Should I buy a used Nissan Patrol Y61 series? Options and prices.

21.09.2019

The Nissan Patrol Y61 series has been produced since 1997 for thirteen years. The most powerful frame, dependent suspensions with bridge beams, a two-stage transfer case with manual control ... The classic design, worked out on the predecessor of the Y60 series: there was almost no talk of childhood illnesses. What about old people?

They say that in the silence you can hear how rust wears away metal in older cars. This is about Patrol: it’s not without reason that Nissan’s proprietary warranty against through-corrosion for it was halved - up to six years. On cars of the first years of production, corrosion is most easily detected under the lining on the wings, sills, rear wheel arch pockets, and also on the bottom of the body. It is better to cover the license plate on the frame with anticorrosive: it rusts. And if the hood literally starts to open with a creak, do not be too lazy to remove the body panel in front of the windshield and lubricate the hinges - having turned sour tightly, they will eventually fall apart.

"Flowering" elements of chrome trim often changed during the warranty period. Dampness also affects the electrics - the telescopic antenna with an electric drive ($ 300) and the motors of the headlight brush cleaners ($ 180) turn sour on cars older than 2002, the connectors of the wiring openly laid under the bottom rot ...

On Russian roads, Patrols with a gasoline engine are rare (less than 8% of cars), but not at all because of problems with reliability. Cars with the “six” TB45 (4.5 l, 200 hp) were not officially sold with us (almost all of them are from the Middle East), and the engine itself is rather weak for an SUV weighing under 2.5 tons. Since 2004, cars with a TB48 engine (4.8 l, 245 hp) could be bought new from dealers, and they had enough power, but few people were satisfied with gasoline consumption of more than 30 liters per 100 km.

Among the "Europeans" there are simple versions with a fabric interior, without climate control, with unpainted wheel arch linings and on steel wheels, as well as short three-doors with a base of 2400 mm versus 2970 mm for the five-door version

Therefore, in Russia, most of the cars (up to 70%) are with a three-liter turbodiesel “four” ZD30DDTI of the 1999 model. In the gas distribution mechanism, it has a strong and durable chain, a fuel pump ($ 5,000) and nozzles ($ 200 each) usually withstand 200 thousand kilometers, and the state of the turbocharger ($ 2,000) needs to be looked at more closely only after 150 thousand kilometers. But fuel equipment often has problems with control electronics, and not every workshop will undertake the repair of a worn rotary injection pump. For cars older than 2006, the mass air flow sensor is weak (when it fails, the car loses power), and after 60-80 thousand kilometers you have to change the attachment drive belt tensioner with a damper ($ 250). From temperature changes in severe frosts, the mating plane of the exhaust manifold often warps, which, however, can usually be restored.

Much worse is that after 150 thousand kilometers, cracks may appear in the light-alloy cylinder head! A new head ($ 2200) will also have to be legalized by the traffic police: for some reason, the engine number is stamped on it. In many engines of the first years of production, due to miscalculations in the design of the piston lubrication and cooling system (special nozzles supply oil to the piston bottoms), even with a slight decrease in oil pressure or malfunctions in the fuel equipment, the pistons burned out. So the engine replaced under warranty for cars older than 2001 is a big fat plus when buying. Just keep in mind that even with modified engines, the risk of piston burnout still remains - the problem was almost completely overcome only after the next modernization in 2005.

The legendary TD42T turbodiesel with a volume of 4.2 liters is a pity, it is easier to meet it in pictures than in life

The most common (and most problematic) Patrol engine is the three-liter turbo diesel ZD30DDTI

In the early years of production, the Nissan Patrol Y61 was equipped with a 2.8-liter six-cylinder long-liver RD28T, which first appeared 30 years ago on 160-series cars and was only supplemented by an electronically controlled high-pressure fuel pump. A 128-horsepower engine pushed to its limits is prone to overheating, and its long aluminum head ($1,300) is prone to warping and cracking. Otherwise, apart from trifles like a clogged exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve, a malfunctioning electronic fuel pressure regulator and crankshaft oil seals and oil pump and oil cooler gaskets flowing after 150 thousand kilometers, everything is not bad. The fuel pump ($5000) usually lasts at least 250-300 thousand kilometers, and then it can be sorted out without problems ($1000-1400). The turbocharging unit ($ 1200) can withstand at least 200 thousand kilometers, and for neat owners who change air filters and high-quality oil on time, all 350-400 thousand kilometers. Do not forget only that in the timing drive there is a belt, which, for fidelity, is better to change every 60-80 thousand kilometers: the consequences of its breakage are very deplorable.

But the in-line “six” TD42 with a volume of 4.2 liters has neither a belt nor even a chain: instead of them, there is a gear drive, the existence of which for many years you can not guess. Oh, this motor, which has been in production since the 80s, is legendary! They say it's easier to sell a car with him than to torture him. The engine effortlessly overcomes the bar of half a million kilometers, and on Patrols its supercharged version TD42T often lives to a ripe old age with a “native” turbocharger. Only the 1HZ series engines on Toyota Land Cruiser cars can boast of such endurance (AR No. 1, 2010). It’s a pity that finding a Patrol with a “six” TD42 in the secondary market is incredible luck. Officially, they were not sold with us, and rare copies with left-hand drive are the former “Arabs” that are very weakly resisting corrosion.

In the transmission - no frills: a primitive "part-time" (forcibly connected front axle) without a center differential in the transfer case. The front end can only be connected at low speeds and on slippery surfaces - otherwise the extended chain in the transfer case ($ 450) will go first.

Patrol was delivered to us only in a five-door version and in rich trim levels. The leather of the seats is rough, but it is durable and resistant to abrasion.

In addition, the front hubs are connected by semi-automatic clutches (each costs $650), and on heavy off-road, the Auto mode is not enough for this - they will have to be brought to the Lock position manually using a wheelbrace. An entertaining exercise in the middle of a dirt road for the owner of an expensive SUV! But there is nothing to do - otherwise, a crunch in the hubs, portending unforeseen expenses, will appear after 80-90 thousand kilometers. And so that Patrol does not become rear-wheel drive forever due to jammed couplings, during each MOT they need to change the lubricant. By the way, you will have to lubricate both the steering knuckles of the front axle and the slots of the cardan shafts equipped with grease fittings. Then the cardan shafts themselves ($1,500) will last more than 200 thousand kilometers - and will not pull the bearings of the gearbox tails with them.

But the main gears are very difficult to finish off. But do not forget to use the rear axle lock at least from time to time - otherwise the control electrovalves of its pneumatic actuator located under the hood will turn sour from inaction.

