Cruiser 80 off-road. New comment

23.09.2019

Thanks to the smooth contours characteristic of passenger cars, the LC 80 looks very favorably with most SUVs of its time. But not only an attractive appearance played a role in the popularity that this model, of course, became the main hit of Toyota, was to gain. First of all, it is, of course, rich equipment and multi-purpose. The new Land Cruiser could be used both as a workhorse, and as a car for the whole family, and as a luxurious "cruiser" of the executive class. According to the tasks, it was possible to choose the standard STD package, the extended GX or VX, the luxury version, which provided for the presence of a velor or leather interior, alloy wheels, an electric sunroof, full power accessories, dual climate control, heated front seats, a refrigerator, a CD player , winches, etc. The VX-Limited Active Vacation package, equipped with a fold-out bedroom with curtains, a gas stove and even a sink, is ideal for travelers.

For the Land Cruiser 80, a wide range of in-line six-cylinder powertrains was intended. Petrol engine 3F-E (4 l) with a power of 155 hp - not the most common option (produced before 1993), extremely reliable, but very voracious - fuel consumption in mixed mode is about 24 l / 100 km. This engine was replaced by a more modern in all respects 1FZ-FE (4.5 l) with 24 valves and a power of 215 hp, with which fuel consumption is 17.5 l / 100 km. Diesel connoisseurs could choose either the naturally aspirated 1HZ (4.2 l) with 135 hp or the turbocharged 1HD-T (4.2 l) with 165 hp, which since 1995 has been replaced by the 1HD-FT with 170 hp

All "eighties" Land Cruisers were equipped with dependent spring front and rear suspension with solid axles attached to a welded frame. We note the high reliability and durability of this design, which is almost not inferior to the machines of the 60th and 70th series. Expensive versions of the LC 80 were equipped with a suspension with adjustable stiffness. Four-wheel drive was offered in different versions. Part-Time - hard-wired front-wheel drive, no center differential, with freewheels in the front hubs and a reduction gear. Or systems with permanent FullTime all-wheel drive - with a center differential and a hard forced lock, as well as (as an option) front and rear differential locks. Depending on the configuration, Land Cruiser came with both mechanical and automatic transmissions.

The first 80-series Land Cruisers demonstrate the standard approach to safety inherent in previous generations of vehicles: only belts and a safety steering wheel are equipped. As it was released, the model received additional equipment: at first, the ABS system was offered only as an option, but since 1996 it has been included in the standard equipment of some trim levels along with airbags for the driver and front passenger. For better impact absorption in a collision, pipes have been integrated into the doors.

The only and relative, of course, the disadvantage of the Land Cruiser 80 series can be called a high cost, despite the fact that cars of this generation have long since passed into the category of used ones. The explanation for this is quite simple: after all, this frame SUV is one of the most reliable cars and, even taking into account obsolescence, is still highly valued on the market.

Toyota Land Cruiser has become not only one of the best-selling SUVs in the history of the automotive industry, but also a cult car among fans of off-road sports in different countries. This is not an accident - with its reliability, power and reliability, the jeep really looks like an epic hero. Being the hero of a legend, the Land Cruiser 80 has earned many respectful and endearing nicknames. In Venezuela, the Land Cruiser 80 is called "Burbuja", that is, "Bubble", in Russia - "Corn".

If you want to sell a lot of SUVs, they must be such that they can be driven by avid jeepers and housewives

History of Toyota Land Cruiser 80

The first “non-square” modification in the history of the Land Cruiser appeared in 1989. The new jeep, which differed from the previous Land Cruiser 70 not only in a pleasant roundness of shape, but also in a noticeably improved interior, immediately became a bestseller. In addition to an extremely modern appearance by the standards of the early nineties, the next modification of the Land Cruiser was presented with a well-chosen and wide range of engines and transmission units. Clearly, Toyota has embraced the message that if you want to sell a lot of SUVs, they need to be able to be driven by avid Jeepers and housewives alike.

