Yokohama Ice Guard IG65 - complete safety on winter roads

Winter tires Yokohama Ice Guard IG65, designed by the engineers of the Japanese tire holding, recently debuted on the world market (in March 2017). During the tests that were carried out during the development stage of this model, the product demonstrated impressive performance, handling and dynamism on slippery roads. Thanks to the special tread design, the rubber provides safe braking on snow, confidently holds the road in sharp turns, and instantly responds to steering commands.

Design and function of tread elements

The tread of the Yokohama Ice Guard IG65 winter tire consists of the following elements:

  • The central rib with sawtooth contours is responsible for stabilizing the movement and increasing directional stability on a straight road, and reduces acceleration time.

  • The spikes, the bases of which are cut deep into the internal structure of the compound, provide reliable protection against slipping and wheel slip on asphalt covered with ice crust.
  • Interlocking stepped sipes enhance traction and help you navigate safely on roads that are covered with a layer of snow.
  • Shoulder blocks with sharp edges increase traction on snow and ice, crashing into slippery surfaces. They also prevent uncontrolled wheel slip when manoeuvring.

  • Wedge-shaped drainage grooves remove mud and snow from under the wheels, preventing the tires from losing traction on wet surfaces.

Adapted rubber compound

To adapt the tire to the conditions of sudden temperature changes and enhance grip on snowy surfaces, the developers increased the concentration of silica and silicon additives in the rubber compound. Due to the increased content of these ingredients, the compound remains resilient and elastic even in severe cold weather, when cheaper economy class tires begin to “stone” and lose their flexibility.

Environmental Compliance

The components that make up the rubber have a natural basis and do not pose the slightest danger to the environment. The environmental friendliness of tires is also due to the fact that the car consumes less fuel with them, since the surface of the tread elements has rather low rolling resistance. Consequently, when driving, the car will pollute the surrounding air with exhaust gases to a lesser extent, which may contain toxic substances.

The Yokohama iceGuard Stud iG65 studded winter tire is designed for a wide range of premium cars and crossovers. The use of advanced technologies of Japanese engineers and technologists in the iceGuard Stud iG65 model significantly improved the performance of the tire on ice. The Yokohama iceGuard Stud iG65 tire guarantees an excellent balance of performance on all types of winter roads.

A new type of stud with a wide polygon core provides improved traction in all directions. Thanks to its optimized positioning and increased number of studs, the iG65 offers improved traction and short braking distances on ice. The polygonal base holds the stud firmly in place to prevent premature loss.

The Yokohama iceGuard Stud iG65 uses a directional tread pattern with silica and orange oil. Optimal alignment of intersecting oblique, wide lateral and zigzag grooves improves tire performance on icy, snowy and wet roads. The combination of self-locking 2D and 3D sipes provided the tread with additional grip edges without losing block rigidity.

Pavel about the Yokohama Ice Guard IG65 tire

The longitudinal rib in the central part reminds me of a fish, why my wife and I are kidding - it's time to change shoes for the saw or it's too early. It's not too early, I ran for three weeks on the novelty of last season. This is the second season, it is not yet rich in ice and snow, and I tell you how the first one went. And it fell on bare ice, and in snow porridge, and in puddles at the end of the season. What can I say, Yokohama knows his business and the engineers, designing the drawing and taking into account all the components of the product, do not eat their bread in vain, because the control of the machine pleases me. I feel comfortable and drive confidently, without straining in anticipation of kicks from a car on rubber, and earlier winter was a difficult period, because the car ran on native Russian rubber, that’s all, I won’t buy a rubber product developed by our specialists. Only Yokahama, although not the cheapest.

I used to ride the IG55, because it was taken out of production, I decided to test the IG65. In principle, the old model suited me completely, but with the IG65 it became clear that there is no limit to perfection) Take it, you won't regret it!

Nikita about the Yokohama Ice Guard IG65 tire

Put the wheels at the first cold snap. There was no snow. The first 200-300 km on dry pavement were terrifying! At a speed slightly above 40 - as if you were driving a caterpillar tractor! I had a headache at 100 km/h. (well, maybe the head is like that, more from frustration, probably)

Then this sound began to go to higher speeds.

Now - after 2000 km - the sound has returned to normal. Yes, he is, but very normal, My head doesn't hurt!) I don't notice anymore. And when there is snow on the road - generally silence.

Rubber is comfortable. The suspension on the Tiguan of the second generation is stiff. This tire absorbs road bumps very well. Spikes in place. And they are very felt above the level of rubber.

I like this IG65. I advise. But immediately after installation, do not be discouraged - the noise will go away.

Eugene about the Yokohama Ice Guard IG65 tire

I took tires Yokohama Ice Guard Ig65 205? 55 r16. Prior to that, for 12 years I rode in the winter only on winter Gislaveds. Nord Frost 5 was out for 4 seasons, after the third season there were practically no spikes left and it was decided to try something new. Ice Guard IG65 is just a novelty of 2017 and attracted my attention with the price and design of the tire. In addition, my summer tires of this company adequately departed for 4 years. October 29, 2018 tires were installed. At the time of writing this review, it has covered 2900 km. After running in about 800 km, it was tested on dry pavement, wet track, on ice, and also on snow. Impressions from operation... Unlike the Gislaved, I am pleased with the absence of a rumble at a speed of about 90 km/h. The noise of spikes in the cabin is not audible at all. Someone wrote that they behave badly up to their knees ... I drove in the rain and in the snow and in porridge ... Those who live in St. Petersburg and drive along the Vyborg highway know what a deep rut is there in the left lane near Aspen Grove . Rubber behaved with dignity .. The car does not leave anywhere. As for driving in the snow, it also keeps the road well, the car does not lead into a skid when cornering, although several times I specifically tried to drive the car into a skid. And as for deep snow... The tread pattern is not for off-road, of course... But so far it has never got stuck. Boxing, but rowing and pulling ... I don’t regret buying a few. While all the spikes are in place. After the end of the winter season, it will be clear what the quality of the studding is, but now all the studs are in place and perform their functions perfectly!

Vadim about the Yokohama Ice Guard IG65 tire

I didn’t drive much, but I’ll say right away that they are very soft, they work out bumps well, the handling is excellent on the track, there are no problems on ice, the only thing missing when leaving the track is a more developed shoulder zone, in general, I’m satisfied, very decent tires.

Mishan about the Yokohama Ice Guard IG65 tire

This is the biggest disappointment I have ever experienced. After watching video reviews and vaunted articles by bloggers, I bought this samurai. Before that, there was a BU hack 7 and you know, I was more satisfied and calm about the behavior of my car. Mokka has everything good with coursework, but I don’t work on this rubber with lamellas at all: the snow just sticks to the surface, a sliding effect is obtained. It pissed me off. On dry pavement, it is not comfortable, it does not make much noise, but in terms of grip - a cow on ice. In general, it is not clear what element for her. After such rubber, I really wanted to, and at least Carmoron Velcro for 20 rubles than this one for 35. During the winter, I lost 1 spike.

Alexander about the Yokohama Ice Guard IG65 tire

Normal tires. Excellent braking and acceleration. The road is kept normally, the esp is silent. Not expensive. The only thing seems small when they stood in the window next to the tires of other brands. For me, it’s not noisy :) a normal Shumkov car at the factory was not stolen as they steal on Korean and Japanese cars. Definitely better and safer than friction. I recommend.
