What is this service?

A vibration damper (also called a crankshaft damper) connected to the engine crankshaft reduces engine vibration and acts as a pulley for the drive belts. An absorber or damper consists of two elements: a massive body and an element that dissipates energy. The massive body prevents the build-up of vibration, and the energy-dissipating element (rubber) absorbs the vibration. Damper failure is usually due to aging of the rubber from heat, salt, or ozone. Wear and impact loads are also affected. cannot be ignored.

It is not provided in many modern cars. The fact is that, according to the intention of the designers, this element has a certain service life, which should be equal to the warranty period issued for the power unit of the machine. If the operation is carried out in European countries and the USA, this is most often the case. In our country, problems with this node often occur, which is associated with rather harsh conditions and a huge number of factors that cause the need for repairs.

The part must be replaced if it loses its mechanical properties. The most common problems are:

  • bundle;
  • the outer clip "slid" to the plastic cover;
  • traces of overheating were found directly on the tracks;
  • the element is badly worn or noticeably damaged.

Replacing the crankshaft pulley should be done if these problems are visible visually. In the conditions of the Russian climate, it is desirable to change this element once every 120 thousand km. run. After passing this mark, you should diagnose the condition of the crankshaft and decide whether it needs to be changed to a new one or not. The replacement procedure is quite complicated, so it is best to order it from experienced craftsmen at a service station.

Keep in mind

The normal functioning of the crankshaft and pulley depends on high-quality lubrication of the parts. The oil is supplied under a certain pressure from a common line. The oil film increases the wear resistance of the elements, improves the efficiency of their work.

If it is necessary to replace the crankshaft pulley, give preference to original and new parts. Neither allow achieving a positive and long-term result and the maximum level of reliability. When replacing the pulley, the pulley key, hanging belts, the front oil seal and the crankshaft pulley bolt must be changed without fail.

How important is it

  • The pulley transmits torque to the attachment belts from the crankshaft.
  • Absorbs jerks during sudden changes in the speed of rotation of the crankshaft.
  • Acts as a flywheel, allows additional rotation of the crankshaft and cools the drive belts.

The main reasons why this is happening

  • Vibration from the engine
  • Engine noise that increases with rpm

List of main works:

  • Inspect the crankshaft pulley damper.
  • Remove the balance shaft belt.
  • Check the condition of the front crankshaft oil seal.
  • Vibration damper replacement
  • Install drive belts.
  • Starting the engine and checking its operation

Why are special technological holes made in pulleys? In auto repair shops, there is a special device for fixing the shaft, which must be bolted to the pulley and lock the shaft.

If there is no special device for fixing the shaft, which is screwed to the pulley, then you need to put good recoil devices under the wheels of the car and put 4th gear on the gearbox.

Or, the third option is to rest the mount against the teeth of the flywheel and fix the crankshaft from turning while unscrewing the pulley nut.

Another option is to insert a pin into the pulley hole, and install a mount on the pin and the second stop, as in this figure.

How to unscrew the crankshaft pulley

Depending on the design of the crankshaft, the pulley is attached to it either with a nut or a bolt. On rear-wheel drive vehicles, the pulley is generally held in place with a nut.
The engines of some rear-wheel drive vehicles can be started with a special handle, for which special protrusions are made to engage the handle. This handle is also called a "crooked key", and the engagement for this key is called a ratchet.

The pulley fastening nut is set to a 36 or 38 mm turnkey size. Use a socket wrench. The key is reinforced by welding a long handle or a tube is put on to increase the "shoulder".

How to unscrew the pulley nut:

  1. Put the car on a pit or overpass.
  2. Raise the hand brake.
  3. Turn on 4 speed at the checkpoint, put stops under the wheels.
  4. Do not tap hard on the edges of the nut.
  5. Throw on the socket wrench, lengthen it with a pipe and rip off the stuck nut.

If the pulley nut does not loosen:

  1. Move the gear knob to neutral.
  2. Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs so that the engine does not start.
  3. Put a socket wrench on the nut and lengthen it with a pipe. Throw the wrench in such a way that the pipe rests against the ground or the machine side member on the right side to prevent the pulley from turning clockwise.
  4. We make a couple of short sharp turns of the ignition key to turn on the starter. The starter will start to rotate the flywheel, the crankshaft flywheel, and the pulley is fixed with a key. In this case, the usually stuck nut quickly “departs”.

