Mercedes-Benz "Gelendvagen" - review, photos, specifications. Modifications and specifications of the Mercedes-Benz G-class

"Gee vagen", "Gelik" - as soon as this car is not called by the people. A real legend, a model that everyone knows. One of the few cars that has been in fashion for over 30 years. At first, it was planned and created as a car for the Iranian army, but then the plans failed, and the designers began to look for places where they could sell the car for civilian needs. In 1989, a version for the city was introduced, model W463.

Appearance

In the future, Gelendewagen was often subjected to modernization, its appearance, engine, electronic filling were changed, there was even a convertible version. By itself, the appearance of the car is not aerodynamic, but it is thanks to this that the model has become so popular, especially among wealthy men who just need such a shape, harsh and square. During the modernization and transition to a civilian purpose, the car did not lose its brutality and military qualities, making it the main one on the road. The G-Wagen is 4.6 meters long, 1.7 meters wide and has a wheelbase of 2.8 meters. The height is almost 2 meters. The advantage is a rather large distance from the bottom of the body to the road - as much as 20 centimeters when the car is fully loaded. The model weighs 2.5 tons, which is very good.

Salon Mercedes Gelendvagen

And if you can find fault with the appearance, then as for the interior, you won’t turn your tongue to say something bad. Gorgeous finishes, state-of-the-art equipment, comfortable chairs. The salon cannot be called sad, everything is done with high quality, beautiful, elegant and, most importantly, modern. The trunk is great for shopping enthusiasts - its volume is 2250 liters.

Vehicle equipment

Now in Russia you can buy two versions of the car. The basic configuration is a model with a diesel engine with 6 cylinders (V6) and a volume of 3 liters. There is also a turbocharging system, fuel injection is carried out directly. Such an engine develops 211 horsepower, the maximum speed is 175 kilometers per hour, and acceleration to one hundred kilometers per hour is carried out in 9 seconds. Compared to other cars, this is not very much, but do not forget about the mass, after all, 2.5 tons is quite difficult to disperse. Such an engine eats a lot: if you are going to drive around the city, get ready to spend 14 liters of fuel every 100 kilometers, on the highway - 10 liters. The top version in Russia is a model with a gasoline engine, the characteristics of which look more sporty. The first difference is the presence of eight cylinders (V8). The volume is increased to 5.5 liters, and the power is up to 387 horsepower. Acceleration to hundreds with such an engine is only 6 seconds, and the maximum speed is now 210 kilometers per hour. With the increase in the amount of power and the size of the engine, the consumption of gasoline has also increased. Now you need 20 liters of fuel for city driving, and almost 12 liters for highway driving. Both diesel and petrol versions are driven by a seven-speed automatic transmission. Also, all Gelendvagens are equipped with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The front wheels are equipped with disc brakes with increased strength, but the rear wheels are cheated - they have simple disc brakes. The car is also equipped with power steering. This model could not fail to attract the attention of designers from AMG. In our country, you can find 3 versions of the G-Wagen AMG: G63, G63 6 × 6 (version with 6 wheels) and G65. The G63 was fitted with a V-8, twin-turbocharged engine and other interesting things that boosted the power to 544 horsepower. The G65 is a real sports car, not every sports car can boast such an engine: the twelve-cylinder V-twin engine tamed as many as 612 horses. The volume is 6 liters. But the real killer is the torque - 1000 Newtons per meter! On such a car, you can drive on absolutely any off-road without any problems. Both versions are equipped with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic, with which you can shift gears yourself whenever you want. It also has 3 modes of operation.

For a fee in our country, the Gelendvagen can be modified with various gadgets. The basic version has power accessories, a steering wheel with many functions, a safety package, climate control, heated seats and many different sensors.

The updated 2018-2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV made its debut at the Detroit Auto Show, which traditionally opens its doors in January. The car in the body of the W463, which has been leading its history since 1990, has gone through another modernization, which almost did not affect the external design, but seriously affected the interior decoration, equipment and technical equipment of the model. The new Mercedes Gelendvagen 2018-2019 will go on sale in June of this year at a price of 107,040 euros (about 7.37 million rubles). This is how much the G 500 version with a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine producing 422 hp will cost in Germany. power and 610 Nm of torque. The cost of diesel and "charged" (Mercedes-AMG G 63) modifications will be announced later. It is still planned to assemble the new Mercedes Gelandewagen at the plant in Graz, Austria.

