“Mercedes C 600” in the 140th body is a legend that has been published for seven years - from 1991 to 1998. This car replaced Mercedes, made in the 126th body. This machine was simply outdated by that time. Therefore, the “six hundredth” came into the world, which almost immediately became synonymous with the words “consistency”, “success” and “good taste”.

Briefly about the model

So, what can be said first of all about the C 600? This is a car that at one time made a splash. Unlike its predecessors, it delighted critics and potential buyers with its aerodynamic body, auto-closing doors and trunk. Plus, climate control was installed inside, which functioned even after the power unit stopped working. And this car also had tail antennas that rose when the driver turned on the reverse.

Initially, the model was offered with four engines and two bases. There were eight different options in total. The most attractive for motorists was the M120E60 V-shaped power unit for 12 cylinders. Over the years of production, 16 models have been released with various 8- and 6-cylinder engines. And those are just the petrol versions. But diesel ones were also produced. In general, the choice of motorists from the nineties was rather big in this regard.

popular model

The most powerful version is the 140 body model, known as the C 600 L. It has powerful technical features that are amazing even today. The unit installed under the hood of this version can produce 394 horsepower. is 250 kilometers per hour. The declared consumption is 13.7 liters per 100 kilometers (combined cycle), but with “age”, of course, it increases. In fact, the car consumes more than 20 liters per 100 "urban" kilometers. And up to 100 km / h, this car accelerates in 6.6 seconds. In general - an unrealistically strong, fast and dynamic car for the nineties.

This 600th Mercedes could also boast a 4-band “automatic”, power steering, independent multi-link suspension (both front and rear), ventilated disc brakes, ESP, ABS, ASR and many other additions. This car has everything you might need. No wonder it became so popular and remains so to this day.

Budget versions

With 600 - the car is far from cheap. If even now it can cost at least half a million (in excellent condition and in a decent configuration), then only wealthy people could afford it. But still, a year after the presentation of the car, budget versions of the C 600 were provided to the world.

The first became known as the 300SE 2.8. She boasted a 2.8-liter engine and a manual transmission. The second version was equipped with a 3.5-liter turbodiesel for 6 cylinders. True, diesel S-class models (according to a long-established tradition) were developed in order to be then sent to North America for export. This condition could explain many incomprehensible features in such machines. For example, an automatic transmission installed as standard equipment (everyone knows that today in America the vast majority of people drive automatic transmissions, and then it was about the same). And the first diesel models of the “six hundredth” were indeed sent to the States. But then it was decided that the car turned out to be too successful to deprive the Europeans of it. And they began to acquire it mainly for taxi companies.

1994 changes

The Mercedes S 600 whose characteristics were discussed above managed to cut the hearts of thousands of motorists in the first three years. And the cars got really high marks. Reviews of the Mercedes C 600 model inspired manufacturers and developers to restyle.

It was decided to replace the turn signal glasses with transparent ones (before that they were orange, and this seemed to many not harmonious). Behind put new lights. Also reduced the clearance of the car. Plus, plastic bumpers with a matte surface began to be painted in the same color as the body.

As for equipment, the car received an improved interior and new electronics. Inside, it has become more stylish and refined. There is also a new radiator grille. In general, a significantly “refreshed” and updated “Mercedes C 600” was released. The features that the developers endowed him with were immediately noted by Mercedes-Benz fans.

Technical updates

In addition to external restyling, the new versions began to differ in some other technical features. The developers did a good job on the engines. In particular, V12 and V8. As a result of the improvement, the M119 motor has a new crankshaft, and valve control has also been optimized. Lightweight pistons also appeared. Each cylinder has its own ignition coil. He also, like the M120, has an optimized motor control unit.

The updated units are driven by a lighter and more compact automatic transmission. She was also equipped with an electronic control unit, and a fifth speed was also introduced - increased. She, in turn, had a locking mechanism in the torque converter. Thanks to all these changes, the car has not only become more “obedient”, dynamic and technically perfect. Fuel consumption has also been significantly reduced. It became lower by as much as 7 percent, which is a worthy indicator. The release of poisonous gases was completely reduced to a minimum - the level decreased by 40 (!) Percent. At the same time, no deterioration in terms of dynamics was noticed.

Last changes

In 1996, the car was improved for the last time. They decided to remove the retractable “antennas” - instead of them, a parking radar system appeared, which today is known as parking sensors. They also installed a GPS receiver. The diesel model was completely replaced by another. The novelty has a 3-liter turbodiesel unit with a reduced displacement, but with a turbocharger (which, moreover, was distinguished by intercooling).

The 600 became something special - it was more than a car. She brought a lot of new things not only for the Stuttgart brand, but for the entire automotive world as a whole. This model was one of the few at that time on which a double-glazed window was used. Also, it would hardly have been possible to find another such car, in which the windows immediately stopped during the ascent, as soon as some foreign object interfered with them (a hand, for example). And the “six hundredth” is the first car in Europe, on which the electric control system for the saloon mirror was used.

