The new Suzuki Jimny hasn't changed much in size. Moreover, the declared ground clearance is increased by the same 20 mm: now 210 instead of 190 mm. The basic design of the car was preserved: the new Suzuki Jimny remained an honest frame SUV with two solid axles, spring suspension, hard-wired all-wheel drive and a reduction gear in the transfer case. The new frame with additional reinforcements and crossbars is one and a half times stiffer than the previous one, but the wheelbase has not changed: 2250 mm. Bridges are now wider and the track has grown by 40 mm: up to 1395 mm at the front and 1405 mm at the rear. Already in the basic configuration there is a limited-slip rear differential, but from off-road electronics - only an assistant to descend from the mountain.

At the same time, the archaic steering mechanism of the worm-roller type (like that of the Zhiguli) remained the same - an additional damper was cut into it to reduce the vibrations transmitted to the steering wheel. The rear still has drum brakes. The volume of the fuel tank has not changed either (40 liters).

The biggest technical innovation is the 1.5-liter K15B gasoline engine with distributed injection (102 hp, 130 Nm), which replaced the 1.3 engine (85 hp, 110 Nm). Judging by the unchanged gear ratios, the gearboxes and transfer cases have switched to the new Jimny straight from the old one: buyers can choose between a five-speed “mechanics” and a four-speed “automatic”.

But the interior is completely new - with an angular front panel, analog instruments and partial rear trim. In the spirit of the time, a modern media system was registered here (like other Suzuki models), and climate control appeared from the comfort elements. For switching transmission modes, it is not the newfangled button washers that are responsible, but the old-school lever. The new front seats have a frame that is 70mm wider than before and their attachment points are 30mm lower.

The distance between the rows has grown by 40 mm, but the already miniature trunk has been sacrificed. Its volume behind the backs of the rear seats has decreased from 113 to 85 liters. Although the maximum volume with the rear row folded down is now even slightly larger: 830 instead of 816 liters.

The Japanese consider the Suzuki Safety Support complex to be one of the most important new things: it includes automatic braking, marking tracking, reading road signs and switching high beams, and can also notify the driver that the car in front has started moving. Of course, there is a stabilization system in the arsenal, there are now six airbags instead of two in the previous model.

In Japan, the "international" version of the SUV will traditionally be sold under the double name Jimny Sierra, because the "just Jimny" in the local market is slightly different and belongs to the preferential category of kei cars. It has the same body, but more compact bumpers and narrow axles have been installed to comply with size standards, and expanders have disappeared from the wheel arches. As a result, the length, excluding the spare tire, decreased to 3395 mm, and the width to 1475 mm.

Under the hood of the Japanese version, a “preferential” 660 cc R06A turbo engine is installed, which produces the maximum 64 hp allowed for kei cars. The transmission, gearboxes and equipment are the same as those of the “big” Jimny. In Japan, the kei version should be much more popular than the Sierra: Suzuki expects to sell 15,000 660-cc SUVs and only 1,200 1.5-liter versions annually.

Production of the new Suzuki Jimny began a few months ago, and now SUVs are not being produced in Iwata, but at another company plant in the city of Kosai. Sales on the local market have already begun: a small-capacity Jimny costs from $14,000, and for a “full-fledged” Jimny Sierra, you need to pay at least $15,900. Gradually, deliveries to other countries will begin. For example, in Russia, the new Jimny is expected around the beginning of 2019. Suzuki, as part of the official presentation on June 5, revealed all the information about the new Suzuki Jimny 2018-2019. The 4th generation off-road vehicle, which entered the assembly line of the plant in the Japanese city of Kasai at the beginning of summer, will replace the 3rd generation car (FJ body), which has been on the market for about 20 years. For such a long period, the car was updated only twice (in 2006 and 2012), and even then only in minor details. So the fans of the model were waiting for the release of the “fourth” Suzuki Jimny with great impatience, and now they have the opportunity to evaluate the improvements made.

I immediately wanted to reassure those who feared that after the change of generations, Jimny would lose its valuable off-road qualities and cease to be the honest all-terrainer that it was from the very moment of its appearance. So, this did not happen, and even more than that, in terms of technology, the newcomer inherited a lot from his predecessor. For example, the new 2018-2019 Suzuki Jimny got a body with a ladder-type frame, spring-loaded solid axles front and rear, a hard-wired all-wheel drive with a transfer case and a reduction gear. At the same time, the Japanese SUV acquired not only a new 1.5-liter engine with a return of 102 hp, but also more advanced electronic equipment, which made the car much more comfortable and safer than it was before.

At home, Jimny, in addition to the version with a 1.5-liter engine, is also offered in a modification with a small-capacity 660-cc unit with a capacity of 64 hp. Such an option in Japan is simply called Suzuki Jimny, while the “older” version is called Jimny Sierra. We will talk about the second version, because it is she who will be exported, including to Russia. The new Suzuki will reach us around the beginning of 2019, and the base cost of the model will be about 1.2 million rubles (the price for the current Jimny starts at 1,175,000 rubles). In the Japanese market, the price of the new generation Suzuki Jimny starts at 1,760,400 yen (about 1 million rubles).

A different vision of familiar forms

The first major upgrade in the last two decades did not greatly affect the external dimensions of the Suzuki Jimny. The SUV is 50mm shorter, 45mm wider and 20mm taller. Suzuki's designers decided to stay true to the signature styling line, giving the new model the same boxy shapes that were characteristic of the previous car. However, many body elements were revised - there were other grilles, bumpers, rear-view mirrors. The headlights, although they remained round, have acquired modern LED content.
