The Finwhale F516 spark plug body is electroplated and made of high ductility steel, equipped with high electrical insulation, due to which heat, conductivity and mechanical strength are increased due to the high content of aluminum oxide on the insulator. In order for the electrodes to burn out less, they are made of nickel alloy.

After carefully reading this article, you can easily choose for yourself such candles that are necessary for you, based on your needs, capabilities and purpose.

What are the best spark plugs to put on your car? Surely every car owner at least once asked this question. After all, several factors influence the choice - the size of the candle, the glow number, its type, the volume and type of engine (carburetor / injector), the fuel used (gas / gasoline), and so on. You should also consider the recommendations of the automaker. Currently, there are candles made both by classical technology and more modern options - platinum, iridium, plasma-prechamber. They are distinguished not only by a longer service life, but also by better and more stable spark performance. Therefore, the answer to the question of what kind of spark plugs should be consists of many components.

When choosing a particular candle, you need to focus not on the popularity of the brand or its model, but on the actual data of the candles. In particular, the dimensions (length, height, type and pitch of the thread), the material of the electrodes, their type, glow number, the gap between the electrodes. And only on the basis of these data it is necessary to make a choice between different brands of candles, since their choice is currently simply huge.

And only then focus on the most productive characteristics based on how many side electrodes will be on the candle, what material these electrodes are made of, what is the gap between them. And in order to understand how these characteristics affect, we briefly consider the features of each of these indicators.

Number and types of electrodes

First, let's touch on the side electrodes, since it is in this part that the candles differ the most. They are made of different materials, have different sizes and designs.

Side electrodes

Candles with multiple electrodes

Classic old-style candles have one central and one side electrode. The latter is made of steel alloyed with manganese and nickel. However, candles with multiple side electrodes. They provide a more powerful and stable spark, which is critical for a candle. In addition, several ground electrodes do not get dirty as quickly, require cleaning less often and last longer.

Candles have similar qualities, the electrodes of which are covered with the following metals - platinum and iridium(the second is a transition metal of the platinum group), or their alloy. Such candles have a resource of up to 60 ... 100 thousand kilometers (in some cases even more, but this depends on many other factors - the operating conditions of the machine, the fuel used, engine power, and so on). In addition, such candles need a lower sparking voltage.

Spark plugs based on platinum and iridium are never cleaned mechanically.

Distinctive feature plasma-prechamber candles is that the role of the side electrode is played by the body of the candle. Also, such a candle has a greater burning power. And this, in turn, increases engine power and reduces the amount of toxic elements in the exhaust gases of the car.

Platinum, iridium and plasma pre-chamber candles are much more expensive than classic ones. However, given their high efficiency and duration of operation, it makes sense to install them on machines of the middle and expensive class. So you save the resource not only of the candles themselves, but also of other elements of the engine of your car.

Central electrode

Its tip is made of iron-nickel alloys with the addition of chromium and copper. On more expensive plugs, as with ground electrodes, a platinum brazed tip can be applied to the tip, or a thin iridium electrode can be used instead. Since the central electrode is the hottest part of the candle, the car owner periodically needs to perform cleaning. However, in this case we are only talking about classic old-style candles. If platinum, iridium or yttrium is deposited on the electrode, there is no need for cleaning, since soot is practically not formed.

The next factor to pay attention to is the size of the gap between the center and side electrode(s).

The larger the gap between the electrodes of the candle, the greater the voltage value is necessary for a spark to appear.

Gap on candles of different types

Briefly consider the factors that this affects:

  • Large gap causes large spark. In turn, a large spark, firstly, is more likely to ignite the air-fuel mixture, and secondly, it also increases the uniformity of the engine.
  • A very large air gap is harder to pierce with a spark. In addition, in the presence of pollution, the electric discharge can find another way for itself - through an insulator or high-voltage wires. This could lead to an emergency.
  • The shape of the central electrode directly affects the strength of the electric field in the candle. The thinner their tips, the greater the tension value. The mentioned platinum and iridium spark plugs have thin electrodes themselves, so they provide a quality spark.

It is worth adding that the distance between the electrodes has a variable value. Firstly, during the operation of the candle, the electrodes naturally burn out, so you need to either adjust the distance or buy new candles. Secondly, if you have installed LPG (gas equipment) on your car, then you must also set the required gap between the electrodes for high-quality combustion of this type of fuel.

The Russian industry produces candles with the following glow numbers - 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23 and 26. Other countries have their own standards, but there is no single unified rule for classifying candles in the world. On average, candles are conventionally divided into:

  • "hot" (having an incandescent number of 11 ... 14);
  • "medium" (similarly, 17 ... 19);
  • "cold" (similarly, from 20 or more);
  • "universal" (their glow number is in the range from 11 to 20).

In general terms, it is worth noting that "hot" plugs are designed for use in low-boost engines. In such units, the self-cleaning process occurs at relatively low temperatures. And vice versa, "cold" candles are used in highly forced engines, that is, where the temperature is reached at maximum engine power.

