  3. Minimal damage to the environment. The exhaust gas contains two-thirds less harmful substances than the exhaust from gasoline or diesel.
  4. The increase in mileage from gas station to gas station. The car runs on two types of fuel, respectively, when gas runs out, you can drive on gasoline.
  5. Safety. Rumors that a HBO cylinder could explode from temperature extremes or impact were denied by the ADAC German car owners protection club. Under his control, crash tests of cylinders were carried out under fire and accident conditions. The results were satisfactory.

Few cons:

  1. Not every gas station has a gas station. Repair of HBO is carried out only at specialized service stations.
  2. Slight reduction in speed, a drop in engine power by 15%.
  3. Influence of high and low temperatures. If the car is heated by the sun, the pressure of the gas in the cylinder increases. To lower it, you need to develop a few liters. In cold weather, the gas liquefies and refuses to enter the system. So in winter you can start the engine only on gasoline.

Laying the main pipe

The main pipe is necessary in order for the gas to enter the reducer from the cylinder. Installation should begin from the gearbox, along the bottom of the car (preferably along the gasoline wire) and then connect to the multivalve.

Installation of nozzles

First, it is necessary to insert the fittings as close as possible to the gasoline injector, after which the gas injectors are installed. Then the gas lines are connected. They must be the same length, but not more than 18 cm.

Placement of the control unit and sensors

All electronics are installed under the hood. For proper connection, complete with HBO there is an instruction that describes all the wires and contacts.

After the installation is complete, start the car. The first three times we turn the key in the ignition lock without starting the engine. This is necessary in order for the fuel pump to create the necessary pressure in the rail. After that, the car can be started. If everything is done correctly, then the next step will be setting up the 4th generation HBO with your own hands.

What to set up?

To adjust the parameters of freshly installed gas equipment, you will need a laptop, a 4th generation HBO setup program and a special cable.

There are many programs such as Zenit JZ, KME NEVO or STAG. They are similar in appearance (interface), any can be downloaded from the official website and installed. Consider a program for setting up HBO 4th generation STAG.

Its interface is quite functional. The instructions for setting up HBO 4th generation are simple and straightforward. The meaning of each parameter is explained in additional footnotes that pop up when you hover over the cursor.

The values ​​set at the HBO manufacturer are immediately displayed. If the gas equipment is not new, then the information from the controller will be displayed in the program. It will indicate how often the gas was used, how many times diagnostics and adjustments were carried out.

If there is a new controller firmware, the program will immediately offer to install it.

A cable for setting up a 4th generation HBO can be bought, or you can make it yourself based on the PL2303 board.

Settings

The main window of the program contains the main indicators by which the ECU works:

  • conditions under which there will be a switch from gasoline to gas or vice versa (temperature, engine speed, pressure);
  • gas fraction (gas pressure after the reducer);
  • vacuum in the collector;
  • period of injection of gas and petrol injectors.

The "map" tab displays the operation schedule of petrol (blue curve), gas injectors (green curve) and the coefficient of conversion of petrol injection to gas (orange line).

On gas equipment that has not been adjusted in time, the control unit will completely imitate the operation of gasoline injectors, which will generate an error on the on-board computer. The reason is that the mixture formation of gasoline and gas injectors will be the same, but the fuel will be different in terms of octane number: what is good for gasoline is incorrect for gas.

Calibration

At idle, the ECU measures and remembers the parameters of the petrol injectors. Then the operation of one gasoline injector is replaced by the operation of a gas one. Gradually turn on all gas nozzles.

By alternately increasing and decreasing the injection time of gas injectors, it is necessary to bring the exhaust figure to the norm (conversion factor). To obtain the value of the gas injection time, this coefficient is multiplied by the petrol injection time.

After calibration, the machine automatically switches to petrol. You need to drive it to check the settings.

Graph adjustments

After self-configuring the 4th generation HBO, it is better not to remove the gasoline card. The car after the check will go on gas. If the map is deleted, then you will have to temporarily ride on gasoline, changing the engine load and speed, until the system creates a new map.