Before storming the off-road, the front hub couplings have to be turned on with a balloon key (they are blocked in the photo), and to turn them off completely, you need to drive a couple of meters in reverse

The resource of mechanical gearboxes is directly proportional to the engine size, except that the clutch ($ 400-500) serves the same for everyone - up to 150-170 thousand kilometers. At the “weakest” box paired with the RD28T engine, the gears begin to fly out, and the synchronizers crunch after 200-250 thousand kilometers. It has to be sorted out after 300 thousand kilometers ($ 800-1200). The “mechanics” of cars with a three-liter diesel engine are even more durable, and it seems that the masters do not even know what the manual transmission repair of Patrols with a 4.2TD engine is.

And the lifespan of automatic transmissions (they were combined with any of the diesel engines and, by default, with gasoline engines) directly depends on the operation: they usually do not require repair ($ 1500-2000) before 300 thousand kilometers, but a couple of "trophy-raid" trips easily can sentence them to immediate repairs, and to the maximum - usually you have to change burnt clutches.

An antenna on the front fender that has not lost its mobility is a rarity for Patrols older than three to five years.

Folding seats suspended along the sides allow you to take two more people on board, but significantly reduce the volume of the trunk, and over time they begin to creak with loose fasteners

Suspension? That's right - there is nothing to break there. But there is one thing - a switchable rear anti-roll bar. It seems that this device was invented by marketers, not engineers: the rear suspension travel of the Patrol is already huge, and even if there is a rear differential lock ... In a word, there is no sense from the device, but the mouth is full of trouble. Now the hinge on the left telescopic rack ($1000) will break, then the electric drive ($850) will go on strike. After off-road exercises, the delicate mechanism must be cleaned of dirt and dampness. It is no wonder that after the first breakdown, many owners prefer to install a regular rack ($ 45), or even completely remove the stabilizer, putting up with a barely noticeable increase in roll in corners - they say, not a racing car.

The rest - no surprises. Simple racks and bushings of stabilizers are enough for 40-70 thousand kilometers, but along with them, fans of off-road sorties have to change the stabilizer itself ($ 250) - its rod is rubbed under the bushings. Off-roading halves the life of shock absorbers ($150 front and $100 rear) - they usually go 130-160 thousand kilometers. Pivot bearings suffer ($60 each), and frequent replacement of suspension springs ($220-260) due to broken bumpers is unknown to those who do not move off the asphalt.

A common thing on Japanese cars - chrome finishes are not strong enough to withstand our road chemicals.

Silent blocks ($20-30 each) usually wear out by 100-120 thousand kilometers, and they do it very quietly and imperceptibly: in order not to find broken places where they are pressed into the levers (only Panhard rods, $180-200 are supplied assembled), do not be lazy check the condition of the rubber bands from time to time. With the same mileage, steering tips ($90 each) and traction ($200-250) can give up, but a leak from a worm-type steering gear ($350 per bulkhead) happens only after 250-300 thousand kilometers.

In a word, in terms of indestructibility and reliability, the Nissan Patrol may well compete with a model named Toyota Land Cruiser. That's just the "correct" diesel engine TD42 in our day with fire you will not find. And the rest of the engines are either problematic or voracious ... But Patrol at the age of four or five years is estimated at from 1 million 100 thousand to 1 million 600 thousand rubles, and it is not difficult to find a completely “live” twelve-year-old car for half a million. For comparison: Land Cruiser 100 at the same venerable age costs 200 thousand rubles more, and the difference in the price of fresher copies reaches 700 thousand rubles.

The appearance of rust in the place under the VIN number on the frame side member is facilitated by dirt flying from under the right front wheel

No wonder the taillight wiring connector suffers from corrosion

To change the sliding rear stabilizer bar (pictured) to a regular one, you will have to modify the platform for its attachment to the frame

The drum parking brake is located on the transfer case - driving with a tightened handbrake, in addition to wear of the pads, leads to overheating and destruction of the transfer case seal

To lubricate the hood hinges, you will have to remove the panel under the windshield.

The handle of a manual gearbox "looses" after 100 thousand kilometers, but the "mechanics" itself is very durable

From hard off-road driving, the steering damper bends or tears off the “ear” from the Panhard rod

There is a lot of empty space under the huge cover that “eats” part of the wheel arch lining - in the Arabic versions, the neck of an additional fuel tank with a capacity of 40 liters is also displayed here

Experts Autoreview about the car Nissan Patrol (AR №17, 2000)

Nissan captivates with space: to get to the opposite door, you have to be a basketball player! Gears here have to be shifted like on a truck, since the handle is located a little further from the driver and a little higher than we would like. And the “razdatka” control lever, on the contrary, is closer to the driver.

The three-liter Nissan turbodiesel is not bad. But why is there such a "short" transmission? The motor instantly spins up to a maximum of 4000 rpm, which corresponds to 32 km/h in first gear and 56 km/h in second. As a result, in city driving, you have to constantly wield the gear lever, which, moreover, is characterized by large lateral movements. But fifth gear is great for dynamic overtaking on the highway - Patrol actively responds to pressing the gas pedal in the range from 120 to 140 km / h. And on long straights, the speedometer needle approaches 170! But ... Nissan's speedometer deceives the driver with rare cynicism, overestimating the maximum speed by almost 20 km / h.

Without changing much technically, Patrol experienced a restyling of the exterior and interior twice - in 2003 and 2006. In the photo - the car in its original form of the sample of 1997

In the Nissan clutch drive, we found a vacuum booster similar to those used in brake systems. Thanks to him, the effort on the pedals was halved. But, alas, information content has suffered significantly.

Patrol is equipped with a fairly stiff suspension. Therefore, despite the non-sharp steering, the reactions to turning the steering wheel are clearer and faster here, and the rolls are less than those of the Prado and Pajero. But on rough roads, the hard Patrol constantly shakes, which makes the car track the trajectory worse in the turn. Spoils the picture and the lack of reactive action on the steering wheel.

And I completely upset the Patrol with a smooth ride. It reacts just as harshly as Discovery to large irregularities, but in addition decently shakes passengers on “little things”.

Owner's opinion

Dormov Aleksey, 26 years old, Moscow, employee of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia

I have been operating Nissan Patrol for the sixth year already - and even visited the Moscow-Magadan-Moscow expedition. Then in a month he covered 21 thousand kilometers, a third of which fell on dirt roads. And all the troubles - the front springs that burst into three parts, because of which I drove for two thousand kilometers with the bridge lying on the bumpers, and with each oil change after 7500 km I had to tighten the front wheel bearings.

In the snowy winters near Moscow, convenient towing eyes come in handy - in the mornings I had to go to friends stuck at their own houses more than once, saving half the yard along the way. And in cold weather it’s good in Patrol: with two standard “stoves”, their fans do not need to be turned on at high speeds. The suspension is amazing: I never slow down in front of pits, and silent blocks go up to 100 thousand kilometers.

As my experience and those of my friends have shown, services are willing to take on the repair of the Patrol, only many do it illiterately. For example, after fords and mud baths, it is imperative to check the presence of water in the steering knuckles, wheel and pivot bearings, and axles. The steering knuckle seals often need to be changed, and during assembly, the preload in the bearings must be adjusted with gaskets. The operation takes about eight hours, and if everything was done much faster for you, then most likely they cheated.