New body: dimensions and cross-country ability

Without starting to change something drastically in appearance, the developers have thoroughly revised the power structure of the SUV. It is based, as before, on a ladder-type frame, but its rigidity has been increased by 55% - from 6537 to 10162 Nm / deg.

The frame of the new G-Class

The frame-matched body, which consists mainly of high-strength steels, received some aluminum elements - these are doors, hood and fenders. As a result of improvements, the new G-Class dropped 170 kg from its original weight, but at the same time retained a curb weight of more than two tons.

Body

During the update, the Mercedes Gelendvagen added in size - the length increased by 53 mm (up to 4715 mm), the width increased by 121 mm (up to 1881 mm). Ground clearance has increased by six millimeters, reaching 241 mm. The geometric cross-country ability of the body of the German all-terrain vehicle, albeit quite a bit, has improved: the approach angle was 31 degrees (+1), the ramp angle was 26 degrees (+2), the exit angle was 30 degrees (unchanged). The maximum wading depth has increased to 700 mm (+100 mm).

Spot edits to appearance

Mercedes designers very carefully approached the correction of the appearance of a charismatic and still successfully sold SUV (about 20 thousand units sold in 2016). The new model has retained the classic profile and characteristic chopped forms, returning to the military past of the car. Also, branded "chips" have not gone away - a flat windshield, a towering hood, lurid door handles with buttons, external door hinges, a spare tire enclosed in a casing on the fifth door.

Photo Mercedes G-class 2018-2019

However, there are plenty of innovations on the body of the modernized Mercedes G-Class, even if not all of them are easily identified during a cursory examination. First of all, the novelty is given out by a redesigned nose part of the body, which has acquired LED headlights and a new bumper with corners smoothed for the sake of increasing pedestrian safety. Finding other differences from a little more difficult, but a careful look can easily detect a different location of the gas tank hatch (now located on the right above the rear wing), the absence of seals on the windshield, the disappearance of air ducts on the front fenders, rounded door corners. Another nuance is that the body parts of the new Gelendvagen are fitted more carefully, so the gaps between them are now minimal.

New stern design

The tweaked contours of the SUV did not affect its aerodynamic characteristics. The Cx coefficient for the new G-Wagen is the same as for the previous version of the model - 0.54.

Large-scale reorganization of the salon

If on the outside Gelendvagen remained 100% recognizable, then inside it was literally transformed in every detail. At the same time, it is curious that the interior modification of perhaps the most “masculine” car was managed by a female designer, Lilia Chernaeva. It is not surprising that during the development, the bias was made towards manufacturability and comfort, however, in the new vision, there was a place for clumsy and even rude elements that do not let us forget that we have before us the interior of a brutal SUV, and not a sedan or coupe. But first things first.

First, let's focus on the thoroughly redrawn front panel, in the design of which there are a lot of borrowings from the latest Mercedes innovations - sedans and. For example, a new steering wheel with a convenient gearbox control joystick, obviously, got Gelendvagen from the flagship four-door. As for the round ventilation deflectors that replaced the archaic rectangular ones, they no doubt migrated from. In general, the panel as a whole and the center console in particular began to look much more stylish thanks to the appearance of modern information displays and button blocks.

Photo of the interior of the Gelandewagen in the basic configuration

But let's make a reservation right away that two advanced 12.3-inch screens, combined into a single block and placed under one glass, rely not on all versions of the new G-class, but only on expensive ones. In the initial version, the car is equipped with a classic dashboard with arrow indicators. But the control panel for the Comand Online multimedia system is present in all trim levels and is located on a completely updated inter-passenger tunnel, which got rid of the gearshift lever (now the gears are switched on the steering column) and the handbrake handle (the electric parking brake is now used). Unloading the tunnel also made it possible to organize a double-leaf box armrest and a pair of cup holders. Only the handrail for the front passenger and three catchy differential lock control buttons on the console (located exactly between the air vents) remind of the old Gelik in the cabin of the new model.

Photo salon top version

The top trim levels of the new Mercedes G-Class will please you with an unprecedented abundance of available equipment. In addition to the tandem of 12.3-inch screens, the equipment list includes several trim options using high-quality materials (leather, alcantara, wood, aluminum), fully electrified Active Multicontour Seat front seats (heating, massage, ventilation, adjustable lateral support), three-zone climate control -control, wireless charging of smartphones, Burmester premium acoustics with 16 speakers.

