Mercedes-Benz CLS is a four-door coupe from DaimlerChrysler. In 2003, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz presented a concept based on the E-Class - Mercedes Vision CLS. The serial model appeared only a year later at the Geneva auto show and practically does not differ from the concept car, and the name remains unchanged - Mercedes CLS.

Despite the phrase “four-door coupe” often used in relation to this car, the Mercedes CLS is a sedan, but with a strongly inclined C-pillar, smoothly flowing into the rear overhang. That is why in profile the novelty resembles a massive and luxurious coupe. However, in the car there are all generic signs of sedans, since it has a closed three-volume four-door body with a trunk isolated from the passenger compartment. Mercedes-Benz positions this model, its cost and equipment between the Mercedes E-Class and Mercedes S-Class sedans, this is also indicated by the abbreviation CLS.

At the heart of the Mercedes CLS is a platform from the E-class, from which the wheelbase and engine range are borrowed, but the body of the car is fundamentally new. CLS received other than the E-class headlights, which used to be four. In general, the front of the 4-door coupe is completely different from the E-class, it looks very dynamic. The design of the car is made in the best traditions of the brand: a streamlined look, a long hood, a sloping roof line, a high window sill line and a spectacular stamping stretching from the front wheel arch to the lower edge of the short high trunk lid.

Inside the car is spacious, like in a full-size sedan, which is no wonder given the very impressive dimensions of the Mercedes CLS: the length of the car is 4.91 meters, the height is 1.38 meters, the wheelbase is 2.854 mm. The volume of the luggage compartment allows you not to worry about the placement of suitcases, it is 505 liters. The interior design is made of cream-colored leather, the front part with wooden inserts and numerous on-board system control keys.

Only two engines are initially planned as engines for the new Mercedes CLS. This is a 3.5-liter six-cylinder with 272 horsepower, as well as a five-liter V8 with 306 horsepower. From zero to one hundred kilometers per hour, the coupe will accelerate in 7.0 and 6.1 seconds, respectively. The maximum speed of both modifications will be limited to 250 kilometers per hour. The most notable is active bi-xenon headlights that can “look around the corner”, which increases the level of active safety. (By the way, the complex shape of their plafonds suggests that the famous "big-eyed" front end on the E-class will soon come to an end.) In addition, the coupe is equipped with modern passive and active safety systems, including the modernization of tomoses, replenished with electronic systems, which are noticeably make it easier to control deceleration in traffic jams and start on a slope. As an option, the CLS will receive adaptive cruise control and the Comand system.

In 2008, there was a new round in the history of the CLS model. The updated model is slightly, but still different from what was first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 2004. New touches inscribed in the old contours made the appearance of the four-door coupe even more solid and not so heavy. At the front, there is a new grille with two crossbars instead of four and a gray mesh covering the space behind the grille and the air intake opening in the bumper. This gave the appearance even more aggression. Built-in side mirrors (the area of ​​​​which has increased by 32%) turn signal repeaters are now LED and made in the form of arrows. On the side, new alloy wheels immediately stand out, 17-inch for the CLS 280, CLS 320 CDI and CLS 350 CGI versions, 18-inch for the CLS 500 model and 19-inch for the CLS 63 AMG. The car has also changed a little in the back. Exhaust pipes are no longer oval, but trapezoidal. The bumper itself has become somewhat different: it seemed to go deeper into the car at the bottom. The design of the taillights remained the same, but the brake light and direction indicators received LED technology.

The interior has also been updated. The instrument cluster has changed slightly, new finishing materials and a multifunctional three-spoke steering wheel have appeared. Of greater interest in the interior is the new Comand control and display system with a 6.5-inch color monitor. All the main multimedia functions and the navigation system are tied to it. All this can be controlled both by sorting through the corresponding keys, and by voice.

Engineers from Stuttgart did not limit themselves to design delights. The updated basic version of the CLS uses a new V-shaped "six" with a working volume of 2996 cm3. The rated power of the power unit is 231 hp, and the maximum torque of 300 Nm is already achieved at 2500 revolutions of the crankshaft and lasts up to 5000 revolutions. Thanks to this, acceleration to 100 km / h in the CLS 280 takes 7.7 seconds, and the maximum speed is 245 km / h. Average fuel consumption is 9.8-10.0 liters per 100 km.

