It stands perfectly on the road, it enters corners perfectly, it moves perfectly at the moment of "sharp transitions" from one lane to another. You get used to the car instantly, so much so that after the test you don’t want to leave.

While driving in traffic, I constantly turned on this feature and wanted to find vulnerabilities in it. Something must be wrong. I do not believe that technology has already reached the ability to manage my security without my participation. Audi A4 also proved that standing in a traffic jam, you really can read a newspaper or write messages, but so far it is forbidden to do so. The laws do not allow me to drive on full autopilot, so after a certain time the car reminds me that I need to keep the steering wheel in my hands. True, it is worth noting that the autopilot is convenient to use in the city, but not on the Moscow Ring Road, where the flow often changes and there is no "smooth and uniform movement."

In the description of the car, we are hinted at a combined cycle of 7.7 l / 100 km, but this is only if you really do not get into traffic jams and do not like to use autopilot. I didn't manage to reach less than 10 liters, but I spent a lot of time in testing the autopilot, in slow driving "in the stream" and at high speeds on the track. The next day I tried myself as a calm family man (turned on the Eco mode), who leaves the house, takes the children to school and goes to the office within the "second ring", I managed to reach 8.5 liters.

The price of an Audi A4 car starts from 1.9 million rubles. But this is the starting version. If you want to get a complete set that was on a test drive, the price can reach about 2.8-3.1 million rubles, depending on your imagination.

Last summer I tested a new one that impressed me a lot. Even then, I thought that the developers of the related Audi in the same class would have to work hard in order to offer something more. And I think they even overdid it. In terms of its dimensions and space in the cabin, the new A4 turned out to be one of the largest in the class. Moreover, it is a few millimeters smaller than the Audi A6 C5, and in terms of wheelbase it is even longer! Compared with its predecessor, the novelty has grown by 25 mm in length, by 11 mm in width and by 12 mm in wheelbase level. The sedan also increased the volume of the trunk - from 480 to 505 liters. At the same time, the total weight of the car has decreased by 30-120 kg, depending on the version and configuration. The starting A4 with a 1.4 engine weighs “dry”, without technical fluids and people, 1,320 kilograms. In addition, compared with ardent rivals (Mercedes C-class and BMW 3-series), the new A4 is the longest, however, Mercedes has a longer wheelbase - 20 mm.

Inside, too, solid pluses in all respects. There is more space both front and rear. Compared to the previous generation, 24 mm has been added over the head, and 23 mm for the knees sitting behind. Of course, you can’t sit in the back like in the A8, but even with a growth above the average, the driver will sit down “by himself” without any problems. You can also take the child in your arms.

By default, the A4 is equipped with xenon headlights and almost three dozen security systems. To make it clearer - this model has everything the same as. In terms of Euro NCAP tests, among the models tested in 2015 in the D-class, the Audi A4 outperformed the Renault Talisman, Kia Optima and Skoda Superb and was only slightly behind the Toyota Avensis and Jaguar XE.

The interior of the Audi A4 is like the most affordable Parker pen. Let it be without gold and engraving, but it “lays down” in the hand and pleases the eye. So it is here - no leather, no wood, but you can feel the prosperous German quality factor. True, single-zone climate control as standard sounds like an insult. However, the “base” is one thing and the options are quite another. According to German tradition, the car can be "stuffed" for yourself as you like. But for money. As a result, the cost of a car "for itself" can be one and a half, two, or even three times higher than the price of the basic version. All sorts of "delicacies" in the Audi menu are much larger than in the most elite restaurants. Want a Bang & Olufsen audio system - no question. Would you like adaptive Matrix LED headlights with automatic dimming? Or maybe you need the most "advanced" adaptive cruise control? It is able not only to keep the distance, but also, together with the Audi pre sense city system, to independently stop the car in case of danger (at speeds up to 40 km/h) and even “steering” in the stream (up to 65 km/h)...