It is important to choose candles with a glow number, which is indicated in the manual for your car. If you choose a candle with a number that is greater than that indicated in the document (that is, install a “colder” candle), then, firstly, the car will lose power, since not all fuel will burn, and secondly, on The electrodes will soon develop carbon deposits as the temperature will not be sufficient for the self-cleaning function to take place. And vice versa, if you install a more “hot” candle, then similarly the car will lose power, but the spark will be very powerful, and the candle will kind of burn itself out. Therefore, always follow the manufacturer's recommendations, and buy a candle with the appropriate glow number!

Candle sizes

By the size of the candles are divided according to several parameters. In particular, thread length, diameter, thread type, turnkey head size. For brevity, we consider only the first two parameters. So, according to the length of the thread, candles are divided into three main classes:

  • short - 12 mm;
  • long - 19 mm;
  • elongated - 25 mm.

If the engine is small-sized and low-power, then candles with a thread length of up to 12 mm can be installed on it. As for thread length, in automotive technology, the most common corresponding value is 14 mm.

Always pay attention to the indicated dimensions. If you try to screw in a spark plug with dimensions that do not match the engine of your car, you risk damaging the threads of the plug seat or damaging the valves. In any case, this will lead to costly repairs.

Now that we have found out by what technical parameters it is necessary to choose candles, let's go directly to the description of specific manufacturers and brands. So it will be easier for car owners to navigate the huge assortment offered by car dealers at the present time.

The nuances of choosing candles

Let us briefly analyze the information about what type of candles are suitable for an injection, carburetor engine, as well as for a car with LPG. Let's start with the simplest type - carburetor. Usually inexpensive candles are placed on them, the electrodes of which are made of nickel or copper. This is due to their low price and the same low requirements that apply to candles. As a rule, the resource of such products is about 30 thousand kilometers.

As for injection engines, other requirements already apply. In this case, you can install both inexpensive nickel candles and more productive platinum or iridium counterparts. Although they will cost more, they have a longer resource, as well as work efficiency. Therefore, you will change the candles much less often, and the fuel will burn out more fully. This will positively affect the engine power, its dynamic characteristics, and reduce fuel consumption. Also remember that platinum and iridium candles do not need to be cleaned, they have a self-cleaning function. The resource of platinum candles is 50 ... 60 thousand, and iridium - 60 ... 100 thousand kilometers. Given the fact that recently the competition between manufacturers has been increasing, the price of platinum and iridium candles is constantly decreasing. Therefore, we recommend that you use these products.

As for machines with installed gas-balloon equipment (HBO), candles with small design features should be installed on them. In particular, due to the fact that the air-fuel mixture formed by the gas is less saturated, a more powerful spark is needed to ignite it. Accordingly, in such engines it is necessary to install candles with a reduced gap between the electrodes. There are special models for gas installations. However, if the candle can be adjusted by hand, then this can be done with a regular "gasoline" candle, reducing the said gap by approximately 0.1 mm. After that, it can be installed in a gas-powered engine.

BRISK

Another manufacturer of candles, whose products are very popular among domestic motorists. The joint-stock company BRISK Tábor is located in the south of the Czech Republic and has been producing candles since 1935. Currently, there are several lines of its products:

  • classic. These are the simplest and cheapest spark plugs, perfect for carbureted engines with a contact ignition system. Their main advantage is an acceptable price.
  • Extra. Candles belonging to this line have 2 or 3 side electrodes (depending on the specific model). These products are used in the engines of many famous cars - Opel, VW, Audi, BMW and others.
  • Premium. These are the most expensive Brisk candles. They feature high performance, spark stability and durability.
  • Silver. These spark plugs are designed specifically for cars with gas-powered engines (HBO).
  • Forte. A distinctive feature of this series is the increased diameter of the central electrode. In addition, the body of the candle has a galvanized coating, and the spark gap has a non-standard shape. Thanks to this, the candle has a long service life.

DENSO

DENSO spark plugs are also one of the most popular. There are several lines of this brand, each of which has its own characteristics.

Nickel TT. The Twin Tip technology makes it possible to produce the central and side electrodes of the spark plug with a diameter of 1.5 mm. The reduced diameter allows for a powerful spark, which is especially important when using the machine in cold weather. Candles of this series allow to reduce fuel consumption by 5% compared to standard ones, provided that other conditions are equal. The line includes the following candles:

Iridium TT. These are iridium candles, the diameter of the central electrode is only 0.4 mm, and the side electrode is 0.7 mm. A feature of the candles is their extended service life - over 120 thousand kilometers (depending on other factors). They produce a powerful spark, which increases the resource and power of the engine, and the amount of toxic gases decreases. Used in the following vehicles:

Standard. They are the simplest and most inexpensive candles of all DENSO lines. Here you will find a huge selection for most of the machines used in our country (both "cold" and "hot"). We present a table of correspondence of glow numbers of different brands so that you can choose exactly the DENSO spark plug that the car manufacturer recommends.

Platinum Longlife. The central and side electrodes of such candles are covered with platinum. This makes it possible to operate the devices with a mileage of 100 thousand kilometers or more (depending on other operating conditions). Candles give out a powerful spark that allows you to burn the working mixture even at low air temperatures.

