We celebrate the anniversary of UAZ with a trip on a Patriot with an Iveco diesel engine. Iveco engine repair

02.07.2020

UAZ has an anniversary: exactly 70 years ago, in the early autumn of 1941, the Stalin Automobile Plant was evacuated from Moscow to Ulyanovsk. The Ulyanovsk residents offered to celebrate their anniversary on the western coast of Lake Baikal - a trip on Patriots with Iveco diesel engines, which will also very soon become part of the factory's history.

It would be desirable, that on the contrary - the end of the beginning.

Which of the inhabitants of the Russian outback has not dreamed of a diesel UAZ? At various times, the “goat” was matched by units of Russian, Italian, Austrian, German, Japanese, Polish and even Chinese origin. But imported heavy-fuel engines were expensive, and domestic ones were unreliable. However, the villagers spoke well of the Polish Andoria turbodiesel (AR No. 10, 2005), which was serially installed on the Hunter: they loved the engine for its simplicity, maintainability and “omnivorousness”. Well, the UAZ with the Toyota 1 KZ-TE diesel engine was reputed to be the most successful third-party alteration - the most power-armed in the “herd”.

Since August 2008, the UAZ decided to switch to Italian Iveco F1A diesel engines - the same ones that are installed on Fiat Ducato commercial vehicles assembled by Sollers. The UAZ Patriot SUVs equipped with them have already sold seven thousand copies (5 times more gasoline cars have been sold), but I have only just managed to fully drive a diesel Patriot.

I was ready to listen to the shaman of Priolkhonye Valentin Khagdaev for hours: the stories of this man are similar to a lesson in local history, which is taught by a good and enthusiastic teacher. But as soon as colleagues asked Valentin to predict something or read by hand, I tactfully stepped aside

The Ulyanovsk residents chose a noble place for the anniversary rides: roads of such quality stretch to the east of Irkutsk that after a couple of tens of kilometers, not only "children's", but also chronic diseases crawl out near the car. Passengers, by the way, too!

Having decided to take a break from the unbearable shaking, I stop at the end of the dusty primer, open the door - and raise my thumb up: the door seals on the Patriots have finally learned how to put them right! The rubber bands now do not “chew” in the openings and effectively seal the joints (leakage of the Patriot body, I remember, greatly annoyed during the Aral trip - AR No. 17, 2009). Having thoroughly “dubbed” the grader, he noted that the tailgate stopped knocking, the cup holder no longer “shoots” on bumps, and the plastic “fangs” of the rear bumper do not fall off from vibration. But the rattle of the steering shaft hinges on a car with a range of 5000 km is embarrassment. Especially after the plant's statement about tightening control over the quality of third-party components.

Look at what "shoes" the Irkutsk dealers of UAZ "shod" the Patriots in! On Taiwanese Maxxis Buckshot Mudder tires, the UAZ looks like a real macho - and cheerfully jumps over sharp stones (for 700 km I cut only one sidewall - a good result), effectively ripping up dense sand and balancing well in high-speed dirt turns. However, in the mud, the car became like a village drunk, wandering home with an amplitude from fence to fence: a couple of times at the exit from a harmless turn, I almost leaned sideways against a roadside birch.

There are a lot of sharp stones in the steppes stretching along the western coast of Lake Baikal. A little yawned - get the jack!

The generator on the new ZMZ-51432 engine is fixed 129 mm higher than on the Iveco diesel engine. God forbid that this was not the only advantage of the Zavolzhsky motor

What's happening? I stop on a dry patch, turn the front wheels all the way and start to examine the tread. By God, the ancient petroglyphs on the Baikal cliff Sagan-Zaba were easier to decipher! It seems that the “checkers” are correct, and the lamellas are wide. There are even side lugs. And there is no "hold"! On harmless gentle slopes, the car immediately broke down the slope and completely refused to get out of the rut.

