all these are undeniable pluses. Even well-used cars of this family have high liquidity in the secondary market.

The new C-Class models from Toyota and Skoda clearly illustrate the difference between Eastern and Western approaches to mass-produced vehicle design. Which method is better for Russia?

The paradox is that many consumers want to drive fast European cars, but, in my opinion, amorphous, obsolete, but reliable “Japanese” are still better suited for our roads. On this basis, fierce battles between Westerners and Japanophiles have been going on in the virtual environment for many years, and there are no chances for a truce here.

The highlight of success. Toyota Corolla

Toyota Corolla, produced since 1966, has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Sounds like a consumer's dream. The current - already the tenth - generation of the model is represented only by a sedan. The hatchback now has its own name - Auris.

Toyota Corolla, produced since 1966, has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Sounds like a consumer's dream...

The current - already the tenth - generation of the model is represented only by a sedan. The hatchback now has its own name - Auris.

Today, when buying a car, seven out of ten customers choose different shades of gray. So the test car turned out to be like this - silver metallic. This color suits her. I am sure that the lion's share of the Corollas sold will turn out to be precisely "metal gray". See what color Camry is passing by? Solid silver metallic or black. And the Land Cruiser? What about the Yaris? And all, in my opinion, because when describing the features of most Toyota models, it is difficult to do without the word “average”. It's about design, handling, driving experience. Perhaps, only in terms of quality and reliability, Toyota is far from being average, and the minimum number of requests from owners to service stations is proof of this. I am convinced that the new Corolla will be as flawlessly reliable as the previous ones.

Corolla is a Camry in miniature. The fruits of Toyota's design work have never been particularly fancy. But the latest Camry turned out to be pretty, and the company reasonably decided not to look for the best of the good. They acted like in the movie - "darling, I reduced the children." Body proportions are very close. True, Corolla does not look so dynamic, because it is shorter in itself, but the resemblance to the older sister is visible everywhere. Look, for example, at the headlights, grille, window sill line. In general, the operation of one design theme in different models is the norm for the modern automotive industry.

Corolla has grown in size (by 360 mm in length and 50 in width), it looks more solid - the language no longer dares to call it a golf class and, in general, is much nicer than previous versions. But again, it's mediocrity. Everything is smooth, clean, correct, it will even seem beautiful to someone, but there is no “sex” (in the meaning of “sex” - “zest”). The gaze does not cling to anything, but, on the other hand, nothing upsets it. Probably, this should be the appearance of a best-selling car.

Inside, the same story. Pretty simple, no pretentious interior in gray tones made of “medium” plastic, with “aluminum look” inserts in the center, but assembled very soundly. Of course, it does not reach the "Europe", but it will completely satisfy the average buyer. Classic "Toyota" interior. All controls are conveniently located, you don’t need to get used to anything, but the efforts on them are not entirely natural. True, the beautiful volume knob of the radio is spinning with amazing nobility.

It is not immediately possible to take a comfortable position behind a three-spoke steering wheel with computer and audio control buttons. There are enough adjustments, but the seat cushion will surely seem short to a tall driver (it will be comfortable to sit behind him). The front seats themselves did not like - bulging back, frail lateral support. Meanwhile, the Corolla is able to drive quite decently. The new 1.6-liter Dual VVT-I engine paired with a 5-speed advanced MultiMode robot provides the car with acceleration at the level of the best classmates. The adaptive gearbox works noticeably better than, for example, on the Yaris, but still shifts up quite slowly, forcing the rider to nod his head in time with the shifts. However, by understanding the logic of the mechanism, you can achieve smooth movement. The situation is better in sports or manual (through convenient steering column “petals”) mode. With a kickdown, the box quickly drops down a few steps, with a re-gas, but pauses when shifting to higher gears are still noticeable.

Ride is very good for a car of this class. The suspension readily works out road bumps, almost without disturbing passengers. Even speed bumps are not a problem for her. But in corners, you have to pay for this with tangible (but not critical) rolls. There is feedback on the steering wheel, but you can’t call it transparent. The force is the same synthetic as on other controls. But on the straight line, Toyota stands confidently, it is comfortable and quiet even at a speed of 160-170 km / h. But I don’t want to drive a Corolla, the element of this car is calm movement.