In 2010, the long-awaited world premiere of the second generation of the CLS coupe took place at the international motor show in Paris. The car is based on the W212 E-class. The designers of Mercedes-Benz, having retained the "family" features, brought touches to the appearance of the new generation model that made the exterior of the car much more modern and elegant. The exterior is based on two concept cars CLS Shooting Brake Concept and F800 Style: a sloping roof line, wide wheel arches, LED optics, and an impressive radiator grille.

The 2011 Mercedes CLS did not gain weight (the weight is the same as 1735 kg), but gained a little in size, its length increased by 27 mm (up to 4940 mm), wheelbase by 20 mm (2874 mm). The CLS package has five color options for the "general" interior, five options for molding and applications, and three options for choosing leather quality. A special feature is a leather-trimmed front panel with hand-stitched stitching. The top option is the “Passion” package, which has leather that has retained its native porosity structure and conveys all its naturalness. The back row is designed for two and will give passengers no less comfort than landing in the front. Interestingly, unlike the first model, CLS 2011 with a 520-liter trunk is not deprived of practicality - it folds the rear seats, which increases the loading volume.

The second generation Mercedes-Benz CLS will receive a new 4-cylinder engine, it will be equipped with a diesel modification of the 2.1-liter (204 hp, 500 Nm torque) CLS 250 CDI. With this unit, the car has a pretty good dynamics and excellent fuel consumption. From standstill to “hundreds” it accelerates in 7.5 seconds, the maximum speed is 242 km / h. In the combined cycle, the car consumes 5.1 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. Petrol 3.6-liter "six" (306 HP, torque 370 Nm) CLS 350 CGI accelerates to a hundred in 6.1 seconds and can reach speeds of 250 km/h. The diesel V6 on the CLS 350 CDI (265 hp, 620 Nm of torque) has almost the same capabilities and is more economical. And finally, an 8-cylinder 4.7-liter (with an incredible 435 hp at a torque of 700 Nm, available already from the 1800 rpm mark) engine on the top-end CLS 500 configuration. The top one in this palette is, of course, variant of the CLS 63 AMG V8, which has a power of 544 horsepower and a maximum torque of 800 Nm.

All trim levels of the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS are paired with a seven-speed 7G-Tronic automatic transmission. The car can be front- or all-wheel drive (4Matic transmission is responsible for all-wheel drive). All variants will be equipped with the Start Stop function as standard.

Electronics controls the position of the car on the road. It scans the markings and prevents the driver from falling off the lane. Cameras and sensors monitor "dead zones" and display warning signals on the computer screen. The machine is ready to intervene in the event of an unexpected obstacle. Pre-safe technology and “active” brakes are used for this. The steering is parametric: the lower the speed, the lighter the steering. And its highlight is self-adjusting centering, when the resistance of the steering wheel to turning increases with increasing speed. Thus, the illusion of sporty driving is created. Complementing the picture are nine airbags already in the basic configuration, an infrared camera (for night vision), automatic parking systems, and high beam control.

The trunk volume of the Shooting Brake modification with the second row seats up is 590 liters, and with the seats folded down - 1548 liters. As an option, the trunk can be ordered in rich American cherry wood with bog oak inlay. It is noteworthy that already in the basic configuration, the fifth door is equipped with an electric drive.

Interior elements are made of high-quality plastic, leather and expensive woods, which is typical for all premium Mercedes models. The front of the station wagon has not undergone absolutely any changes compared to the four-door. CLS Shooting Brake, unlike the coupe, received a solid rear sofa designed for three passengers.

The line of powertrains Mercedes CLS-class Shooting Brake has several diesel and gasoline options. The CLS 250 CDI modification received a 2.1-liter diesel engine developing 204 horsepower, and the 350 CDI version received a 265-horsepower 3-liter V6. In the basic configuration, the station wagon is monoprivodny (front-wheel drive). An all-wheel drive version is available as an option.

The CLS-class Shooting Brake suspension is tuned for maximum comfort and driving pleasure. McPherson type front suspension, multi-link rear. As an option, an active AirMatic air suspension is offered, which makes the car sporty and comfortable at the same time.