If the operation schedules of petrol and gas injectors diverge, then it is necessary to set up the 4th generation LPG map. To do this, we fix the points of divergence and maximum convergence of the green and blue lines on the orange line - the settings at these points are considered optimal and should not be changed. Then on the orange line we mark the point of maximum divergence of the lines of gas and gasoline and lower it to the distance of the divergence of the lines down.

We drive a car in different modes and see if the graphs matched. If not, then repeat the map settings until the graphs match.

Fuel injection control

Injection adjustment is the second most important phase in setting up the 4th generation HBO with your own hands.

First, warm up the car to the operating temperature of the gearbox. We switch to gasoline and for five minutes we observe the performance of the injection of gasoline injectors. We turn on the gas again, but we continue to monitor the gasoline indicators. If the number has increased, this means a lean mixture, if it has decreased, it means enriched.

You can change this state by adjusting the orange line of the graph: if - raise the line by two clicks, if the mixture is too rich - lower it.

Setting up gas-balloon equipment on a car is completed. If the HBO system works without interruption: switching between nozzles occurs on time and smoothly, the engine does not troit, has good dynamics - this means that the settings were made correctly. After some time of operation, you can re-diagnose.

Setting up a gas reducer HBO

The gearbox is a necessary element in the design of gas equipment. With its help, the pressure of the gas entering the cylinder is regulated. When stable, the reducer keeps the pressure at the same level, although with a sharp increase in flow, the pressure may decrease, but only slightly.

Adjustment of the HBO reducer is necessary when installing new equipment. And after 100,000 km it is worth re-diagnosing it and correcting it.

The correct operation of HBO depends not only on the quality of its electronic settings. After a certain period of operation (3 or 4 years), valves and membranes may wear out, which will lead to excessive gas consumption.

This moment can be delayed by the correct operation of the HBO (in particular, the gearbox): the engine must start on the native fuel of the car (gasoline or diesel). Only after the engine temperature reaches at least 30 ° C, you can switch to gas. At low temperatures, the reducer diaphragm may freeze. That is why the gearbox is connected to the antifreeze lines.

The 4th generation HBO gearbox is not quite easy to set up with your own hands. There are two ways to correct: adjusting the sensitivity and adjusting the amount of gas in the idle channel.

Before starting the tuning, you need to let the engine warm up, and then turn off the gas supply, allowing the engine to process the remaining fuel in it.

Idle adjustment:

  1. We set the power register to maximum.
  2. We completely wrap the idle screw, and then unscrew it five turns.
  3. Set the sensitivity control to the middle position.
  4. We start the car on gas and increase the speed by suction to 2000.
  5. At the same time, we remove the suction (very slowly) and use the idle speed controller to look for the moment when the starter reaches maximum speed.
  6. We remove the suction completely. You should get a stable idle.
  7. Slowly turn the sensitivity knob.
  8. We raise the floating speed to the maximum with the idle speed controller.
  9. The regulator did not help - we tighten the sensitivity screw a couple of turns and repeat everything again.
  10. We achieve 1200 rpm at idle, and then smoothly reduce them to 950 with the idle speed controller.

Reducer sensitivity setting:

  1. Very slowly turn off the sensitivity control until the idle value changes.
  2. As soon as the number of revolutions has changed, we twist the regulator back quite a bit.
  3. We check the setting: sharply press the accelerator pedal. The engine should immediately react - without jerks and delays.

Power Register Adjustment:

  1. We bring the starter speed to 3500 by turning the power regulator.
  2. As soon as the speed begins to fall, we stop the procedure.

Checking the quality of the setting:

  1. Press the accelerator pedal sharply.
  2. We twist the sensitivity control by a quarter until the starter speed starts to decrease sharply.
  3. Turn off the regulator half a turn and let the engine idle.

If the do-it-yourself HBO setup of the 4th generation is done correctly, the internal combustion engine will work smoothly and stably.

You can read the full installation report here. Let me remind you that the Stag Premium kit was originally installed with an AC Autogas gearbox and an OMVL Fast Light gas injector rail.