External speed characteristics of the Iveco F1A engine

The Iveco F1A engine was developed by FIAT's Powertrain Technologies division. It is this engine that is installed on the editorial truck Fiat Ducato, which is currently undergoing a resource test at the Dmitrovsky auto test site

In general, fashionable “sneakers” on Russian off-road will have to be changed to something more practical. The diesel Patriot needs a more intimate accessory. The fact is that due to the layout features of the motor, the depth of the ford to be overcome on this machine is set not by a cooling system fan or an air intake pipe, but by a low-hanging generator: when our cars drove into the water, the instructors were preparing for the worst. If the red charging lamp lights up in the instrument cluster, then you can prepare for spending the night in the forest - we won’t reach the base on one battery. The only thing that can be done before overcoming deep fords is to put a protective "muzzle" on the generator from a plastic bottle.

Really for three years of production this problem could not be solved? After all, there is a stage of finishing tests!

I did not expect a special agility from the 116-horsepower Iveco diesel engine - there was none. Of course, against the background of its competitors, the Italian motor looks quite quiet and does not annoy with vibrations - there is no annoying itch on any of the controls. But when driving off-road... No, diesel is not weak - it's just uncomfortable. If on commercial vehicles like the Ducato the power unit operates mainly in static load mode, then when driving off-road, traction must be dosed, and dosed accurately. The left edge of the torque curve of the Italian diesel is flat, and, moving at low speeds (even with the demultiplier on), it is difficult to understand whether the engine is in the turbo lag or is already ready to deliver the declared 270 Nm. It would be a little bit to increase the gear ratio of the main gear - but then the Patriot will become uncomfortable on the pavement, because its engine, when overtaking, already works with twisting.

To get on wheels to the recreation center "Pearl of Baikal", located near the village of Bolshoye Goloustnoye, is possible only along the coastline. And only at low water

To see Baikal, it is not enough to come to it: you also need to bring good weather with you. We brought!

On the move, the diesel Patriot is able to overcome almost any muddy area. But where careful maneuvering is required, the unacceptably low traction of Maxxis Buckshot Mudder tires immediately makes itself felt.

The way out is to conjure with an electronic gas pedal. That is, adjust the rheostat setting in such a way that in the low-speed zone the engine reacts more cheerfully to an increase in fuel supply. And it’s better to do it not mathematically, but expertly: for example, with the help of Buryat shamans, because the cultists of the island of Olkhon are able to penetrate into someone else’s consciousness and even predict the future - at least that’s what my colleagues who talked with one of the mediums claimed.

But, alas, the UAZ people will not be engaged in either setting up the accelerator or protecting the generator from moisture. I can predict the future of Italian diesel engines even without shamans - and my Tuvan experience with shamanism (AR No. 17, 2011) has nothing to do with it. Since Sollers has just “divorced” FIAT, Iveco diesels will no longer be installed on UAZs - and in the very near future, a Russian engine, the Zavolzhsky ZMZ-51432, will appear under the hood of the Patriot. Hearing this name, "goat breeders" with experience startle in fright, because the old "five hundred and fourteenth" diesel spoiled them so much blood that it was cursed even by repairmen. The Patriots will be equipped with an updated version of it, equipped with a common rail power system and meeting the Euro 4 environmental class. According to the declared characteristics, the Euro-ZMZ is very close to the Iveco engine, however, recalling the spread of output parameters on old Zavolzhsky diesel engines, it is hard to believe in the stability of the return. In an acceptable resource too.

But the Sollers group does not share these fears: according to marketers, over the past year alone, consumer interest in the diesel program has grown by 35%, and they are sure that ZMZ-51432 will find demand. And the Ulyanovsk Patriot is also waiting for serious interior changes, so 2012 for this car will most likely become the frontier of a generational change.

Echoes of war

Igor VLADIMIRSKY

Already in the first months of the Great Patriotic War, strategically important factories began to be evacuated from the western regions of the country. In October, the threat of capture loomed over Moscow, it was decided to urgently relocate the capital's enterprises, among which one of the largest was ZIS (named after Stalin). In addition to cars, they produced ammunition, equipment for the production of weapons, as well as forgings and castings for aircraft and tank factories.