For this reason, two different transfer boxes were installed on the Land Cruiser 80, carrying out. For the first time in the history of the model, permanent all-wheel drive was endowed with “convenient” control - similar schemes are used in modern crossovers. For example, since 1992, a limited slip differential was installed in the rear axle of cars in the version with permanent all-wheel drive, which significantly improved the behavior of the car on asphalt, and the center differential lock was switched on automatically when switching to a downshift mode. In 1996, the technically advanced Land Cruiser 80 became the basis for the first luxury car with virtually no changes.

Technical features Land Cruiser 80

The Land Cruiser 80 can be purchased with one of four engines - two 4 and 4.5 liter petrols and two 4.2 liter diesels, turbocharged and non-turbocharged. By the way, naturally aspirated diesel 4.2, called 1 HZ, is a kind of idol of the jeep world. It is believed that this naturally aspirated diesel engine is one of the most enduring engines in the world. Off-road fans prefer cars with this engine. Combined with a strong, corrosion-resistant body, the powerful diesel makes the car an almost perfect preparation for building a competition jeep.

The most powerful engine is a 205-horsepower gasoline in-line "six". As a rule, versions with this engine belonged to the top-end configuration, which is characterized by a very rich set of options by the standards of the early 90s, which included two airbags, ABS, a panoramic sunroof, leather seats and alloy wheels.

Pros and cons of Toyota Land Cruiser 80

An absolute disadvantage in modern conditions is the consumption of a gasoline unit, which, when driving on a permanent all-wheel drive in the city, can reach 20 or even 25 liters per hundred kilometers. For this reason, the owners of the Land Cruiser 80 began to transfer cars to alternative fuels back in the late 90s, and today it is almost impossible to meet a gasoline copy without it. With modern gas prices in terms of gasoline, we can say that propane costs per 100 kilometers can be estimated at about 12-13 liters in gasoline equivalent, which is quite acceptable for such a large car.

The long nose of the Land Cruiser 80 takes some getting used to before you start to behave like it is customary behind the wheel of a golf-class hatchback, although the dynamics allow a lot

In terms of handling, the Land Cruiser 80 is not much inferior to the modern modification of the model. In general, we can say that the car is maneuverable even in city conditions, since the dynamics of powerful engines allows you to make quick changes, both in traffic jams and when driving in the stream. The only limitation in this sense is the huge hood that hides the in-line "six". The long nose takes some getting used to before you start to behave as it is customary behind the wheel of a golf-class hatchback. The Land Cruiser 80 was produced in a single body variant - a five-door station wagon, so in most surviving cars two folding additional seats are hidden in the trunk, easily turning it into a seven-seater minivan. The interior of the car has features that are also characteristic of modern representatives of the model: despite the external dimensions, there is not as much space inside as it might seem, and the roof, especially for those who are not used to frame SUVs, will seem too low.

Land Cruiser 80 in sport

In 1996, the Land Cruiser 80 won the Dakar Rally in two categories at once - in the main (1st place), and in the so-called “unmodified production class”, that is, among cars in the factory configuration.

Toyota Land Cruiser in Russia

The Toyota Land Cruiser 80 was one of the most desirable cars in the mid to late 90s. Especially many surviving specimens today are located in the Primorsky Territory. The reason for this is that from Japan, used Land Cruisers came to Russia with significantly lower mileage than from the USA, from where, mainly, left-hand drive specimens were brought. In general, we can say that in the late nineties, the Land Cruiser, like many other powerful SUVs, was a much more massive car - at that time, import duties were much more forgiving, and the transport tax (and the price of gasoline) did not exceed financial capabilities even those who lived on a fairly modest salary. In view of this, many copies of an extremely popular model were imported into Russia, and on the secondary market you can still find a “live” Land Cruiser 80 at a price of 100 to about 600 thousand.

Interesting facts about Toyota Land Cruiser 80

At the time of the creation of the Land Cruiser 80, the company decided to abandon the inscription TOYOTA, so for the first time in the history of the model, the nose of the car is decorated with a regular logo. Despite the fact that the official production of the model was completed in 1997, the new Land Cruiser 80 cars were produced in Venezuela until 2008 inclusive.