It’s even worse with engine maintenance: on the ZD30, few of the “unofficials” know how to check the thermal clearance in the valves, although the operation is simple, requiring only shims. And for the TD42 motor, many parts have to wait up to a month - since it is the least problematic of all motors.

And Patrol is also good because a lot can be repaired by yourself and even in the field - even the clutch changes without a pit. By the way, when not the first replacement, do not forget to carefully inspect the surface of the flywheel - it is covered with cracks (they can be sanded, but it is better to replace the flywheel), and in addition to the clutch kit, immediately change the sealing covers and springs of the release bearing and fork. But if the crankshaft oil seal does not flow, it is better not to touch it.

By the way, from experience, it is better to put original spare parts on Patrol, especially oil seals. Yes, they are a little more expensive, but you can forget about the next repair for a long time.

The history of the well-known brand of the popular Nissan Patrol SUV begins in the mid-50s, the first Japanese jeep with this name was introduced to the world back in September 1951.

For the entire period of production, a concern from Japan created six generations of cars of this brand, and Nissan Patrol 5 has truly become a bestseller in the SUV class.

A bit of history

Each car model produced in its original body is assigned an index, the fifth generation of a full-size SUV received the abbreviation Y61.

For the first time this model appeared in public at the very end of 1997, it was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Although the car in this body began to be produced a long time ago, it was sold for the market of some Asian countries for a long time, the Nissan Patrol Y61 was produced until 2013 in parallel with the car of the last, sixth generation.

Its characteristic features are a dependent suspension, a frame body structure and a transfer case with a demultiplier; a car with such design features is no longer common in our time.

Initially, the assembly of the model was carried out in Japan, but in 2000 it was discontinued.

In 1998, the production of the car was launched in Spain, and in 1999 in the Philippines, then Nissan Patrol began to be produced in South Africa and Pakistan.

In 2004, the "off-road conqueror" was restyled, according to tradition, the changes primarily affected the exterior, and the car was modernized:

  • both bumpers;
  • rear lights;
  • head optics;
  • radiator grille.

There have also been some changes in the model range of power units, the Japanese all-terrain vehicle received a new 4.8-liter gasoline engine.

The main production of the Nissan Patrol 5 was discontinued in 2010, and cars were imported to Russia from the United Arab Emirates, assembly was carried out until the end of 2012.

Appearance and body types

The bodies of all Patrol cars of early releases had angular rectangular shapes, and only in the form of the 5th generation car did some rounding appear.

But the off-road vehicle, originally intended for the Armed Forces, still retained an army bearing early on, and from its stern appearance one can guess that it is not afraid of swamp slurry and snow-covered country roads.

The impressive dimensions of the Japanese "rogue" also deserve respect, its length in the 5-door version is 5080 mm. There are no large overhangs on the body of the car, so the all-terrain vehicle can easily overcome very steep descents and ascents, ford water obstacles up to 0.7 m deep.

Wide plastic moldings are installed along the bottoms of the doors, and the wheel arches are protected from dirt flying from the road with plastic decorative overlays.

Also, the automobile company Nissan produced the Patrol with a short base in a 3-door version, the length of the short-wheelbase car was 4395 mm.

There are several different types of Y61 bodies, these are:

  • Van (cargo-passenger version);
  • four- and two-door Pickup;
  • Station Wagon (wagon type body);
  • Hardtop (car with a removable hard top).

The solidity in the appearance of the car is combined with the reliability of the model, even if the design of the SUV is not refined, but this “tank” will not let you down on the road.

Nissan Patrol configuration

For Russia, the Arab-assembled Patrol Y61 comes in two basic trim levels: Elegance and Luxury, with a manual or automatic transmission, a 3.0 diesel engine or a 4.5-liter gasoline engine (4.8 liters after restyling).

In all variants, only all-wheel drive is provided; Luxury equipment includes:

  • central locking;
  • braking assistance system;
  • power windows,
  • fog lights integrated into the front bumper;
  • electric mirrors.
  • air conditioning in the cabin;
  • CD changer;
  • power front seats.

A design feature of the Nissan Patrol is a rear stabilizer bar that can be switched off to improve the vehicle's off-road performance.

In the Elegance configuration, the car looks more solid, in addition to those listed, it has additional options:

  • electric sunroof;
  • leather seats and steering wheel;
  • electric driver's seat;
  • xenon;
  • salon inserts under a tree;
  • Cruise control;
  • subwoofer.

In all variants, four airbags are installed on the Patrol Y61: front passenger and driver, two side airbags.

Nissan Patrol engines

Although only three types of engines are presented for the Russian market, there are six types of internal combustion engines in the Patrol-5 model range:

  • gasoline 6-cylinder - 4.5 and 4.8 liters (TB45E and TB48DE);
  • diesel 6-cylinder - 2.8 (RD28ET) and 4.2 l (two models - TD422 and TD42T3);
  • diesel 4-cylinder - 3.0 l (ZD30D).

The petrol 4.5-liter power unit has a capacity of 200 horsepower with a maximum torque of 348 Nm.

This six-cylinder internal combustion engine is in-line, with distributed fuel injection, 12-valve.

The engine is designed to work with 95th gasoline, but can also "digest" AI-92.

The engine itself is very reliable, but it has a significant drawback - high fuel consumption. The actual fuel consumption on the highway is 16-18 liters, in the city - up to 25 l / 100 km.

Motor TB48DE - 245-horsepower, six-cylinder, in-line, with a torque of 400 Nm. Up to a hundred kilometers per hour, the internal combustion engine allows the car to accelerate in 10.8 seconds, to drive at a maximum speed of up to 190 km / h.

In terms of reliability, there are also no complaints about this power unit, but the consumption of gasoline with it is even greater: on the highway - 14.3 liters, in the city - 25 l / 100 km (real consumption reaches 30 liters).

The ZD30D 3.0 liter turbocharged diesel engine with direct fuel injection has good traction characteristics, allows you to accelerate the car to 160 km / h, dial a “hundred” in 16.3 seconds.

Motor power - 160 liters. s., maximum torque at 2000 rpm - 354 Nm. But with the characteristics of the internal combustion engine decent enough for a diesel engine, it does not differ in high reliability; first of all, the cylinder head fails.

The main cause of the breakdown is engine overheating, which occurs as a result of coolant leakage, and this is a characteristic disease of the Nissan Patrol 3.0 liter.

Transmission

The 5th generation Japanese SUV Patrol (1997-2010) is equipped with four types of gearboxes:

  • 4 and 5-speed automatic transmission;
  • Manual transmission-5 in two versions - FS5R30A and FS5R50B.

A mechanical transmission is paired only with a 3.0 TD turbodiesel, and a 4-speed diesel engine is also installed. automatic box.