Four sites were chosen for the evacuation of the ZIS - in Shadrinsk (the future SHAAZ), Troitsk, Miass (the future UralAZ) and in Ulyanovsk. In total, 12,800 pieces of equipment were taken out of the plant to the rear - dispatch went around the clock, and unloading on the ground was carried out mainly manually using wooden rollers, cables and ropes.

Ulyanovsk was then a small (population - 105 thousand people) regional center of the Kuibyshev region, so most of the workers were transported from Moscow - a total of 90 thousand people came to Ulyanovsk, including women and children. They built the plant in an open field, and at first, until a diesel power plant and a boiler room were installed, electricity was provided by a diesel-electric train, and pipes were adapted to heat the shops, through which steam from decommissioned steam locomotives flowed.

The new plant was named UlZIS - in February 1942, the production of ammunition began here, and in March a tool shop was launched. The assembly of ZIS-5 trucks from previously imported Moscow components was mastered in May 1942, and the supply of power units from Miass was delayed, so the first cars left the wooden stocks without motors and gearboxes. The main assembly line was launched in October - up to 60 trucks could leave it per day. At the same time, the acquisition of other workshops was also completed. Think about it - from the moment the plant was laid down to the start of the rhythmic production of cars, only a year has passed! According to the laws of war.

Almost immediately, work began in Ulyanovsk on the creation of a new generation diesel truck, several prototypes were even made, but subsequently all the developments on the car "left" to the ZIS. Another interesting fact: at the end of 1943, UlZIS assembled several hundred Studebaker trucks that arrived from the USA under Lend-Lease. And in February 1944, the construction of the plant in Miass was fully completed, and it was decided to transfer the assembly of ZISs beyond the Urals.

The first production of the plant is the ZIS-5 truck and its simplified version ZIS-5V with a wooden cabin (pictured). From May 1942 to February 1944, more than 10 thousand three-ton tanks were made in Ulyanovsk

The transfer of the production of one and a half GAZ-AA vehicles from Gorky to Ulyanovsk began in the fall of 1945, and two years later, mass production of these vehicles began with a gradual increase in the share of components of our own production.

After the war, it was decided to load the idle capacities with the release of the GAZ-AA lorry, much needed for the country - this decision forever predetermined the relationship of Ulyanovsk cars with GAZ products. The first gas trucks rolled off the assembly line in October 1947. And seven years later, passenger cars also joined the trucks - at the end of 1954, the assembly of GAZ-69 off-road vehicles began. At the same time, the department of the chief designer was finally created at the plant - it was time to design their own models under the UAZ brand.

The first-born was the famous UAZ-450 family of wagon layout, the production of which began in 1958 and continues to this day in a modernized form. Especially for "loaves" and "tadpoles", a new body stamping shop was erected, and in the summer of 1962, to reduce labor intensity, a unique multi-level assembly line was launched, which was not at that time at any automobile plant in the USSR - and which still works today.

Nine thousand workers produced 55 thousand SUVs and trucks, and the net profit amounted to 1 billion 370 million rubles. The plan for this year is 57 thousand cars.

The production of GAZ-69 and 69A SUVs in Ulyanovsk began in 1954. With minor changes, the cars lasted 19 years on the assembly line - a total of 597 thousand cars were produced with a lower engine from Pobeda (2.1 l, 52 hp) and a three-speed gearbox

Trucks and powertrains from the automotive manufacturer Iveco currently occupy a leading position in Europe. The engines of this brand have long established themselves as reliable products, with an optimal combination of price and quality.

The Patriot's need for a diesel engine was clear from the car's debut in 2005. Over the years of the production of Patrick, they tried to “marry” both ZMZ diesels and Andoria, but somehow it didn’t work out. owning, among other things, UAZ, entered into an agreement with the Italian company Fiat on the licensed assembly in Russia of commercial vans Fiat Ducato of the previous generation. And soon it was decided to adapt a 4-cylinder diesel engine from these machines for the Patriot. The decision, on the one hand, is political (including, apparently, with hopes for export), and on the other, it is quite logical: there is confusion with domestic engines of a suitable class, and here at hand there is already a mass engine worked out in production, and even and well known in our country. Moreover, Sollers has not yet abandoned plans for licensed production of this motor in Russia.