Figures and facts

In total, more than two million popular Land Cruiser 80 SUVs were produced and sold during the main production period.

Back in 1990, the Toyota auto concern released the Land Cruiser 80 - the best SUV ever produced by this company, which stirred up the entire 4x4 car market. Despite its decent age, the TLC 80 surpasses many modern crossovers in its technical characteristics. The years that have passed since the release of the car have not detracted from its popularity among motorists who value power, reliability and quality.

Exterior

The main difference between the Land Cruiser is its large dimensions. The manufacturer for such a car did not spare consumables, which is a huge advantage. It is difficult to call the largest car from the entire Toyota line attractive - outwardly, the company's best SUV resembles an army vehicle. However, despite its heaviness, it looks very solid, taking up a lot of space on the road.

Off-road lovers will appreciate the "TLK 80". The wheels of the car have a special tread pattern, which significantly increases the patency on difficult sections of the road. The body is somewhat raised above the frame, and a snorkel is located along the right windshield pillar. The trunk is placed on the roof and is designed for transportation. A ladder is installed on the rear door, which simplifies lifting onto the roof of the car.

Outwardly, the Land Cruiser looks angular, and the massive bumper "TLK 80" gives it brutality and masculinity. There are no thin and smooth lines here - this is an absolutely masculine car with rough, clear strokes.

Interior

The interior of "TLK 80" is designed at a fairly high level. Every little detail is carefully thought out, all the necessary devices are literally at hand. Interior trim is completely made of high quality black plastic. According to the feedback of the owners, even after many years of operation, the parts remain completely silent and stable.

Separately, it is worth noting the informative and convenient dashboard. Engine temperature, fuel level are marked on it. The downside is the lack of a tachometer, which many car owners complain about. The shift lever is very comfortable for the driver and easy to operate.

Gas engine

The TLC 80 gasoline power unit was developed taking into account all the requirements for this SUV by motorists. The engine has a long service life, is distinguished by reliability and high build quality. Two types of a six-cylinder engine with a volume of 4.5 liters and 24 valves were produced: carburetor and injection.

The power of the carburetor power unit is 197 horsepower. The absence of a catalyst and low enough allows you to fill a car with fuel equal to 92nd. At the same time, its quality does not play a special role, which can be considered a plus for those motorists who travel long distances. But, by the way, there is also a fly in the ointment: a rather complex design of the carburetor requires disassembling and cleaning the entire system once a year and a half, which results in a fairly tidy sum.

The power of the injection engine is slightly higher and amounts to 205 horsepower. This model is very whimsical and requires only high quality. However, it also has its advantages: a good injection system and a long service life (about 200 thousand kilometers).

In principle, a gasoline engine is not particularly expensive to maintain, however, you should immediately prepare for high fuel consumption: about 20-25 liters per hundred kilometers. Such gluttony, however, is understandable: after all, the bridges of the TLC 80 and its power are obligatory. The engine is silent and has a smooth ride, but for high-quality work it requires regular replacement of oil, filters and candles. These operations are carried out, as a rule, once per 100 thousand kilometers, including the replacement of drive belts. Every 40 thousand, according to the notes of the Land Cruiser owners themselves, they have to clean the radiator and replace the antifreeze.

diesel engine

Installed on the "TLK 80" diesel - a six-cylinder engine with a volume of 4.2 liters, which comes with both turbo and atmospheric inflation.

A car with a capacity of 136 horsepower was supplied to European markets, however, in domestic markets one could find a model of 130 horsepower, which was designed for diesel fuel of not the highest quality.

The turbocharged diesel has good dynamic characteristics and a power of 167 horsepower. Up to a hundred kilometers, the car accelerates in 12.3 seconds, while the maximum speed is 170 km / h.

Land Cruiser with a diesel engine is very widespread in Russia due to its unpretentiousness in maintenance, reliability, build quality and the ability to "digest" domestic fuel.