Armchairs of the first row

All the above improvements are good, but the main positive result of the update in relation to the Gelendvagen cabin is still to be recognized as an increase in its size, and as a result, the amount of free space in both rows. First of all, the front landing pattern has changed - now the riders will not feel cramped in the shoulders, and the driver will receive additional space for the right leg, so that he can comfortably manipulate the pedals (surprisingly, there were problems with this in the pre-reform car). The increase in the comfort of the front passengers has a numerical expression: the increase in the leg area was 38 mm, the same amount became more spacious in the shoulder area.

rear seats

More comfort and hospitality are now ready to offer the rear seats of the Mercedes Gelendvagen. Firstly, second-row passengers will immediately feel more freedom due to the fact that the distance between the backs of the front and rear seats has increased by as much as 150 mm, and an additional 27 mm of headroom has appeared in the shoulder area. Secondly, the sofa itself has become much more comfortable, it is equipped with adjustable backs and a central armrest, behind which there is a hatch for long lengths. And, finally, thirdly, the rear passengers will receive a personal climate control panel for use (three-zone “climate” is not available for all versions) and roomy pockets on the doors.

Specifications Mercedes Gelandewagen 2018-2019

Specialists from the Mercedes-AMG division worked on the chassis of the new Gelendvagen. They completely revised the old design, as a result of which the SUV acquired an independent two-lever front mounted directly in the frame (a subframe was used before). At the rear, a continuous bridge was installed on the car, complemented by four levers and a Panhard rod.

Chassis Mercedes Gelendvagen

The drive of the novelty, of course, is complete. The transfer box is combined with the gearbox, there is a reduction gear (ratio 2.93) and a lock of three differentials (the central differential is mechanical with an electronically controlled lock-up clutch). Standard thrust is distributed between the front and rear axles in a ratio of 40/60. You can change the driving mode using the Dynamic Select switch, which provides five driving programs: Comfort, Sport, Eco, Individual and G-Mode. When choosing one or another mode, the settings for the operation of the motor, gearbox, electric power steering and adaptive shock absorbers are adjusted. The inclusion of any of the locks or "lowering" initiates the forced activation of "G-Mode" regardless of the current position of the selector.

From the first days of sales, the new Gelandewagen will be offered in just one version - the Mercedes-Benz G 500. Under the hood of such a car, a 4.0 V8 petrol turbo unit with a return of 422 hp will be prescribed. and 610 Nm. It will be paired with a nine-speed automatic 9G-Tronic. According to the manufacturer, the average fuel consumption of the G500 should fluctuate around 11.1 liters per 100 km.

By the end of 2018 - the beginning of 2019, the line of G-class modifications will be replenished with a “charged” Mercedes-AMG G 63 with a 612-horsepower V8 engine and a diesel version with a 2.9-liter “six” (estimated G 400d index).

New model Gelendvagen 2018 model year was a continuation of the glorious tradition of technical excellence and the legendary square shape of the body. Despite the increase in the dimensions of the SUV, thanks to high-strength steel and aluminum, it was possible to significantly reduce the total weight. To the delight of all Gelika fans, this is still a frame model with a non-split axle at the back.

German engineers essentially created a new car while retaining all the legendary attributes of the legendary SUV. Like 40 years in a row before, Gelendvagen will be assembled exclusively in Austria at the Magna Steyr plant. And now we will tell you more about all the features of the model.

The appearance of the "Gelendvagen" of the new generation at first glance, little has changed, but if you carefully look at the details, you understand that everything is completely new. The doors no longer have sharp corners, they are neatly rounded. The front bumper is designed with pedestrian safety in mind. Simple round headlights received a high-tech LED filling. The width of the body has increased by 12 centimeters, and the length by more than 5. Naturally, the track has increased to make the body more stable. The flat windshield is still straight, but if it was previously inserted with a rubber seal, now it is glued in, like on all modern cars. The rear lights have retained their simple and concise form, but now they are fully LED. The spare wheel, as before, hangs on the back door. See photos of the updated model below.

Salon of the new "Gelika" became simply cosmic. The central instrument panel is now fully digital, next to a huge touch screen, which together forms an unrealistically large multimedia board. There were shift paddles. Ergonomics has been completely revised. The front seats and rear sofa have changed their location and shape to provide maximum comfort. The control lever of the 9-speed automatic gearbox looks like a steering wheel from futuristic fantasies. Air duct deflectors also hint at their extraterrestrial origin.