By design, the engine is modern, but without frills: 4 valves per cylinder, common-rail common-rail fuel system and turbocharging

As a result, in August 2008, the production of the first UAZ Patriot with the Iveco F1A diesel engine began, which, in addition to Fiat Ducato vans, can also be found under the hood of Iveco Daily commercial vehicles. By design, the engine is modern, but without frills: 4 valves per cylinder, a common-rail fuel system with a common rail and turbocharging. With a volume of 2.3 liters, the turbodiesel develops 116 hp. at 3900 rpm vs. 128 hp at 4400 rpm for the base for the Patriot gasoline engine ZMZ-409.10 with a volume of 2.7 liters. The peak torque for both engines is 2500 rpm, but for the diesel engine it is 53 Nm more: 270 Nm versus 217 for the gasoline engine.

The gearbox of the diesel Patriot remained the same: the mechanical “five-speed” of the Korean company Dymos with the German Luk clutch has changed only the mount to the engine. The fuel system with an archaic system of two tanks remained almost unchanged.

Interior

Every time I climb into the Patriot, I want to exclaim “finally!”. Finally, after so many decades, Ulyanovsk cars got a modern interior, which is nice to sit in! Spacious, light, high seating position in decently comfortable chairs is combined with excellent visibility (mirrors are wide!), bare metal does not shine anywhere, and it is a pleasure to look at the laconic instrument panel after previous factory experiments.

You no longer have to think about where to attach a bunch of travel small things - there are now enough glove compartments and pockets inside.

In the trunk, folding the second row of seats forward, you can take away at least a refrigerator for an apartment, even a concrete mixer for a summer residence.

For UAZ, such a salon is really a step forward, like the car itself. And let the Iranian company AIDCO make the same dashboard for the UAZ Patriot, the Latvian company RAR supplies the instrument cluster, and the seats are made in Russia using the technology of the Korean Daewon group. Better that way than nothing.

Although there are enough remarks. The steering column is adjustable in tilt angle over a wide range, but is fixed in only three positions. With my height of 180 cm, it is more convenient for me to put the steering wheel in the middle position, but then the steering wheel rim safely covers the instrument panel, and you no longer look at the speedometer readings, but peep. Raise the steering wheel all the way up, high, lower it all the way down - it almost lies on its feet.
This is where additional fixation positions are requested. It's time to lengthen the gearshift lever a little. And add on the instrument scale a signaling device for the end of the liquid in the glass washer reservoir. And you can also ask for not so tight levers for adjusting the steering wheel and turn signal switch? And the fact that the small handles of the adjustable air duct grilles on the instrument panel can be grasped only by the tenacious fingers of a chimpanzee - is it so conceived? And what is the sacred meaning of the fact that the "wipers" do not walk on the glass, but crawl, and even under such strained sounds, as if the drive electric motor also turns the wheels on the car along the way?

When examined under the brackets of the door locks, ... pieces of coarse-grained sandpaper were found

But all these naive claims fade against the background of individual "pearls" of Ulyanovsk design thought. So, when viewed under the brackets of the door locks, pieces of coarse-grained sandpaper were found! Maybe, as in a joke, there is a secret? No, at the factory they openly answer that they put emery for, quote, “preventing involuntary movement of the staples during operation”! Here it is, our hard-to-destroy approach to quality: put it on and wind it up instead of doing it once and for all! And here I am moaning about some knobs and buttons ... Maybe at least the Patriot is rehabilitated in the movement?

Asphalt

The key to start - and under the hood rumbled muffled. And when picking up speed, it rattled along the way in the cabin, and especially somewhere in the engine compartment.