But there is still an electronic instrument panel already familiar from several models, which allows you to “equip” the shield at your own request. Like the Q7, you can expand/contract gauges, display the map in full screen, or play economy driving, following the advice of the car. Against this background, the stationary “tablet” of the central display without sensors looks archaic. Multimedia supports Android Auto and Apple Car Play and allows you to display a map from your smartphone on the central monitor, and leave Audi cartography on the tidy - as you like.

A double impression was left of voice control. The system is able to understand natural phrases like "I want to dine at a restaurant" or "I want to go to a gas station." How well does voice control work? She understands English well, but she is not yet “friends” with the Russian language - she has not been fully trained, apparently, to understand cases. Although, maybe the cars that arrived in Russia are already able to listen in Russian. And a little more about the options ... There are very convenient screens for rear passengers. In fact, these are tablets (Pegatron, Taiwan), and in this case - lo and behold - removable. They have an Android platform and 32 GB of memory, and are wirelessly connected to the MMI plus multimedia system. Wireless charging for smartphones is also provided - in the armrest between the driver and passenger.

Technique

In Russia, the new Audi A4 is offered with five engines - three petrol and two diesel. All are turbocharged in-line fours, and the power of petrol and diesel is the same, which at first causes confusion in the configurator. 150 forces each have 1.4 TFSI and 2.0 TDI. 190 each have 2.0 TFSI and another 2.0 TDI. At the top of the Russian line is a 249-horsepower two-liter gasoline. The base motor is available with "mechanics" and a 7-speed "robot" S-Tronic, and all the rest are equipped with a robotic box without an alternative. The diesel three-liter V6 with 272 forces, combined with an 8-speed "hydromechanics", is not represented here - at least not yet.

According to the Germans, all motors have become 21% more economical. This is due not only to technical innovations, but also to the weight reduction of the car, due to the even greater use of aluminum, and aerodynamics. Audi claims a class-leading drag coefficient of 0.23. So it is, but only in the case of the 190-strong modification of the 2.0 TDI ultra, which has active blinds hidden behind the grille and aerodynamically effective underbody protection. For other versions, a value of 0.26 is valid. As before, the front suspension has double wishbones, but with design changes - the levers are attached to the body, and not to the subframes. Behind - a five-link suspension with four upper levers.

How does it ride?

For the A4, two types of chassis are offered - conventional and adaptive, and each of them has "sporty" and "comfortable" presets, which differ in both clearance and rigidity. I didn't notice any significant difference in behavior. Probably, roads without speed limits and with sharper turns were needed. On the public roads around Venice, I don't feel the use of a sports suspension is any good. I believe that in Moscow, or even more so in the regions, this is also a rather pointless option, unless the owner plans visits for track days. The "comfortable" adaptive suspension is just fine. The compromise of settings is almost ideal for average roads. Driving on the "washboard", cornering with excess speed - she will forgive everything. This is not a hovercraft, although it “lays” just as quietly.

I will not tire of repeating - the sound insulation is simply fantastic. So much so that you don’t understand whether you have a diesel engine under the hood or a gasoline engine, whether you are driving on asphalt at 200 km / h or sneaking on gravel. The secret is not only in a solid soundproofing layer on the body, but also in double glazing - it is, however, optional. Traditionally, there was little time for on-site test drives to get to know the car, so it didn’t work out to try all the versions in practice - I had to choose. All diesels fell victim, which in the D-class we traditionally do not like very much. But gasoline tried almost everything, albeit a little. The basic version is offered with a 1.4 TFSI petrol engine for 150 forces, aggregated with a six-speed “mechanics”. Cheerful acceleration, excellent selectivity of "mechanics" - a completely reasonable-sufficient car that will surely appeal to service parks and taxis. By the way, it accelerates to 100 km / h in 8.7 seconds, so if necessary, you can “ignite” a little.

I drive an Audi A4 through a city full of morning traffic. In the cabin, only the muffled bass of the engine is heard during acceleration and the rustle of air in the ventilation system when we stop at the next traffic light. On a green signal, the Start-Stop system starts the engine again, the sedan starts off gently and accelerates smoothly to the next intersection. However, this is an apparent smoothness - I come first to the next red, without even thinking about competing with someone. I'm thinking about something else: why is Audi suddenly concerned about the new A4? They finally changed Q7 - this is understandable. The new A8 is just around the corner - also predictable. But "four"?

