In 2001, the L13A engine was released, especially for Honda cars of the most modest sizes. This motor replaced the D13 and D14 series engines. Honda L13 entered the L series, which also has a 1.2-liter L12 and a 1.5-liter L15.
The cylinder block of this engine is aluminum with thin liners. This is a long-stroke engine with an 80 mm crankshaft, while the cylinder diameter is only 73 mm. Its working volume is only 1.33 liters, which is quite normal for small cars.

The cylinder block was covered with a wide variety of heads: 8-valve SOHC i-DSI, 16-valve i-VTEC, 16-valve DOHC. Descriptions of all these versions can be found below, where data is also available for the 1.33-litre hybrid engines.

The L13A uses a timing chain that is fairly reliable and usually doesn't cause problems.
For L13A engines, valve adjustment is provided every 45 thousand km. Clearances on a cold engine: inlet 0.15-0.19 mm, outlet 0.26-0.3 mm.

Honda L13 engine modifications

1. L13A i-DSI - dual ignition engine with 2 spark plugs per cylinder and 8 ignition coils. It was developed with the aim of reducing fuel consumption, increasing low-end torque and improving environmental performance. Cylinder head SOHC 8 valves, compression ratio 10.8, power 86 hp at 5700 rpm, torque 119 Nm at 2800 rpm. The motor was used on Honda Civic 7 and 8, City, Fit and Jazz.
2. L13A i-VTEC - engine with SOHC head 16 valves, compression ratio 10.5, power 99 hp at 6000 rpm, and a torque of 127 Nm at 4800 rpm. Found on Honda Fit and Civic.
3. L13B - 16 valve DOHC twin-shaft head engine. The compression ratio is increased to 13.5 and the engine runs on the Atkinson cycle. Its output reached 99 hp. at 6000 rpm, and a torque of 127 Nm at 4800 rpm.
4. LDA - engine for 7th generation Civic Hybrid and 2nd generation Insight. This is an 8 valve single shaft L13A i-DSI with an i-VTEC system that can turn off 3 cylinders during braking. 5. LDA2 is the engine for the 8th generation Honda Civic Hybrid. The petrol engine was modified and received a 3-speed i-VTEC, which made it possible to obtain 95 hp. at 6000 rpm. There is also an i-DSI and VCM system, the latter can turn off all 4 cylinders, leaving only the electric motor. The electric motor itself has been improved, its power has increased to 20 hp. The L-series was born at a difficult time for Honda. It was originally conceived as a fundamentally new engine for a new car - the Honda Fit, the rates for which were higher than ever. At the turn of the millennium, Honda found itself in some kind of stagnation - the old cars were so structurally perfect that it was impossible to surpass themselves from a technical point of view. However, according to market research, Honda was losing market - buyers were eager for updates that competitors were intensively offering them. Projects of the late 90s turned out to be a failure against the backdrop of products from Toyota, Nissan, and even Mazda began to dangerously approach sales. Honda literally "left" due to such hits as the first generation CR-V, Civic EK and H-RV, while competitors "riveted" new models, forcing Honda out of its native subcompact segment.

Under these conditions, a fundamentally new device appeared on the already proven G-platform - a descendant of light cars, such as City or less popular, but extremely reliable Logo - Honda Fit. The developers, in addition to an attractive appearance, as well as ideal performance for that time, had the task of creating a motor that could be compared in terms of reliability and ease of use with the legendary D-series, which by this time had already become morally obsolete. The first version of the L-series, the L13A, became such an engine.

When developing it, Honda applied many unusual solutions. To begin with, she placed the engine on the right side in the direction of travel, and now it began to rotate clockwise.

The second decision was the transition from a belt drive to a chain. This greatly reduced the need to break into the engine every 100,000 km to change the belt. The chain could run 200,000, and in some cases longer.

The third solution was the appearance of eight spark plugs in the engine, against the usual four. Such a design, with the appropriate setting of the “brains”, allowed the Fita motor to drive everything that could burn, and also ensured that the engine was started in the most extreme conditions. In addition, fuel consumption in such a car decreased to "bird's-eye". Thanks to two candles in the cylinder, the engine could run on an extra-lean mixture without problems.

As for the "driving" qualities, then the motor turned out to be excellent. Thanks to all the same 8 candles, as well as competent engine geometry, Fit could well compete with any “classmate” up to 1.5 liters in volume. Of course, the motor was small, and on long straights it lost to more voluminous rivals, but due to the compactness of the car itself, it was more than enough for brisk movement in city traffic.