The diesel engine itself runs smoothly and does not shake at idle, like a ZMZ gasoline engine. But the way individual parts in the cabin resonate with him at a certain moment is somewhat annoying. As if somewhere something is again not fully tightened, not isolated and unbalanced.
There are also old flaws: when accelerating and driving at low speeds, the transfer case of domestic production still “growls” and rattles.

The unhurried nature of the Ivek engine, which noticeably loses to the gasoline engine in the agility of revving, did not come as a surprise either. Up to 1900 rpm, he frankly “does not go”, then the turbine comes into play, the diesel engine cheerfully drags the car up to about 3000 rpm, and then turns sour again. In the city, this drowsiness is rather annoying, so you have to constantly keep the engine in good shape so as not to “fall asleep” in the middle of the stream. You don’t drive too much on the highway either: the maximum speed of the diesel Patriot is 135 km / h versus 150 for the gasoline version. Although, in all honesty, it doesn’t pull to drive. And not only because already at a speed of 100-110 km / h the diesel engine is already noticeably noisy, but because of the weak traction “at the top”, overtaking must be planned in advance.

The Patriot is simply not strong in high-speed asphalt disciplines, although it must be admitted that, of course, it rides on the highway better than anything that was previously produced in Ilyich's homeland. It no longer "floats" in a straight line, requires less steering and is more stable in an arc.

Rolling and soft suspension is still sharpened for off-road

But rolls in corners, although they have become smaller due to the transfer of shock absorbers closer to the wheels, still remain significant - the rolling and soft suspension is still sharpened for off-road.

Yes, and the Delphi power steering cannot boast of intelligible feedback: when turning the steering wheel, which also needs to be turned at considerable angles, the car reacts sluggishly, and you steer like through cotton wool, correcting the trajectory more with your eyes than with the feeling of the wheels.

What if you need to slow down? The Patriot has disc mechanisms at the front, drum mechanisms at the rear, and the basic equipment of the Limited package already includes the latest, eighth generation Bosch ABS, along with the EBD brake force distribution system.

In general, there are enough brakes for a heavy car, but there are a couple of features here. It feels like the brake drive has retained the feature of “pumping”, when the first time you press the brake pedal goes further and easier than the second time you press it, when the pedal is a little “dubbed” and a greater reserve of effort begins to be felt under it.

But when braking “to the floor”, the car tends to drift away from the straight line, although ABS with brake force distribution, in theory, should fight this. They are fighting as best they can, but this problem cannot be completely solved by electronics alone. It seems that there is already a question about the suspension design itself.

Of course, in Ulyanovsk, the Patriot was taught to drive on the roads better than all its predecessors. But asphalt for him still remains not a habitat, but a territory for running from one off-road section to another. And by the way, here it is...

off-road

The last meters of asphalt, uncomfortable for the Patriot, are left behind, and we are relieved to plop down on a dirt road washed out by many days of rain. Everything, the beast is at home!

The car is picked up like a cheetah released into the savannah after a walk on the ice rink

Clumsy on the highway, off-road, the car picks up like a cheetah released into the savannah after a walk on an ice rink.

Tanks do not slow down: everything will be swallowed up by dense long-travel suspension and high-profile tires

What's under the wheels? Doesn't matter. Maybe slow down in front of that hole? For what?! It's UAZ! Tanks do not slow down: everything will be swallowed up by dense long-travel suspension and high-profile tires! And for the sake of this feeling of confidence, a car can be forgiven a lot.

Well, let's go further into the fields, shall we? It is no longer necessary to get out of the car to close the locks of the axle shafts in the hubs of the front axle - they are not disconnected from the factory. We translate the one and only lever of the transfer case to the 4H position - and forward.

Iveco engine in its element

Sleepy on the pavement, here the Iveco engine is at ease. The still not really run-in diesel engine, purring busily, confidently dragged the Patriot over the muddy alumina of the construction quarry at speeds below 2000 per minute. With a gasoline engine, I would have stalled here several times already, but here the engine did not even resist driving in an increased transmission range. With the inclusion of a lower gear, things went even more fun. It was already possible not to touch the gas pedal - the Patriot confidently climbed up the sandy hill at idle ...

