Russian prices for Orlando have not yet been announced. The Orlando is based on the platform from the Cruze, but the monocab is still larger than the sedan. The increase in length is about 12 cm, but at the same time, outwardly, the car looks much larger than the Cruze. And in general, there is something unusual in the design of Orlando for single-volume vehicles. “Many of the European MPVs are very functional monocabs. But Orlando is a little different. It features a two-box body that shares features of conventional MPVs and SUVs, allowing Orlando to go beyond existing body classifications,” said Tevan Kim, vice president of design at GM DAT. And he is absolutely right - from a distance, the Chevrolet Orlando really looks like a crossover, although the ground clearance here is the same as that of the Cruze. And this move can work, especially if the car is "shod" in 18-inch rims, which come as an option (16- or 17-inch in the base). Although personally I would refuse 18-inch wheels. They look, of course, impressive, but they do not add smoothness. In this case, the car, which claims to be a family car, turns out to be very tough and accurately informs about the passage of joints and small holes, even on smooth Spanish tracks.

The 16-inch Orlando wheels are softer, so I would go with them. With them, smoothness becomes a little better (although there are complaints about comfort here too), and handling does not suffer too much. True, we will not make a verdict in advance about comfort. After all, for sure, for our market, the characteristics of the chassis will be revised.

The average fuel consumption of a 1.8-liter gasoline unit in the combined cycle is 7.3 liters per 100 km. The Orlando 1.8 has a top speed of 185 km/h and a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 11.6 seconds. Diesel spends 6.0 liters for every 100 km. The maximum speed of the 163-horsepower car is 195 km/h, the acceleration time 0-100 km/h takes 10 seconds

But the 1.8-liter gasoline engine will remain the same: 141 hp, 176 N m. Only instead of Euro-5 we will have Euro-4, but this will not change the nature of the power unit. We know this - this unit is put on the Cruze assembled in St. Petersburg. Average motor. It seems to be enough for a confident ride, but at the same time there is a feeling of some understatement. It's as if the engine has an "untouchable" supply of a dozen horsepower. As a result, for a relatively dynamic ride, the motor has to spin up to 4000 “revs” or more, but even after this “explosion” does not occur. Although the sound in the cabin at the same time is as if we are "burning all the money."

2.0-liter diesel with 163 hp and a torque of 360 Nm is good (there is another option with 130 hp and 315 Nm). Compared to the 1.8-liter petrol engine, it just looks a cut better. Or maybe two. There is already a power reserve here, the engine allows you to accelerate sharply if necessary, besides, the diesel engine works in the medium speed zone ... quieter than the gasoline engine. And it is more economical and can be equipped with a good six-speed automatic transmission. The latter works smoothly and without much delay (it is not clear why, but the gasoline Orlando has only “mechanics”, but for sure an automatic transmission will appear in Russia - after all, the Cruze 1.8 is equipped with an “automatic”). And now the most important thing. Representatives of Chevrolet said that the 2.0-liter diesel will be sold in Russia! This is very good news - I would choose it, especially since there are not so many diesels offered in the segment of mid-size seven-seat single-capacity diesels.

But we somehow forgot about the salon. But there is something very interesting there. No, we are not talking about the third row of seats, which can be folded with one movement of the hand (you can fold the second row, and also without effort - then you get a large and flat area where you can sleep if you wish). And not even that, thanks to the adjustment of the angle of inclination of the backrest of the second row, not the smallest men can sit relatively tolerably on the third row.

The main "feature" of the cabin is the "head" of the audio system - it can ... recline. As a result, we have an excellent capacity for small items. You simply can’t imagine a better place to store a stash, especially if the wife does not know that the radio has a “double bottom”.

As for everything else, here Orlando did not disappoint. Previously, it seemed to me that the interior of this car would exactly copy the Cruze. But Chevrolet decided not to save on the work of designers. Of course, everything is done in approximately the same style, but at the same time, the insides of Orlando turned out to be more “serious”. It was not possible to find any problems with ergonomics. Unless the seats on the “base” car have insufficient lateral support, although the optional leather-trimmed seats are already quite good. But otherwise, everything is as it should be. Koreans (and Orlando was developed in Korea) have learned how to create not the most memorable, but very comfortable salons.

So, what conclusion can be drawn after testing the new Chevrolet Orlando? This is a good car that has a very interesting appearance and decent equipment (already in the database there will be almost everything that drivers require from a “decent” foreign car, including “condo”, six pillows, “music” and so on). Of course, she has flaws. Some competitors have better ride and noise isolation, and they have more interesting engines. However, let's not forget about the price. Orlando should become noticeably cheaper than its rivals (we recall that we are guided by 700,000 rubles for a car with a 141-horsepower engine). And this factor alone guarantees him success in Russia. After all, car buyers who have three or more children are simply forced to count money. So let's take a close look at our competitors.

What is the price?

You won’t have to look for the reason for Orlando’s popularity for a long time - just look at the price tag: an impressive compact van with a 7-seater saloon starts at 719,000 rubles. Total! At the same time, you will not find a catch in the equipment of the basic version - at least at first glance: there is a full power package, a radio tape recorder, a quartet of airbags, central locking and heated front seats. There are even such nice little things as a rear armrest with cup holders and an eyeglass case! But the cheapest car does not have air conditioning. It can be ordered separately, but it costs decently - 36,000 rubles.

And here it already turns out that if you buy Orlando not with the last money, then the LS version will be much more profitable.

First, it has air conditioning. Second, the remaining $45,000 is for burglar alarms, fog lights, and a host of interior upgrades, as well as much-needed window airbags, ESP, and seat belt pretensioners for the family car. And finally, thirdly: LS is the most affordable equipment that can be supplemented with an automatic transmission.