Under the hood is a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 that develops 525 hp. With such a motor, the car accelerates to 100 km / h in 4.4 s. Fuel consumption is 10.1 liters of fuel per 100 km in the combined cycle.

In AMG versions, instead of the usual "automatic" 7-G Tronic, a modified version of it called AMG Speedshift MCT is installed. Here, instead of a torque converter, there is a multi-plate “wet” clutch, as well as an electronic filling different from the original one: thanks to this, the box received launch control in addition to four modes of operation (here it is called Racing Start). In manual or Sport+ position, shifts take 100 milliseconds.

In accordance with the powerful engine for the AMG version, the suspension, steering and braking system of the station wagon were changed. The AMG Ride Control suspension also has three modes - Comfort, Sport and Sport plus - that can be changed at the push of a button to suit the road conditions. The difference between comfort and sport modes in the "charged" version is more noticeable. The Sport mode is quite hard, as soon as it is activated, passengers will perfectly feel the type of surface on which the car is traveling. As for the braking system, 360 mm ventilated carbon-ceramic brake discs are available as an option for the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake.

There is also a version of Edition 1. In it, the engine is fired up to 557 “horses” and 800 “Newtons”. Acceleration to 100 km / h takes 4.3 seconds.

Questions on the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class 2018 in the new body are not caused except by the wide grille in the style of the AMG GT supercar and, of course, the incredibly chic interior. True, he is already familiar with the new E-Class W213 and the restyled one, but he really looks amazing.

Inside, the car meets with high-quality materials, 64-color atmospheric diode lighting, a modern steering wheel with touch panels, cool ventilation nozzles made in the style of aircraft turbines, as well as two huge 12.3-inch monitors on the front panel under a common visor.

In addition, for the first time for this model, a sofa for three passengers became available at the rear - before only two could accommodate there, and the front seats were designed specifically for the new Mercedes-Benz CLS (C257). The new body made it possible to reduce the drag coefficient to 0.26.

With the change of generation, the sedan was rebased on the MRA modular platform with a double wishbone suspension in front and a five-link rear suspension. The wheelbase (2,393 mm) is the same as on the “yeshka”, but the total length is slightly larger due to the increased overhangs. Six powertrains are provided for the car, but at first only three of them will be available - all with a proprietary 4MATIC all-wheel drive system and a nine-speed automatic. Engines - petrol and diesel “fours” and new in-line “sixes”, V8 engines are now only for modifications from AMG.

The diesel versions of the CLS 350 d and 400 d are equipped with 2.9-liter "sixes" with a capacity of 286 hp. (600 Nm) and 340 hp (700 Nm). They provide models with acceleration from zero to hundreds in 5.7 and 5.0 seconds, respectively. Under the hood of the petrol CLS 450 4MATIC, there is a 367-horsepower (500 Nm) M256 unit, supplemented by an EQ Boost system (4.7 seconds to hundreds).

The latter includes a 48-volt starter-generator, powered by its own lithium-ion battery, and allows for a short-term increase in output by 22 hp. and 250 Nm. The electric motor helps at the start and in a number of other cases when it is necessary, and during braking it recovers energy to recharge its battery.

The same superstructure (except with a slightly more modest 14-horsepower and 150 Nm engine) is also provided for the CLS 350 version with the new two-liter “four” of the M264 series (with two turbochargers), which produces 299 hp. and 400 Nm. From 0 to 100 km / h, this option travels in 6.2 seconds, the maximum speed is limited to two hundred and fifty.

The price of the new Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse in Russia starts from 4,950,000 rubles for the basic diesel modification in the Elegance configuration (surcharge for the Sport version is 250,000 rubles), and the more powerful 400d version costs at least 5,610,000 rubles. The petrol version starts at 5,100,000 r (CLS 350), while for the 450th they ask from 5,660,000 r, and the “warmed up” CLS 53 costs at least 6,400,000.

In 2005, the public was presented with an exclusive limited edition Mercedes CLS AMGIWC. The modification was the result of cooperation between the AMG tuning studio and the Swiss watchmaker International Watch Company (IWC). Unique decorative elements became a feature of the collection series. The version was painted in the original "titanium metallic" color, which completely coincides with the color of the titanium cases of IWC watches. 19" wheels in 5-spoke design in matt grey.