Iridium power. They have a central electrode with a diameter of 0.4 mm, coated with iridium. According to DENSO testing, these plugs increase engine power by approximately 1.4%. And the amount of fuel consumed is reduced by 5%.

Iridium Tough. As in the previous series, the electrode diameter is only 0.4 mm. However, instead of a conical ground electrode with a U-shaped groove, in this case, the electrode has a platinum patch. The service life of candles is 100 or more thousand kilometers. They also save fuel by approximately 5%. There is a special series called Iridium Tough LPG designed for liquefied gas engines.

Iridium Racing. These are the most technologically advanced and expensive candles. They are used in forced and sports cars. They not only have a high resource, but also the ability to work in difficult conditions.

Spark plugs for engines with LPG

Candles for HBO

Finally, a few words about candles that can be used with gas equipment. In fact, there are many such devices, but in practice, in accordance with the bench tests carried out, the best candles are:

  • Denso Iridium IW20;
  • NGK LPG Laser Line #2;
  • Bosch Platinum WR7DP.

The same candle models can also be used on engines that use gasoline as fuel.

The main difference between “gas” candles and “gasoline” ones is that they have a smaller gap between the electrodes approximately 0.1 mm. Therefore, if your car has a HBO installation, then it makes sense for you to choose similar candles, but with a smaller gap. Or, if possible, adjust it yourself.

Conclusion

The main rule that you should use when choosing a particular candle is the recommendations of the manufacturer of your car. They can be found in the manual or additional reference literature. In particular, the dimensions of the candle are important, as well as the glow number. If you are the owner of a budget car, then it hardly makes sense for you to buy expensive platinum or iridium candles, because they are not cheap, but they will not be able to show their abilities to the fullest. On the contrary, if you have an expensive foreign car, and even more so a sports car with a powerful engine, we recommend that you use expensive iridium or platinum candles. This will not only allow you to feel comfortable driving, but also extend the life of the entire engine of the car. Also try to buy candles in trusted stores that have the appropriate licenses and permits. Otherwise, you run the risk of running into a fake, especially when buying expensive candles.

Types of spark plugs. Candles can vary in the number of electrodes: single-electrode (standard), multi-electrode. And also by type: Ordinary (regular), iridium, platinum. The manufacturer recommends using conventional single-electrode spark plugs for VAZ.

Service life of spark plugs depends on operating conditions. In accordance with the maintenance regulations for Lada Priora, Kalina and Grant cars, spark plugs should be changed every 30,000 km. However, in some cases (for example, when starting the engine in severe frost), new spark plugs can also be damaged - fill them with gasoline. Tip: do not throw away old candles, but use them in such cases.

By the way, the owners of the VAZ of the tenth family in the survey "

An article about spark plugs for a car engine - varieties, selection criteria. At the end of the article - an interesting video on how to clean candles from soot.

The content of the article:

Engine operation largely depends on spark plugs, and the performance of the latter depends on the manufacturer and manufacturing technology. The spark plug rating is most often headed by recognized market leaders like Bosch, Denso, Beru and some others. These companies supply their products to automakers, so they strictly monitor the quality and adherence to technology.

Spark plugs - varieties and features

When choosing, the material from which the electrodes are made, as well as their number, is of primary importance.

According to the number of spark generators, spark plugs are divided into two-electrode and multi-electrode (plus plasma-prechamber, which is a novelty on the market).

Two-electrode

They have a main (central) and side electrodes. Candles of this type are a classic variety. When starting, a spark is formed between the electrodes, which ignites the fuel mixture.

Multielectrode

In addition to the central one, they have two or more side spark generators. The principle of operation is the same, but the design allows you to stabilize the formation of a spark and the operation of the propulsion system.

Plasma prechamber

Such candles appeared on the auto parts market around 2000 and still provoke discussions. Neither experts nor ordinary motorists have come to a consensus on what this new product is - either the next step towards increasing efficiency, or a futile attempt at improvement.

Pre-chamber candles differ from traditional ones in that the role of the side electrode is performed by the body of the product, equipped with a special heat-resistant nozzle. It is with its help that a spark is formed.

But despite such an improvement, the best spark plugs, according to consumer ratings and reviews, are still traditional electrode ones.

Classification by electrode material

copper/nickel

The main characteristics of spark plugs are quality and budget. Of course, in terms of operating parameters, the products are far from those that will be discussed below, but for their price segment they have decent readings. On average, a copper-electrode spark plug is enough for 20 - 30 thousand kilometers, after which replacement is required.

Platinum (sometimes made from other precious metals)

The electrodes of the products have a platinum coating, due to which their service life is increased and the quality is improved. Such a candle is designed for a run of 50 thousand km.

iridium

The resource is up to 100 thousand km, and the quality indicators are many times better than the previous options. But the cost of the product is corresponding.

Rating of the best spark plugs

The market leaders have been determined for a long time. The results of tests, consumer votes, expert opinions sometimes differ, but the top positions in the ratings are almost always occupied by the same brands.