The main technical changes of the new Gelendvagen

Reinforced frame 9-speed automatic transmission Front independent suspension Lightweight body

Specifications Gelendvagen 2018-2019

With an increase in dimensions, the new body was able to lighten by 170 kilograms, while the rigidity was increased from 6,537 to 10,162 Nm / deg. Significant weight reduction will seriously affect not only the reduction in fuel consumption, but also the improvement of dynamic performance.

The transmission remained completely off-road. In addition to the latest 9-band automatic gearbox, the rear axle and the electronically controlled mechanical transfer case that transmits torque to the front gearbox have been retained. The mechanical center differential divides the moment asymmetrically - 40:60 in favor of the rear axle.

The front suspension has changed from dependent to fully independent, which will make the car more stable in corners. The worm gear was replaced with a modern electric power steering rack.

Despite a serious alteration of the chassis, it was possible to further increase the ground clearance. Front 270 mm, under the bottom 241 mm and a little less under the rear axle gearbox. The depth of the ford to be overcome has increased to 700 mm! Angles of entry and exit are 31° and 30°.

Naturally, the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class received a lot of electronic systems. Thanks to a new steering system, transmission options and shock absorbers with variable stiffness. The owners of "Gelika" will have to choose a driving mode: Comfort, Sport, Eco, Individual and G-Mode. The last G-Mode is for off-road driving in difficult conditions.

Price and equipment Mercedes-Benz G-Class 2018

Despite major changes in technical terms, the price of new items has not increased significantly. If earlier for the old “Gelik” G 500 in Germany they asked for 106,700 euros, then for a new one you need to pay 107,400 euros. That is, cheaper versions of an SUV with a 6-cylinder 2.9-liter diesel engine will cost about 80 thousand euros. In Germany, sales of the car will start in the spring, the model will be brought to Russia only in the summer.

Few people may not think that the capabilities of the “charged” AMG versions of the Mercedes-Benz G-class are not enough, but gourmets from the German brand’s court tuning studio in 2013 truly surprised the world by creating a six-wheeled “monster” in the likeness of military pickups, but with an eye on civic rich. The three-axle G63 AMG 6 × 6 (this is its official name) was produced until 2015 in small series, and several copies settled in Russia.

The front part of the Gelendvagen 6x6 in the pickup solution repeats in its design the “face” of a traditional SUV, but its feed is unique - with two pairs of wheels on each side and a body. The car looks somewhat awkward, but you can’t refuse it in impressiveness and power.

The length of the Mercedes G63 AMG 6 × 6 is set at 5875 mm, height - 2280 mm, width - 2110 mm. The wheelbase of the pickup is stretched to 4220 mm, and its clearance under the bottom is an impressive 460 mm. The weight of the "German" in the stowed state is a little less than 4 tons - 3850 kg.

The interior of the six-wheeled SUV is unified in front with the decoration of the standard Gelendvagen - a steering wheel with control elements, a modern instrument cluster with a color display, a massive center console with a multimedia center screen towering above it and luxurious finishing materials.

A feature of the G63 AMG 6 × 6 is the layout of the cabin with four individual seats, endowed with electric adjustments, heating, ventilation and a massage function.

Specifications. The huge pickup is powered by a 5.5-litre bi-turbocharged V8 petrol unit that unleashes 554 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 760 Nm of peak torque generated from 2,000 to 5,000 rpm.
The unit is combined with a 7-band “automatic” and a unique all-wheel drive technology with five differentials (an interaxle between the third and second axles and an interwheel of the third axle are added to the basic three) and the distribution of potential in the following parts - 30:40:30.

Despite the “monstrous” mass, the Gelandewagen-AMG 6 × 6 accelerates to the first hundred in 6 seconds, gaining 160 km / h to the limit and “eating” an average of 22 liters of gasoline in combined mode.

This SUV is also capable of much off-road: the depth of the ford to be overcome is 100 cm, the exit angle is 54 degrees, the entry angle is 52 degrees.

The three-axle architecture of the G-class pickup truck was taken as the basis for the three-axle Gelendvagen 6x6. The car is equipped with a dependent suspension based on trailing arms and with Panhard rod on all axles. Disc brakes with ventilation are installed on six wheels, and the steering system is supplemented by hydraulic booster.

