History of the Mercedes SLK

The Mercedes-Benz SLK is a two-seater coupe roadster with a folding roof. For the first time, the SLK model (platform type R170) was shown in April 1996 in Turin. The 1996 Mercedes-Benz SLK family included two models, the SLK200 and SLK230 Kompressor. In order to improve safety on cars, the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) dynamic stabilization system is standardly installed, the front axle stabilizer is reinforced, the rear axle is equipped with an additional stabilizer. To improve safety in frontal collisions, the spars are reinforced and the thickness of the rigid elliptical front wall of the body is increased; in case of a side collision, the strength of the body is increased, side airbags are installed in the doors. The unique design provides the same torsional and flexural rigidity with the roof up and down, resulting in near-ideal cornering behavior of the SLK.

The extended range includes the SLK200 Kompressor, SLK230 Kompressor and SLK 320. The 2.0-litre SLK200 Kompressor is equipped with a mechanically driven compressor that delivers 163 hp. Thanks to supercharging, the SLK 200 Kompressor accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds and has a top speed of 223 km/h. The new top model SLK 320 with V6 engine has high torque. With the same low emission levels as both four-cylinder SLK engines, the modern V6 engine, which Mercedes-Benz first installed on this car, also works. This engine has long proven itself in the Mercedes E-, M- and S-class passenger cars, as well as in the CLK models and the SL roadster. Equipped with three valves, two spark plugs per cylinder, low friction losses and manufactured using advanced lightweight materials, this six-cylinder engine is one of the most advanced engines in its class. In the SLK 320, its output is 160 kW/218 hp, and the maximum engine torque of 310 Nm from 3,000 rpm is a convincing testament to the car's almost sporty performance: the V6 Roadster reaches a top speed of 245 km/h. Gasoline consumption of just 11.1 liters per 100 km (NEFZ total consumption) proves the state of the art in this six-cylinder engine. The SLK 320 is equipped not only with the usual (for this engine) 5-speed “automatic”, but also with a mechanical 6-speed gearbox. With the latter, a rather light and compact car gained very good acceleration dynamics (acceleration time from standstill to 100 km / h was reduced to 6.9 s).

The engine and exhaust system of all SLK models are continuously monitored by an on-board diagnostic system. The system complies with the requirements of the EU-4 directive of the European Union, which will come into force in Europe from 2005, and with the help of a warning light on the combined engine monitoring instrument panel (“Check Engine”) informs the driver about a malfunction of any part of the exhaust tract.

A novelty in 2001 was the SLK32 AMG sports equipment with a new “compressor” engine with a capacity of 354 hp. This made it possible to bring the specific power of the machine to about 250 hp / t and significantly improve the dynamic qualities. The new SLK power unit includes a 3.2-liter 18-valve V6 with a Lysholm-type supercharger that allows you to create a boost pressure of up to 1.1 kg / cm3. Moreover, the “compressor” is connected only when the “gas” pedal is fully pressed, and in normal mode the engine runs without boost. Hydromechanical adaptive sports 5-speed "automatic" - own production with the AMG Speedshift function, which allows "manual" gear shifting.

In 2004, the second generation of the Mercedes-Benz SLK Roadster (R171) will debut at the Geneva Motor Show, which has actually become a trendsetter in the class of cars with a folding hard top. Externally, the roadster echoes the SLR concept car, but is built on the C-class coupe platform. Compared to its predecessor, the SLK has become significantly larger. Together with the new generation of the SLK roadster, Mercedes-Benz will show its top version from AMG in Geneva - a car that can be called a supercar. The SLK55 AMG is Mercedes' first compact roadster to feature a mighty V8. Having such an engine with a capacity of 360 forces, the SLK55 AMG accelerates to 100 km / h in just 4.9 seconds. If you remove the speed limiter, the roadster will be able to gain under 300 km / h. The advanced 7G Tronic transmission is standard on the AMG product. For the stability of the flagship modification, a significantly improved chassis with an extended wheel track is responsible. In 2008, sales of a restyled model began, which the public first saw at an exhibition in Detroit. The car is based on the C-Class W203 platform shortened by 285 millimeters. The dashboard received new three-dimensional scales, the arrows on which became red, and the edging was chrome-plated. Chrome was added on the center console under the head of the audio system, as well as on the gear and parking brake levers. The car is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. The SLK 200 can be optionally ordered with a five-speed automatic transmission. As for the SLK 280 and SLK 350 Sportmotor versions, the manufacturer offers a seven-speed 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission or 7G-TRONIC Sport automatic transmission with paddle shifters for them. On the other hand, everything is at hand, there is no such section of the cabin where you would not reach without getting up from your chair. You get used to it. I really like the design of the dashboard and torpedoes. The edging of devices and all sorts of "krutilok" with round chrome rings and so on - there are some hints of a retro interior - great.

What I really liked about the Mercedes SLK-class R170 was the very comfortable seats, and I (182cm) immediately found a comfortable position. Cool, short gearbox, powerful informative brakes. What caused discomfort was heavily fogging windows, I don’t know how it is with other cars, perhaps this is due to the small interior, but here you have to set the airflow to a speed above average, and then, condensation often remains around the edges. With a quiet ride on the highway consumption of about 8 liters. But the car provokes to give gas, the flow rate will be 9-10. In the city, according to my estimates, 13-16 liters. I think you can do less, but you always want to set fire to the rubber, go to the “reduced”, enjoying the sounds of the muffler.

If I don’t pay attention to the stiffness of the Mercedes SLK-class R170 suspension, realizing that this is a tribute to handling and design, then the strong squeaks of the cabin, trunk, and roof are often annoying. I couldn't drown them out even with music. First, the squeaks are quite loud. Secondly: with loud music, the salon begins to rattle. Inside, the car is spacious (my height is 180 cm, weight is 72 kg), I traveled with friends of my build and even taller than me, everyone was placed in the front seat without any problems. But the friend is shorter, but thicker (weight about 110 kg) barely got in and out - the seats are low, the thresholds are high. With the roof removed, it was possible to drive 170 km / h as much as possible, I didn’t accelerate faster, the Mercedes SLK-class R170 makes a lot of noise, of course, there are no problems up to 130 km / h, although my hair has been ruffled (despite the protective screen) since 80. I drive in a cap . With the roof down, I drove 210 km / h - calmly, linearly, without nerves.

  2. The engine related to the 300 version is also a 2-liter and turbocharged. It allowed, with 245 horsepower and 370 units of torque, to achieve hundreds in 6 seconds, the maximum speed reached the well-known limiter. The motor is also an in-line 4-cylinder 16-valve. Its consumption is declared at 8 liters, the start-stop system installed on all units allows saving.
  3. Buyers most often preferred the 350 version, but wanted the 55 AMG more. 350 was equipped with the M276 BlueDIRECT engine, in which the block heads received a camber of 60 degrees and, accordingly, a balancing shaft. The suspension of the SLK-Class P172 is very similar to the architecture of the C-Class, but there were still some differences. Behind the wheel on the dashboard is a large speedometer and tachometer between which is an on-board computer. There is climate control, a puck with which you can control multimedia. The driver can choose a comfortable position for himself, as there are electronic seat adjustments in several positions.


There are only two seats here, these are wonderful sports leather seats with electric adjustments and excellent lateral support. Sitting is quite comfortable, there is not much space, but it is enough, and the lateral support does its job perfectly.

In general, even though this is a roadster, you can ride it every day and feel comfortable.