The feeling of calmness and reliability during a measured ride - most likely, this is why Corolla is so loved. The light sensor will turn on the headlights when it gets dark, the rain sensor will turn on the “wipers” if it rains, the climate control will helpfully maintain the desired temperature, the “music” will increase the volume level with increasing speed, the “robot” will tuck in the right gear ... Maybe this is , according to Toyota, the same dream from the corporate slogan? Then $20,000 for a car is not that much...

challenger. Toyota Corolla T Sport

Toyota Corolla in the T Sport version is positioned by the manufacturer as an opponent of the Honda Civic Type R, Volkswagen Golf GTi, Seat Ibiza Cupra. These are small, factory-tuned economy cars, all part of the small club of hot hatchbacks.

Does the Corolla T Sport have a chance to take a worthy place among them? A small preface. Toyota vehicles have long been renowned for their quality and reliability. But until recently, they were distinguished by a rather boring appearance. That, however, did not prevent them from selling very well. Take the Corolla model. Nearly a million cars are sold every year, of which about 40% in the USA, 27% in Japan ... and only 16% in Europe

Why are Europeans capricious? Yes, because quality and reliability are not enough for them - give design. The Japanese have finally gotten around to it. We invested a lot of money in the creation of European style centers, hired local designers. And things went on - Yaris, RAV 4, new Camry and Land Cruiser, Celica ... Now here is the Corolla ...

Toyota's previous attempt to conquer Europe with the "big-eyed" eighth generation Corolla, I must say, failed. Headlights a la Mercedes did not save the situation, the car remained a simple city workhorse: absolutely reliable, unpretentious - and frankly boring. And they bought it badly. The ninth generation of the model, which debuted at the end of 2001, brings noticeable changes. No, nothing particularly striking in the design has appeared, but the appearance of the car has become more European.

The car is produced with a full set of bodies - two hatchbacks (Great Britain), a sedan (Turkey), a mini-van and a station wagon (Japan). For our test, we took a five-door hatchback in the T Sport version, which claims a place in the hot hatchback class. After the Celica and Yaris, this is the company's third model with the corresponding nameplate on the grille.

It was Boris Shulmeister, a racer, master of sports, who had to evaluate the applicant's merits. Why does it need to be emphasized? Yes, because he has his own approach to the car, purely sporty. And this car for Schulmeister is not just a version of Corolla, but a car with sporting ambitions. It was called T Sport - if you please, correspond. So let's go...

"European appearance" Corolla - does not mean characteristic. You can't recognize a car without a branded emblem. It has features of both the Skoda Fabia and the Peugeot 307, and if you look from the side or rear, you can easily mistake the new Corolla for the grown five-door Audi A3. Unless in the face the car does not look like any other, but this dissimilarity does not at all give it individuality - the Corolla does not stand out at all in the stream.

Oddly enough, outwardly the "sports" version is almost the same as the standard one - no spoilers, aerodynamic body kits or rear wings. Only the fine-mesh radiator grille, the aforementioned T Sport nameplate on it, and the red color of the Toyota lettering on the tailgate give it away.

Inside, the car looks just as spineless as it does outside - even the leather interior, the pseudo-aluminum trim of the center console, the gearshift lever with a polished “chrome-like” insert and instrument dials with red illumination do not save things. There is no feeling of closeness to something more or less sporty - a completely standard car.

To accommodate passengers more comfortably and according to the latest fashion, the new Corolla has a heavily raised roof. Landing is much more vertical than on its predecessor, but the space is not particularly increased. If a tall person sits in the front seat, and the same one takes a place behind him, both will not be very comfortable. The front seats are raised very high, and this exacerbates the feeling of "high chair" landing. When the RAV 4 stopped at the traffic light next to me, I was surprised to find that my head was level with the head of the Rafik driver. Maybe it is convenient for a woman of short stature to view the road from such a height, but this does not fit in with my ideas about landing in a “fast” car. And that non-retractable armrest between the front seats...

The ergonomics of the workplace, however, is quite decent, the quality of the finishing materials is also on the level. On the driver's door under the left hand is the control unit for power windows and central locking. The steering wheel of a classic diameter and a thickness that is quite pleasant for the hands is equipped with audio control keys. A pair of steering column switches are responsible for controlling the lights and wipers. The mirror control joystick is located on the dashboard, to the left of the steering wheel. And finally, the main pride of the Corolla is the instrument panel, equipped with the Optitron system borrowed from Lexus. When the ignition is turned on, the instrument arrows first “light up”, and then simultaneously the scales of the tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge and hand brake indicator. According to manufacturers, the red backlight provides a clearer perception and makes it easier to read important technical parameters. On the heater console there is a control panel for the audio system and the air conditioning system. The gearshift lever with large, in my opinion, moves is in its proper place.

