History of creation

For the first time a car called Mohave was introduced in 2008. But the car “did not go overseas” - in 2011 it was removed from sales there. But they left it in other countries - for example, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan and, of course, “at home”, in South Korea.

By the way, there is no Mohave in Western Europe either - it is irrelevant there and would look like an elephant in a china shop.

In February 2016, the tapes were full of photos of the updated Mohave in camouflage. A little later, the secrets were fully revealed - and sales began.

During restyling, the body has not changed much. Yes, just light cosmetics. They didn't even touch the headlights.

The steering wheel is new and multifunctional. Dashboard - with a 4.2-inch display (in the top version). Already in the “standard” is the UVO 2.0 entertainment center with an 8-inch touch screen, factory navigation, ten speakers, AUX and USB connectors, Bluetooth support and even Apple Pay technology. "Music", by the way, is made by the eminent company JBL and sounds great.

The microclimate control unit is classic. Two rotating knobs on the edges and regular (not touch) buttons between them. Practical and comfortable.

Central box-armrest - with a lot of containers. Well, cup holders are simply scattered throughout the cabin - the Americans love it so much.

Behind - spacious (of course!), But it is especially interesting that the third row of seats is not for children, but full-fledged. Even adult passengers of average height are provided with good comfort.

Owner opinions

The owners of Kia Mohave enjoy the interior space, equipment level, reasonable price and excellent dynamics. True, not everyone likes the suspension - it is still harsh on our so-called roads, more like directions. The Koreans listened to the comments and made changes - as much as possible with a very limited budget. A new eight-speed "automatic" and a modified diesel engine made Mohave more economical, which is very important with immodest fuel prices and a curb weight of 2.3 tons. According to the passport in the city, the car "eats" 12.3 liters of diesel fuel per hundred kilometers. In practice, this figure increases markedly.

Now there is no choice - only versions with a 3.6-liter diesel engine remain on the conveyors. In South Korea, this motor develops 260 hp, but for Russia it was derated by 10 “horses”. This is due to the peculiarities of the legislation, because otherwise the owner would pay about twice as much transport tax annually.

The gearbox is only automatic, eight-speed, with a traditional torque converter, and not newfangled preselective robots - it's easier and more reliable.

Previously, there was also a version with a gasoline V-shaped six-cylinder engine with a volume of 3.0 liters and a power of 275 hp. But sales of such machines were discontinued in 2015.

Options and prices

In the native South Korean market for the Kia brand, the base price is 41 million 100 thousand won, which equals 2 million 64 thousand rubles. But the drive for this money will only be front - such versions are not offered to Russians.

But in Russia, for a brand new all-wheel drive Mohave, you will have to pay at least 2 million 420 thousand rubles.

Among the standard equipment:

  • all-round viewing system with cameras;
  • valuable wood (varieties can be chosen) and real aluminum in the finish.

And this is not a complete list.

Warranty - 5 years or 150 thousand kilometers, whichever comes first. Koreans, according to the old tradition, make a lot of exceptions, for which this period is set much less or does not exist at all.

Mohave competitors

Mohave has many rivals. Full-size crossovers and SUVs priced up to 3 million rubles in our country are offered by many manufacturers - this market segment is now popular. For example, for 2.7 million you can take a basic Volkswagen Touareg with quite decent equipment. True, there will be a temptation to choose something from a giant list of options - and there it’s not far from five million.

Or, for example, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, for which they are now asking from 2 million rubles. True, the base is empty as a drum (even the gearbox is mechanical), but in the middle versions the impression of the car will be completely different.

Another thing is that not everyone now has a third row of seats - this is a definite plus for the “Korean”.

It is clear that although Mohave is good, the update is just a way to delay its inevitable exit from the market. After all, years take their toll, and 8 years by modern standards is a lot.

The serial successor is promised to be presented in a maximum of two years. What it will look like is clear from the Telluride concept car, which debuted at the Detroit International Motor Show. Now, most likely, finishing tests are underway.

Results

Kia Mohave 2017 is a very decent car. Big, muscular". And it’s really multifunctional - you can safely go on a long journey on this one - fortunately, a diesel engine provides decent efficiency.

CRY OR LAUGH?

Of course, the updated KIA Mohave does not give the slightest reason to classify it as a pseudo-restyling, but this update cannot be called a full-fledged one either. Rather, half-restyling, since exactly half of what needed to be done was done. Today, when most manufacturers devote themselves entirely to art, trying their best to match tastes, trends, market conditions and what the hell knows, except perhaps for the convenience of users, we have to admit that the direction of change in Mohave is chosen correctly, but is it not money enough, or as usual they decided that “this is not the main thing” ... In general, there is no point in guessing, but in the end we were served a half-empty glass, giving us the opportunity to choose for ourselves: whether to be glad that it is half full, or, conversely, to cry, which is half empty.