Prices. The G63 AMG 6 × 6 entered the market in a limited edition, and in 2015 its production was completed. As for the cost, the SUV was offered to Russian buyers for at least 24 million 500 thousand rubles, and to European buyers for 451,010 euros. At the same time, in the arsenal of the "6-wheeler" there is a rich list of equipment, not much different from that of the "top" versions of the four-wheeled "Gelendvagen".

Mercedes-Benz G–class is a series of cross-country vehicles.

Gradually aging veteran Gelandewagen ("Gelendvagen") (Mercedes G-class) has been produced since 1979, but is not yet going to "retire". Its production will be curtailed no earlier than 2005. A small demand for these rather expensive cars, which are distinguished by enviable durability and maneuverability, entails a relative constancy of the design and a minimum of changes. G-class models (chassis code W463 and W461 for 290GD TD model only) have changed little over the past 2-3 years.

The decision to develop an SUV was made in 1972. The first wooden layout was ready in April 1973, and a metal prototype appeared a year later. Uncomplicated rectangular shapes, hollowed out according to wooden models, turned out to be so versatile that they survived without significant changes to this day: a spar frame, solid front and rear axles, an all-wheel drive transmission with a demultiplier, a folding soft top, removable door sides, a windshield lowering onto the hood, spartan interior. The first production car of the 460 series went to the German Federal Border Service in February 1979. Shortly thereafter, orders were received from other countries in Europe and Asia for this “off-road vehicle” - and this is how it can be translated from the German “Gelandewagen”. Small-scale production made it possible to fulfill special orders. For example, generals from Indonesia ordered cars without doors, but with huge scissors on the front bumper to cut barbed wire. Cars were built for foresters, fire protection, ambulances. The unique Popemobile, an armored car for the Pope, also saw the light of day. Modifications were made to the 230G, 240GD, 280G and 300GD series 460.

In 1980, modifications appeared with a hard top, as well as with a short and long base. A year later, the design of Gelandewagen was updated, offering a protective grille on the headlights, a removable hard top, automatic transmission, air conditioning and slightly different equipment.

In 1982, carburetors gave way to fuel injection on 2.3-liter gasoline engines. And the very next year, the company's engineers carried out the second modernization of the car, for the first time presenting its "civilian" version: metallic paint, 5-speed gearbox, reinforced brakes, air conditioning, comfortable seats. Convertible instead of the previous removable awning, got a folding top. Thus, the military machine was gradually brought up to the norms of civilization. New engines appeared, standard equipment included lockable differentials (1985), a catalytic converter for exhaust gases on the G230 version (1986), power windows (1987) and other equipment. Over time, the share of civilian vehicles caught up with military orders, and later increased to 75%. Over the years, the production of a short-wheelbase van was discontinued, a new modification 250GD was released, and for the 300GD version a new OM617 engine. In 1989, in honor of the 10th anniversary of the founding of Gelandewagen, a modification of the 230 GE Classic was released.

The new "463rd" series was presented at the motor show in Frankfurt, in 1990 it went into production in modifications 230GE, 300GE, 250GD and 300GD. Modernization somewhat ennobled this too “serious” car. A year later, the leaders of the joint venture decided to discontinue the production of the 460th series and almost immediately presented the 461st with a new 2.9-liter turbodiesel. Cruise control began to be installed on cars, a stainless steel spare wheel cover, and wood began to be used in interior trim. The shape and upholstery of the seats were improved, the doors received comfortable armrests, various servo drives appeared (side windows and sunroof, central locking and remote adjustment of exterior mirrors), a powerful heating system with 4 operating modes, which can be supplemented with a programmable autonomous heater. In the same year, the 100,000th Gelandewagen was produced.

In 1994, following the advent of the 500GE modification, the 463 series was upgraded and the G320 modification was released with a 3.2-liter 6-cylinder gasoline engine with 211 hp, which accelerates to 100 km / h in 12.1 s . On the highway, you can squeeze 173 km / h out of the car. The motor is perfectly balanced and very durable. In the same year, cars received ventilated disc brakes on the front wheels, central locking of door locks, and an immobilizer.