The car is equipped with a 1.8-liter engine with a capacity of 192 hp. and a moment of 180 Nm. The same is installed on the sports Celica. Maximum power is reached at 7800 rpm, maximum torque at 6800 rpm. Acceleration to hundreds takes 8.4 seconds, top speed - 225 km / h. Fuel, however, is consumed very economically - 8.3 liters per 100 km with a mixed driving cycle. Here, it seems to me, is the reason for the dynamic performance of the Corolla T Sport. The car must be made either fast, or economical and environmentally friendly - at the same time it does not work.

There are six steps in the Corolla gearbox, but all gear ratios are so high that there is no need to talk about decent dynamics. When accelerating with the accelerator pedal to the floor, sequential gear changes cause the engine to exit VVTL-i mode. This is a system similar to Honda's i-VTEC: it allows you to change the valve timing - lift height and valve opening time, squeezing the maximum possible out of the engine. But the two-liter Civic Type R engine is confidently lucky already from a thousand revolutions, with pickup after three thousand and delightful acceleration from six to eight. The engine of the Corolla T Sport is a completely different matter. Some kind of "two-stage". In behavior, this naturally aspirated engine is very similar to a turbocharged engine. Up to 6000 rpm, the car accelerates sluggishly, then there is a sharp pickup, lasting up to 8000 rpm, and when switching to the highest gear, the engine falls out of the “turbo zone”, and you have to wait for some time when the tachometer needle crawls into it ...

Manageability, I'm sorry, I did not like it. It seems that the Japanese focused on tuning the engine, but there was not enough time or money for the suspension. The manufacturer claims that the T Sport suspension has been modified, but the car behaves completely unsportsmanlike. In corners, the tall car rolls threateningly, and at speeds above 120 km / h it became frankly scary (I would recommend a speed limit of 80 km / h to an unprepared driver). At high speed, hitting bumps, the car starts to make lateral jumps - so strong that you want to immediately stop and transfer to the subway. The only hope for a happy ending to the trip is the unmistakable operation of the TRC traction control system and the VSC exchange rate stability system.

The braking system inspires respect. The Corolla T Sport is equipped with brake discs of such a diameter that 15-inch wheels simply will not fit. The anti-lock braking system, together with the EBD electronic brake force distribution on the wheels and the BA emergency brake booster, do an excellent job. No unnecessary actuations and vibrations on the pedals - only confident controlled deceleration. What's great is great...

It seems to me that Toyota hastened with the release of the Corolla T Sport. The opportunity to compete in the sector of inexpensive, fast and compact cars could well be given to the Celica models for the time being (how, after all, is the “three-door coupe”, as the company calls the car, fundamentally different from the three-door hatchback?), and in the meantime bring the Corolla T Sport to mind. Now this is not a cheap (at a price of $ 27,000) family hatchback, and not a charged street fighter - not two, not one and a half. In any case, it is definitely not able to compete with the Honda Civic Type R.

Entering the domestic market in 1995 and the world market in 1997 coincided with the beginning of a severe crisis for the Japanese automaker, as a result of which this modification received only a new design, which is well reflected in the photo, as well as the size and designation of the E110 body. The technical characteristics and all the power units that the first modification of the Corolla 110 possessed were inherited from the previous generation, Toyota engineers only slightly upgraded them.

Technical data of the first modification of the eighth generation

The recession that the Japanese automaker fell into did not allow the company to carry out a complete update of the technical equipment of the VIII generation Toyota Corolla, limiting itself to a slight modernization of proven and well-proven power units from the previous car model.

The line of power units, which was equipped with the first modifications of the Toyota Corolla E110, consisted of three gasoline engines and one diesel engine, the manufacturer slightly changed their settings for more economical fuel consumption, after which they received the following indicators:

  • 1.3-liter inline four 4E - FE with 4 valves for each of the cylinders, the power of which was equal to 88 or 65 kW in horses, issued at 5600 crankshaft revolutions with a torque of 116 Nm at 4600 engine speeds;
  • 1.5-liter in-line engine 5A - FE with 4 valves per cylinder, whose power in horses was exactly 100 or 74 kW, issued at 5600 crankshaft revolutions with a torque of 137 Nm at 4400 engine speeds;
  • 1.6-liter four in a row 4A - FE with 4 valves for each of the cylinders, the power of which in horses was equal to 115 or 85 kW, issued at 6000 engine speeds and a torque of 147 Nm at engine speeds of 4800;
  • a 2-liter diesel engine of the 2C-III series, whose power was 73 horses or 54 kW at 4700 crankshaft revolutions, with a maximum torque of 129 Nm obtained at 2800 revolutions.