A five-speed automatic transmission is available in the Elegance configuration with a 4.8-liter gasoline engine.

Nissan gearboxes on these cars rarely break down, most often Nissan Patrol repair is necessary if the car has been used for a long time in severe off-road conditions.

On the "mechanics" from frequent slipping, the clutch disc linings wear out, and the car owners themselves are mainly to blame for the malfunctions that occur in the transmission.

For bad roads and passing various obstacles, it is better to choose a car with a manual transmission, such a car is more adapted to harsh road conditions.

Nissan Patrol axles are one-piece, rear-wheel drive is permanent, the front axle is forcibly connected. Moreover, you can connect it only at low speed - the center differential is not provided here.

Hubs are installed on the front wheels, which are automatic, semi-automatic and mechanical.

The latter type of hubs is very reliable, but in order to connect the front axle, the driver with this design has to get out of the car every time.

On the restyled version, mechanical hubs were no longer installed, and the need to manually change transmission modes disappeared.

Chassis

Both suspensions on an SUV are dependent, the design is very simple, and there is practically nothing to break here. The most vulnerable point is the rear retractable stabilizer struts of the switchable stabilizer.

The brakes on both axles are disc, and the brake discs are all ventilated.

On early versions of the Nissan Patrol car, the suspension was spring, in the Y61 version, springs were already installed.

But such a design decision made the car move a little softer: when driving on rough roads, passengers in the car shake thoroughly, and it is difficult to somehow deal with this.

Body

The iron on the body of the SUV is not thin, you can’t push it with your finger. But the appearance of rust on the paintwork is not a rare phenomenon, especially often corrosion occurs under the moldings of the side doors, on the wheel arches, on the lower edge of the tailgate.

The Nissan Patrol is a Japanese full-size SUV produced by Nissan since 1951. The model is quite popular in many countries. It can be called the main rival. In the North American market, the car competes with Japanese luxury SUVs in the niche. The entire range of Nissan.

Car history

First generation (1951-1960)

When September 1951 came, the 4W60 version came out, which the factory workers called the Nissan Store. A little later, it was renamed the Nissan Bluebird Store. The 4W60 had a 75-horsepower 3.7-liter Nissan NAK powertrain from the Nissan 290 bus.

In addition, there was a plug-in all-wheel drive and a four-speed “mechanics”. The radiator grille received a steel nameplate. On top of that, they developed the 4W70 transporter version. Later, the 4W60 was replaced in construction with the 4W61 model. It happened in the summer of 1955.

The novelty was close to the debut model, except for the grille, one-piece windshield, chrome stripes on the hood and seats of various sizes (the passenger seat was slightly wider than the driver's seat). Other significant changes have affected the power plant.

A new 3.7-liter Nissan NB engine was installed on the 1955 car, developing 92 horsepower. After a while, it was replaced by a 105-horsepower 4.0-liter Nissan NC engine. The NISSAN nameplate itself on the grille was painted red, where there was a chrome lettering and edging. When October 1958 arrived, a replacement called 4W65 came out.

4W65

In addition to the grille and modified front fenders and hood, the 4W65 version was similar to the 4W61. The name "NISSAN" remained on the grille, and badges with the name "Patrol" were added to the side of the hood.

You could buy the WG4W65 version, which was an 8-seat station wagon that had a folding hardtop. The short series 4W66 Patrol was released at the end of 1959. There was only one difference - these versions were equipped with 4.0-liter engines that produced 125 “horses”. Production was discontinued in the summer of 1960.

WG4W65

The off-road version of the car had a utilitarian, however, reliable design - a powerful ladder-type frame, the wheels of which were attached to the dependent suspension “in a circle”. Leaf springs also found their place. The off-road car Nissan Patrol of the 1st generation received a hydraulic brake system with drum mechanisms on all wheels.

At that time, the Japanese did not install power steering. In general, the Nissan Patrol of the 1st family was bought to a greater extent for the armies and law enforcement agencies of various countries. "Civilian" versions can be found only in private configurations.

Second generation (1959-1980)

The novelty (at that time) debuted in 1960 and replaced the 4WXX line in construction. They produced an SUV in serial order until 1980 without significant design changes. But modest improvements, nevertheless, found their place, and they were regular.

In total, Japanese workers have produced and released more than 170,000 copies of the sixtieth series. The second generation Patrol was offered in 6 body styles, where there was an open top, a station wagon version with a dismantled steel top, a long wheelbase version with 3 doors, a pickup truck, a fire engine and a chassis for special bodies.

The second family of Nissan Patrol was equipped with a 6-cylinder 4.0-liter diesel "aspirated", which developed no more than 130 "horses" and 300 Nm of torque. At the very beginning, the “engine” worked together with a three-speed manual gearbox, and after a while it was replaced by a mechanical four-speed gearbox.

The Jeep had an all-wheel drive system without a center differential. It was possible to connect the front wheels, and the transfer case had a couple of rows of gear ratios. If we talk about the constructive part of the car, it has not undergone significant changes in relation to the previous generation.

There is the presence of the same powerful ladder-type frame, dependent suspension on two axles, leaf springs and fully drum brakes on 4 wheels. It is almost impossible to see the second generation Nissan Patrol with your own eyes, since very few cars could survive in good condition to our time.

At the time of its production, the model was famous for its indestructible body, excellent off-road performance and high-torque power unit.

Third generation (1980-1989)

In the autumn of 1980, the Nissan Patrol 3 SUV with the index "160" was officially presented at the Paris Motor Show. The car was in demand not only among civilians, but also in the service of the armed forces of different countries. Moreover, the third generation Nissan Patrol was used during United Nations peacekeeping operations.

A similar Patrol model was produced until 2003 (in the form of a 260 version since 1986), despite the release in 1987 of the next generation of the car. The third generation Patrol is a full-size SUV available in three-door soft-top, 5-door all-metal and 2- or 4-door pickup.

As a technical equipment, the car received one of 6 power units, depending on which modification is used in this case. Of these, 5 are diesel atmospheric turbocharged four-cylinder variants, as well as V-shaped six-cylinder, the volume of which varies from 2.8 to 3.3 liters.

Engines develop from 95 to 125 "horses". In addition, the engineers provided for a gasoline version, represented by an in-line four-cylinder 2.8-liter naturally aspirated engine that develops 121 horsepower. There are 2 transmission options to choose from: a five-speed manual or a three-range robotic gearbox.

The model could be either with rear-wheel drive or with all-wheel drive. At the same time, the wheels installed in front are connected manually using a clutch, and an inter-wheel differential of increased friction is used on the rear. In the technical component of the Nissan Patrol 3, the family has not changed dramatically when compared with previous families.

There is a frame body structure and dependent suspension with rigid bridges on springs. According to Nissan Patrol owner reviews, many note a reliable design, high-torque power plants, excellent cross-country ability, an acceptable degree of maintainability, a roomy interior and good equipment.