Special versions

In addition to the usual models, other special versions were also released. So, for example, in 1992, an armored car saw the light. She became known as the Sonderschutz. Armored windows, built-in plates, special tires, high-strength materials ... All this significantly affected the level of safety of the car. Yes, and its mass has increased - immediately by one and a half tons.

The second special version is Long. More specifically, a Pullman limousine. Initially, the machine was lengthened by a company called Binz. But then Daimler got down to business. “One hundred and fortieths” were sawn, and then an insert a whole meter long was added.

In 1995, a mixture of these two versions appeared at all. She was called - Pullman-Sonderschutz. That is an armored limousine. These modifications were created extremely long, hard and painstakingly. The work was labor intensive. Therefore, it is not surprising that all orders were made by individual agreement with a person who wants to master a special version. And for this reason, the price was not disclosed. Two years - that's about how long it took to make an armored limousine.

And the last "special" car is ... "daddy". Lando version especially for the Pope.

Modern "six hundredth"

Today, the 600th Mercedes is very popular. That's just not in the 140th, but in the 222nd body. This is an incredible car! In the basic configuration, she received a 12-cylinder V-shaped 530-horsepower (!) Six liters. By tradition, the L package is equipped with an automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive.

The maximum that the novelty of 2015 can develop is 250 km / h, and this is electronically limited. Up to a hundred, the car accelerates in a little more than 4.5 seconds. In the combined cycle, it consumes approximately 11.3 liters of fuel. The price of this car starts from 11 million rubles, so a respectable person with the appropriate income and the ability to maintain this car can afford it.

Brabus

Brabus is one of the best tuning studios that deal with Mercedes. So, Brabus specialists simply could not ignore the “six hundredth” in the 222nd body. And it turned out just unrealistically powerful machine. Firstly, the engine power was 900 (!) horsepower. The maximum possible speed is 350 kilometers per hour. Acceleration decreased to 3.7 seconds (thus becoming one and a half seconds faster). Engine displacement increased by 253 cc.

But the price is right too. To buy such a car, you have to spend 390 thousand dollars. In return, a person will receive a simply amazing car, in which all modern technologies are embodied. Plus, the car has an incredible design, optics and interior. If we talk about the perfection of automotive art, then the W222 Brabus is it.

Mercedes limousine S 600 W222

According to the tradition that developed in the nineties, the concern decided to release another “long” version. The deed was done, and the novelty surpassed even the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 in its dimensions. Its length is 6.5 meters without a millimeter! The wheelbase is impressive - 4.418 mm. And the height is almost 1.6 m. So, despite the external dynamism and sophistication, it is as spacious as possible inside. Well, under the hood is a V12 biturbo engine.

What can be said in the end? The fact that "Mercedes" is not just a car. You could say it's a way of life. Reviews about such machines are extremely positive. There is nothing to complain about here. The only negative that can be seen in the reviews of the owners is expensive parts and maintenance, sometimes high fuel consumption.

"Mercedes 600" is an executive car whose history begins back in 1926. Of course, we are not talking about modern models, but about those from which the start of production began. Over time, the car has been improved, and today the "six hundredth" Mercedes is one of the best and most representative cars in the world.

How it all began

"Mercedes 600 140" has become a full replacement for the legendary 126th. It was he who received the status of the best-selling model of the world famous concern. The development and design team worked hard to create a good car. And it succeeded - "one hundred and fortieth" became a purchased model. Everyone knew that this was a luxury car for very wealthy people. Even then, among the fans of the Stuttgart concern, an association was entrenched - when they talked about the new "six hundredth", the W100 limousine, which was marked with the same number, immediately loomed in the imagination. That's just it was produced until 1981.

After the appearance on the automotive market of such a car as the Mercedes 600, the S-class was entrenched as a full-size and expensive sedan.

"One hundred and fortieth" and its technical characteristics

This model is truly unique. And its first feature is that the 140th was created at a time when computer technology was already beginning to be used in the automotive industry. Manufacturers could not miss this innovation and equipped the model with a variety of new products.

So, the car acquired an aerodynamic body (and in two versions). It was possible to purchase both with a short base and with a long one. They differed by 100 mm. Also, the Mercedes 600 is the first car in the world to be equipped with double-glazed windows. Due to this, the indicators of noise and heat insulation have been significantly improved. Plus, now the windows do not fog up. Another "one hundred and fortieth" differed from other cars with folding side mirrors and an electronic drive of the saloon mirror. No wonder they said about this car that it is the embodiment of comfort and safety. By the way, a few words about the latter. In the "six hundredth" there were also side airbags. And if a potential buyer had such a desire, then the back row could be specially equipped with orthopedic chairs for him.