Externally, the car retained the features of an army SUV, and also inherited an extremely strong body, chassis and reliable engines. Three body options are possible: most often there are expensive five-door versions, there is also a 3-door on a short base and with a convertible body. A five-door body in a modification with two additional seats on the sides of the trunk can carry seven people, moreover, it is also the most comfortable, because. thanks to the long wheelbase, it rides very smoothly even on bad roads. The three-door version looks more dynamic, although it has cramped rear seats that are not very comfortable to climb into. It is more comfortable in the city and outperforms the long-wheelbase version off-road. Carrying capacity reaches 620 kg (on the roof no more than 150 kg and a trailer weighing no more than 2.6 tons) and trunk volume from 745 to 1730 liters. "Gelendvagen" - a convertible differs from the usual convertible in that only passengers in the back seat are open to "all winds", while the driver and front passenger are covered on the sides by ordinary doors with rigid window frames. On machines manufactured before 1991, the awning had to be folded and raised manually. Later, the shape of the central pillars of the body was slightly changed, and at the same time, in 1996, an electric roof appeared. The open Gelendvagen is one of the few convertibles that can be driven all year round. The car is equipped with a very powerful heater, so even the rear passengers in severe frost will hardly feel the difference between a convertible with an awning instead of a roof and a conventional three-door.

For the G-class until 1996, a range of reliable engines was offered from a low-power 2.3 liter to the mighty G500, which were produced from the 93rd and were used in parallel on ordinary Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. The G230 model was equipped with a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine. All the same, four cylinders are not enough for a heavy frame jeep: a maximum speed of 150 km / h and acceleration from standstill to 100 km / h at the Zhiguli level takes 18.5 seconds. But this modification is very economical: the average fuel consumption is 12l/100km. Best of all, the 230th engine fits relatively light three-door versions.

A powerful and prestigious engine for the Gelendvagen was released in a limited edition of 1,000 pieces in 1993 - the G500 with a mighty five-liter V8. To make the V8 feel better off-road, it was derated from 326 to 265 forces. Torque at low speeds has become truly inexhaustible. In the mid-90s, it was one of the fastest SUVs. The maximum speed of the G500 reached 190 km / h, and the speedometer needle traveled to the “100” mark in just 7.7 seconds. However, at the same time, the car is not inclined to save: 25 l / 100 km is quite normal fuel consumption for the G500. V8 engines are considered the most reliable and durable among Mercedes engines.

One of the most affordable and unpretentious variants of the G-class of the 90s is the G300D. Naturally aspirated 3-liter naturally aspirated 6-cylinder diesel engine with 136 hp. very good for off-road. A solid stock of traction at low speeds is enough for energetic accelerations in the city, but on the highway the G300D is inferior to other Gelendvagens. The maximum speed of the car reaches only 165 km / h. Average fuel consumption is 7.5 l/100 km.

A very economical G350TD jeep differs from the “three hundredth” engine not only in an increased working volume, but also in turbocharging. The power of the turbodiesel is 150 hp. The maximum speed reaches 175 km / h, and acceleration to a hundred takes 15 seconds. For every 100 km, a turbodiesel burns about 14 liters of diesel fuel.

In 1996, new headlights appeared on the Gelendvagen, and airbags entered the "standard". At the same time, a modification of the G300 Turbodiesel was presented, which replaced two versions at the same time - the G300D and G350TD. The turbocharged engine develops 177 forces, so that in the city and on the highway the G300TD is practically not inferior to the gasoline Gelendvagens: it takes 12.5 seconds for a turbodiesel jeep to reach 100 km / h. On the highway, he is able to develop almost 180 km / h.

Since 1997, on the very popular 463 series G320 gasoline engine, instead of the previous inline sixes, Mercedes began to use a more modern V6. This engine is softer and quieter than its predecessor. His work is practically not felt on the controls. In addition, it is more economical: the average fuel consumption of the second generation G320 is about 13 l/100 km compared to the previous 17 l/100 km. Torque and power (211 hp) remained the same. In the same year, a 5-speed automatic transmission and a new G290 GD turbodiesel appeared.

1998 was marked by the appearance of a modernized version of the G500, and a year later, the anniversary modification of the G500 Classic was released, which was released in a limited edition. The G500 Classic differs from ordinary cars in a dark purple color that can change its shade depending on the lighting, bumpers painted in the same color and exterior mirror housings, polished alloy wheel rims, a spare wheel cover made of stainless steel, an abundance in interior trim, leather and wood, as well as a heated rear sofa. The exclusive SUV in the maximum configuration has a chrome grille and sills, and the large front “turn signals” and taillights are made colorless.

The new generation was presented in Paris in September 2000. Externally, the updated G-Class is distinguished primarily by white turn signal lenses on the front and side of the car, two-tone rear lights, and decorative stripes on moldings. The V8-powered G 500 and G 400 CDI are further enhanced by silver-coloured 18-inch alloy wheels with high-gloss trim caps, chrome-plated radiator fins and a car-colored bumper.