After the triumphant release of Fit, Honda thought about refining the engine itself for heavier cars. This is how a whole class of “phyte-like” devices built on its platform appeared, such as Airwave, Mobilio, Mobilio Spike. All of them were united by the fact that they were heavier than the “original source”, therefore they required a motor at least larger in volume. This is how the L15A version appeared - the same engine, only one and a half liter.

L15A initially almost did not differ from L13A - the same lineup, the same 8 spark plugs. Over time, an "upgrade" version appeared with the iVTEC system. The number of candles was reduced to the standard, but the candles themselves became iridium (improved spark, longer service life), and there was also space for VTEC cams on the camshaft - before that, candles interfered. The new motor received 20 hp. more than a 1.3-liter, and the total "herd" began to equal 110. These motors for a long time took place under the hoods of Hondas up to the size of the Civic. It is worth saying that various modifications of L-motors are produced to this day (2013) and so far no replacement is expected. The most modern L-series has already got rid of 8 spark plugs, and also received a VTEC system even in a 1.3 engine

Design reliability.

Unlike another series, "born" in the same years - the K-series - L-motors turned out to be extremely unpretentious to all operating conditions.

Once in the vast Russian expanses, these engines over the years of operation in harsh conditions experienced all the "charms" of the disgusting attitude towards the technology of our compatriots, and nevertheless remained alive. So, for example, Fits, designed like any “chain” motor, for liquid motor oil, for a long time were “fed” by caring users with the highest viscosity oils of the 40th and 50th series. And yet, it did not carry any serious consequences. The motors survived.

The only weak point of the L-series in the conditions of Russia was the ignition system. Many masters (car enthusiasts do not even count, they are not required to know this) simply did not know about the existence of the second row of spark plugs on L-motors, changing only the front candles. Over time, this led to worn out rear spark plugs and failed ignition coils, costing over $100 each. If the situation was not at all in favor of the motorist, then simple inattention turned into expenses of the order of $500 (for four coils) out of the blue.

In addition, the engine, designed to use good gasoline, and having the appropriate settings for the "fuel card", suffered greatly from the untimely replacement of candles in general. Fitovods, who take care of their cars, changed the spark plugs more often than the scheduled intervals, and, as a rule, had no problems. While the owners adhering to the manual, or even a little “forgetting” to change the candles on time, could well “come” to replace one or more ignition coils.

The L-series simply had no more weak points.

If we talk about the maintainability of the engine, then it is somewhat lubricated by two things - an ever-interfering intake manifold that covers the entire engine, and an extremely small engine compartment of phyto-like machines. If removing and putting on the “inlet” is quite simple and quick for a trained person (by the way, it is removed and put quietly several times before gaskets are required), then work in a narrow space often requires a special tool, as well as hands with a “reverse bend” . For example, the replacement of the rear row of spark plugs is carried out only with a shortened key. The standard key just does not fit in length! Other operations also require at least a homemade special tool, since conventional keys do not allow normal operation unless two-thirds of the engine compartment is disassembled. But, if you overcome these difficulties, the engine is quite maintainable, especially when you consider that it needs serious repairs very infrequently.

Subtleties in service.

There are practically no difficulties in caring for the L-series. If you change engine oil in time (0w20 or 5w20), and, most importantly, spark plugs (we recommend an interval of 20,000 -25,000 km), then there will be no problems with these motors.

Although the L-series is not in the first place in terms of ease of repair, all the technical solutions of this motor have a sufficient margin of safety to withstand various maintenance flaws.

Ability to tune.

The L-series of engines does not have an independent tuning ability as such. Despite the excellent reliability indicators, the L-motor is structurally dead-end for tuning. With 8 spark plugs, any modifications are impossible, simply because there is simply no place in the cylinder head (the main object for tuning in other engines). If we talk about the L15, then there are a little more opportunities, but still they rest on the compactness of the placement of all parts and the ecological “bridles” thrown over each element. What can I say if the company Mugen, which specializes in the refinement of Honda units, was able to offer the most effective solution for this series in the form of a miniature turbo kit.

The object of desire of the most advanced phyto-breeders are Fits with a replaced engine on the K20A, an engine with a completely different torque and a different herd of “horses”. But very few decide on such a swap, and more often than not, plans for "Fit on K20" remain plans. Very few people can find all the necessary components, and most importantly, a master who will competently carry out this operation.