Improved performance and power

The characteristic of the Mercedes 600 shows that it is not only a comfortable and convenient car in all respects, but also a fast and powerful vehicle. "One hundred and fortieth", for example, has an electronic stabilization system. It was Mercedes-Benz that subsequently (after 1995) began to sell this ESP to other car manufacturers. Even in the configuration of the car - a new braking system, which in an emergency uses the rear wheels.

Engines and their features

Despite the fact that the Mercedes 600 was produced for a long time, even at that time, customers were offered several modifications with an extensive line of engines. Take, for example, gasoline. The minimum volume was 2.8 liters for the conventional in-line "six". And the maximum is six liters. Many modern manufacturers can envy such an indicator. By the way, a 6-liter V12 engine is installed on the version, the power of which is almost 400 horsepower! Such data is amazing.

By the way, there were also two turbodiesel engines - three and 3.5 liters. But the most reliable (according to numerous car owners) is a 5-liter engine.
Almost all engines were equipped with an automatic transmission. The only difference is that until 1996 they were produced with hydraulic control, but after that, manufacturers decided to switch to electronic. Interestingly, the engineers focused on reducing the release of toxins into the atmosphere. And they succeeded, as the S-Class received an award for caring for the environment.

The Mercedes 600, whose photo shows us a luxurious executive car, became the basis for creating the "number one car" for the whole world. It's really interesting. Mercedes remained such a "standard" until 2002 (that is, five years), however, even then the car created on the basis of the Mercedes-Benz MB ML 430 became the "number one car".

Also interesting is the fact that this model was very popular among residents of the countries of the former Soviet Union. It is worth noting that the serial production of this "Mercedes" was just in full swing during the collapse of the USSR. And certainly it is no secret to anyone that it was the "six hundredth" that became a kind of symbol of the "new Russians". By the way, the very first Mercedes 600S belonged to Vladimir Zhirinovsky.

There is no limit to perfection

As you can see, this car has gained incredible popularity. Everyone knows that this is the best incentive for the automaker to further improve his creation. So the subsequent “six hundredths” became better and better than their predecessors.

Take, for example, the 2001 model. It is equipped with everything you need: anti-lock and anti-slip systems, on-board computer, light and rain sensors, cruise control, xenon headlights, radio, sunroof, navigator, heated steering wheel and mirrors, headlight washer, security system, parking sensors ... and this only a small list of all the advantages that the Mercedes 600 can boast of. Photos of the car immediately make it clear - this is a car for respectable and presentable people. In addition to a powerful configuration and respectable technical characteristics, this "iron horse" also has a stunning design. This stately and presentable car, which is immediately noticeable among the flow of other cars, is unlikely to leave anyone indifferent.

Fuel consumption

I would like to note that the volume of the fuel tank is impressive - it is 88 liters. The average fuel consumption on the highway is 9.5 liters. Perhaps the only not very positive thing is the amount of gasoline that Mercedes spends. Fuel consumption per 100 kilometers in the city is 19 liters. Well, the numbers are impressive, but this is unlikely to bother a person who has bought a "six hundredth" Mercedes.

Control

"Mercedes-Benz 600" is also distinguished by excellent handling. Turns, drifts, rough roads - none of the above is an obstacle for him or some kind of unsolvable problem. And this, in fact, is not surprising. After all, Mercedes is the standard of comfort, speed, reliability and prestige. All 500 horsepower of the V12 engine pulls a car that weighs almost two tons with such ease that it accelerates the car to "100" in less than five seconds. Not all modern novelties can boast of such indicators.

Driving this car is a real pleasure. First, the divinely designed interior. Secondly - comfortable comfortable chairs with heating and massage functions. Excellent visibility is another plus. You don't even want to let go of the steering wheel.

In general, people who are happy owners of this Mercedes declare with confidence that it is unlikely that they will be able to find the best car with such characteristics and for a fairly loyal price. For example, a modification with a 5-liter engine manufactured in 2008, in excellent condition and with perfect suspension, can be purchased for only 1,250,000 rubles. We have to agree - this is very little money for a luxury car, which has become a real legend of the German car industry.

Finding and buying a 140 in perfect condition, and even from the first owner, is priceless in itself today. Yes, and just brought from the Germans - life was a success, I guess? Not a "time capsule" of course - as it is now fashionable to say, but still ...
Surely you have repeatedly heard the statement that driving a 20-year-old car is painful. Well, it is likely that such theses are true, if we talk about tired of life, shabby and tormented Frankensteins. But what if suddenly on your life path you come across a noble, mature, real car in years - for example, like this handsome man?