A feature of the diesel "TLK" is the presence of two batteries, a throughput meter or a spiral filament network, due to which there are no problems with engine operation at low temperatures. In winter, it is advisable to use special anti-gel additives that will avoid many troubles. The manufacturer recommends changing the fuel filter every 20 thousand kilometers - such a precaution will extend the life of the high pressure pump.

Vehicle handling

Despite the large dimensions and weight, the Land Cruiser boasts excellent dynamics and handling - it easily enters even the tightest turns. At a speed of 120 km / h, the car confidently holds the road and obeys the driver. It is provided quite powerful, however, it is practically “transparent” due to the driving front wheels. At speeds above 100 km / h, you can feel the reactive power steering.

A powerful suspension significantly softens vibrations and various road surface defects. Even when getting into serious pits for the driver and passengers, everything is limited to the smooth rocking of the TLC.

According to the reviews of many motorists, the technical characteristics of the Land Cruiser are chosen in such a way as to allow the car to feel confident both off-road and in the city. The installed shock absorbers can be controlled, which makes it possible to adjust the suspension and adjust it to individual driving characteristics.

Equipment

Initially, the Land Cruiser 80 was produced in several trim levels, ranging from a basic, “army” car to a comfortable and even luxurious SUV.

The simplest assembly is considered STD - an ideal car for hunting or fishing. It completely lacks electronics, the SUV is simplified to a minimum. There is not even an ABC system, which, by the way, is afraid of dirt as such. The package includes only air conditioning, a mechanical winch and a radio tape recorder. The interior is upholstered in vinyl, which is easy to clean with a damp cloth.

GX - more comfortable equipment, but without unnecessary frills. The exterior trim of the car boasts moldings and chrome, the interior is complemented by air conditioning, an electric package and a sunroof. The upholstery of the seats is already fabric, the floor is carpeted.

Prestigious and luxurious can be called the VX version, which includes all possible options that increase comfort. The interior is decorated with either velor or leather, the exterior is equipped with alloy wheels.

Price

At the moment, you can only buy a used Land Cruiser, and its cost may vary depending on the year of manufacture and general condition. The minimum price is 300 thousand, the maximum is about 700 thousand rubles for the last years of the model's release.

The owners of "TLK 80" notice that the cost of this miracle is fully justified by the quality. Despite the impressive mileage, the car is very reliable.

Design reliability

The basis of the Land Cruiser 80 is a fully dependent suspension, characterized by unpretentiousness, durability and long service life. Silent blocks wear out over time, which leads to the feeling that the car "floats" on the road, however, they are replaced no more than once every 180 thousand kilometers. Shock absorbers, springs and steering rods do not need to be replaced.

TLC has practically no weak points, especially if it is properly looked after. However, it is difficult to find a decent car at the moment - few people really monitor their transport, especially if it is operated off-road.

Possibility of tuning

Such a car requires an investment of a lot of time, money and effort. By the way, tuning "TLK 80" is also possible: as a rule, if the car is used for off-road trips, then they resort to strengthening the suspension, increasing ground clearance, installing moldings and other details.

Toyota Land Cruiser 80 is a great SUV that, despite its venerable age, can outperform many modern crossover models.

A rare car in our market was as popular as the Toyota Land Cruiser 80. A lot of engines, transmissions and several all-wheel drive options. True, the body type of the eightieth series was always the same - a five-door station wagon.

Those who were richer bought a new “kukuruzer” from an authorized dealer, Siberia and Primorye bought right-hand drive cars from the Japanese market with might and main. The most surprising thing is that even today, despite the huge selection of various off-road vehicles on the secondary market, the 80th is still in demand.

In front of me is a 1996 Land Cruiser 80 with the most powerful, 205-horsepower gasoline engine and all the bells and whistles imaginable for those years in the form of two airbags, ABS, a huge sunroof, leather interior and alloy wheels. They ask for 560 thousand rubles for everything.

Bulk carrier

The most surprising thing is that its appearance is not perceived as a terry auto-retro. A normal, adult "steamer", whose hood is the size of a typical children's sandbox. Everything else to match - they did not regret the iron. Judging by the stern nameplate, here we are dealing with permanent, not plug-in all-wheel drive. For a heavy machine, this is more of a plus than a minus.