There were some drawbacks: the car received a stiffer suspension, a high price of original parts, a small supply of free space for rear passengers and poor sound insulation.

Fourth generation - Y60 (1987-1997)

The fourth series of Nissan Patrol with the Y60 value appeared on the market since 1987, and its production was launched at the Japanese plant. Just such jeeps, which are distinguished by a square body, are well known to the Russians - at the end of the 1980s they were imported by barter into the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Models existed until 1997, after which the 4th family was replaced by the 5th.

The 4th generation Patrol model in Japan began to be called Safari. Such machines were distinguished by an on-board network for 24V instead of the standard 12V.

The fourth generation Nissan Patrol was offered in 5 versions: hardtop, high hardtop, station wagon version, pickup and high van. For the models, a wide range of in-line 6-cylinder power units was provided. For example, the 1994 Nissan Patrol could come with naturally aspirated gasoline engines ranging from 3.0 to 4.2 liters, which produced from 136 to 184 “horses” and from 224 to 320 Nm of torque.

There were also diesel engines with a volume of 2.8–4.2 liters, which developed 92–170 horsepower and 170–363 Nm of ultimate thrust. The "engines" were synchronized with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Engineers equipped the SUV with rear-wheel drive or all 4, where there was an increased slip differential and a rear differential lock.

The modern Nissan Patrol car is distinguished among classmates by its increased cross-country ability and all-wheel drive, which is why many motorists love the model as a professional SUV.

When August 1993 arrived, fuel consumption was reduced on TD42 engines. However, this entailed an undesirable drop in the power of the power plant. The unique "engine" had a silver cylinder head cover, and the new unit was highlighted in black. On the motor, the placement of the vacuum pump was changed. On top of that, airbags for the driver began to be installed on some cars of the European version.

In 1995, the car underwent a modest restyling, where the front grille was redesigned. The structural basis of the Nissan Patrol 4 implied a spar frame and dependent spring suspension on both axles, where an anti-roll bar was installed on the front and rear axles.

The steering wheel was controlled by a hydraulic booster. All wheels already at that time had disc brakes, and the front ones were ventilated.

The Jeep received many good qualities, which include a simple and reliable design, a powerful frame, excellent off-road performance, affordable service, a fairly roomy interior and acceptable equipment. However, many do not like the presence of a stiff suspension, high fuel consumption, a brooding automatic transmission and uncomfortable seats.

Fifth generation - Y61 (1997)

Automobile company "Nissan Motor Company Ltd" ranks many wonderful cars. Among them is the Japanese Nissan Patrol of the 5th generation, which clearly stands out among similar models in a niche.

The best compliment for Patrol is that in all the troubled and roadless parts of the Earth, the workers of the United Nations use these vehicles during their missions. It is worth noting that the vehicle deserves such responsibility and fully justifies itself.

Since 1997, the Japanese company began to produce the Nissan Patrol of the 5th family. When 2004 came, the car was upgraded. Many people call "Patrol Y61" a real SUV, which has a masculine character and brutal appearance. This eloquently confirms the appearance and interior of the SUV.

Throughout his appearance, his conservative and indifferent attitude to automotive fashion is noticeable, since the model was designed to work in remote lands, and some pathos innovations were nothing to him. Even a child can easily characterize the appearance of a car: large, with a square shape, but simple.

In the interior space, the car also does not have exquisite elements, especially when compared with the modernized cars of competitors. There is no wood, soft leather, chrome and a V-shaped eight-cylinder super-engine. Perhaps for this reason, he loses in sales to all rivals.

Quite unusually, those who buy these cars are happy because they feel free from theirs and have no desire to pay 1.5 times more for slightly more comfortable interior details, smoother body lines and a pair of modern headlights. Inside the car, everything looks banal, but all the elements are located where they belong.

The interior design of the fifth generation Nissan Patrol is quite solid. You can complain a little about the lack of visibility of the mirror that is installed inside the car, but this disadvantage is compensated by large side mirrors. Although it is worth saying that the modernization that took place in 2004, nevertheless, added a little freshness to the interior design. The quality of the plastic used has grown, and the color schemes have become more interesting.

The "fifth Patrol" was based on a classic, corrosion-resistant frame structure, to which continuous bridges and dependent suspensions are attached. Such a base is ideal for heavy off-road. All-wheel drive system can be connected. The machine has a locking rear cross-axle differential, which, due to its simplicity, is quite reliable during operation.

The Japanese SUV inspires confidence, respect and a sense of security. Anyone who has ever ridden in this car felt that she was not killed. When serious bumps appear in front of the car, the suspension responds to them harshly. To turn around, a considerable radius is required, which characterizes a large base.

The car handles great in a straight line. However, the car reluctantly changes the direction of its movement - this is felt when the steering wheel commands are delayed. The weight of the 5th generation Nissan Patrol Y61 is 2.5 tons. The volume of the luggage compartment is 810 liters of usable space.

Under the hood, a 4.8-liter inline six-cylinder 245-horsepower engine with a five-speed automatic transmission is installed. All this allows the car to accelerate to 190 kilometers per hour. They also provided for a 3.0-liter diesel unit, which produces about 160 “horses”. It is paired with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

Consumption is very immodest - outside the city, about 15 liters, and in urban mode, even 25 liters for every hundred kilometers for a gasoline power unit. As for the diesel version, it is a little more modest - 14/9 liters for every hundred kilometers, respectively.

Sixth generation (2010–present)

The sixth generation Nissan Patrol is still the same four-wheel drive SUV beloved by many, which was once again presented to the public at an exhibition in the UAE in 2010. Since then, the active distribution of this model around the world began.

In the specification, this car is listed under the index Y62. Compared to previous generations, the sixth has undergone significant changes not only in design, but also in the technical part. Below you can find information about Nissan Patrol technical specifications.

Exterior

If we say that the 6th generation of the Nissan Patrol SUV turned out to be big, then this would not be true, because the car came out just huge. Bypassing the car, you never cease to be surprised not only by its solid body dimensions, but also by the smoothness of the lines and the sophistication of the forms of an off-road car.

There really is a feeling that you have a cruise yacht in front of you, the purpose of which is not to sail on water, but to move along the land surface of the Earth. Thanks to the roof rails, an auxiliary luggage compartment can be installed. The nose of the car looks like a large chest of drawers of an expensive furniture set with a massive table top and a stylish frame of a radiator grille in a chrome frame.

There are also slanted headlights, a compact bumper cut at the bottom and fog lamps added for the whole picture. Thanks to the structure of the front bumper, you can not only climb high curbs and increase the geometric cross-country ability of the car, but also demonstrate to everyone the strong front suspension arms, the thickness of which is like a bodybuilder's forearm.

On the side, the SUV has classic flat rooflines and a sill, huge wheel arches where you can put big wheels, and in the basic version there are 20-inch rollers. There are smooth outlines and puffy surfaces of wings and doors.