The crankshaft pulley of front-wheel drive vehicles is mainly bolted. To remove the crankshaft pulley of a front-wheel drive car, you must proceed in this order:

  1. Raise the front right side of the car with a jack. Place a tragus, stump or a pair of wheels with discs.
  2. Remove wheel.
  3. Dismantle and remove the air filter with housing.
  4. Remove protective cover.
  5. Loosen the belt tensioner and remove the alternator belt.
  6. To fix the crankshaft, it is necessary to remove the plug in the clutch housing, then insert a pry bar into the hole and rest it between the teeth of the flywheel.
  7. Now you need to put on the socket wrench, lengthen it with a pipe and sharply try to turn it counterclockwise. The main thing is to break the sticky pulley bolt.

If it is not possible to break the bolt from its place, then we use the method of unscrewing the starter. This method is shown above.

Useful advice from locksmiths who have seen a lot: use thinner or WD-40, or a similar rust preventative. After spraying on the thread (if the pulley is fastened with a nut), you have to wait 15 minutes, then try to unscrew it. If it is a bolt, then it is not easy to apply this agent to the thread, although it is sprayed around the bolt, it is possible that the liquid will pass through the micro-slits and decoke the connection.

Removing the pulley

Unscrewing the fastening bolt or nut is only half the battle. Next, you need to pull the pulley from the shaft. So the pulley will not simply be removed by hand, if its seat is not gouged. In addition, the pulley fits tightly on the shaft, then it is still fixed from turning with a key.

There are special pullers for removing the pulley from the shaft. There are mechanical and hydraulic pullers.

The design of the mechanical puller is simple. Usually it has three paws, with which it is necessary to hook the pulley itself, and rest the central rod against the shaft. After that, it is necessary to rotate the rod, the legs will straighten and pull the pulley towards themselves. There are even easier pullers that you can do yourself.
If there is no removable device for the pulley, then pry bars can be used. If one person removes, then in turn, pushing back a little on each side so that there is no skew. If there are two, then simultaneously from different sides with a sharp movement the pulley is pressed from the crankshaft.

It also happens that when using a puller, the walls of the pulley grooves do not withstand and break off. Therefore, when using pry bars, they should be hooked as close to the shaft as possible.

Installing the pulley on the crankshaft

In order to install the pulley back on the ICE crankshaft, you need to check the seats. If there are burrs, scuffs, remove them with an emery stone. If the old pulley easily fits on the shaft, then such a pulley is not suitable. It should sit tight, sit down with a certain effort. Before installing the pulley, to reduce friction, it is necessary to lubricate with oil or lithol.

A detail that does not catch the eye and seems insignificant, in fact, plays an important role in ensuring the performance of all vehicle systems. Having a fairly simple and reliable device, the crankshaft pulley sometimes needs to be replaced. Most often it is removed if necessary. In this regard, it is important to know what types of pulleys exist, what breakdowns can be associated with, how replacement is performed.

Varieties of pulleys for the crankshaft

The vast majority of car mechanisms use for their work the energy received from the rotating crankshaft. If the rotation of the wheels is provided by a whole system of shafts and gears, then a crankshaft pulley is used to drive (timing), a generator, a pump, an air conditioner.

In different periods of the automotive industry and for different brands of cars, pulley design solutions independent of each other were used. It does not make sense to say which type of pulleys is better, for different operating conditions of the car - its own type of pulley.

Crankshaft with V-belt pulley

Almost all cars, trucks, buses with engines developed by domestic designers in the Soviet era are equipped with a belt drive for the generator. The pulley for such a belt has a one-piece (all-welded) design, and the groove repeats the configuration of the V-belt.

At the end of the shaft, the pulley is mounted through a key, which prevents it from turning, and is fixed with a nut (less often, a bolt). The simplest design allowed the use of the pulley throughout the entire period of operation.

crankshaft pulley

In order to facilitate the system and the gas distribution wire, the designers proposed to use not a chain, but a belt. A similar design is found on almost all modern cars. In order to achieve the maximum coincidence of the angle of rotation of the crankshaft and , the inner surface of the belt has grooves, and teeth are applied to the outer rim of the pulley. That is why such a pulley is called a gear. Provided timely replacement of belts and proper operation, the pulley itself lasts long enough, and breakdown is rare.