Fathers, but the last generation debuted eight years ago! But it seems to me that it was about the day before yesterday ... It's just that the Audi A4 is a rare case of an ageless car. The appearance is quite relevant even after eight years (especially since the car had a facelift exactly in the middle of its life), the engines are modern, the chassis is with all the “bells and whistles”, including active steering and adjustable shock absorbers. A gentleman's set of electronics is also present. What else is needed?

Need to. For the Audi company itself, the “four” is more important than any Q7. In the big German three, she is in the first roles only in the DTM championship. And in terms of sales, the A4 is traditionally inferior to both the C-class and the BMW three-ruble note. And in this race, the eight-year-old “old woman” had no chance. That, however, did not detract from its merits.

So, it seems, the designers of the “Four Rings” also thought. The appearance of the new sedan has more sharp edges, but the overall style has been preserved: with a hexagonal grille shield, circular outlines of the wheel arches and spectacular (this time double) strokes of navigation lights. The headlights are xenon, just LED-one and matrix adaptive, like the A8. But in general, the “four” is still a real business woman. Strict suit, discreet makeup, proper nutrition.

The Ingolstadt diet, by the way, works - the car has grown a little in size, but in some trim levels it has become more than 100 kg lighter! The body remained steel (although it dropped about 15 kg), a-lu-minia was added to the chassis. From it, half of the front subframe, brake calipers, some front and rear suspension arms, front panel frame, and even partially electrical wiring!

Engineers also worked on power units. The base will be a lightweight 1.4 TFSI turbo engine developing 150 hp. And the new 2.0 TFSI will certainly become the most “common” in Russia. It does not have the highest power for a two-liter turbo - 190 hp. (there is another option in 249 forces), but a very high compression ratio - 11.7. Such a motor, thanks to direct injection and double cams on the intake and exhaust camshafts, can operate on the Miller cycle. Why all these tricks? To save money - the “passport” consumption of the A4 2.0 TFSI is only 4.8 l / 100 km!

It is tighter inside, it has a shorter list of options. But the driver has more emotions

In conjunction with the engine, a new 7-speed “preselective” is working - and this is a happy marriage. From the next traffic light, they accelerate the “four” smoothly, but assertively. The turbo lag of the engine is almost not felt, gear changes are quick and timely. Only the voice of the engine is fresh and at times too insistent. But this is an illusion. It's just that other noises, even at high speeds, hardly penetrate the cabin - they paid special attention to sound insulation. And for those who do not skimp on the optional Bang & Olufsen (with 3D sound) for 80,000, the active noise reduction system will also get “for change”.

The seriously updated chassis also seems to be as friendly as possible ... until the first hatch. Bang bang! - the blow is sensitive. Why so tough? The answer is in the equipment list: an optional sports suspension (minus 20 mm of ground clearance). Yes, the sedan follows the wheel like a thread behind a needle. And the steering itself is pleasantly sharp and commendably informative - Audi still has one of the best electric power assists in the world. But for all the sharpness of the control, there is no excitement in the nature of the “four”. She - like a medalist at school - is correct and studies for one five. But for some reason others win medals at the Olympics ... Take a standard comfortable suspension, or better, an adaptive one.

However, the choice of suspension will not be the most difficult thing. Here is the interior equipment ... Aluminum or wood? Fabric, leather, alcantara? Ordinary shield or virtual? Do you need Internet access and navigation with traffic jams, or will we get by with our own smartphone, which can be controlled via MMI? Should rear passengers take Android tablets or will 3-zone climate control be enough for them? And how to help yourself, the driver? From the word “assist” in the configurator dazzles in the eyes - the Tour package (active cruise control with the Stop & Go function, Lane assist with autosteering, traffic sign control, etc.), City assist (this is the control of lane changes and “oncoming traffic” when turning left ), a “parking” package with all-round cameras and a car valet. There is even a “warning” when opening the door - in case some horseman is rushing past. In short, the arsenal is impressive. It remains a trifle - to beat their competitors in the premium trio ...