The inspection began with an assessment of the condition of the body - after all, this “Kruzak” is already 14 years old. He spent the first three years in America, the last eleven in Russia, although you can't tell from him. The magnetic thickness gauge showed: the right front fender, the driver's door, the left rear door and the fender were repainted. However, there are no signs of rust or peeling paint - the body repair was carried out to the level. According to the reviews of servicemen, the “land cruisers” of this series are generally extremely tenacious in terms of corrosion, it’s not for nothing that hard off-road fans love them. By the way, body iron for the "eighties" in Moscow has been counted once or twice, so take care of your "Toyotas".

On the front bumper I found rough traces of contacts with the outside world, and on the back - a mole of the gas filler neck. No wonder: the vast majority of used gasoline "corn" converted to alternative fuels. This is due to the rather strong appetite of the 4.5-liter engine. Given the price of propane, you can ride happily ever after with such an engine.

All-season tires will still serve, but only in city conditions, sticking them in serious mud is like storming Everest in sneakers. But the luxurious chrome-plated kenguryatnik will have to be removed: it does not pass according to current safety standards.

Touch up...

If outwardly the car looks invigorating, then the interior gives out its age: the leather on the steering wheel is worn in places almost to the point of plastic. However, it is easy to mask this defect with a braid on the steering wheel.

The cushion of the front passenger seat is much worse: it is torn! Well, you can buy a tolerable interior for 18 thousand at a disassembly, or simply drape holes with covers of the “alcoholic T-shirt” style for 2500 re.

However, there is a reason to rejoice: the third row of seats was found in the trunk - two comfortable chairs with seat belts. In a good company, a couple of people are never superfluous! The dashboard with an abundance of buttons and levers strongly resembles a two-cassette Sharp of the late eighties. The head unit, by the way, has a cassette deck, although there is also a CD player.

I put the car on a lift. The frame has survived the blows of time, there are no serious pockets of rust, so its number (it is stamped behind the right front wheel) is easy to read.

The middle part of the muffler is welded, there is snot under the oil pan, and the crankshaft rear oil seal has clearly lost its tightness. But the crosses of the cardan shaft are generously lubricated. In general, the car is anywhere, even with oil streaks - they are not fatal. The price of a new seal is 264 rubles, but it’s better to change it yourself: it’s not cheap to disassemble half a car with someone else’s hands.

Now is the time to start the engine and test the veteran of the fight against Russian off-road on the go, because the speedometer already has 140 thousand miles, that is, more than 220 thousand kilometers! Moreover, it was not possible to diagnose the motor with modern means - my scanner did not “hook up” to the car. However, a specialized service for "cruisers" for quite divine 1200-1500 rubles will help you to rummage through the memory of the control unit.

Cruiser on the road

In motion, the "land cruiser" - this is how the name of the model is translated - surprisingly resembles a long-length limousine: it goes quietly, importantly, smoothly.

Despite the years, the automatic transmission conscientiously implements traction in all modes - with proper care, this unit is almost eternal. The only drawback of the short test was that the bare asphalt did not allow to reveal the mighty potential of permanent all-wheel drive .. It remains to take the owner's word that the “corner” is a beast-machine.

True, in the movement some kind of knock was heard from the right. If it comes to buying, this is an occasion for a more thorough check: permanent four-wheel drive repair is not cheap. On the other hand, I completely succumbed to the indescribable charm of this and, by today's standards, a luxurious all-terrain vehicle, offered at a very fair price.

Only turning on the air conditioner kept my head in the cold and kept me from wanting to immediately run to the bank for money. Still, in a big city, a real all-terrain vehicle has nowhere to show itself in all its glory, and rather strong dimensions will turn into eternal problems with parking. And it’s embarrassing to take up so much space in the stream, because the lion’s share of the time I plan to ride alone.

We should also not forget about the costs of maintaining the monster ... No, I won’t buy such a handsome man for myself, but I’ll definitely tell my friend about the car: he is an avid jeeper, and for this category of motorists, the eightieth “corner” is just right.