Since December 2000, the G-Class has been supplied with the innovative COMAND control and display system, audio system, CD player, navigation system, TV and other functions combined in one device. On the G 400 CDI and G 500 with V8 engine, this multifunctional device is included as standard. In addition, G-Class owners can benefit from advanced GPS features such as dynamic destination guidance based on current traffic reports, the TELEAID automatic emergency call system or the TELEDIAGNOSE system. For the first time, on request, the G-Class can be equipped with the innovative LINGUATRONIC voice control system that controls the telephone and audio system.

The G-class is quite comfortable inside. Having opened the car with an electronic ignition key, the steering wheel automatically rises to facilitate entry (steering wheel adjustment appeared only in 1999, on earlier Gelendvagens the steering column is stationary). Even greater comfort is provided by the updated front seats with electric adjustment in length and height. The high seating position of the driver is also very convenient in the city, where most of the Gelendvagens driving on our roads are used. The standard programming scheme saves individual seat and steering wheel settings. As soon as the driver removes the electronic ignition key, the steering wheel automatically rises without preventing the driver from getting out of the car. The steering wheel remains in this position until it returns. Steering type "screw - ball nut", of course, is equipped with hydraulic booster. The car masterfully turns on the spot, the front wheels, with the steering wheel completely turned out, practically lie on their side, allowing the huge car to perform unthinkable maneuvers.

Due to the very large glass area, visibility in an SUV is quite sufficient, only the back door with wide pillars, small glass and a spare wheel spoils the impression. The situation is saved by large rear-view mirrors located on the doors, which are equipped with electric drives as well as all side windows.

The interior of the Gelendvagen can be made in two styles, the main difference between them is the design of the front panel, center console and tunnel with wood of different species. Already in the basic configuration, any G-class looks quite representative: high-quality fabric upholstery of seats and doors, air conditioning, power accessories, front airbags, ABS. A more expensive option provides leather upholstery. The G-Class also features a redesigned instrument panel with modern switches, a clearly visible instrument cluster and a practical center console, which also includes an armrest and a storage compartment between the front seats. A huge leather-wrapped steering wheel with an integrated airbag does not block the instrument cluster. Characteristic of the instrument cluster is the large central display, through which the driver can program individual settings. Such a display is controlled using illuminated buttons located on the multifunction steering wheel, which is also connected to the audio system and telephone. The wide tunnel between the front seats, in addition to the walnut insert, carries the control levers for the automatic transmission and transfer case. The transfer case G 320 is fully synchronized and has a locking center differential, it, like the locking axle differentials, can be engaged at any speed using the buttons on the front panel. The automatic five-speed transmission is standard on all G-class engine variants. New is the practical soft-touch gearshift system, with which the individual gear ranges of the "D" position are shifted by lightly pressing the selector lever in the left or right direction. The control of the fully synchronized reduction gear of the transfer case, which provides even more traction on rough terrain or when operating a vehicle with a trailer, has been perfected by Mercedes-Benz engineers thanks to the electrical system. A downshift can now be engaged by pressing a button on the center console.

In the 2001 G-Class, sensors control the windshield wipers, exterior lights and rearview mirror: a rain sensor that varies the wiper interval depending on the amount of rain, a light sensor on the windshield that controls the headlights and tail lights when it gets dark. the lights are switched on automatically – all of this is standard equipment, as is the rear-view mirror with automatic anti-dazzle adjustment.

Climatic comfort in the G-Class cabin is enhanced by an advanced sensor-controlled automatic climate control system, separate thermal management for the driver and front passenger side, swiveling air vents in the rear, and a dust filter.

Models are available with three engine options: G 320 with a V6 engine producing 215 hp. s., G 500 with a V8 engine - 296 hp, G 400 CDI with a 250 hp eight-cylinder diesel engine equipped with common-rail direct injection, a liquid charge air cooler and two turbochargers. The maximum speed of the car is 180 km/h.