The working pair of each of the engines was either a manual box with five steps, or two versions of an automatic one, which has a three- and four-speed mode of operation. The suspension in the Toyota Corolla VIII generation in the 110th body was made according to the standard MacPherson strut system in front and longitudinal and transverse levers in the rear, where the transverse stabilizer was responsible for directional stability.

In the standard optional equipment, this car had front axle drive, and all-wheel drive modifications were available in trim levels with 1.6-liter gasoline and diesel engines with automatic transmission. The configuration options themselves in the VIII generation Toyota Corolla received a letter designation: DX, LX, SE and XE, which differ in the number of additional options inside the car.

Exterior and weight and size dimensions of the E110 body

Launching the VIII generation Toyota Corolla on the market, the manufacturer took into account the specific features and different preferences of motorists in the American, Asian and European markets, resulting in a different design of the front and rear of this car.

The body of the Toyota Corolla type VIII E110 was placed on the platform of the previous car and was produced in sedan, hatchback with 3 or 5 doors and station wagon. The manufacturer completely changed the design of the details of the appearance of the model 110 body, which was noticeably different from previous modifications of the E100 car, as a result of which the car received the following weight and size indicators:

  • 4295 mm was the length of the Toyota Corolla type VIII E110 sedan, 4270 mm was the 5-door hatchback, 4100 mm was the 3-door hatchback and 4320 was the length of the station wagon;
  • 1690 mm reached the width of the Corolla 110, sedan, 3 and 5-door hatchback and station wagon;
  • 1385 mm was the height of the Toyota Corolla type VIII E110 in all body versions, except for the station wagon, which has a height of 1445 mm;
  • 2465 mm was the size of the wheelbase in all body versions;
  • 150 mm was the clearance of the car.

The car was delivered to the European market with round head optics, and for American and Asian motorists, the shape of the optics took on the form of an elongated rectangle. In 1997, the Japanese automaker carried out a restyling of this model, which brought changes to the line of power units and interior design, which led to record sales of a passenger car in the history of Toyota.

Description of the restyled version of the 1997 model year

One of the main differences of the restyled version of the Corolla was the new engine under the designation 1ZZ-FE, which has an aluminum crankcase and working volumes of 1.3 and 1.6 liters, which were equipped exclusively with European versions of the car.

The updated range of engines for the European version of the car had one of the best operational reliability indicators, which was noted by numerous reviews of the 1997 Toyota Corolla from various specialists, also noting high fuel economy rates.

In the interior of the car, the front row seats have changed, having received improved lateral support and a higher landing, so that visibility from the passenger compartment has become much better. There were no other significant changes in the updated car, the automaker did not improve the various systems and components that work flawlessly in this modification.

Conclusion

Thanks to a competent approach to launching the eighth generation Toyota Corolla E 110 on the world market, the automaker managed to raise the already high consumer demand for the car, which was achieved by taking into account all the specific requirements of motorists from different countries, while using previously developed technologies.

The eighth generation Toyota Corolla was introduced in May 1995. The novelty had a common platform with the previous generation, and some modifications even had common body elements. Technically, the Corollas have not changed: the engines have retained the power system (injection or carburetor), the gearboxes have not changed (AKP-3, AKP-4;

MKP-5, MKP-6), the suspension of all wheels remained independent.
If before the Corolla was very different in appearance depending on the sales market, now the Japanese have relied on the European appearance, trying to make the Corolla similar to each other for all markets. In 1997, cars for the interior were restyled, getting a more European exterior and interior. In the same 97, the eighth generation Corolla began to be sold in the Old World, receiving the title of "Best Car of the Year in Europe" that same year. 1997 was also notable for the fact that for the first time Corolla took part in the World Rally Championship (WRC). The Corolla WRC rally car was built on the basis of a 3-door Compact hatchback, equipped with a 3S-GTE engine and an all-wheel drive transmission from the Toyota Celica GT-Four. Toyota's first victory was brought by Carlos Sainz in 1998, and in 1999 Toyota won the Constructors' Championship. Among civilian modifications, sedans and station wagons for Japan and America could boast of all-wheel drive. In 1999, a restyling of models for all markets was carried out, the main trends of which were the rejection of two round headlights in favor of four round ones, but in a single block headlight, as well as a new series of ZZ-FE engines with a phase change system
gas distribution VVT-i. In the USA, the 1ZZ-FE engine (which has found popularity especially on the Toyota Avensis) has been installed since the beginning of sales of the eighth generation in North America (since 1997). In 2001, the ninth generation Corolla was introduced. The eighth generation models were discontinued in March 2002
of the year.