At the time of launch and a sharp change in the crankshaft speed, a strong impulse mechanical effect is exerted on the belt and the gas distribution system. The developers proposed to equip the pulley with a damper - a rubber layer between the inner cage and the outer working disk. A similar design has found wide application in motors for minibuses, light vehicles.

The designers achieved the desired result, but at the same time significantly reduced the life of the pulley. Rubber from temperature changes, aggressive environment, mechanical loads loses elasticity, collapses. Car owners are forced to continuously monitor the condition of the damper and urgently change the pulley when defects appear. Sometimes the pulley breaks, which completely immobilizes the car.

How to replace the crankshaft pulley

Whatever design the pulley is used on the motor, the principle of dismantling and installation remains the same. If the motor is located along the engine compartment, then the pulley is located in the front lower part, behind the cooling radiator. With a transverse arrangement of the block, the pulley can be reached by removing the right front wheel.

The most frequently asked question on auto forums is: what is the thread on the crankshaft pulley? The problem is that the nut or bolt is very tight. Experiencing serious difficulties during dismantling, car owners doubt the correct direction of effort.

There is only one answer in this case - the thread is right-handed, that is, it is necessary to unscrew the nut (bolt) counterclockwise. The crankshaft rotates in the opposite direction, which leads to a gradual strong tightening. If we add to this the processes of oxidation, corrosion, then it is very difficult to rip off such a puff manually.

Knowing some tricks, the whole process can be reduced to 10 minutes. The algorithm of actions is as follows:

  • the car is installed on a viewing hole, the wheels are fixed with stops;
  • with a transverse arrangement of the block, the wheel is removed, a “tragus” is placed under the brake disc;
  • a cap wrench with an elongated lever is put on the head of the bolt (nut) of the crankshaft and rests on the floor in the direction of rotation;
  • an armored wire is removed from the ignition distributor so that the engine does not start;
  • a short ignition switch activates the starter, the force of which is usually sufficient to break the bolt (nut).

This technique can be repeated several times until the puff is released. Further unscrewing is done manually. To facilitate the process, it is recommended to pre-coat all joints of parts with a layer of WD-type grease or brake fluid.

Pulling the pulley off the crankshaft is also not easy. Firstly, the landing dimensions are selected for the most durable connection and the elimination of backlash. Secondly, the crankshaft pulley key also offers resistance due to the tight fit. The use of a special screw puller is considered ideal. In the absence of such devices, the pulley is removed using a mount, gently pressing on the back surface of the pulley in different places.

If the car owner managed to dismantle the pulley, then there will be no problems with its installation. Everything happens in the reverse order, and the reliable clamping of the crankshaft will provide itself.

Every motorist knows perfectly well that most breakdowns and technical operations can be performed independently, while saving good money. In this article we will talk about how to remove the crankshaft pulley without contacting a service center. We will consider in detail all the nuances, analyze the main problems and methods for solving them.

Where is the crankshaft pulley

The crankshaft pulley is hidden behind the generator. At the bottom of the engine compartment there is a disk that is tightly fixed on the clutch shaft, it is the pulley. By design, this segment is divided into two types: conventional or with a damper. The latter have an additional outer massive ring with a rubber gasket, which provides improved vibration absorption. At first glance, the procedure may seem completely simple. However, there are several nuances.

It is necessary to fix the crankshaft so that it does not rotate. The high compression force of the fasteners also causes a lot of trouble. When installing, the pulley bolt is twisted with a sufficiently large force. So that it does not spontaneously unscrew, the degree of clamping gradually increases during the operation of the power unit. Such a fastening system is determined by the need for increased reliability of fixing the nuts. After all, in case of accidental unscrewing, serious damage can occur, due to which costly repairs cannot be avoided.

How to unscrew the pulley nut in rear-wheel drive models

The pulley is held by a nut that is placed on the end of the crankshaft. Such a design solution is presented in all VAZ rear-wheel drive vehicles in models from 2101 to 2107, Niva, etc. This fastener is also called a ratchet due to the presence of a ledge for a crooked starter.