The large dimensions of the doorways, which have a rectangular shape, together with the side steps, not only add solidity to the car, but also serve as excellent helpers when boarding the driver and passengers in an SUV, which is quite a lot.

In general, it’s hard to say that people get into the car, because you simply enter the 6th generation Nissan Patrol, only tilting your head slightly, as if bowing respectfully to the car. The stern, although it seems quite simple, but if you look at it more closely, you understand that it is not only attractive, but also functional.

The rear tailgate is electrically operated (only the launch model does not have this comfort option). Thanks to it, you have access to a huge hold of an off-road car Nissan Patrol 6 of the family.

The new SUV looks like a chic and expensive car, which is partly achieved with the help of a special entourage with an abundance of chrome elements, which include the presence of roof rails, glass frames, door handles, air vents, which are located on the wings in front, and strips on the rear door for the luggage compartment.

Base black will be offered as a body color. For 28,000 rubles, it will be possible to paint the car in one of white, silver, gray, gray-green, light beige or purple.

Also, the aft part has a spoiler, which protects the rear window from dirt and improves the streamlining of the car, which, in turn, reduces fuel consumption at high speeds.

Of course, he is not able to strongly press this heavy car. The following describes the Nissan Patrol dimensions. The same article has information about the fuel consumption of the Nissan Patrol.

Body dimensions are as follows:

  • Length 5140 mm;
  • Width 1995 mm;
  • Height 1934 mm;
  • Wheelbase 3075 mm;
  • Clearance 274 mm.

Interior

When you sit behind the steering wheel of the Nissan Patrol of the 6th family, the leather upholstery of the seats, door cards and almost the entire front panel immediately catches your eye. The interior is so chic that it can surpass its closest rival, the Toyota Land Cruiser. The chairs received, in addition to the equipment of electric drives, the adjustment of the lumbar support, which also functions with the help of an electric drive.

The driver's seat can be raised so that even a short person can see the right and left corner of the hood, which is very handy given the difficult terrain. In order to start the power unit of the Nissan Patrol 6 SUV, you need to keep the key fob in your bag or somewhere nearby and press the start / stop key.

The steering wheel was sheathed in leather and contains 4 spokes, which once again reminds us of what a solid car we are in. The multimedia system comes with a screen that supports touch input, something that Patrol's closest rivals lack. A considerable number of cars are tinted, but if the driver needs to drive towards the sun, then you can use the sun visors, which are very large in this SUV.

Those people who sit in the back are given just a lot of free space. Separately, I would like to mention the climate system for the back row, to be more precise, about the air vents. They were placed above the doorway, which looks a bit like going to a store, when after entering it, warm or cold air blows from above.

The manufacturer assures that such a solution makes it possible to improve the efficiency of the air conditioning of the entire interior of the SUV. The climate system unit in the car is located in the rear wall of the box between the seats installed in front. The rear seat backs can be adjusted thanks to the servo, which also makes the car more status.

The SUV also has a third row of seats, which is perfect for family people. However, despite the fact that Patrol is large, there is not enough free space in the third row. Nevertheless, the presence of armrests and coasters in the very last places is provided.

Salon performed very high quality, solid, expensive and elegant. The materials correspond to the premium class, there is black or beige leather, carpet, wood inserts on the front panel, center console, tunnel and door cards. After getting into the Nissan Patrol 6 car, I immediately want to check if the shoes are clean so as not to stain such a beautiful interior.

The front two seats are heated and ventilated. Thanks to the barely noticeable side bolsters, the driver or passenger will feel confident when cornering and when driving off-road. The seat, along with the steering column and mirrors, are electrically operated and have the option of storing the preset settings.

The leather steering wheel looks great, the radii of the instrument panel look rather strict, but they are pleasantly diluted by the color display of the onboard computer. All devices are distinguished by their informativeness and readability. The color touch screen can display all the necessary information from the navigation system, cameras that provide panoramic visibility.

Setting up the navigation system and cameras can be done on a convenient block, which was placed below the screen. Under the unit, a Bose music system with support for CD, MP3, DVD, USB, iPod, designed for 13 speakers, has found its place. Below all, a three-zone climate control tuning unit is installed.

Multifunctional color touch display

The first row of seats makes it possible to sit comfortably for the driver and the passenger sitting next to him, even with considerable dimensions. The second row has a heating option, and it accommodates 3 people. There is also plenty of space, like in a limousine. The third row allows you to sit as if on a hill, opening a wide passage.

Sitting in the 3rd row is quite comfortable, but sitting is not so comfortable with bent knees. Therefore, there is only room for a couple of people, but the width of the place is enough for three. Information about Nissan Patrol specifications can be found below.

Comfort in the cabin:

  • Power steering with automatic speed control;
  • Power steering;
  • Multifunctional leather steering wheel;
  • Cruise control with steering wheel controls;
  • Audio control on the steering wheel;

  • Driver's seat memory.

Specifications

power unit

Speaking about the power plant, I would like to say that the Japanese did not invent anything new here and installed the already proven powerful 32-valve 5.6-liter V8 engine, where there is a valve timing and valve opening degree control system (VVEL), and a direct fuel injection system ( DIG), which makes it possible to maximize the use of the design capabilities of the power unit.

It allows you to use 405 horsepower at 5,800 rpm. At 4,000 rpm, a torque limit of 56 Nm is reached. The first hundred is reached in 6.6 seconds, and the maximum speed is 210 kilometers per hour.

The average consumption of gasoline, according to the developers, will be about 14.5 liters per 100 kilometers, but judging by the experience of the previous pre-styling model, it is still necessary to rely on the figure of 16.0 liters.

Independent tests show that in a city with traffic jams, the car requires about 22 liters. On the highway, the indicator drops to 12-13 liters, depending on the speed.

Transmission

The operation of the “engine” is synchronized only with a 7-speed automatic gearbox. The technical component of the 6th generation Nissan Patrol includes a new body with a reinforced frame built into the power body structure and an All Mode 4 × 4 all-wheel drive transmission.

Thanks to the electromagnetic clutch, which is responsible for turning on the front axle, it is possible, depending on the road, to drive in one of three modes, which are selected by the driver with the setting wheel located on the central tunnel.

  • Automatic mode - the torque goes to the front axle using electronics, depending on how the rear wheels will slip.
  • 4H - the clutch is rigidly blocked, and the result is a permanent four-wheel drive.
  • 4L - in addition to blocking the clutch, a lower gear is engaged (used for difficult off-road).

You can also press the key and turn on the rear axle differential lock. You can even choose the required adjustments for the operation of the gearbox on the track, stones, sand, mud or snow.

Suspension

The engineering staff provided for the presence of an original system that works with body roll when turning and body vibrations when driving on difficult surfaces (HBMC). Also, the latest update that came to the 6th Nissan Patrol family allows you to better cope with large rolls at high speeds.