More comfortable and equipped cars of the W463 type are equipped with diesel and gasoline engines with a working volume of 3.0-5.4 liters with a capacity of 177-354 hp. and only hydromechanical 5-speed "automatic"". A new modification of the G400 CDI has appeared with a 4.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine with a capacity of 250 hp. The Type 461 290GD TD retains the look of the 80s, is noticeably cheaper and designed for tough road conditions. In addition to the 3- and 5-door station wagon, a cargo-passenger van and even a chassis (for a pickup truck or other body) with a gross weight of 4100 kg are provided. The 290GD TD powertrain includes a 2.9-litre direct-injection turbocharged inline 5-cylinder diesel engine with 120 hp. and hydromechanical 4-speed “automatic”.

The G-class is still one of the best "rogues" in the world. The only off-road vehicle equipped with an automatic traction control system. A sturdy transmission with three differentials (rear, center and front, which are switched on by the keys on the center console), blocking together and separately, allows you to get out of hopeless mud and snow ambushes - as long as at least one wheel out of four clings even slightly to any hard surface, the machine will overcome. At the same time, Gelandewagen almost does not require special off-road driving skills, in the city it pleases with confident movement, and when driving over rough terrain, complete control over the car. The behavior of the jeep on asphalt due to the suspension of the 463, which has rigid front and rear axles, coil springs on rubber cushions, telescopic shock absorbers and an anti-roll bar on the front axle, gives good marks and does not allow us to call the Mercedes-Benz G-class a “parquet jeep” ".

The Gelendvagen has ventilated disc brakes in the front, and drum brakes in the rear with automatic brake force adjustment. In a difficult road situation, the ABS will come to the aid of the driver.

Tuning studio AMG has presented the most powerful version of the G-class SUV. The AMG specialists equipped the SUV with a 5.4-liter V8 engine with a compressor from the S 55 AMG model. The power of this power unit is 500 hp.

In 2008, the Mercedes G-class received a restyling, as a result of which the appearance of the model was updated, although the car did not lose its “recognizable” appearance. New steel grille, front optics and taillights. There are more changes inside. The steering wheel, center console, and dashboard have become different. In particular, the analog scales have changed, which are now finished in chrome.

The range of power units is traditionally not extensive and is limited to two petrol and one diesel options. A budget 3.0-liter turbodiesel develops 224 hp. The new 5.5-liter gasoline engine has a capacity of 388 hp. All motors are equipped only with a 7-speed automatic gearbox 7G-Tronic. Since 2008, all versions of the G-Class have been sold in Russia, including convertibles.

The list of equipment of the upgraded G-Class includes a new audio system with Bluetooth and a 6-disc DVD changer (for diesel versions) or an upgraded Comand APS system (navigation, DVD, built-in GSM phone, optional Hi-Fi class audio system with Harman Kardon Logic components7 , Linguatronic voice control system and TV tuner). The list of equipment also includes the new second-generation 4ETS traction control systems and the integrated ESP Plus system, four airbags, separate climate control, heated seats, full power accessories, remote central locking, power steering, multifunction steering wheel with combined leather and wood trim , leather interior, alloy wheels, electric sunroof and much more.

The design of the G-Class has not changed much in 30 years: a powerful steel body with a spar frame, continuous front and rear axles on springs and trailing arms, permanent all-wheel drive with a symmetrical center differential and the ability to mechanically lock any of the three differentials. The G-Class's off-road capabilities, coupled with the legendary reliability of its time-tested design, are almost unique among today's off-road vehicles.

In 2012, Mercedes-Benz carried out the 2nd restyling of the third generation G-class (W463). The model received cosmetic updates to the exterior. It is difficult to recognize the restyled version of 2012 at first glance: the SUV received new side mirror housings and LED blotches in the head optics. In addition, the versions of the AMG studio are equipped with a different grille.

Changes in the interior are much more ambitious: the SUV received an almost new interior. Significantly redesigned center console, steering wheel and dashboard. The SUV is equipped with two monitors - one on the center console, the other between the instrument wells, as well as the Comand multimedia system with voice control. The G-class was equipped with a new ESP system, a rear-view camera, a blind spot monitoring system and adaptive cruise control.

The list of power units includes a three-liter diesel V6 with a capacity of 211 horsepower (540 Nm), a 388-horsepower 5.4-liter gasoline engine, as well as two engines for AMG modifications - a 544-horsepower "eight" (760 Nm) with twin turbocharging with a volume of 5.5 liters and a 12-cylinder six-liter engine with a capacity of 612 hp. for the flagship version of the G 63 AMG.

Mercedes G-class has rich equipment, which includes: full power accessories, rear view camera, multimedia system, cruise control, climate system, luxury audio system.