For maximum convenience in performing this work, it is recommended to place the machine above the inspection hole. To fix the crankshaft, you need to put the gearbox in the 4th gear position and apply the handbrake. In the process of work, we will need the following tools:

    Socket or overhead key for 38 or 36, depending on the mounting unit.

    Lever extension. It can be a mount or a piece of pipe that will facilitate the process, increasing the effectiveness of your efforts.

If you cannot unscrew the nut with the lever, do the following:

    We remove the candlesticks, and set the key with the lever so that its end rests on the floor, preventing rotational operations.

    Then you need to apply a short-term impulse to the part. To do this, turn the key in the ignition.

The nut should move, if not on the first, then on the second attempt. After that, it can be easily unscrewed with a regular key.

How to unscrew the pulley bolt in front-wheel drive models

The bolt as a fastener for the crankshaft pulley is used in front-wheel drive vehicles. In such models, the block is placed perpendicular to the axis of the car. Unlike the dismantling of the nut in the rear-wheel drive modification, this method requires more time due to the need to remove additional parts. To perform the work, you need to prepare the following tools:

If you are faced with a problem of how to unscrew the crankshaft pulley bolt, this article is for you. We will describe this process in detail so that you can easily and quickly dismantle the crankshaft pulley, and then repair it.

How to unscrew the crankshaft pulley bolt: why is everything so complicated?

A knowledgeable motorist spends on the process of dismantling the crankshaft pulley, as a rule, no more than a quarter of an hour. But inexperienced drivers, when trying to remove this part, face many problems on their own, which they often simply cannot solve. The repair and maintenance instructions for any modern vehicle contain comprehensive information about the dismantling process, but, unfortunately, it does not help motorists.

First of all, there are difficulties with fixing. It is very difficult to dismantle it if the part is constantly rotating, “slipping out” of the hands. Also, many do not understand which side to get to the bolt that holds the pulley. Yes, and its strong tightening usually makes the process of removing the assembly very, very difficult, since dismantling under such conditions is fraught with damage to the bodywork or elements of the engine compartment of the car.

All car manufacturers and car service specialists tighten the nut or bolt with great effort (on some models of the vehicle, the mechanism rests on the bolt, on others - on the nut).

This is done on purpose to avoid self-unwinding of this part during the operation of the vehicle. If the bolt (nut) falls out while driving, it will not be easy to bring the car back to life in order to continue driving on it, and the repair itself will result, believe me, “a pretty penny”. In addition, the described fasteners increase their level of tightening on their own when the engine is running. And the final "inviolability" of the bolt is given by the phenomena of coking, sticking, corrosion.

How to unscrew the crankshaft pulley bolt - we solve the problem

With the help of a bolt, pulleys of front-wheel drive cars are usually attached. In such vehicles, the pulley is oriented perpendicular to the axis of the machine, which, of course, makes repair work difficult (it is very difficult to get to the mount). In order to unscrew the bolt as quickly and without difficulty, it is advisable to prepare in advance:

  • a set of auto tools;
  • the so-called "stump" (or "tragus");
  • car jack;
  • a head (end) with a lever and an extension (the head must be selected according to the size of the bolt).

The process with these devices is as follows:

  • remove the wheel (of course, before that you need to raise the front right side of the car with a jack);
  • install the vehicle on the "stump";
  • remove the engine shield that protects it from dirt, the air filter (they are located on the top side of the hood) and the alternator belt;
  • on the clutch block we open the plug so that the crankshaft can be fixed, and we jam the flywheel teeth using a mount;
  • we put the head on the bolt and begin to unscrew it (if it does not give in, slowly increase the length of the lever).

It seems that it is not required to talk about how to tighten the crankshaft pulley and return the car to its state before repair. All operations are performed in reverse order.

How to unscrew the crankshaft pulley nut?

This procedure is easier to perform with the help of a lever and an extension for it (you can use a piece of pipe of a relatively long length), as well as a box or socket wrench (38 or 36). The nut, which received the name "ratchet", as a rule, pulleys are attached to rear-wheel drive vehicles. Such a nut usually has special ledges.

To remove it, you need to get under the car and try to unscrew the element with a key with an extension cord. In cases where it categorically does not lend itself, the gearbox should be put in neutral, the candlesticks removed, the key with the lever against the side member or the floor, give an impulse by turning the key in the ignition switch. After such a procedure, the nut easily breaks off on the first or second attempt.