Whether to stop there or prefer the third version of LS+ is up to you. In principle, a 20,000th surcharge for alloy wheels, climate control, a USB connector and an audio system improved by high-frequency speakers seems quite adequate. If I had chosen the Orlando as the vehicle for my family, I would have taken that option.

But the LT, which is sold exclusively with automatic transmission at a price of 899,000 rubles, no longer contains anything that a buyer of a budget van could not do without. Really useful options should only be recognized as rear parking sensors and electric folding mirrors. However, these benefits cannot be obtained separately: all configurations are rigidly fixed.

Nevertheless, within the range of 700-900 thousand, you will not be able to pick up another 7-seater car that would combine the advantages of a van and a crossover. From the point of view of functionality, only off-road vehicles of various calibers, the prices for which are 1.2-1.7 million, can be considered an alternative to Orlando. Cross-Turan" or "Nissan-Grand-Livina", which we have never sold.

And among the purebred vans, only Zafira-Family is the closest in price (from 784,900 rubles). But this is a seven-year-old model, which, moreover, is completely different from a crossover.

So it turns out that Orlando found itself in a market segment where there is no one else besides him. So his destiny is to cut coupons. It is gratifying that it is not only the price that helps Chevy to engage in such a pleasant activity.

Outside and inside

At first glance, it is noticeable that Orlando is not trying to seem extravagant and sophisticated. Chopped forms and thick posture - that's his style! Such a design can unconditionally be liked or, on the contrary, cause persistent rejection, but it is unlikely to leave anyone indifferent.

You don’t need to look closely at the Chevrolet for a long time to find such advantages in its appearance as a high roof, wide doors, thresholds that are fairly far from the ground and practical overlays made of unpainted plastic. And from the stern, the car can really be mistaken for a crossover! In addition, it is clearly visible that the Orlando's bumpers are hung high enough, so when parking at high curbs, you don't have to be particularly careful. In general, appearance is a clear plus of the car.

But inside, the crossover essence does not give itself away: it is a typical large station wagon with a tall ceiling. As befits a representative of the bus family, the Orlando cabin is light and airy. Space reigns on the second row: there is enough space in width for three adults. For more comfortable seating, the back of the sofa can be adjusted in terms of the angle of inclination. There is also enough legroom: only the passenger whose height exceeds 190 cm will prop up the front seat - and even then, provided that an equally significant individual sits in front of him.

The third row can also be called full-fledged: 91 cm separates the pillow from the ceiling - by the way, this is more than on the sofa of the Solaris sedan so popular with us. The minimum distance to the back of the sofa is 0.6 m - perhaps the best indicator among compact vans! In addition, if you put the back of the front seat a little more upright, you can free up another 4 cm of legroom.

However, if from the point of view of spaciousness, the Orlando can be considered perhaps the best of the compact vans, then in terms of the level of outdoor and domestic service, it is no more than good: tables in the backs of the seats, hiding places in the floor, removable chairs - all this is not about Chevy . However, the designers still did not forget to provide it with the obligatory attributes of family cars: the Orlando provides a lot of cup holders, comfortable armrests, coat hooks and even 12-volt sockets on all three rows of seats.

We load suitcases

As you might guess, in the struggle for space in the cabin, the trunk was the first to suffer: only a couple of small handbags can fit behind the backs of the third row. However, a similar sin is found in many 7-seater cars.

But if at least one of the six seats is folded to the floor (it is enough to pull the grippy handle on the back), the Orlando will provide a hold comparable in volume to the trunk of a regular golf class hatchback. Unless, for a more reliable fastening of goods, you will have to buy rigging nets: there was no place for them in the staffing table.

It is logical that as the number of passengers decreases, the trunk will increase in useful volume. And if in a standard 5-seater configuration the car provides 466 liters for luggage, then by folding both rows of seats, we get an almost 1.5-cc van.

Moreover, at the beginning of next year, the cargo capacity of the machine will be even more obvious: a version with a folding backrest of the right front seat will be launched on the market, in which it will be possible to carry long items up to 2.7 m long.

The only pity is that the engineers placed the trunk curtain too low: large suitcases will hide under it only flat. In addition, the high threshold of the hold should also be attributed to the minuses.

Again, compact vans, like crossovers, often captivate with a high driving position. Orlando is no exception. Drivers who prefer to sit on the very top will certainly appreciate the large (within seven centimeters) range of seat height adjustment. The steering column has a full range of adjustments; and the steering wheel itself of the optimal diameter is rich in comfortable tides in the grip area. In general, a person of any height and physique can comfortably get a job in a Chevy.

True, in general, the ergonomics of the Orlando is still not perfect. "Mechanics" makes you get used to the long strokes of the lever; and when manipulating the mirror adjustment joystick, which has a vertical orientation, you have to bend your arm unnaturally. Like many other vans, Orlando has a large glazing area, but behind a high window sill line, even significant objects can go unnoticed.

Finally, the most obvious ergonomic miscalculation should be recognized as a too sophisticated on-board computer control algorithm: information that can be obtained on many machines with a couple of clicks on a single button, you get in Orlando by rotating the wheel and trampling the keys located on the right steering column lever . And if the situation with fuel consumption or power reserve is even more or less clear, then for the interpretation of inscriptions like "Unit set" or "Code" you have to refer to the instruction manual, which explains that we are talking, it turns out, about units of measurement or malfunctions in various systems.

The box switches softly and insinuatingly, but for automatic convenience you will have to pay with temperament, accustoming yourself to drive extremely slowly.