It turns out, despite its impressive size, the off-road car, as before, and most likely even better, began to be well controlled, it is informative. Both front and rear are equipped with an independent double wishbone suspension.

Brake system

The machine has a reliable disc brake system with ventilation function on all wheels. In addition, various electronic type assistants are provided.

Crash test

Despite its rather long history, the Japanese vehicle has been subjected to a large number of tests more than once, but only the 5th and 6th families were able to get the long-awaited 5 stars. According to the results of the Nissan Patrol Euro NCAP crash test, the results exceeded all expectations.

The safety level for an adult passenger is 90 percent, for pedestrians - 75 percent, for a child - 85 percent. Active safety at 89 percent. On top of that, the car was able to win 5 stars in the following tests.

Frontal collision with a deformable barrier at a speed of 64 km/h, impact with a side stand at a speed of 50 km/h, a collision with a pole at a speed of 30 km/h and an accident with dummy pedestrians at a speed of 40 km/h. The front impact was rated 4 out of 5 possible stars. As for the legs of the driver and the passenger sitting in front, everything is in order there.

Comparison with competitors

Due to the fact that Nissan Patrol was able to move from a group of serious SUVs to an army of large and pretentious SUVs, it is necessary to talk about its competitors. This is with a cost of 2,680,000 rubles, Chevrolet Tahoe, Infiniti QX56, the price of which is 700,000 rubles more than the price of Nissan.

In addition, this includes the Mercedes-Benz GL, the cost of which starts at 3,000,000 rubles and the main worst competitor from the same Japan - The cost of the latest model is about 2,942,000 rubles.

After the end of World War II, Japanese industry literally lay in ruins. Almost had to start from scratch. No wonder the Japanese were tempted not to bother with their own auto industry, but to buy cars from the Americans. Moreover, in the 40s, cars from the USA were rightfully considered the best in the world ...

Interestingly, the Americans themselves pushed the Japanese to revive the national auto industry. The Korean War began, the army demanded all-wheel drive vehicles in large quantities. And since it was almost a stone's throw from the Japanese islands to South Korea, it was quite logical not to drag cars from the United States, but to produce them near the theater of operations in Japanese factories in the image and likeness of American technology.

"Japonovillis". Nissan Patrol 4W60 (1951) was visually different from the American prototype with a long "humped" hood and horizontal grille. Pay attention to the winkers - flag turn indicators - behind the front fenders

EARLY YEARS
One of the three manufacturers that received an order for a “jeep-shaped” army all-terrain vehicle was Nissan. Its engineers quickly prepared a prototype that looked a lot like Willys MB, and in 1951 the first 4W60 series Nissan Patrols rolled off the assembly line. At first glance, it might seem that the new Japanese SUV is an exact copy of an American jeep from the Second World War with a right-hand drive. Unless, of course, we do not take into account the characteristic horizontal grille and a small "hump" on the hood.
However, if you look from the side, it turned out that the Japanese "copy" is noticeably longer than the American original - 3615 mm for the Patrol with a base of 2207 mm against 3378 mm and 2032 mm for the MB, respectively. The reason for this was the inline six-cylinder Nissan NAK gasoline engine borrowed from the bus. With a working volume of 3.7 liters, it developed a power of 75 hp. With. at 3200 rpm and a torque of 206 Nm at 1600 rpm. The weight of the car was 1.5 tons. Otherwise, the design did not fundamentally differ from the American prototype: a four-speed gearbox, a plug-in front axle (transfer case without a reduction gear), all-wheel suspension dependent spring, hydraulic drum brakes. It goes without saying that all these components and assemblies were based on a solid ladder-type frame.

Soon, the release of a completely closed modification with a station wagon was also launched. And in 1955, the modernized Patrol 4W61 series saw the light with a new (also six-cylinder) NB engine with a working volume of 3665 cm3, which developed power already at 92 hp. With. A little later, it was replaced by a four-liter Nissan NC, which produced 105 hp. With. at 3400 rpm and a torque of 264 Nm at 1600 rpm. Weighted by only 50 kg, the car accelerated to 105 km / h. Externally, it was distinguished by protruding headlights in the style of Willys CJ3 (see 4 × 4 Club'2012), a one-piece windshield and chrome decor a la Willys Station Wagon.

It is curious that the rear fenders of the 1958 Nissan Patrol 4W65 strongly resembled ... the Soviet GAZ-67B

In 1958, another improved version appeared - Patrol 4W65. Outwardly, it was distinguished by additional chrome strips on the grille and an extended track, which required new fenders. It is curious that the front ones were suspiciously similar to the wings of the Willys CJ4 that never went into the series, and the rear ones evoked thoughts of ... the Soviet GAZ-67B! Which, in general, was not surprising. Quite a few "Gaziks" came to the Americans and Japanese as trophies during the Korean War.

In addition, in the same year, an updated eight-seater station wagon WG4W65 was released on a base extended to 2500 mm and a fire version with a pump and a small supply of water or a foam generator. And at the end of 1959, the transitional 4W66 Patrol went on sale with the same engine, but boosted to 125 hp. With. It was not released for a long time - until the summer of 1960, when the second generation, the 60 series, saw the light.

JAPANESE-INDIAN
The main difference between the new Nissan Patrol 60 was the body without protruding wings, solved in a newfangled linear design. However, the developers did not fight for style: by reducing the width from 1700 to 1693 mm, they managed to significantly increase the interior space. Now the front seats (narrow driver and wide passenger) could sit three. At the same time, without exception, Patrol was equipped with normal steel doors (quick-detachable) with power windows. The electrical wiring was completely protected from water. A winch and two power take-off shafts were offered as additional equipment.

Spacious.
Roomy Nissan Patrol WG4W65 (1958) could carry eight people in two front seats and two rear side benches

Six body types were produced: a convertible, a short station wagon L60 with a removable steel top (both with a folding windshield), a long-wheelbase three-door station wagon WG, a pickup 62ZG60H (from the late 60s), a chassis for special bodies G60H-A and a fire truck FH60. Small batches produced five-door station wagons (base 2800 mm). At the request of the buyer, it was possible to order a body with a drop side, with a swing side or with a narrow double-leaf rear door (only for closed versions). The rear seats were located either along the sides, or traditionally - across the car.

THE CONQUEST OF AMERICA
Another reason for a radical change in design was the planned entry into the North American automotive market in the early 60s. I must say that Patrol 60 had every chance of success - if only because it was significantly more powerful than all possible competitors. The engine from an OHV valve train truck developed 134 hp. With. SAE (125 hp DIN) versus 72 hp With. according to SAE for Jeep CJ5 and 93 hp. With. according to SAE from International Scout. The gearboxes of the "Japanese" were mechanical, three- or four-speed. Especially for the Americans, the shift lever was moved to the steering column. The curb weight, depending on the length of the base and the type of body, ranged from 1540-1800 kg.