4th generation gearbox - AC Autogas and Bigas

Immediately I had questions about the gearbox, it had a pressure of XX percent by 10-20, but under load the gearbox behaved normally. The pressure drops were not too big. After some time, the pressure float increased and the gas flow rate increased. I had to change the gearbox for my money, it was replaced by Bigas.

Bigas perfectly keeps the pressure on the twentieth, as it set when installing 1.2 atmospheres, so it still stands. But the situation with extreme regimes is worse. The pressure sags to 0.7 and the car switches to gasoline. This happens already at 4000 rpm in 1st or 2nd gear. Agree declared 140 kW does not smell, Captiva 100 kW. But with Bigas I drove for about a year (~ 35000 km) and now I think it is in good condition. And if you change the filter in the gas valve and wait for the summer, the drawdowns will decrease.

Gas injector rail OMVL Fast Light

The rail of the nozzles during the period of operation (44,000 km) did not cause any problems. She worked with the gas injection time at XX - 4.5-5 ms (depending on the gas temperature and pressure), the maximum injections were about 21-22 ms. There was no error of fully open injectors. But I had a transition to gasoline when the pressure dropped to 0.7 atmospheres.

HBO electronics 4th generation Stag Premium

I liked the Stag premium electronics much more than the previous OMVL electronics. But I hoped for more. Firstly, when I bought it, I thought it was enough to do auto-calibration and turn on auto-tuning by OBD. In fact, the Stag Premium needs to be well tuned manually at the beginning (using a vacuum for example), it is even important to set up temperature corrections before turning on the OBD. And only after a complete manual setup, OBD is turned on. But for me, even so, this function worked correctly only half. The point is in the automotive control unit and how quickly a short-term correction turns into a long-term one. It takes a long time for me at rpms below 2500. Therefore, the OBD correction function works correctly only after 2500 rpm. It's good that Stag Premium has a function to select the OBD turn-on speed. Otherwise, money would be down the drain. I even turned off OBD at one time, but returned it because the long-term correction went literally by 4% and bad starts began in the morning. Turned on the OBD correction after 2500 rpm and everything was ok.

Of the minuses - not correct reading of revolutions. Constant jumps in rpm up to 10,000. Due to jumps in rpm, I can't do auto-calibration.

Also, poor temperature adjustment is incorporated in the control unit. I had to change the gas temperature correction quite a lot.

HBO installation

In the installation of equipment, I was not entirely satisfied with the initial position of the Autogas reducer (do not crawl to adjust the pressure). Later, the problem of a leak in the tie-in into the cooling system manifested itself. I already bought spring clamps, I hope this helps.

Savings from operation

To calculate the savings from the installed HBO, I used the program for the phone. Recorded by checks and odometer - gas and gasoline, all in a bunch. The latest statistics before resetting the smartphone looked like this:

Mileage for which I recorded - 14509 km

Average consumption - 11.79 liters per 100

The price of 1 km of the path is 1.76 rubles.

Liters spent - 1711

Money spent - 25488 rubles.

I wrote this out for the Chevrolet forum, after these data the consumption was still decreasing since I traveled to other cities a couple of times. The indicators are excellent considering that these data also include gasoline for heating. You will not see such an expense on gasoline for everyone. Recently, by the way, gasoline began to cost 31-32 rubles, and gas has fallen in price to 13.7 in Penza, and in Saransk, in general, won 11 rubles each.

Outcome

For a year and 2 months I drove 44,000 km on gas. In general, I was satisfied with the work of Stag Premium, but the thirst for new discoveries does not give me rest, and tomorrow I am going to dismantle the equipment. I will put something new, which I will talk about later. You will learn about the choice of components for a new installation from the video. I'll write about it later.

Today, when analyzing the cost of installing HBO, you can see that the price of installing an identical kit for one brand of car at different service stations can vary significantly.

A fair question arises, what is the difference? Does it all come down to the greed of some contractors and the entrepreneurial spirit of others?

This is wrong!