If you start listing the iconic cars of the 20th century, then there will most likely be no more than two dozen of them - not the most outstanding indicator for something with more than a hundred years of history. Among them will be the first Ford small cars, a couple of front-wheel drive "workhorses", Italian sports cars, etc. But still, cars of the German brand Mercedes-Benz, which became an example for contemporaries, an object of envy and cult, will stand apart in this company. “The best of the best” will surely be called the “engineering giant” - the legendary Mercedes-Benz 600 (W100) limousine, which became one of the most expensive, luxurious, prestigious and coveted cars of its time, which only very famous film actors, billionaires, could afford. prominent athletes and heads of state. In order to at least slightly imagine the status of this model, one can cite at least the fact that all of its copies were made exclusively to order by hand. To this day, the Mercedes-Benz 600 is extremely popular and highly collectible.

background

Even before the war, the Mercedes concern became widely known as a manufacturer of luxury cars, which the most famous politicians of the time, including the Nazi and fascist elite of Europe, had the honor to drive. After the end of hostilities, Germany was carrying the burden of the losing country, so the auto industry was not a priority for it in a certain period, which left the company alone with its difficulties.

However, by the first half of the fifties, the demand for expensive cars still appeared due to the revival of the market and the formation of a welfare society, which resulted in the release of the W186 model, named after the first chancellor of Germany, Adenauer. In general, having an outdated design and a weak engine, she successfully compensated for this with hand-built quality, a classic look and timely upgrades (W189). However, it was clear to everyone that Adenauer, in the light of the technological achievements of the fifties, would not last long, which meant that a completely new machine of this class was required.

Stylistics

In the 1950s and 1960s, two main trends stood out in the world auto fashion - the American one, which, even before the advent of muscle cars, got involved in the race for horsepower and at the same time emphasized swiftness and power in the exterior through various decorative solutions, and the European one, which considered lightness and dynamics while maintaining the continuity of generations and traditions.

Mercedes W100 feed

For the time being, German engineers tried to maneuver between these two schools, but on the new model it was decided to try out a new style without looking back at others. It had to combine classic elements like the grille and emblem, as well as dynamism and lightness of the image without the influence of fashion, which would take the design out of time. The result exceeded all expectations, and this ensured an almost twenty-year production period for the Mercedes-Benz W100.

Interior

Technique

Not only the design was progressive, but also the technical part, including, in addition to the power steering, automatic transmission, air conditioning, and air suspension, which ensured unprecedented smoothness. Due to the large mass of the resulting structure, the body was made load-bearing, which made it possible to lower the center line of the car, visually unloading the heavy car somewhat.

Technical "stuffing" of the model

Separately, the question arose about the power unit. Although, by definition, a representative car does not require particularly outstanding speed qualities, but, apparently following the American trends of “enlarging” engines and the pre-war traditions of installing a V8 on luxury cars, it was decided to develop a new eight-cylinder engine for the W100. Thanks to the high-torque V-shaped engine with a volume of 6.3 liters, the three-ton colossus accelerated to astronomical 205 km / h at that time, while having 250 horsepower and a good torque of 503 Nm at four thousand revolutions per minute. According to the characteristics of the "six hundredth" Mercedes, it was second only to the racing cars of that time.

Engine 6.3 V8 250 HP

The limousine, assembled only by hand, had several options:

  • an ordinary four-door sedan, produced in short-wheelbase and elongated versions with a glass partition in the cabin, which, in fact, made it a limousine;
  • four or six-door long versions of the "Pullman", which differed from each other in the central row of seats for doormen.

Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman 6-door limousine

There was also a modification with a landau body, the famous owner of which was the Pope. In addition, two copies of the coupe, donated to the creators of the car - Fritz Nallinger and Rudolf Uhlenhout, saw the light.

Among the owners of the Mercedes-Benz 600, one can name famous actors of that time - Jack Nicholson, Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis Presley, John Lennon, etc.; businessmen - Bob Jane, Hugh Hefner and Aristotle Onassis; politicians, including communists - Idi Amin, Hirohito, Ferdinand Marcos, Nicolae Ceausescu, Fidel Castro, Pol Pot, Mao Zedong, Leonid Brezhnev and others.

Years of release and price

The Mercedes-Benz 600 (W100) was produced for almost twenty years - from 1963 to 1981. During this time, only 2677 copies were assembled (59 of them with an open body). The replacement of the model was found in the face of the long-base versions of the second generation of the S-class W126, however, with all its advantages, this car was still massive. The third generation S-Class W140, which had both the flagship version with the eponymous index “600” and the “Pullman” version for heads of state, managed to get closer to the legendary limousine, but it also could not compare with the “six hundredth” in exclusivity. For this and many other reasons, the Mercedes-Benz W100 is still a unique representative of the German premium brand's model line. The price of copies of the W100 600 that have survived to this day often exceeds 100 thousand dollars.