Competitor.
In 1961, Nissan tried to challenge Jeep with their new powerful (134 hp) Patrol 60 model.

True, he never got an automatic transmission and hydraulic booster (an almost mandatory set for American SUVs of the late 60s and early 70s), and engine power never exceeded 147 hp. With. according to SAE (since 1965). Which, however, was quite enough to accelerate to 125 km / h (with a three-speed gearbox). But the main problem was an elementary distrust of the new brand, especially the Japanese one (the war died down relatively recently). Played a negative role and weak advertising support (few people knew about the new car), and, as a result, the second generation Patrol did not go to the USA. From 1961 to 1969, only about 4,000 copies were sold.

But the car is becoming popular in Asia, Latin America and partly in Africa, in those countries where the positions of Land Rover and Toyota Land Cruiser were not so strong. Indians are showing interest in the new Patrol. Since 1969, at the Vehicle Factory Jabalpur - VFJ - the production of a licensed copy called JONGA begins. It stands for Jabalpur Ordinance aNd Guncarriage Assembly (“assembly of military vehicles and carriages in Jabalpur”). The car was produced for 30 years, and in 1996 an attempt was made to interest civilian buyers by installing a Hino diesel engine under the hood. Alas, poor quality, as well as outdated construction and design, did not allow for any success.

Long-playing.
The 60 series Nissan Patrol has been in production for almost 20 years. Modification with a removable hard top and narrow rear doors was especially popular

SPANISH AND RADER
In 1980, the place of the 60 series veteran was taken by the new Nissan Patrol 160 series. In Japan, it was sold as the Nissan Safari (it is easy to distinguish it by the “windows” in the front doors), in some countries of South America it was remembered as Samurai. It favorably differed from its predecessor by a comfortable, finally four-door body (the base was extended to almost three meters), decided in the spirit of the ultra-modern American “square” design at that time. The car was 4690 mm long, 1690 mm wide and 1805 mm high. At the same time, a short-wheelbase (2350 mm) convertible with a safety arc and a removable hard or folding soft top, as well as a fire truck, was retained. In addition, it was possible to order a modification with a high roof (High Roof) and a hinged rear door. Depending on the configuration, either two folding benches on the sides or a folding third row of seats were placed in the luggage compartment.

VERTICAL MUSIC

Finally, the new Patrol has got a modern plastic instrument panel (instead of steel), powerful sound insulation with a carpeted floor. In the maximum configuration, you could enjoy power windows, air conditioning and an elegant device called the "inclinometer". The head unit on some modifications was placed very unusually - vertically between the driver's and passenger's seats.

Real Japanese.
Nissan Safari (1980-83) differed from the export Patrol 160 mainly ...

The chassis, at the request of the workers, has undergone evolutionary rather than revolutionary changes. Neither the frame, nor the rigid bridges on the springs, nor the plug-in all-wheel drive, nor the two-stage transfer case have gone anywhere. But at the same time, automatic clutches for turning on the front axle shafts appeared (you could also buy a variant with mechanical ones), power steering and a limited-slip rear cross-axle differential. In addition, the Patrol 160 received new brakes (front ventilated discs) with a vacuum booster.

The standard engine was an in-line carbureted six-cylinder OHV with a displacement of 3956 cm3 and a power of 130 hp. With. at 3600 rpm (torque 294 Nm at 1600 rpm). In addition, the attention of buyers was offered an atmospheric diesel engine with a working volume of 3246 cm3, which developed a power of 95 liters. With. at 3600 rpm (torque 294 Nm at 1600 rpm). It was not particularly economical (fuel consumption was 12-18 liters per 100 km), but the Kiki high-pressure fuel pump could even digest Soviet diesel fuel without tangible damage. The maximum speed with a diesel engine and with a gasoline engine for the Nissan Patrol 160 was the same - 130 km / h.

Firefighter.
The Safari's rugged chassis made it the ideal vehicle for the installation of special bodies. The fire version was assembled directly at Nissan factories

In 1983, the Patrol/Safari was redesigned with round headlights replaced by rectangular ones. At the same time, the interior changed somewhat, a five-speed gearbox appeared (and a little later, a three-speed “automatic”) and high-speed engines. The new carburetor "six" with a working volume of 2.8 liters developed a power of 134 liters. With. at 5600 rpm. The diesel received a turbocharger, due to which the power rose to 120 hp. With. at 4000 rpm. The speed of the petrol version increased to 150 km/h (a bit later to 160 km/h), which gave German advertisers an excuse to present the improved Patrol as a Sportwagen.

In the same year, the Spanish version of the Ebro Patrol appeared. A little later, it was renamed Nissan. The main difference is a simplified (at first) equipment and an inexpensive four-cylinder diesel engine with a working volume of 2.7 liters and a power of 70 liters. With. at 3600 rpm. In the second half of the 80s, the production of the 160 finally moved to Spain. On this occasion, it was renamed 260. At the same time, the car grew a little in size due to wheel arch extensions and received almost the same engines as the Japanese family. It was released until 2003.

Old friend.
The Spanish Nissan Patrol 260 (1987-2003) is still loved by Russian jeepers. Old love doesn't rust. Well, except that frames sometimes ...

IN HONOR OF GLORIOUS VICTORIES
At the end of 1987, the new Nissan Patrol GR (Grand Raid - in honor of the sporting success of the Nissan rally team) was introduced. He received a lever spring dependent suspension of all wheels and an extended track, which is why the body had to be supplemented with plump sub-stampings that imitate separate fenders of passenger cars of the 30s. The resemblance to the latter was further enhanced by the aluminum running boards. As a result, the "raider" was heard in breadth up to 1800 mm, which, coupled with the new suspension, had a very positive effect on handling and ride comfort.

Since the car became significantly heavier, it was equipped with new six-cylinder engines - diesel and gasoline of the same working volume of 4.2 liters and a power of 115 hp, respectively. With. at 4000 rpm (the turbo version produced 125 hp) and 170 hp. With. at 4200 rpm. With the latest engine GR accelerated to 170 km / h. For economical Europeans, a 2.9-liter turbodiesel and 115 liters was intended. With.

Diesel Patrol GR, as well as the Spanish Patrol 260, were remembered by many as the brightest representatives of the first wave of foreign cars, which began to be massively imported into the USSR in the late 80s. Interestingly, the first advertising pages with typical examples of bourgeois automotive luxury and excess were printed not in "Behind the Wheel", but in the free-thinking and at the same time terribly far from technology magazine Ogonyok. To Soviet drivers, Japanese off-road vehicles seemed the limit of perfection. They were simple in design (the era of electronics had not yet arrived), rarely broke down and were maintainable. At the same time, due to the self-locking differential and powerful, high-torque engines, Patrol was distinguished by excellent cross-country ability. Later, already in the 90s, he became an object of worship for lovers of the most bizarre tuning. Even now, in certain circles, the Nissan Patrol 260 and Patrol GR are valued very, very highly.