Let's start the analysis of this issue from the basics. For example, specialists tell the client that they will install “brains” (a line of electronic control units) from STAG (Digitronic), OMVL. At the same time, they forget to say that STAG, OMVL, BRC, as well as other manufacturers, as a rule, have several lines of equipment. The simplest option is ECONOMI blocks (STAG 200), followed by STANDART (STAG 4), then PLUS (STAG 300 plus) and the highest line of PREMIUM (STAG 300 premium). The cost of each option is significantly different from the previous one.

How many customers know this?

You can even visually determine which version of the “brains” is better. But who knows? Most often, budget blocks are installed that cannot perform their direct functions. So, the STAG 4 unit cannot be installed on a car manufactured before 2004 (see table 1)

A very important function of the gas block is to ensure that the amount of gas supplied is as close as possible to its gasoline counterpart. The complexity of the program and the accuracy of the HBO is directly proportional to the power of the processor.

In other words, if the car was manufactured before 2004 and complies with EURO 2, EURO 3 environmental standards, then STAG-4 plus will fit your car and will work great on it. For a “younger” car, you need to install the STAG-300-4 premium control unit. However, this equipment is offered at a completely different cost!

The second issue is the gearbox. In most cases, a TOMASETTO reducer is installed. These are very reliable, inexpensive designs, but there are also modifications here:

  • AT09 Normal - maximum power 66 KW (90 hp)
  • AT09 Alaska - maximum power 100 KW (136 hp)
  • AT09 Artic - maximum power up to 180 KW (240 hp)
The difference in the cost of these modifications is also very noticeable.

BUT!

These gearboxes have one common feature - they can guarantee a stable pressure of no more than 20,000 km, after which their work cannot be called stable. Naturally, the control unit provides for the correction of this parameter, but failures are simply inevitable. In addition, these gearboxes are often unstable and attract only low cost.

Now about gas nozzles.

Nozzles are the most critical component of HBO. Unfortunately, 80% of specialists involved in the installation of HBO do not look into the tables of equipment manufacturers, which clearly indicate which gas nozzles should be equipped with a particular brand of car. Most do not even know about the existence of such tables. Their main goal is to supply cheaper, "universal" injectors!

Important!

When installing gas on cars of Korean, Japanese production, the injection time of gasoline injectors is about 1.8-2 milliseconds (in some modes), and the currently popular Valtek Type 30 injectors start working only from 3.5 ms. As a result, in such modes they are in the open state. Therefore, what kind of savings, power and fuel consumption reduction can we talk about? The result is a huge expense, the “CHECK” light is on, the car “twitches”, stalls. There is another important parameter that most simply do not know or do not think about. The cheapest injectors that are assembled are disassembled many times, the spread in the volume of gas supplied to the cylinders reaches 20%. In this case, the stroke of the rod is the same! Units have a stand capable of measuring this volume. Therefore, it is impossible to correctly adjust the engine with cheap nozzles!

To understand the price range:

  • price for 4 cylinders Valtek Type 30 - 2000 rubles;
  • price for 4 AEB cylinders - 3500 rubles (in our opinion, one of the best injectors);
  • price for 4 HANA cylinders (South Korean high-speed injectors) - 4500 rubles (price without mounting rail).
It turns out everything is sad, but fair: what you paid for, you got.

BUT! To save on tires, you don’t put on “stowaways” (small spare wheels designed to get to the nearest tire service)?

It turns out that installers use the lack of relevant competence!

A little about security.

The multivalve located in the cylinder is directly responsible for the safety of HBO. Multivalves come in three classes B, A and A Europe. Its functions include refueling, gas supply to the reducer! It is invisible, so many do not know about its existence! We received offers from suppliers of "budget HBO", the cost of which started at 1,000 rubles (class B), while the safest and most reliable multivalve of class A Europe costs about 3,000 thousand rubles! The difference, as they say, on the face!

Best multivalves BRC or TOMASETTO (Europe class 2) with fire damper, shut-off solenoid valve, electronic fuel gauge and emergency valve.

Among responsible installers, multivalves of Italian production TOMASETTO or Lovato class A are very popular. Their cost is 1500-2000 thousand rubles.