Patriot confidently climbed up the sandy hill at idle ...

Having climbed all the surrounding ravine fields in a few days and measured all the puddles and fords, I don’t remember ever being close to a shameful capitulation. Patriot did not shame the Fatherland and climbed everywhere! And not the last merit in this is not only the serious parameters of geometric cross-country ability, but also the tenacity of regular universal Cordiant 4x4 tires. They honestly gnawed at the ground and dragged the car forward, even when the Patriot crawled along the rut, as they say, "on bridges."

They honestly gnawed the ground and dragged the car forward ...

The transfer case did not cause any trouble either: apparently, it was nevertheless cured by the self-shutdown of the lowered row under load, with which the owners of early cars suffered.

But on the other feature of the Patriot, also manifested on the roads, it is worth dwelling separately. We're talking about ABS again. She stands guard even when switching to a lower range of gears. If the vehicle speed is 5 km/h or less, the ABS is automatically deactivated, but it is worth accelerating above this threshold and the system is reactivated. (Interestingly, at these crawling speeds, the ABS on the test car started to work with such a heartbreaking screech, as if it were not a hydraulic unit, but a box of rusty gears!) In fact, this means that if, during a snail's descent, say, along a sandy slope, you blocks the wheels, they will pile up rollers of soil in front of them, rest against them - and the car will stop.

If during a turtle descent you block the wheels, they will rake up rollers of soil in front of them

But if you slam on the brakes at speeds above 5 km/h, the tires won't dig into the ground and stop the car: the ABS will start to release the skidding wheels, and the Patriot will roll down. Keep this in mind and on the descent, either do not accelerate above 5 km / h or turn off the ABS by removing the fuse.

Conclusion

So, the Patriot + diesel tandem made a generally good impression - such an engine has long been asked for under the hood of an Ulyanovsk SUV. Yes, the Italian motor loses in dynamics on asphalt, but due to the greater torque it takes its toll on off-road. And the appetite is smaller: the passport fuel consumption of the diesel Patriot is 9.5 liters on the highway and 12.5 liters in the city versus 10.4 and 14.5 liters, respectively, for the gasoline version.

Although there are nuances. Thus, the question of the readiness of UAZ services to service and supply diesel Patriots with spare parts remains open. So far, only a little more than a thousand of them have been released, and at many maintenance stations, mechanics can look at such a car with big eyes with the question “what is it rumbles under the hood” frozen in them. As a fallback, there are still Iveco and Fiat dealers, who are familiar with this diesel. But somewhere in the outback, where there are one and a half stalls and not a single service for the whole district, the Patriot buyer will most likely prefer the ZMZ engine, which has been proven in service.

A pleasant impression of a properly conceived car is still spoiled by minor flaws

In addition, a pleasant impression of a properly conceived car is still spoiled by minor flaws in half with poor build quality and a number of components. And our patient and handmade buyer is still forced to constantly eliminate these factory "jambs" - on their own and at their own expense. I want to believe that one day we will live to see change.
Finally, about prices. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, I remember, UAZ Patriot TDi was promised by Putin with a 10 percent discount. But for us, mere mortals, such prime ministerial "preferences" do not yet shine.

Our patient and handmade customer is still forced to constantly eliminate factory "jambs" - on his own and at his own expense.

Therefore, for a diesel Patriot in the simplest Classic configuration (metallic paint and unpainted bumpers with moldings, power steering, central locking, fabric interior, iron wheel rims), you will have to honestly count 580,000 rubles. For the Comfort version (alloy wheels, body-colored bumpers and moldings, athermal windows, alarm system, CD radio, power accessories with heated mirrors, fog lights) they will ask for 620,000 rubles. In addition to the above, the top-end Limited package includes air conditioning, a winter package (heated front seats, a second stove and a high-capacity battery), trunk rails and folding benches in the trunk. And they will take as much as 687,000 rubles for it! Expensive! But even at this price, the Patriot still has no direct competitors. And this, unfortunately, greatly discourages the manufacturer ...