If the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 is an unrealizable dream for you and “weaving” is also too expensive, take a closer look at the good old Toyota Land Cruiser 80. In some ways it is even better than modern models. offroad world.

This model combines comfort, maneuverability and amazing endurance. Largely thanks to the "eighties" there was a phrase about the fact that "Toyota do not break down." Is it so? Of course not, everything can be broken, including even that which, in principle, does not break. So, what's in store for the new owner of the TLC 80? Given the advanced age of the model, anything can wait, so we will highlight only the typical points of application of money and attention.

RUST - PAST

The body and frame are very strong, anti-icing agents come off them like water off a duck's back. At the same time, there are several places where rust lives quietly and peacefully for years and does not move anywhere. You can find it on the frames of the rear side windows and on the air intake panel (this is the one from which the wiper drives come out). On the STD and GX versions, which have one large wicket-type door at the back, there will certainly be problems with the door hinges.

You can often hear about current windshields. However, the point here is a violation of technology when replacing them. Simply, the installers did not lubricate the sealing gum with a special sealant. It is not worth delaying the elimination of this leak. Water getting inside, over time, leads to problems with the electrical part. The electrics themselves are reliable, except that the retractable antenna turns sour from dirt. If the stove blows badly, then you do not need to buy a new motor. This is a clogged radiator of the heating system, because the design does not provide for a cabin filter. What else about the cabin should be noted? Salt can rot the pipes going to the second stove / air conditioner. So that one day a flood does not happen, it is worth cleaning the drain channels of the sliding sunroof.

The most pleasant and durable trim option is velor. True, it is not found on the utilitarian version with the STD index, where everything is exclusively vinyl. As for the leather interior, this is the prerogative of the top version of the VX. By the way, it’s not worth chasing the skin on purpose, it is slippery, cold and eventually becomes covered with unpleasant cracks.

INLINE SIX ONLY

The engines are represented by in-line six-cylinder units: gasoline, diesel and turbodiesel. Gasoline engines were like carbureted 3F-E 4.0 l

(155 hp), 1FZ-F 4.5 l (190 hp), and injection 1FZ-FE 4.5 l (205–215 hp). Naturally aspirated diesel 1HZ with a volume of 4.2 liters is presented in several modifications with a capacity of 120 liters or more. With. up to 135 l. With. Its turbo version was called 1HD-T 4.2 l (165 hp), and in the 24-valve version - 1HD-FT (170 hp).

Gasoline engines are considered eternal. And with moderate average annual runs, their operation costs no more than diesels. For example, in a diesel engine, you need to change the oil more often, and it fits in there ... 11 liters, against 8 liters in a gasoline engine. In addition, diesel engines have a timing belt drive, while gasoline engines have a chain drive that does not require replacement and maintenance.

As for diesels, despite their maintainable injection pump and lower fuel consumption, they can put a big pig. The fact is that it is very problematic to adjust fuel equipment in Russia. No, adjusting a worn out carburetor is also unrealistic, but buying a new one will cost a more or less sane amount - $ 300-400. Trouble can cause cracks in the receiving part of the muffler on the 1FZ-FE engine (due to a clogged first catalyst). Brewing them is pointless, only change.

NOT ONLY PERMANENT

In the transmission, two options are possible - permanent four-wheel drive (full-time 4WD) and plug-in (part-time 4WD). The front axle is in some way the weak link of the "eighty". On average, every 150 thousand km it is necessary to change its filling, including drives. You can only get rid of the replacement of oil seals, thrust bearings and "grenades", but this is a half measure. Moreover, in half of the cases it is worth immediately, to the heap, to repair or replace the axle gearbox with a new one.

This SUV can drive fast, 150–160 km/h are quite real speeds for it. However, those who like to drive the bridge will live noticeably less than 100 thousand km. Of course, with the beam of the bridge itself, if the stones are not uprooted with it, nothing can happen. Although on healthy wheels during side impacts, it is possible to bend the necks of the beam (followed by the turning balls). By the way, with non-sagging springs without a lift, wheels with a diameter of 32 inches stand up.