The combination of two types of plastic - wood-like and aluminum - is strongly associated with the star-striped automotive culture. Although I got a little excited, this is not wood-like plastic, but rather plastic under a film that depicts a tree. After all, if I'm not mistaken, wood-like plastic should look like wood? American plastic is more like a film that you can buy at a regular hardware store. It's the same with "aluminum"... And to be honest, I like this aesthetic. First, it is democratic. Secondly, it indicates that the manufacturer spent all the money on the car body, and not on natural materials, the presence of which inside the car, in my opinion, is unnecessary. Natural raw materials are appropriate in a country house or some kind of forest gatehouse, and in the decoration of a modern car, everything should speak of victory over the elements ... At least it will be more honest.

The hand of restyling only slightly walked through the interior. Basically, the updates have affected the multimedia system, and they are very positive - now it is more convenient for her to use. But these are trifles. The main thing is work on the suspension. Remember how the old KIA Mohave drove? You won't forget this! It is unlikely that today I can say about it better than seven years ago. If I may, here's a little quote from our 2010 test drive: "Have you ever jumped on a trampoline? Remember how you felt at the top of the jump? The brain remained below, sticking to the base of the skull, the insides fell to the pelvis, not keeping up with the soaring body ... At that moment there was still a slight nausea. And after all, in this slightly nauseating, but such an exciting second, no one grabbed your legs to shake you? Of course not! And KIA Mohave does it. Due to the voluptuous suspension, its body flies up on every wave of asphalt, at the peak endowing the driver with a strong vibration from the wheels shaking with all their unsprung masses. Unique attraction! And so every hundred meters of the way ... ".

Inadequate vertical buildup and annoying vibrations from heavy wheels - these are the two main problems that had to be eliminated during restyling. Everything else, in principle, could not be touched. But of the two problems, KIA was able to cope with only one - the trampoline in the suspension is no more. And that's great. But why did they leave the shaking? I wonder on what basis they chose what to keep and what to fix? Most likely, they did what was cheaper and faster. Thus, the chassis of the current KIA Mohave is exactly half cultivated. Although the car has ceased to be a children's attraction, every unevenness of the asphalt under the wheels turns it into a dog that has climbed out of the water and shakes off drops of hair (although our photographer considers the parallel with a wet caterpillar more appropriate). However, the physics of the question is in any case unchanged. Hitting a small pothole or a crack in the pavement, the Mohave's heavy wheels begin to vibrate wildly, transferring all of their horror to the suspension and bodywork. To be honest, it's very exhausting.

In the meantime, there are happy moments. For example, in the course of restyling, a choice appeared between permanent and plug-in all-wheel drive, plus a limited slip differential in the rear axle was included in the package - important and necessary changes. Diesel has changed for the better. Its characteristics are raised, overclocking is increased, and the noise has practically disappeared! If you knew how beautiful it is on the track. It is necessary to press the pedal a little - and the car literally takes off. Feelings from it are the same as from an eight-cylinder gasoline engine. The dynamics are beyond praise, the acceleration is noble, linear, without jumps and failures, extremely predictable ...

However, as soon as we went off-road, problems also began with him. The reason for them was that the diesel engine has a huge moment, which means that you need to elegantly entangle the engine with a network of electronic assistants and prevent it from burying the wheels up to the hub into the ground at the first slip, without depriving the car of dynamics. Korean engineers coped with this only partially. Electronic collar KIA Mohave by modern standards is very primitive. It works in a rather narrow range and is useless on many types of ground, and although you can ride without it, you have to be extremely careful. The reaction to the right pedal is unexpectedly violent or, conversely, completely insufficient. To justify the Koreans, I can say that the solution of such a problem in the entire global automotive industry is available only to a narrow circle of specialists, since this problem is complex and non-trivial. Although, we admit, and not so fatal. You can get used to throwing an SUV on shaky ground and level them with driving skills, just not everyone will be comfortable with it.

TOTAL

In general, we did not have a definite opinion - this car is good or bad. Impressions are rather patchy. Yes, it is unpleasant on bumps and does not allow you to relax on the roads, however, both in terms of comfort and throttle response it is very good on the highway. In the city, if, of course, you drive only on asphalt, sometimes you get the feeling that you are lying in a bath and you even want to pour shampoo on your head. Therefore, if you decide to follow the example of Agatha Christie, who wrote her detective stories, lying in warm water, or to be like Rosewood from the novel by Sasha Sokolov, who spent almost the entire book lying in the bath, then you will definitely like Mohave. In fact, it's up to the small thing - to remove tram tracks, speed bumps and hacky road contractors from the city, which force the KIA wheels to shake convulsively ... And for the sake of completeness, do not get out of the car during the wash.