It is also necessary to monitor the seals, however, they can leak not only from old age, but also because of clogged breathers. Manual gearbox, transfer case and rear axle are not at risk. The automatic transmission is very reliable, and a small bump when shifting from third to fourth gear is not a reason to sound the alarm.

Cardan shafts and their crosses also go indefinitely, if you do not forget to put grease in their grease fittings at each MOT.

PARTS: TOYOTA LAND CRUISER 80

NOT REPAIRABLE

Fully dependent spring suspension with colossal travel is simple and tenacious. Silent blocks of the front and rear suspensions with a calm driving style do not require replacement up to 150-180 thousand. The wear of silent blocks is felt by the fact that the SUV begins to “float” along the road. Shock absorbers and tie rods are also not among the frequently purchased parts.

Oil leaks from the steering gear indicate that the "bobby is dead." Over time, the gearbox will have to be changed entirely. Trying to sort it out is a waste of money. For more than 10,000 km, such a repair is not enough. Checked multiple times. Even in the steering, there may be a power steering pump on the way. The life of the pump shortens the frequent holding of the steering wheel in extreme positions. Well, ignoring the fact that the power steering fluid is sometimes worth changing.

In general, the model has one or two weak points. But this is true only for moderately well-groomed specimens. Alas, you can look for such a car for a long, very long time. After all, the principle of “driving until it breaks down” is very common among our motorists. It is almost impossible to bring a running “eighty” into a decent trouble-free condition within a reasonable budget. Here are real examples. The first owner, who did scheduled maintenance every 10,000 km, had a car that covered 350,000 km. During this time, it was changed only consumables, silent blocks with shock absorbers and moved the front axle. Since then her story was in plain sight, it is known that before the next sale she ran another 200 thousand km, also without global cash injections and serious breakdowns. Here it must be added that all its operation took place in a calm mode and without off-road.

But in another “eighties” known to me personally, a whole sea of \u200b\u200bstrength and money was poured. This car has changed many owners and was used mainly off-road. Some atypical troubles regularly surfaced in him: either the brakes would leak, or the axle shaft bearing would jam.

FOR TROPHY HEAVY

Despite the very respectable age of the representatives of this model, they are still being stolen. So when buying, it’s worth breaking through the VIN not only according to the criminal base, but also in the auto shop according to the spare parts program. Often, under documents from STD, they stole and collected expensive VX. This is fraught with the fact that, even if there are no claims from the law, questions will arise with the purchase of spare parts. Since, due to the many modifications, it is not worth counting on the interchangeability of parts.

Thinking about buying, you need to understand that this is not a trophy, but an expeditionary SUV. Heavy, with a wheelbase of 2850 mm and decent overhangs, it does not feel like in its native element in serious off-road. Nevertheless, for trips associated with the exit from the asphalt, it is one hundred percent suitable. In addition, as brand experts say, this is the last real Land Cruiser with a colossal margin of safety, thick body metal and the same paintwork.

EXPERT OPINION

Andrey, owner of Toyota Land Cruiser 80:

– I bought this Land Cruiser 80 in the STD configuration with a 4.2-liter naturally aspirated diesel engine a year ago. The car was in a very neglected condition and therefore was sold very cheaply, for only $ 10,000. I immediately had to replace the cardan assembly and shake up the front axle. Changed it almost everything except the gearbox. Although the gearbox is not perfect, there is play, and at a speed of over 100 km / h it starts to buzz a little. Since he did everything himself, it cost about $ 1000 to put the car in order. The steering gear is leaking, but the leak is not progressing. In the gearbox, the hum of the input shaft is heard. It seems that the reason for this is that the previous owners traveled without oil. Otherwise, everything is fine, the engine is in good condition, although the car has certainly run more than 300,000 km. Of the unpleasant surprises, only one has happened so far. The alternator belt was stratified, and its piece fell under the front crankshaft oil seal. All the oil from the engine leaked out in just two minutes. It is good that this did not happen while driving, but in the parking lot. Immediately noticed and muffled.
